Only six months have passed and already, 2017 is shaping up to be a banner year for Warner Bros. and its DC Extended Universe.
Much of that buzz can be traced back to the Patty Jenkins-directed Wonder Woman, which is now on the verge of becoming the highest-grossing entry into the Dceu – domestically, at least. It’ll likely achieve said feat by the weekend, but while launching Gal Gadot’s Immortal Warrior onto the silver screen, over the past few months, the Warner Bros. brain trust have been plotting the future of their comic book movie franchise.
Those future-proofing plans have yielded some exciting results, too, including spinoffs in the vein of Gotham City Sirens, Nightwing, and Batgirl, the latter of which will be directed by Joss Whedon.
Due to the personal tragedy that befell Zack Snyder and his family, and Whedon’s subsequent decision to help shepherd Justice League over the finish line,...

Our 22 Favorite Movies Directed by Women in 2016Looking to support great female-directed films? Start here.
Over the years, we’ve heard from our readers that one of the most important things we can do is to help you discover movies that may have slipped by mainstream audiences. And often just as important, our readers ask that we highlight voices that are in the minority in Hollywood. While we’re known for not taking ourselves very seriously, we take this part of our work seriously. Because as many studies have shown, there are some voices that aren’t as well-represented as others. Them’s the facts.
Beyond that, our team has a passion for seeking out and celebrating films directed by women. This is where we often find, as you’re about to see in this list, some of the most unique and interesting stories in the whole of cinema. Another thing we hear often from readers is...

When Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla first joined YouTube, they each received a free iPod nano from the site for signing up. Over ten years later, and Smosh, the channel they named after a junior high inside joke, is the sixth most subscribed channel on YouTube — just after Rihanna’s Vevo, but before Taylor Swift’s.
When they arrived at the IndieWire offices last month to promote their second feature, “Ghostmates,” co-produced by Defy Media and YouTube Red, they each donned crisp black jackets and fresh haircuts. (The latter caused much hubbub from fans during a Facebook live interview.) If “Pokemon In Real Life” is your only Smosh reference point, you might not recognize the sleek young moguls on the screen.

Every December it bears repeating: Anyone who thinks this was a bad year for movies simply hasn’t seen enough. In an age of binge-viewing, a preponderance of must-see premium cable shows and, hell, even smartphone apps that command far more attention most feature-length achievements, the true range of quality cinema is often obscured by the noise of an ever-cluttered media landscape. To really assess the state of modern movies, one look beyond the obvious. Sure, it was a weak year for movies that stand out mainly due to star power and sizable marketing budgets, but those options represent only a small fraction of the marketplace.
The film festival circuit provides an ideal alternative to conventional channels for discovering movies worth talking about all year long — and, if they’re lucky enough to land distribution, they quality for year-end celebration on lists like this one. This year, every single finalist...

Many of us know the Super Nintendo classics, but do you remember all of the console's most underappreciated games?
This year marks 25 years since the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was released; a momentous occasion for video game fans growing up in the 90s. Even though the Big N has released four more consoles since, many Nintendo fans would say the Snes is still the best console that the House of Mario has ever released.
A lot of the console's success has to do its with roster of games. From third-party titles to Nintendo's own franchises, this was an era that showcased the platform's total dominance over the industry, even as the Sega Genesis proved to be a strong competitor. It’s not difficult to see why: just looking at Nintendo's own IPs, it's easy to argue that Super Mario World, Super Metroid, and The Legend Of Zelda...

The Blue Ribbon Awards are film-specific prizes awarded solely by movie critics and writers in Tokyo, Japan.
The awards were established in 1950 by The Association of Tokyo Film Journalists which is composed of film correspondents from seven Tokyo-based sports newspapers. In 1961, the six major Japanese newspapers (Yomiuri Shinbun, Asahi Shinbun, Mainichi Shinbun, Sankei Shimbun, Tokyo Shimbun andNihon Keizai Shinbun) as well as the Japanese Associated Press withdrew their support for the Blue Ribbon Awards and established the Association of Japanese Film Journalists Awards, (which were held a mere six times). In 1967, the awards were cancelled as a result of the Black Mist Scandal, a baseball bribing case. In 1975, the awards were revived, and have continued until the present day. The annual award ceremony is held in a variety of places in Tokyo every February.

