Jehane Noujaim, the videographer and producer, began the project when she was the roommate of the documentary's principal character, Kaleil Tuzman. She was previously a producer at MTV.
"The Competitor" who is donning the govWorks.com cap, Bryan R. Mundy of ezGov.com, died in a house fire six days before the movie premiered at Sundance.
The CEO Kaleil Isaza Tuzman was convicted of fraud in 2015, based on fraudulent accounting practices for a separate company after these events.

The filmmakers funded this documentary with money out of their own pocket. Moreover, the filmmakers often spent 18 hours per day with the two main guys for over a year during the shooting of this movie.
