Gideon Winfield, a bank employee, steals money to pay his gambling debts. He marries Clara Worthington, the daughter of a financier, and before many days has requested her father to pay the remainder of his debts. Clara then discovers why he married her. About this time the theft of the bank's funds is discovered, and Clara's father, to avoid notoriety, pays the defalcation, Winfield leaves town. Some time later Clara marries, after hearing that Winfield is dead. He is really alive, and one night is killed by a burglar, when he enters her home to threaten her. Clara is accused of murder, but at the last moment is saved by the burglar, who admits his guilt.