Amazon Studios is at work on a bunch of new projects for its streaming service with several important filmmakers involved in them.
First up, "Iron Man 3" and "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" writer/director Shane Black is planning an adaptation of "Edge," George Gilman's spaghetti Western books of the same name. Fred Dekker wrote the teleplay from a story by him and Black will direct while the pair will executive produce with Barry Josephson and David Greenblatt. Dekker is also working with Black on the next "Predator" sequel.
Also in the works, "The Practice" creator David E. Kelley's new legal drama "Trial" and the comedic thriller/family dramedy "The Patriot" from Steve Conrad ("The Pursuit of Happyness") with pilots for both ordered. The latter follows a father working at the state department and his two sons, a senator and a Iraq war veteran with Ptsd who wants to be a folk singer.

The Spring/Summer 2015 runways have brought the focus back to the woman’s body with lingerie-inspired designs. Rihanna, Britney Spears, Lea Michele and more are indulging in the trend and are taking it to new heights. Work fashion’s latest craze into everyday looks by balancing out overexposure with cover-ups and other layering pieces.
Ease your way into the trend by taking a cue from Sarah Hyland, Britney Spears, and Dita Von Teese. The goal is to be chic and demure with a hint of sex appeal. Von Teese subtly exposed her brassiere under a velvet sleeved dress. Hyland teased her black lace bra through a romper with a deep V-neckline. You can also add a layer of sophistication like Spears in a chic white suit paired with a lace-panel camisole.

You won’t need us to tell you that this Thursday, November 27th is Thanksgiving across the States, which means one thing: an abundance of food and celebration. Well, it also means another scenario — that’s right, Black Friday. And so, to commemorate the occasion, Microsoft has unveiled the extensive line-up of games that are due to receive a discount as part of the company’s Deals with Gold promotion.
As is always the case, Xbox players will need to have an Xbox Live subscription in order to gain access to the offers, which will run through until December 1st. Discounting an array of software across both Xbox One and Xbox 360, Microsoft has pulled no punches this year, with some games being available for a full 80% cheaper than their standard price.

ETonline takes a look at this week's 'DWTS' routines.
This week's episode of DWTS was a special My Jam Monday edition, where the songs were chosen by contestants who were able to dance to any music they chose. The routines were hot, the judges were excited, and the stars were ready to show how much they had improved from last week.
Let's take a look at the individual dance numbers and see whose gotten better and who the judges think need more work.

Comic book movies and professional wrestling are two staple parts of the cultural diets of a large chunk of WhatCulture’s readers – so what could be more apt than an article that combines the two? The two forms of entertainment have a number of obvious parallels – most obvious is the fact that they consist of heroes/babyfaces and villains/heels – and it is, therefore, quite unsurprising that certain individuals have partaken in both.
Indeed, over the years, wrestlers have moved in to acting on an increasingly regular basis – starting most prominently with the immortal Hulk Hogan starring in the likes of Rocky III, No Holds Barred and Suburban Commando in the 1980s and early 1990s, followed shortly by the likes of Rowdy Roddy Piper and The Undertaker.
Of course, these days, WWE has its own production company and that has seen the likes of John Cena, Randy Orton,...

Trailer Ryan Lambie 25 Apr 2014 - 07:47
One of Spain's best-known horror franchises takes to the ocean waves in Rec 4: Apocalypse. Here's the latest trailer...
The first two Rec films were highly effective exercises in found-footage horror. Although shot two years apart, they followed directly on from one another, providing a single account of a Barcelona apartment building beset by a bizarre disease. Rec 3: Genesis, meanwhile, took place at a wedding, quickly dropped the shaky-cam format, and added an unexpected comedic edge.
The forthcoming Rec 4: Apocalypse is still shot like a conventional horror movie, but the jokier atmosphere of the previous Rec appears to be absent. Its plot circles back to the first film, too, with that entry's central character, Angela Vidal (Manuela Valesco), emerging on an oil tanker somewhere in the middle of the ocean. Unsurprisingly, there's something grim on board with Angela and the rest of the crew.

