Two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson is in talks to join the Gareth Edwards-directed Jurassic World reboot at Universal.
This has been out there in the ether for some time, but it’s looking quite solid. This puts Johansson in business with another major movie franchise following her Black Widow days at Marvel, which resulted in the star suing Disney over the 2021 pandemic release of that movie, which the studio opted to go day-and-date on Disney+, thus siphoning box office grosses. The two sides ultimately settled.
Universal is assembling the project quickly for a July 2, 2025, release. David Koepp, who adapted the first Jurassic Park from Michael Crichton’s classic novel, is penning the latest iteration of Jurassic World.

Scarlett Johansson is taking a bite out of a new blockbuster. The actor is in talks to join Universal’s new Jurassic World movie, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Universal is moving quickly on the film, which has a July 2, 2025, release date. Gareth Edwards is directing the new Jurassic World, which has a script from Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp. Edwards stepped into the role after David Leitch exited following a short attachment to the project.
The film returns Johansson to the world of franchises. She starred as Black Widow in a number of Marvel Studios movies, including the Avengers features, but unlike some co-stars in the superhero world, has had no trouble breaking out in other projects. She has earned two Oscar nominations, for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. 1993 was a year of change for filmmaker Steven Spielberg. On June 11, the director's dinosaur thriller "Jurassic Park" was released, making huge amounts of money and, eventually, becoming one of the biggest blockbusters of the decade. On December 15, the director's soul-rattling Holocaust drama "Schindler's List" was released, inviting a wave of praise and astonishment from audiences. It went on to win seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Up until June of 1993, Spielberg was perhaps best known for his action blockbusters and adventure films ("The Color Purple" and "Empire of the Sun" notwithstanding). After December 1993, Spielberg would become seemingly less interested in genre films and far more interested in movies aimed squarely at adults. He didn't seem terribly invested in his 1997 sequel to "Jurassic Park," titled "The Lost World," and, indeed, Spielberg's adventure films released since then have all felt distant and automatic, especially when compared to his more politically-bent historical dramas like "Munich,...

Christopher Nolan’s Rumored Salary for Oppenheimer Will Give Steven Spielberg an Inferiority Complex
On the heels of Christopher Nolan potentially being paid a jaw-dropping salary for his critically acclaimed film Oppenheimer, it appears that even rivals Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg. While the exact figures have not been confirmed, rumor has it that the British-American filmmaker might have been paid an estimated $72 million for the $960 million 2023 film.
For comparison, Spielberg, one of the highest-paid directors in the movie business, is said to charge between $20 and $25 million (or sometimes more) per film. So when you do the math, it’s not hard to see how Nolan’s potential pay might give Spielberg stiff competition.
Cillian Murphy in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023)
Spielberg is credited with creating many successful films, including Jaws (1975), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), Saving Private Ryan (1998), Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Jurassic Park (1993), and others.

For years the Jurassic Park franchise has allured the audience with its inescapable world filled with impressive visuals, characters, narrative, and Dinosaurs! Not only did it win praise for the way it incorporated the pre-historic characters within the storyline but also for the way it built the whole world around them while keeping both the human and fictional elements at the center of the narrative.

The director impressed Jurassic Park creators Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall in meetings last week. Soon after, the studios extended an offer Edwards is expected to formally accept once negotiations conclude.

It was recently revealed that Universal Pictures is developing a new movie in the "Jurassic World" franchise, with David Koepp penning the screenplay. That was big news because Koepp, who has frequently collaborated with director Steven Spielberg during his long career, penned the script for the original "Jurassic Park." Given the love that movie still has more than 30 years later, it's a big deal. And, given that Koepp hasn't worked on this franchise since "The Lost World," it's a curious development. That part was, indeed, surprising. What should not surprise anyone, though, is the fact that Universe is making another movie set in this universe.
There are undoubtedly those amongst you who groaned when thinking about another one of these movies. To say that the "Jurassic World" trilogy is divisive would be an understatement. Critics generally hated the films (particularly "Fallen Kingdom" and "Dominion"), but all three of them were widely embraced by general audiences,...

The Jurassic Park franchise isn’t extinct quite yet. As reported by multiple outlets, a new Jurassic World reboot is being developed at Universal, with Jurassic Park and The Lost World screenwriter David Koepp spearheading the project.
Meant to launch a new era for the franchise, the film will have a new storyline. Per Deadline, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are not expected to return from the recent Jurassic World trilogy, nor are the original trilogy’s Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum.
While no director has been attached to the currently untitled movie, Koepp will pen the screenplay. It will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Entertainment, with Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley serving as producers.

