Updated with the latest: The morning after the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for Northwest Los Angeles and parts of Ventura County, videos began surfacing online of a short funnel reaching down toward a swirling cloud of debris on the ground about 50 miles away. Local (and national) TV news outlets were soon all over the incident, which took place in Montebello.
Nws confirmed that the tornado — whose strength has not yet been measured — hit around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday. The storm was focused in a largely industrial district, and Montebello Fire Department officials said that city inspectors examined 17 buildings in the affected area, and 11 of them were red-tagged, or marked unsuitable for occupation. Fire authorities also said one person was injured.
Video from the scene shows portions of rooftops ripped off industrial structures and debris swirling in the air.

Remember 1984’s “GhostSmashers” aka “GhostStoppers”? Of course you do. With a star-studded cast featuring John Belushi (Peter Venkman), Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stantz), Jeff Goldblum (Egon Spengler), Eddie Murphy (Winston Zeddemore), John Candy (Louis), Sandra Bernhard (Janine) and Paul Reubens (Ivo Shandar/Gozer), the future-set supernatural comedy in which roving teams of ghost catchers protect humanity from the supernatural, directed by Ivan Reitman, cost a whopping $300 million to make, featured hundreds of monsters, including a giant marshmallow man, and spawned not one but two sequels; the second of which got smoothly underway recently with the full, gracious participation of all of the original cast.
Ok, all of that happened in a parallel universe, where casting decisions went the other way, Dan Aykroyd’s original script got the green light, where perhaps dogs and cats live together in mass hysteria...but we got “Ghostbusters” instead. We wouldn't trade.
On the anniversary of...

I was desperately fishing about for an appropriate final post for 2010 when I stumbled upon this lovely bit of nostalgia just posted on YouTube. It's a special report on the growing video game phenomenon which aired sometime in 1982 -- nearly thirty freakin' years ago. As spectacularly-coiffed anchorwoman Tawny Little of Kabc's Eyewitness News in Los Angeles states with some certainty, "video games are the latest craze to sweep the country and most of the world, too." Indeed, Tawny, indeed.
This crisply-encoded clip bursts with awkwardly-phrased, once-eye-opening factoids like, "one study estimates that we've spent 75,000 man-years doing this," "these games would not be any fun at all if there were no sound," and my personal favorite, "war games are very big right now." The special report endeavors to delve deep into the video game industry and its associated economics, focusing on pioneering old-school producers like Midway and Taito (Obviously, the report mostly addresses arcade machines,...

How you regard Geraldo Rivera depends heavily on how old you are. Viewers from the 1970s might recognize his award-winning contributions to ABC’s hard-hitting news programs. A decade later, he was infamous for Al Capone’s empty vault and his broken nose from a gutter-dwelling talk-show that helped usher in an era of trash-television. Nothing if not resilient, Rivera recovered to become a cable-news fixture during the O.J. Simpson trials and the Clinton impeachment, and today, he’s the host of Geraldo at Large and a frequent contributor to Fox News’ programs. For 40 years, virtually the only thing that...