It's not unusual for games to be cancelled before release, and some of them could have been great. Here's a pick of 25 promising examples...
Earlier this week, news emerged that Sega Studios Australia had pitched an idea to its parent company called Sega Reborn. These games would have revived some of Sega's classic names from the 80s and 90s - Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Streets Of Rage and Shinobi - and created new games around them, mixing tried-and-tested gameplay with high-res graphics and new ideas. The studio even put together a proof-of-concept video, which gave a rough idea of what a 21st century Golden Axe might look like.
For unknown reasons, Sega decided to pass on the idea, and Sega Studios Australia is set to close later this year - fittingly, perhaps, its last release will be a remake of Castle Of Illusion,...

For years the essay film has been a neglected form, but now its unorthodox approach to constructing reality is winning over a younger, tech-savvy crowd
For a brief, almost unreal couple of hours last July, in amid the kittens and One Direction-mania trending on Twitter, there appeared a very surprising name – that of semi-reclusive French film-maker Chris Marker, whose innovative short feature La Jetée (1962) was remade in 1995 as Twelve Monkeys by Terry Gilliam. A few months earlier, art journal e-flux staged The Desperate Edge of Now, a retrospective of Adam Curtis's TV films, to large audiences on New York's Lower East Side. The previous summer, Handsworth Songs (1986), an experimental feature by the Black Audio Film Collective Salman Rushdie had once attacked as obscurantist and politically irrelevant, attracted a huge crowd at Tate Modern when it was screened shortly after the London riots.

Final act of gay men marrying straight guys’ girlfriends, Chris Colfer talks Course of the Force, and is there a gay moment for Nolan Funk in The Canyons?
We mentioned yesterday that Andrew Garfield had mused that Mj could easily be a guy, and have Peter Parker exploring his sexuality. MTV’s Splashpage thinks that’s a great idea – not just for gay visibility, but for the character. “The most important facets of Spider-Man’s character, I’d say, are his sense of responsibility to do the right thing and his put upon/down on his luck nature. This hero can’t catch a break! When Spider-Man was created in the 1960s, just having him be a teenager was a novel enough idea that it actually made Peter Parker representative of a minority. He was the voice of youth, a leading character that readers could relate to because of his age.

Quentin Tarantino has a long history of dropping popular music into his films, but "Django Unchained" is his first to feature original songs written expressly for his film. The movie's soundtrack features original compositions from the likes of Rick Ross and John Legend alongside vintage tracks from Tupac, James Brown and many more.
Rick Ross's contribution, "100 Black Coffins," hit the web this week. The Big Bawse delivers a typically Ross'ian performance here, lush, smokey vocals over a thundering beat that we're led to believe was produced by Jamie Foxx, but sounds quite a bit like a Lex Luger joint.
In press materials, Tarantino explained the thinking that went into the soundtrack:
I want to thank all the artists who contributed original songs (a first for me) to the picture. Most of these contributions came out of the artists' own inspiration and their illustration of the film's soul is invaluable...

Here at Shadowlocked we try to bring you the best of the current news in the games industry. From now onward we will be bringing you a run down of the weeks most interesting news every Saturday.
1. Mirrors Edge 2 in Production
This passing Wednesday, Ben Cousins, an ex EA Developer stated on his Twitter account that Mirrors Edge 2 is already in production at Dice studios in Stockholm, which came as a surprise to the gaming industry and fans of the original IP. Cousins stated on his Twitter "It is general knowledge that in the Stockholm dev scene that Mirrors Edge 2 is in production at Dice", after an EA employee stated that the studio didn't want to become a "Battlefield factory" in an interview with Official Xbox Magazine.
Although Dice employee Stefan Boberg refuted Cousins' claim by stating that he was a bad source known for criticising his ex employers, "but...

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

Quadrophenia (Criterion) Franc Roddam’s 1979 film based on The Who’s classic rock opera tells the story of working class lad Jimmy (Phil Daniels) struggling to find his identity in a rapidly changing Britain, circa 1965. Quadrophenia (Criterion) Franc Roddam’s 1979 film based on The Who’s classic rock opera tells the story of working class lad Jimmy (Phil Daniels) struggling to find his identity in a rapidly changing Britain, circa 1965. Robert Pattinson in Cronenberg's Cosmopolis
"As Berlinale comes to a close," writes Cineuropa's Fabien Lemercier, "professionals have turned their attention to the 65th Cannes Film Festival, to be held from May 16 to 27, and observers are already speculating about the films that will be selected this year by Thierry Frémaux." What follows is a list of over three dozen pairs of film titles and directors, all "potential contenders." Among the names: David Cronenberg, Abbas Kiarostami, Manoel de Oliveira, Hong Sang-soo, Koji Wakamatsu, Paul Thomas Anderson and last year's Palme d'Or-winner, Terrence Malick.
Also ranking a mention is Michel Gondry, whose The We and the I, as we noted yesterday, has been racking up distributors in Berlin. Today, the Playlist's Simon Dang notes that Omar Sy (Micmacs, Intouchables) has joined Audrey Tautou, Romain Duris, Gad Elmaleh and Léa Seydoux in Gondry's Mood Indigo (formerly known as The Foam of Days), an adaptation of Boris Vian's 1947 novel,...