Some gigantic news today for lovers of dinosaur-centric cinema, as one of the original creatives behind "Jurassic Park" is returning to the fold more than 30 years later. The "Jurassic World" trilogy may have ended in 2022 with the release of "Jurassic World Dominion," but Universal Pictures is evidently trying to keep the series alive with a new movie -- one that might be coming our way sooner rather than later. While details are scarce for the time being, it has come to light that none other than David Koepp is writing a new movie in the franchise.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Koepp is not only writing a new "Jurassic" movie, but it is pretty far along in the development process. So much so that a 2025 release date is said to be possible, which would be downright remarkable given that this is the first thing we've officially heard about the film.

We’ve confirmed that a new Jurassic World movie, a complete reboot, is being fast-tracked at Universal with the franchise’s original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp. He adapted the first two movies from 1993 and 1997’s The Lost World from Michael Crichton’s novels.
The new movie will be a completely fresh take on a Jurassic era with Jurassic World castmembers Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard not expected to return, nor the original trilogy’s thespians Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neill.
The film will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Entertainment, Frank Marshall, and Patrick Crowley will produce.
The Jurassic movies through six titles have grossed more than $6 billion worldwide. The last installment, Jurassic World: Dominion, released in 2022 made $1 billion at the global box office.
Executive Vice President of Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project for the Studio.

Understanding the Giant Ape That Paved the Way The concept of kaiju, or giant monsters, has captivated audiences for nearly a century, with its origins deeply rooted in the cinematic masterpiece King Kong (1933). This film not only introduced a colossal ape to the silver screen but also set a precedent with its groundbreaking special effects and compelling storytelling. If you followed indie film in the 90s, Vince Vaughn was at the center of a legendary tale. As the story goes, in order to get permission to use the theme from Jaws in the film Swingers, Doug Liman screened the film for Steven Spielberg’s approval. Not only did Stevie Boy allow them to use the scary shark tune but the legendary director knew he had to work with whoever was playing Trent Walker. And, he did just that when he cast Vince Vaughn in his Jurassic Park sequel, The Lost World. Spielberg instantly knew that Vince Vaughn was superstar material and he was correctomundo. Over the last nearly 30 years, he has given us some of the best comedic performances mixed in with some bone chilling anti-heroes. But it seems in the past few years Vaughn has slowed down his output to focus on smaller roles in more meaningful projects.

For 30 years, the "Jurassic Park" films have helped keep prehistoric beasts on the big screen, dating back to Steven Spielberg's original, groundbreaking blockbuster. Ever since, this has pretty much been the only game in town as far as dinosaurs go. Sure, other movies have tried to do dino action on a large scale, such as the recent Adam Driver sci-fi flick "65," but nothing ever seems to truly click with audiences in a meaningful way. At least not nearly on the level that these movies have for three decades.
Across three decades and spanning six films, the franchise has come a long way. For anyone looking to revisit the series, or perhaps anyone who fell off at some point and wishes to get back on board to see what John Hammond's dream of uniting dinosaurs and mankind together after 65 million years resulted in, we've got you covered. In an era when many superhero films have adapted an unflattering, desaturated visual style in the name of realism, "Aquaman" is a balm for the eyes. The James Wan-directed DC Comics flick is full of eye-popping colors and imagery reminiscent of the splash pages you find in actual comic books. There are also nods aplenty to classic sci-fi and adventure stories, from the globe-trotting tomb-raiding of the Indiana Jones films to the fantastical prehistoric setting of Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World." So it should come as no surprise that Wan has taken a similar approach to crafting a unique look for his sequel, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom."

Steven Spielberg has given us some of the greatest adventures ever seen on the big screen, whether it's the exploits of Indiana Jones, surviving a theme park gone wrong in "Jurassic Park," tracking down a man-eating shark in open water, or trying to find treasure while running from dangerous criminals in "The Goonies." Sure, he only has a producer credit on the latter, but there's always been rumblings about Spielberg's work behind the scenes on the movie credited to director Richard Donner.
Anyway, we're always down to celebrate the work of a cinematic genius like Spielberg, which is why we're stoked to see a batch of new posters paying tribute to both the "Jurassic Park" franchise and "The Goonies." Our friends at Bottleneck Gallery are releasing new, limited edition prints for "Jurassic Park" and "The Lost World," with artist Nicolas Tetreault-Abel cleverly recreating the franchise's iconic logo in a beautiful fashion.

