“A Knight’s Tale” director Brian Helgeland revealed in a career retrospective interview with Inverse that his efforts to make a sequel to his 2001 medieval action-comedy classic were apparently thwarted by the Netflix algorithm.
“When we finished ‘A Knight’s Tale,’ we were already thinking about making the sequel as a pirate film,” Helgeland said. “The plot revolved around Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) kidnapping Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon) and taking her to Constantinople. They end up as galley slaves after their boat is captured by pirates. There’s a prisoner on the boat who has a treasure map tattooed on his back, but he keeps getting flogged for indiscipline. The guys volunteer to take turns getting flogged in this prisoner’s place, so the map isn’t erased. Sony didn’t want to do it.”

One of the highlights at India’s Cinevesture International Film Festival and market was a frank, philosophical on-stage chat between veteran filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and his singer-songwriter-composer daughter Kaveri.
Shekhar Kapur is known for his eclectic oeuvre that spans Indian films “Masoom” and “Mr. India,” hard-hitting biopic “Bandit Queen,” the Oscar-winning “Elizabeth,” starring Cate Blanchett, “The Four Feathers,” starring Heath Ledger, and recent romcom “What’s Love Got to Do with It?”
When asked to reveal something unknown about himself, Shekhar Kapur spoke about his hidden fears, saying that people who think he is cool don’t “see the panic in my head every morning.”
“Fear drives me. I find panic is a huge form of creativity. When I, for example, shoot a film, I plan like a general going to war because you never know where the bullet is coming from. And then when I get to the set… suddenly,...

You’d be forgiven if you thought the above photo was taken backstage at a rehearsal for the Oscars. After all, the joyful colliding of two supernovas does not happen just anywhere, anytime down here on earth. But this particular close encounter took place at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival, at the premiere for “Up in the Air.”
Behind the scenes at the Ryerson Theatre, George Clooney and Oprah Winfrey found themselves sharing the same space and posed for TheWrap creative director Jeff Vespa.
“This is the typical kind of Toronto happening where I’ll get a call and they’ll be like, ‘Get over here right now! Because George Clooney is going to meet with Oprah,” Vespa said. “You have to race over to one of the theaters, and you rush backstage and wait around until the moment happens.”
Vespa has documented countless such moments throughout his career, at Toronto,...

Newer theatrical releases arriving on the streamer in June include “TÁR,” “Armageddon Time,” and “M3GAN.”

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.
The real fireworks this month come from a ludicrously deep bench of library TV and movie titles. Give them a look for yourself below but if we were to highlight just a few,...

It seems we are living through a phase of so-called “cancel culture” these days. Just this week, Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced it will no longer publish six lesser-known books by the famed children’s author due to offensive and racist depictions. Mr. Potato Head is now non-gender. Some episodes of The Muppet Show has special warning labels on Disney+. Aunt Jemima is Ko’d on the syrup shelves. In a sweeping wave of reassessing cultural images we have grown up with in our American life, a new and more sensitive spotlight is being presented on the way we view the past through the prism of a more politically correct 2021.

When it released Wonder Woman 1984 to its HBO Max servers in December, WarnerMedia made it abundantly clear that it was ready for a new era of movie distribution. Now, in its list of new releases for February 2021, Warner is attempting another grand experiment for HBO Max.
Judas and the Black Messiah premieres on HBO Max this Feb. 12 and is by every indication the kind of film that awards shows go gaga over. Both Daniel Kaluuya and and Lakeith Stanfield look to be at the top of their respective games in this story about Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and the FBI that wants to take him down. Will this have the same rhetorical oomph on the small screen? Guess we’ll find out!

It’s a classic from the Golden Year of 1939, directed in fine style by Wild Bill Wellman and well cast with Paramount stars Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, and Robert Preston, and with Brian Donlevy as one of the movies’ most hissable villains. The popular story has been remade and spoofed innumerable times, yet this remains the indelible best version. A commentary with William Wellman Jr. and Frank Thompson points out many things we didn’t notice before, including where some excised scenes belong, and what originally happened in them.