There’s nothing like time-travel stories that fuel my imagination. I love the whole concept of it, whether it being a trip to the past or the future. Perhaps that is where my love of Doctor Who comes from, the potential idea that somehow a trip to the past can be easily done as a trip to the grocery store.
Of course, beyond Einstein’s theory that states time-travel is not possible –and even with people like Stephen Hawking sort of agreeing with it – it has never stopped science fiction writers from writing books about, or Hollywood cranking out TV and movies about the ability to change your past or future.
It’s also created a college industry on how to handle the rules of time-travel. Up until the idea of quantum mechanics –the idea that there really in a finite number of universes than one single lane- most writes...

Smackdown! October 21st 2011.
We are in Mexico City, Mexico for Smackdown! And who better to join us first but Mexico’s own WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio! And he gets himself a nice response as Michael Cole, Josh Matthews and Booker T welcome us to the show. Del Rio brings up his Last Man Standing match against John Cena. Then he says tonight’s match against Big Show wont be happening after the attack from John Cena on Monday. Del Rio said it was his dream to come here and compete for Mexico but John Cena took it away, so this Sunday he will make Cena pay. And then, something in Spanish. I’m not here to translate though so figure that out yourselves. Teddy Long lands out on stage. Teddy said the doctors say Del Rio is cleared to compete. Teddy asks the people if they want to see Del Rio vs.

The 14th annual Antimatter Film Festival in Vancouver, BC, Canada is an epic 9-day event of expanded cinema performances, feature-length documentaries an a ton of experimental short films and festivals.
There are seven feature documentaries screening including Marie Losier‘s hit The Ballad of Genesis & Lady Jaye, a profile of the pandrogenous entity, Breyer P-Orridge; and Chris Metzler & Lev Kalman’s popular Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, about the legendary ska punk band. Plus, there’s Adele Horne’s And Again and more.
On the expanded cinema front, Antimatter welcomes retrospectives of Kerry Laitala, who will be presenting a selection of her 3D light and motion experiments; and Roger Beebe will screen a series of multi-projector performances.
As for the short films, the real highlight of the fest is a screening of Jaimz Asmundson‘s trippy and powerful The Magus, a fictional/documentary hybrid of his father’s Satanic painting process.

Do you know what studio you should not mess with? "Dark Souls" developer From Software. Those guys will hunt your scrawny hind-end down and beat you mercilessly with a virtual rubber hose. They're like the Charles Bronson of game studios, and when they're mustache begins to twitch, it is fully on.
Apparently, Japanese retail copies of "Dark Souls" got out a couple days too early, and the company has entered these poor schmucks game worlds, absolutely obliterating them.
None of this is too surprising; the guys at From Software teeter between skillful developers that just enjoy giving gamers a hearty challenge, and full blown sadists bent on the destruction of any poor soul that happens to cross one of their games' path. So, when the devs found out that some people had managed to acquire early retail copies – that game is due out September 22 in Japan – they reacted in what...

Another year, another Pokemon Video Game World Championship.
2011 puts the focus on Nintendo DS’s new Pokemon Black and White versions; specifically the one-hundred and fifty two ‘newbies’ added to the ‘mon ranks in its now fifth generation. That’s right, old-school fans, not even Charizard (the arsonist’s nightmare) has a glance at this year’s Us and European nationals. Countries outside of Japan have barely had four months (or an in-game year if, like me, you’ve been unable to peel yourself from your DS) to acquaint themselves with their new fighting team. Orchestrating a fail-safe strategy takes the brains of an Alakazam (that’s a 5,000 Iq that’d put Stephen Hawking to shame), the cunning of a Sneasel and the subtle deception of a Ditto.
Or, for those of you still living in the real world, a few handy lessons from the champions themselves.
So, here it is,...

