A solid production but could have been better

I have always loved opera, and I am very fond of a lot of Rossini's work. This said, I don't consider Il Signor Bruschino one of his best, in terms of the story I'd say actually that it's one of his weakest and while there are some witty ensembles few of the arias stick out as memorable. However, even when Rossini is not at his best he is still worth listening to and Il Signor Bruschino has some really pleasant music generally indeed. This production is on the most part very impressive, sadly there are also two lead performances that let it down by some considerable distance. Amelia Felle has a charming presence, but I wasn't too fond of her voice here. For my tastes it was rather uncontrolled and her colouratura is on the smudged side. What did let down the production the most though was Alberto Rinaldi in the title role. His sense of comedy doesn't feel very natural here, while his singing is pretty much all over the place. Granted it is difficult music, but when you're behind the beat often, constantly mumble your words in alternative to enunciating and either sing out of tune or sound as though you're speaking the music to my ears it doesn't sound like great Rossinian singing. However there is much to compensate. David Kuebler has a flexible and handsome voice and handles the farcial elements very well without over-compensating. Carlos Feller is a true basso buffo in every sense, the singing is resonant and he cuts an enigmatic and amusing figure on stage. And then there is the always wonderful Alessandro Corbelli, who gives another great performance with beautiful tone, aristocratic manner and his ever impeccable comic timing and humanity in a role and style that he is more than comfortable in. The production is traditional and visually beautiful, helped by the gorgeous venue, complete with staging that is true to Rossini and to the opera's style. The orchestra play beautifully and stylishly and from Gianluigi Gelmetti's conducting it is clear that this is a conductor who loves and understands Rossini, which always helps. In conclusion, solid but again could have been better. 7/10 Bethany Cox