Jurassic Park, based on Michael Crichton’s novel, spawned five blockbuster sequels as well as a multitude of spin-off games, toys, novels, and multiple animated television shows. It features a theme park housing de-extincted dinosaurs that break out of their confines and cause havoc. Underpinning the plot is clever genetic engineering that has allowed the Park’s scientists to assume they could control all aspects of the dinosaurs’ development, including their sex, much to their later horror when it becomes apparent such control was never possible. The film franchise has taken an average of over $1 billion dollars at the box office,...

While the Jurassic Park sequel The Lost World was still marauding around the multiplexes, a teaser trailer suddenly appeared showing a group of schoolchildren in a museum staring up in awe at the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Suddenly a gigantic lizard’s foot crashes through the ceiling and crushes the T-Rex as if it were an ant. Guess who’s coming to town…

Kicking off a marketing campaign like that, a full year before Godzilla rose up from the depths was pretty much unprecedented back in 1997. It signalled the arrival of the age of internet marketing. It’s 30 years this June since Jurassic Park roared into theaters. The monster franchise now boasts six films: 1993’s Jp, 1997’s The Lost World, and 2001’s Jurassic Park III — all tracking paleontologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill), paleo-botanist Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and “chaotician” Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) — and the 2015–22 reboot trilogy of Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom, and Dominion, led by raptor trainer Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and park exec Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard). (Credit: John Wilson / © Universal Pictures / courtesy Everett Collection) Which is the indomitable best? Dominion should reign supreme, since it united the stars of both eras. Sadly, the ludicrous script and paltry interaction between the two casts proved to be the worst thing to happen to dinosaurs since that meteor hit Earth. It’s clear the classic remains the champ (although World is a close second). It gave us a truly terrifying T. rex and, through groundbreaking effects,...

The Steven Spielberg movie Schindler’s List is largely seen as one of Spielberg’s most iconic works. But the film also took an emotional toll on the director, and he strongly considered leaving filming behind after doing the project.

When Spielberg set out to direct Schindler’s List, he immediately felt the film would be special. The movie was a critical hit, earning Spielberg his first Best Director Oscar. It was also a commercial success which, given its subject matter, was a bit of a surprise at that time. Spielberg, however, didn’t feel that Schindler’s List’s impact was limited to just cinema.

Steven Spielberg is a filmmaker that many actors aspire to work with, including action star Jackie Chan. But when Chan asked to be a part of one of Spielberg’s biggest franchises, Chan claimed he didn’t get the desired response.

Chan has never minced words when it came to his admiration for director Steven Spielberg. Spielberg was less than a handful of filmmakers who Chan would’ve worked with for free if he needed to. George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and James Cameron were other directors he would’ve been fine collaborating with without pay.
“I want to find out what happen, my action and their technology,” Chan once told The New York Times.
Chan would finally get the opportunity to meet the Oscar-winning filmmaker for a project Spielberg had in mind.

A strong argument could be made for King Kong being the most influential movie ever made. Kong’s progeny includes Mighty Joe Young, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Godzilla, Ray Harryhausen films, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Lord of the Rings, Avatar, many of the character-driven stop motion creations of the past ninety years, and dozens of authorized and unauthorized spin-offs, sequels, remakes, and rip-offs. The film inspired dozens, if not hundreds of directors, special effects artists, sound effects creators, composers, and film creators of all kinds, who have in turn inspired the next generation of filmmakers, and they the next. It is the first special-effects driven blockbuster of the sound era; a genre-crossing spectacular that introduced the world to some of cinema’s most iconic imagery and sound, the screen’s first true Scream Queen, and one of the all-time great gods and monsters of film history.

If there's one thing we can take away from modern blockbusters it's that, with rare exceptions, special effects just don't feel "special" anymore.
That's not to say that there aren't beautiful and convincing visual effects being produced in the world of cinema. "Top Gun: Maverick" seamlessly blends real aerial footage with CG recreations, to the extent that it's nearly impossible to tell what was really in front of the camera. "Avatar: The Way of Water," whatever its other flaws may be, is a sumptuous spectacle for the eyes, at once vibrant and colorful and creative.
But what so very many modern visual effects films have in common is that they take imagery that should be astounding for granted, treating the most incredible and impossible things the human mind could devise, and acting like it's just something everyone deals with every day. And the new superhero film "Shazam! Fury of the Gods...

