The global Harry Potter community had long been celebrated as a place of companionship and inclusivity. But the community’s reputation took a severe hit in recent years, ever since Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling came out with statements that are seen as transphobic. This led to a fission within the fandom, as people in the Harry Potter Community took sides on the issue for or against Rowling.
As the person who portrayed Harry Potter in the movies, Daniel Radcliffe was caught in the middle of the discourse. The actor came out with a clear stance, expressing his support for the transgender community and condemning alleged transphobic remarks by Rowling. Now, Radcliffe has revealed that while his stance has heavily strained his relationship with J.K. Rowling, he has no intention of backing down from his statements.

Jk Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise is one of the highest-grossing film franchises in the world. Based on seven novels in the series, the films starred Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint as the leading trio and saw fans grow up along with the children in the films. The films and novels were an international phenomenon at the time of release.
While the main storyline ended with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the studio reportedly wanted to begin a spinoff franchise to expand the franchise. The producers reportedly initially had an idea that involved Newt Scamander finding new beasts, which Jk Rowling shot down in favor of her iteration of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

J.K. Rowling, for the better part of this decade, has been tarnishing her reputation with her controversial remarks online. And things were particularly heated up recently after Scotland passed a Hate Crime and Public Order Act. This ruling introduced more strict measures against hate speech, including misgendering individuals. It could potentially lead to jail time of seven years for individuals found guilty of making such comments.

Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.

Warner Bros. Discovery has an update about the Harry Potter TV series and not every Potterhead is rooting for the project after the update. David Zaslav, Wbd CEO, has suggested that author J.K. Rowling will be heavily involved in the series. Earlier, it was reported that she would executive produce the series. Rowling’s inflammatory comments about the trans community have made her a controversial figure in recent times.
Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson in the first film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the last movie in the film franchise, was released in 2011 and Zaslav believes that it is time for a reinvention. However, the franchise had not been dormant, as three movies came out in the Fantastic Beasts series.

Harry Potter and Twilight are two of the biggest young-adult film franchises of all time, and they put Daniel Radcliffe and Robert Pattinson on the map.
Interestingly, the blockbusters also signify near misses for one actor who auditioned for the chance to play both Harry Potter and Edward Cullen.
Daniel was only 11 years old when he portrayed the beloved boy wizard alongside Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2000.
Eight years later, Robert was 22 when he was cast as the lead glittering vampire alongside Kristen Stewart in the first Twilight movie.
The franchises featured large and talented casts, and there’s a common thread between them – an actor who landed supporting roles in both after auditioning for the lead. He opened up about the experience in an interview.

Harry Potter is one of the most significant franchises across various mediums, encompassing books, movies, and games. The series features a diverse cast of characters, including Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and many others. Daniel Radcliffe took on the challenging role of Harry Potter in the film series, showcasing his talent at a young age. With that said, Millie Bobby Brown decimated Daniel Radcliffe in just one line after he gave her tons of compliments.

Anyone who didn’t perfectly predict this year’s Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design has a uniquely valid excuse. This applies to all but a tiny fraction of Gold Derby’s nearly 11,000 prognosticators, whose solid consensus ultimately conflicted with the academy’s highly unusual decision to populate both categories with the same five films: “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Since these two craft races have only been completely congruent twice before, it’s especially understandable that very few people anticipated this outcome.
The film that mainly tripped folks up in this case was “Napoleon,” which garnered support from only 49.9% of our users in the costume design race and scraped by with a production design backing rate of just 7.5%. In the former category, many had trouble settling on two of four on-the-bubble candidates, while the latter’s pesky fifth slot...

The first book in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" ("Sorcerer's Stone" here in the States) was first published in June of 1997. It was written by author J.K. Rowling, long before she had been driven mad by an infuriating streak of unabashed transphobia that she insists on adhering to. Thanks to years of bigoted screaming, Rowling's legacy has been wholly tainted, and it's hard to read her lighthearted children's fantasy books without thinking of her poisonous worldview. If one checks out the Harry Potter books from the library, however, one can still enjoy the adventures and complex Wizarding World of Harry Potter without giving Rowling another dime.
Before her mind snapped open in public, however, the Harry Potter books — and their subsequent movie adaptations — were widely beloved. The title character was an impoverished 11-year-old who was forced to live in a closet with his abusive aunt and uncle.