Paul Feldsher, a former film producer, Miramax consultant and longtime friend at various points to both Annabella Sciorra and Harvey Weinstein, testified under subpoena in Weinstein’s rape trial Thursday that Sciorra drank alcohol and used prescription sedatives well before what he says the actress once referred to as merely a “crazy” sexual encounter with Weinstein.
Called to testify by Weinstein’s defense in an apparent attempt to discredit the actress’ previous testimony that her drinking and drug problems started after she was raped by Weinstein, Feldsher, a former ICM agent, presented a fairly unflattering depiction of the woman he once considered a very close friend.
Although acknowledging that he and Sciorra haven’t been in touch for seven years, Feldsher said he still cares about the actress and considers her a friend, then said that Sciorra used to joke about taking sedatives and that she’d once described the...

Harvey Weinstein’s defense team kicked off their case Thursday afternoon, calling a former friend of Annabella Sciorra’s to undermine her allegation that the producer raped her in the early 1990s.
Paul Feldsher, a former ICM agent and producer of several Miramax films, said that Sciorra was one of his closest friends for several years. He testified that they once took a long walk, during which she admitted having done “this crazy thing” with Weinstein.
“My understanding was that she fooled around with him,” Feldsher said. “I don’t recall it being stressful.”
Feldsher worked as a producer or executive producer on five Miramax films in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including “The Four Feathers” and “Get Over It.” He also acknowledged that the Weinstein Co. had paid him $60,000 for work he had done in 2016 or 2017 as a consulting producer on “The Upside.”

A Tribute to King Kong takes place as part of the The St. Louis International Film Festival Sunday, Nov. 6 beginning at 6:00pm at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium. The first film screened will be the new documentary Long Live The King, which explores the enduring fascination with one of the biggest stars — both literally and figuratively — in Hollywood history: the mighty King Kong. Produced and directed by Frank Dietz and Trish Geiger, the creative team behind the award-winning “Beast Wishes,” the documentary devotes primary attention to the 1933 classic, celebrating the contributions of filmmakers Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, stars Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, and Bruce Cabot, writer Edgar Wallace, and especially stop-motion innovator Willis O’Brien. But Kong’s legacy is also fully detailed: the sequel “Son of Kong,” the cinematic kin “Mighty Joe Young,” the Dino DeLaurentis and Peter Jackson remakes, even the Japanese versions by Toho Studios.

In 2002, Hossein Amini penned the Heath Ledger epic remake The Four Feathers, then passed nine years before reappearing on the scene with screenwriting turns on Drive, Snow White and the Huntsman, and 47 Ronin in rapid succession. Riding the wave of success, he switched gears and made his feature directorial debut with The Two Faces of January, starring the powerhouse trio of Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst, and rising star Oscar Isaac. Borrowing heavily from classic Hitchcockian tropes, the slow-burning thriller endeavors to be a location period film of love, intrigue, and danger in the great tradition of To Catch A Thief.

Continuing in the tradition of Patricia Highsmith’s set of globetrotters and vacationing daytrippers who dip their toes not only in foreign backdrops, but in tend to find themselves in the most inconvenient of situations, it is the American novelist’s 1964 novel that finds a suitor in British-Iranian writer (and now turned director in his own right) Hossein Amini.

From Mickey Rourke to Robert Downey Jr, Hollywood loves a comeback almost as much as it loves anointing a hot new talent. But there’s something decidedly poignant about the return of Wes Bentley. Fifteen years ago, he was that hot new talent who played the misfit neighbour Ricky Fitts in Sam Mendes’ American Beauty. Two years later, he made the period drama The Four Feathers with Heath Ledger, by which point he was in the grip of a damaging heroin and cocaine habit – formed to “escape expectations”, he says.

The trailer for The Two Faces of January, a new film starring Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst, has been released in anticipation of its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival this week. The movie is an adaptation of a novel by Patricia Highsmith, who also wrote The Talented Mr. Ripley. If you were a fan of that ominous tale of envy, obsession, and murder, then this story promises a similar smorgasbord. If you read “Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst” and just skipped to the trailer, then great. I would’ve done the same.