The original intent of 65 was always to give audiences a false sense of familiarity. A lonely astronaut in the far reaches of space, awakened from cryo-sleep by his ship’s computer; a crew of passengers endangered when they’re forced to land on a strange world; and the distant foreboding sound of something out there in the dark. As writer-directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods concede, it’s more or less the setup of Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi horror movie, Alien (1979). Only 65 has an added hook. Or perhaps it’s a claw.
“I get it, there’s aliens, we’ve seen this,” Woods says with a smile, recalling the effect they wanted the movie to have on audiences at the start. “But then those aliens and that planet turn out to be Earth during the age of dinosaurs.” Suddenly, you have a story of sci-fi desperation and survival that...

I never understood why Jurassic Park was the only dinosaur-related franchise to outlive the dino hysteria of the 90s. Don’t get me wrong, Spielberg’s classic is clearly the best movie to come out of that trend, but that doesn’t change the fact that dinosaurs as a concept are in the public domain and should have been featured in countless other films.
Fortunately for fans of all things prehistoric, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’s upcoming 65 (March 10th) promises a return to the Jurassic-Park-less thrills of completely original dinosaur movies. And with that in mind, we’ve come up with this list highlighting six of the best non-jp dinosaur thrillers for all your prehistoric media needs!

The film Jurassic Park was something that was ahead of its time. When I first watched it, I wouldn’t have thought it came before the 21st century. The plot line and the world where the story revolved were works of science that weren’t much-given attention in its year of release. Jurassic Park was the predecessor of Jurassic World, which also ran on the same premise where human characters were trying to do something inside a locality of dinosaurs. Its successors were The Lost World (1997), Jurassic Park III (2001), Jurassic World (2015), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), and Jurassic World

The year of madness better known as 2022 is almost over. December is coming to an end, and like the end of every month, the streaming services are sharing which shows, movies, and specials will be leaving each platform in the next month. HBO Max shared their list for January 2023, and there are some pretty major movies leaving the streamer that fans will want to check out Asap. A few Christmas specials and movies are fairly typical losses for January, but HBO Max will also be losing huge titles like the first three "Jurassic Park" movies, the "John Wick" flicks, and "Chinatown." On the TV front, they're getting rid of the entirety of "The Bachelor" franchise and "Babylon 5," disappointing fans of both reality TV and 1990s space operas everywhere.
I've put together five of my favorite films that are leaving the streamer in January 2023, plus we have the entire list of everything that's disappearing.

While 2021 was a dramatic improvement over 2020 in terms of actual big screen moviegoing, the industry was still very much on a slow climb out of the pit of despair. Luckily, 2022 has been far closer to normal in that regard, with a number of big blockbusters arriving throughout the year to serve us, the moviegoing masses. And the best part? It wasn't just superheroes dominating the charts this year. For those who desire more than capes, this year certainly had more than a little to offer, from Indian epics to creature features, and even multiverse-spanning adventures. The scope of blockbusters in 2022 was wide.
and there were some pretty remarkable scenes across the board. We weren't left with a bunch of rubble-filled cities after superheroes saved the day. But we did have Batman! Yet, we also had wild animals, Tom Cruise risking his life in a fighter jet, the king of rock 'n' roll,...

For “Strange World” director, Don Hall, creating the film’s incredible realms was definitely a challenge but one he saw as a beautiful challenge. “We did a lot of research into different biomes and living systems. Ultimately, what I really wanted is just to kind of create a blank space,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
He brought the blank canvas to the animators over at Disney and they let their imaginations go wild. “I was just sort of the cheerleader, you know, ushering them to go weirder, go stranger and just embrace the limits of their creativity, which was boundless. It led to a really unique, specific and beautiful world.”

The entirety of the Jurassic Park franchise has earned over 6 billion dollars at the box office. Six. Billion. Dollars. The Michael Crichton novel about nature being too chaotic to control made a meteoric impact on pop culture, and even science itself, after the first movie’s revolutionary plot and special effects made people believe they were watching dinosaurs on the big screen.
The latest installment of the dinosaur adventure series came just this year with the conclusion Jurassic World: Dominion. Empire sat down with Colin Trevorrow as the writer/director addressed the issue of the most recent film pivoting its focus away from the dinosaurs to a different conflict altogether. One big criticism the movie faced was that it was more about genetically modified locusts than a society overrun by prehistoric beasts.
Trevorrow admitted it was done as he feels the franchise is actually unfranchisable,