The "Hunger Games" movies are having a moment. Again.
Although many would argue that the original series rode the post-Harry Potter YA wave to blockbuster success, this series has stood the test of time while many of its peers have vanished into the ether for one clear reason: These movies are good. Sometimes extremely good. And their dystopian science fiction world -- one that is politically tumultuous and emotionally fraught and deeply interested in the suffering of the innocent and the necessity of revolution in the face of tyranny -- feels more relevant now than it did over a decade ago. The newest film, the grim prequel "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," feels ripped out of our collective consciousness. These movies were blockbusters when they first arrived. Now, they feel like premonitions ... and life rafts.

A film version of the videogame has been in development for nearly a decade, beginning in 2015 when Gil Kenan, who directed “Monster House” and who just directed the as-yet-untitled sequel “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (due out next year), signed on to direct and co-write. That began a fairly tumultuous production cycle that at one point saw “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” filmmaker Chris Columbus sign on.
But now it’s finally here, with a film directed and co-written (with Seth Cuddeback and original creator Scott Cawthon) by Emma Tammi and featuring animatronic characters created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Blumhouse, the production company behind “Paranormal Activity,” “Get Out” and more recently “M3GAN,” is overseeing the film.
But how do you watch “Five Nights at Freddy’s?” Read on to find out!

HBO has readied a documentary about David Holmes, the stuntman who stood in for Daniel Radcliffe in almost all of the Harry Potter films before he was paralyzed on the set of Deathly Hallows Part 1. The film, entitled David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived, premieres on HBO and Max November 15th. Update: Watch the trailer below.
Holmes, described as a “prodigious teenage gymnast from Essex, England,” worked as Radcliffe’s stunt double from 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone until 2010’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, when he broke his neck while performing a stunt and became paralyzed from the chest down. Directed by Dan Hartley, the documentary tells his story with behind-the-scenes material from Holmes’ stunt career, personal footage from the past decade, and interviews with friends, family, and crew members. Radcliffe is among those featured in the film and also serves as an executive producer.

Daniel Radcliffe is partnering up with David Holmes, his longtime stunt double in the Harry Potter films, to create a documentary based on his life.
Holmes was brought onto the film franchise ahead of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and, over the course of 10 years, he and Radcliffe formed an “inextricable bond.” However, in the penultimate film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Holmes had a tragic accident on set that left him paralyzed after a spinal injury.
“As Daniel and his closest stunt colleagues rally to support David and his family in their moment of need, it is David’s extraordinary spirit of resilience that becomes their greatest source of strength and inspiration,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement about the documentary, which is directed by Dan Hartley (Lad: A Yorkshire Story).

Harry Potter and Twilight are two of the biggest young-adult film franchises of all time, and they put Daniel Radcliffe and Robert Pattinson on the map.
Both blockbusters also signify near misses for one actor who auditioned for the chance to play Harry Potter and Edward Cullen.
Daniel was only 11 years old when he portrayed the beloved boy wizard alongside Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2000.
Eight years later, Robert was 22 when he was cast as the glittering vampire lead alongside Kristen Stewart in the first Twilight movie.
The franchises featured large and talented casts, and there’s a common thread between them – an actor who landed supporting roles in both after auditioning for the lead. He opened up about the experience in an interview.

The next big thing in Hollywood was created by a middle school teacher from Texas. To his fans, he’s Uncle Rick.
In the crowd of a Los Angeles theater, where Uncle Rick has stopped on his most recent book tour, two teenage sisters gush that they drove for nearly two hours to make it here tonight — longer, when you account for parking — but it was worth it. Like Percy Jackson, the character that made Uncle Rick famous, the older sister has Adhd, while the younger sister never liked reading. And Percy also landed in Los Angeles on his very first quest. So by the logic set out in Uncle Rick’s books, these girls were born to be heroes.
“Here’s what I think is gonna happen,” the 15-year-old whispers. “He’s gonna pull me out of the audience and say, ‘I want you in my show.’” Her sister...

Before the “Harry Potter” films, there were J.K. Rowling’s books. The first book, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” was published in 1997. Nearly 26 years later, eleven films, one reunion special and a Universal experience dedicated to the magical Wizarding World have grown out of Rowling’s literary staple in childhood fiction.