The Music Room (Criterion) Satyajit Ray’s 1958 masterpiece looks at the life of a fallen aristocrat as a metaphor for an India that is not only becoming Westernized, but modernized technologically and culturally beyond recognition. When the beloved music room, where he has hosted lavish concerts in the past, starts falling into disrepair as attendance drops steadily, the man realizes his way of life is vanishing. Stunningly shot in black & white, one of Ray’s finest works. Bonuses: Documentary on Ray from 1984 by Shyam Benegal; Interviews with Ray biographer Andrew Robinson and filmmaker Mira Nair; Excerpt from 1981 roundtable discussion between Ray, critic Michael Ciment, director Claude Sautet. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
Beauty And The Beast (Criterion) Jean Cocteau’s sublime adaptation of the classic fairy tale become a beloved classic upon its 1946 release, and hasn’t faded since.

School holidays needn't be financial hell. Britain is bursting with free activities – from arts and crafts, festivals, music, cinema and much more
Festivals
1. The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is one of Britain's biggest free events, typically attracting half a million visitors over its four days. This year it takes place on 11-14 August and the schedule includes several "mass ascents", when more than 100 hot-air balloons will take to the skies (weather permitting), "nightglows", where 30 or more balloons "glow in time to music", plus a variety of arena and air displays. It is held at Ashton Court on the edge of Bristol.
2. Four days in August will see Stockton-on-Tees in the north-east of England transformed into a vast performance space when the 24th edition of the Stockton International Riverside Festival rolls into town, bringing with it aerial performers, dancers, comedians and street theatre acts. "Expect the unexpected" is the mantra of the organisers,...

The 8th annual Big Sky Documentary Film Festival is all set to run for ten days this Feb. 11-20 in Missoula, Montana. This year, the fest will have a whopping 140 film programs, a growth that necessitates an expansion from its regular home at the Historic Wilma Theatre — where it will occupy two screens — to also feature screenings at the former Pipestone Mountaineering store.
Special events at the fest include a free opening night screening of How to Die in Oregon sponsored by HBO Documentary Films. The film, directed by Peter D. Richardson, examines the impact the legalization of physician-assisted suicide has had on the state. (In 1994, Oregon was the first state to legalize the practice.)
Also, indie rock band Yo La Tengo will perform their acclaimed live score of the films of pioneering French underwater documentary film director Jean Painlevé, something they have done for other film festivals all over the world.

Heading into its 18th year in 2011, the Chicago Underground Film Festival is the longest-running underground film festival in the world. It used to be tied with the New York Underground Film Festival — both were started in 1994 — until Nyuff closed up shop in 2008.
In 1994, the Internet wasn’t the big promotional tool it is today so neither Nyuff nor Cuff that year had a website; or, if they did, those pages have since vanished off the web. So, details about what these fests screened in their first years have been sketchy. Well, until now for Cuff.
I’m not sure how I stumbled upon it, but I recently discovered that the alternative newsweekly the Chicago Reader had posted up the entire, full lineup of the first annual Chicago Underground Film Festival.
So, I copied that info and reformatted it into the style of Bad Lit’s traditional film festival lineups, which...

One of the things I love most about Boardwalk Empire is the way it seamlessly integrates history into its narrative. Whether it's the Black Sox scandal or the Harding Presidency, we are living and breathing this time intimately with our characters, and that makes every moment seem more poignant and alive.
"Hold Me in Paradise" was filled with more maneuvering than action, but that didn't make it any less entertaining or relevant. Relevant because much of 1.08 showed us that however things may change, things really do stay the same, especially when it comes to politics. It was the political machinations led by Nucky (Steve Buscemi) that sealed Harding's nomination (a womanizer and, according to Nucky, rather a tool) after the convention became deadlocked. Harding's "Return to Normalcy" campaign was an attempt at steering government away from reform and back towards favoritism of the elite establishment (and away from new immigrants...

Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower The Toronto International Film Festival has added even more films to their line-up today as the complete line-up was announced, which ended up causing the festival's server to crash, but I was lucky enough to get in and get out before missing out on the information.