For better or for worse, the "Jurassic World" saga drew to a close with "Jurassic World Dominion." It's a film that promised to explore the battle between humans and dinosaurs to become Earth's dominant species, only to take a hard turn right and focus instead on a plot that involves giant locusts. The whole thing comes across as an attempt to bring the "Jurassic" movies back to the ideas about chaos (in a scientific sense) and ecosystems that pervade Michael Crichton's original "Jurassic Park" novel and its sequel, "The Lost World."
It, uh, didn't work.
On the plus side, the "Jurassic" films ending (for now) frees up "Jurassic World" trilogy co-lead Bryce Dallas Howard to go and work on other projects. In-between playing Claire Dearing in those movies, Howard kicked her directing career into gear, doing a stellar job calling the shots on multiple episodes of "The Mandalorian" and "The Book of Boba Fett.

You just can’t get away from David Warner. Whether you’re watching an episode of Babylon 5 or hearing his voice as Ra’s al Ghul in Batman: The Animated Series, there’s a ubiquity to David Warner that all true fans of superheroes, science fiction, and fantasy know without thinking about it. Yes, Warner did a lot of work that wasn’t sci-fi or fantasy, but his omnipresence within those genres is partly what made him so beloved. Warner passed away recently at the age of 80, and because he’s been in soooo many things we’ve all loved, it feels difficult to accept that he’s gone.
It would be impossible to list every single one of Warner’s projects, so instead here is a curated David Warner movie marathon, highlighting some of his greatest sci-fi and fantasy hits, and a few deep cuts you may not have seen.

I've never dedicated time to write about my all-time favorite movies, nor have I made any lists. However, it would be nearly impossible for Jurassic Park to be left off of such a list. A masterpiece that quickly turned into a classic, and even though The Lost World and Jurassic World are decent enough, the saga gave rise to drastically inferior sequels on every level. Despite the tremendous disappointment that Fallen Kingdom caused most viewers, its cliffhanger finale created a terrific premise for the next installment. How could anyone fail to succeed with a story involving dinosaurs scattered around the world again while humanity learns to coexist with them? Unfortunately, Jurassic World Dominion achieves this "feat" of failure. With much anticipation, Colin Trevorrow stated that this was the film he always wanted to make within the famous saga, but the truth is that the most interesting and exciting part of...

A key element of “Jurassic World Dominion” is Jeff Goldblum’s Dr. Ian Malcolm reunion with the original “Jurassic Park” crew, as the quartet share the screen for the first time since 1993.
But that plot point isn’t the only “Jurassic” milestone for 2022. Attention must also be paid to the 25th anniversary of the dinosaur franchise’s second film, 1997’s “The Lost World: Jurassic Park.”
Goldblum’s Malcolm took the lead in that movie, which debuted on May 23, 1997 and saw the sci-fi action move from the original park on Isla Nublar to Isla Sorna (otherwise known as Site B) where the resurrected dinosaurs roam freely.
After a young girl is attacked on the island, Jurassic Park founder John Hammond (the late Richard Attenborough) recruits a team, led by Malcolm, to study and document the animals in their natural habitat in hopes of encouraging the government to enact a policy of non-interference.

This article contains mild Jurassic World Dominion spoilers.
We all agree that Jurassic Park is a masterpiece, right? Perfectly directed and acted, and augmented by one of John Williams’ best scores. And we should also agree that the rest of them are trash. To be clear, I don’t mean that derisively—killer dinosaur movies should be kind of trashy. While Steven Spielberg brought a sense of wonder and genuine emotion to the first film, not even he could make the sequel anything more than a nasty movie about dinosaurs eating people.
That fact has been the blessing and curse of the Jurassic franchise. Only one movie has been able to transcend the trashy joy of dino mayhem, but even the worst of the series still has dinosaurs, and dinosaurs are awesome.
For that reason, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to rank the Jurassic films. Instead...

The "Jurassic Park" franchise moved like clockwork for its first several years of existence. Steven Spielberg's original 1993 blockbuster classic based on Michael Crichton's book of the same name was such a big hit that it was impossible for Universal Pictures not to turn it into a franchise. Four years later in 1997, Spielberg returned to direct "The Lost World," and four years after that, Joe Johnston took over the director's chair for 2001's "Jurassic Park III," a movie that effectively killed the franchise for 14 years until "Jurassic World" arrived in 2015.