We’re remembering the lives of those lost from the Harry Potter film franchise.
The first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was released in theaters in 2001 and in the years that followed, the beloved franchise saw so many stars rise to fame with their performances.
Since filming of the movies ended in 2011, several actors and actresses have passed away. The ages of these stars range from the young age of 18 to 91. One star just tragically passed away in September 2023.
Our continued thoughts are with the family, friends, and loved ones of these late actors and actresses.

Revisiting the "Harry Potter" films in the last few years has been a bit of a challenge, given ... well ... its author. But since thousands of people put their hearts and souls into that series for a decade, I cannot help but get swept up in it all whenever I've decided to throw them on, even the entries that I don't think are all that great. What comes into focus the more I see the films is that the Mvp of the franchise is production designer Stuart Craig.
Because most big-budget blockbusters now are either filmed in front of a green screen in a parking lot in Atlanta, Georgia, or on a soundstage with a Volume screen and light system, seeing something constructed like Hogwarts — with its massive scope and intricate detail — makes the "Harry Potter" films feel bigger than just about everything else. The nostalgia of 1980’s coming-of-age films is an unbeatable feeling. There’s nothing quite as comforting as sitting on your couch on a rainy day and watching a good old-fashioned adventure from your formative years. And for some, Richard Donner’s The Goonies is the pinnacle of such nostalgia. The movie follows a group of teenagers who call themselves The Goonies who embark on a treasure hunt through the town’s underground caves, hoping to find the legendary ‘rich stuff’ that local icon One-Eyed-Willy left behind. Along the way, they’re in for encounters with the town’s local crime family, The Fratelli’s. They’re after the treasure themselves and they’re willing to go to nearly any length to get it.
The movie is a classic, of course, but something that we feel has been missing from the internet is speculation on the film’s many themes and...

Before we knew about the beliefs of author J.K. Rowling, the world fell in love with the Harry Potter books. Then we got to see them on the big screen with the eight-film series. We were introduced to actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, and we got to see the magical school of our childhood dreams come to life.

Harry Potter’s Dumbledore was played by veteran actor Michael Gambon, who picked up the role from Richard Harris. But before Gambon, Ian McKellen was courted for the role. An insult, however, discouraged McKellen from joining the Harry Potter franchise.
Why Ian McKellen turned down playing Dumbledore Ian McKellen | Joe Maher/WireImage
Thespian Richard Harris was the first actor to portray the Hogwarts professor. He only appeared in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets before his passing. Still, his brief appearance in the Harry Potter films left a lasting impact.
The wizard franchise would later cast Gambon as Dumbledore, who would portray the character for the rest of the films. Before Gambon, however, McKellen was briefly in talks to potentially replace Harris.

While there is still a chunk of the year left to go, the summer movie season is officially behind us as "The Equalizer 3" topped the charts over Labor Day weekend. With that, we move into fall where awards season hopefuls will enter the fold, and horror movies will look to cash in around the Halloween season. Sure, a movie could break out big between now and December 31 but, by and large, the biggest movies of the year are probably behind us. And, for the first time in more than 20 years, the three biggest of the big movies are not sequels.

It’s a magical discovery that could be worth up to £20,000.
A school close to Oxford has found a proof copy of Jk Rowling’s first Harry Potter novel after fearing that the ultra-rare book had been lost. Only 200 copies were believed to have been printed by Bloomsbury.
The book, which even spells Rowling’s name as Ja Rowling at one point, was purchased in 1997 for £1 by St Kenelm’s Primary School in the English village of Minster Lovell.
It was available in the school’s library but went largely untouched as children preferred to pick up editions of the novel with illustrated covers.
The school removed it from the library in 2002 after recognizing that the book may be valuable, but it went missing in 2015 and there were concerns it had been trashed with other old paperbacks. It was then rediscovered this year during a spring clean.

Lego has been churning out "Harry Potter" franchise building brick playsets ever since "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" launched into theaters back in 2001. At the time, Lego was still producing minifigures that were all yellow, and they had not yet regularly crafted minifigures with accurate skin colors and features. But that's not the only advancement that Lego has seen in the two decades since the Lego Harry Potter collection began. Building brick technology and engineering have made it so the latest Lego sets inspired by the Wizarding World can bring the franchise's magic to life with impressive detail, and their latest release is no exception, even if it's on a much smaller scale.
On September 1, Lego is releasing the Hogwarts Castle and Grounds as a 2,660-piece micro-scale model that allows fans to build the entire wizarding school castle and some of the surrounding geography, complete with some fun franchise Easter eggs sprinkled throughout.