FX has begun development of an event series about Rasputin, the Russian peasant turned mystic who became an advisor to the Imperial family the Romanovs in the early 20th century.
Rasputin's influence, partly due to his ability to treat the hemophilia of Tsar Nicholas II's son, grew to the point that rivals tried several times to kill him (and succeeded in 1916).
Tales of black magic and sexual deviancy surrounded him while his involvement with the Romanovas gave ammunition to the rising Bolshevik movement which ultimately lead to the end of the Russian Empire.
The series aims to explore the controversial man and figure out the truth behind the folklore. "Prison Break" creator Paul Scheuring will pen the script based on Douglas Smith's upcoming book, while filmmaker Shekhar Kapur ("Elizabeth," "The Four Feathers") is set to direct and executive produce.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, "Hunger Games" star Wes Bentley opened up about his past battle with heroin addiction.
"I put up such a wall that I didn't even go and meet with these great directors whom I respected and admired so much," he told THR. Bentley would take long breaks in between films and didn't shoot anything between 2000 and 2003. "I wasn't bringing my A game to any of them," he said. "I don't know if I was bringing my B game. I just kind of didn't care and [was] coasting."
The 34-year-old star gained fame when he appeared in "American Beauty" in 1998, and according to THR he began using drugs to "escape expectations." During that time, he reportedly turned down opportunities to work with Christopher Nolan, Tim Burton and Ang Lee.

Wes Bentley shot to fame at just 21 years old when he played mysterious boy-next-door Ricky Fitts in the Oscar-winning film, "American Beauty". After a series of personal setbacks throughout his twenties, the 34-year-old actor returned to the big screen — in a big way — as head gamemaker Seneca Crane in 2012's "The Hunger Games". (That beard, though.)
His newest release, "The Time Being", premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and will open in limited theaters July 26. Bentley plays Daniel, a struggling young artist who is given a slew of strange assignments — think: film children in a playground — by a quiet, reclusive millionaire named Warner (Frank Langella). Through this process, Daniel discovers the importance of balancing his personal relationships with his ambitions as an artist.

The decision was made by the Board of Directors of the Biennale chaired by Paolo Baratta, upon recommendation of the Director of the Venice Film Festival Alberto Barbera.
“Shekhar Kapur is not only the Indian filmmaker who enjoys the greatest international prestige – which he earned for the success of the films he made in Bollywood in the early stages of his career, and later for having directed some of the major English and American productions – he is also a refined intellectual humanist interested in social issues,” as stated on the official website of the festival.
Shekhar Kapur made his directing debut in 1983 with the family drama Masoom, and then made Mr. India (1987). He won critical acclaim for Bandit Queen (1994). His Hollywood production Elizabeth (1998) was nominated for seven Oscars.

In an ideal world, Australian actor Heath Ledger would have been celebrating his thirty-third birthday today. Heartbreakingly, he isn't here for it: the actor passed away from an accidental prescription drugs overdose just over four years ago, on January 22, 2008. At the time, the actor was shooting Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," and the director managed to finish the film with Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law paying tribute to the late actor by joining the production.
Ledger had a rare talent that seemingly wowed everyone he would work with -- Matt Damon, who appeared with the actor in Gilliam's "The Brothers Grimm," recently called him "the best actor I ever worked with" -- and it's hard not to be distraught at the thought of the performances we'll never get to see. But even so, Ledger left behind an enormously impressive body of work for one so young,...

After long-gestating delays on Paramount Pictures’ attempts to bring a new Jack Ryan thriller to the screen with the formerly titled ‘Moscow’, Variety reports that pre-production has hit another snag as the film has just lost its director.
Former Lost chief director Jack Bender has exited the film that would have marked his feature directorial debut when it goes in front of cameras this summer.
Chris Pine is still attached to play the Tom Clancy created Jack Ryan, the cerebral C.I.A. agent in a new origin story/reboot. Ryan has previously been portrayed by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck in four previous high-profile movies. The plan is still to shoot this summer when Pine has finished playing Captain Kirk for the second time in the currently filming Star Trek sequel.
But the hunt is now on to find a new filmmaker who will be available to...