Ginny Weasley was measly in the “Harry Potter” film franchise. At least when it came to lines, said Bonnie Wright, the woman who played the character.
Wright, now 32, was just 9 years old when she was cast as Ginny Weasley, the sister of Ron Weasley (played by Rupert Grint in the films) and future wife of Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe).
On Tuesday’s episode of Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast, Wright expressed disappointment that Ginny was not more prominent in the films.
“I definitely feel there was anxiety toward performing and doing the best thing as my character built,” Wright said. “Like, Oh gosh, will I do justice to this character that people love? So that was always hard to do, especially when, inevitably, a lot of the scenes of every character were chopped down from the book to the film. So you didn’t really have as much to show in the film.

‘Harry Potter’ Star Bonnie Wright Says Her Lack of Screen Time in Films Was a “Little Disappointing”
Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter franchise, is opening up about her time in Hogwarts and why she was frustrated over her character’s limited screen time in the films.
During a recent episode of Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, the actress, who was just 9 years old when she was cast in the film, admitted that she had some anxiety going into filming because she wanted to do the beloved character justice.
“I definitely feel there was anxiety toward performing and doing the best thing as my character built,” Wright said. “It’s like, ‘Oh gosh, will I do justice to this character that people love?’ So that was always hard to do, especially when, inevitably, a lot of the scenes of every character were chopped down from the book to the films. So you didn’t really have as much to show in the films.

On the latest episode of Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast (via Insider), “Harry Potter” actor Bonnie Wright admitted that her character’s lack of screen time in the Warner Bros. film franchise was “a little bit disappointing.” Wright played Ginny Weasley across the eight “Harry Potter” movies, and she was just 9 years old when she filmed “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Little did she know then that Ginny Weasley would become a prominent supporting character and the wife of Harry Potter in the books.
“I definitely feel there was anxiety toward performing and doing the best thing as my character built, for instance,” Wright said. “Like, ‘Oh gosh, will I do justice to this character that people love?’ So that was always hard to do, especially when, inevitably, a lot of the scenes of every character were chopped down from the book to the film. So you...

Both the 2001 film "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and the 2002 sequel "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" starred the legendary Richard Harris as Professor Albus Dumbledore, the elderly wizard principal of a secret boarding school for child wizards and witches. The school, called Hogwarts, was a vast and mysterious place, full of secret passages, living paintings, shifting staircases, and hidden rooms that contain ineffable magical secrets. The two films, both directed by Chris Columbus, are the only two in the series to possess a sense of glittering wonderment. As the title character (played by Daniel Radcliffe) explored the world of wizards and witches, he was constantly confronting unusual and astonishing things that left him speechless.
Overseeing Harry's wonderment was Dumbledore, depicted in the first two movies as kind, soft-spoken, and grandfatherly. He understood that dangers lurked around every corner, but bothered to understand the inner lives of the...

"Harry is spent. The crowd is destroying its throats calling Harry's name. Harry feels right with himself. He's down there, a new God who has found his calling. He holds up the Snitch and bellows 'I am a beautiful animal! I am a destroyer of worlds! I am Harry f***ing Potter!' And, dear reader, at last, the world was quiet."
The above passage comes from "Wizard People, Dear Reader," an unauthorized, parodic "book on tape" version of the movie "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," written and performed by comedian Brad Neely. The passage comes at the end of a match of Quidditch (which Neely mistakenly called Cribbage), a sport in Harry Potter's wizarding world that is, essentially, a midair version of rugby, played while riding flying broomsticks. Neely exaggerates the epic moment from "Sorcerer's Stone," of course, but in 2001, when Chris Columbus' film first came out, audiences...

When a movie comes out and makes a billion dollars, you can rest assured it’s going to get a sequel. Such was the case with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (check out our Wtf episode on it). But, typically it takes years for a sequel to come out, but in this case, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was ready to come out just one year later, almost to the day! It turns out Warner Bros was so enthusiastic about how the first Harry Potter film would be received that the sequel was already in the works, allowing them to start shooting the sequel only three days after the first film came out. Unlike other big franchises, such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the films were not shot at the same time, which made the undertaking of getting a sequel in theatres within a year...
