Reality TV judging: It’s important. I can only commit to a TV talent show if I believe there are tough, fair-minded judges keeping the circus under control. Since we’re headlong into enticing seasons of The Voice and American Idol, the time is right to reflect upon the best judges in reality TV history – the ones who boast authority, smarts, sass, and fearsomeness. Oh, and some evil too!

In August 2011, Lambert announced that his second studio album, Trespassing, would be released on March 20, 2012. Anticipation for its release has been building and is considerable.

Trespassing – The title track was co-written with Grammy Award winning Pharrell Williams,[98] while the album’s lead single, “Better Than I Know Myself”, a collaboration with Dr. Luke and Claude Kelly, was released on December 20, 2011 to all digital retailers. His debut live performance of the single on January 17, 2012 on the The Tonight Show with Jay Leno received overwhelmingly positive reviews, focusing on Lambert’s soaring and impeccable vocals on this melodically challenging song, as well as his more stripped down and sophisticated look.

Wrecking Ball is as subtle as the title suggests. Listening to the majority of Bruce Springsteen’s seventeen studio albums, it is obvious he has never been one to duck in behind someone and poke his head out whenever the coast is clear. Springsteen, as he has done and will continue to do, marches right out and puts himself in the firing line. Perhaps to some people, an album so heavily influenced by global depression and political uncertainty could prove monotonous. Those people are wrong. He’s called The Boss for a reason.
The album begins with We Take Care of Our Own, a song immediately distinguishable as Classic Springsteen. A marching drum beat punches this patriotic sound, echoing the lines “Wherever this flag is flown/ we take care of our own”. Springsteen has always reached for those anthems that you can imagine festival crowds screaming back at him.

Hi Chris, how are you?
I'm cold.
Oh – whereabouts are you?
I'm in a hotel room in London … but it's one of those hotels where you turn on the heat and nothing but cold air comes out. But anyway, I'm moving around while I talk, how about that?
Life on the road can be tough …
It often happens. You go into hotels and have to have something fixed in the room. I have to start bringing my own screwdriver. But then, maybe it's the quality of the hotels I'm staying in …
Your latest album, Beyond the Sun, has you covering the greats who recorded at Sun Records studio (1). What made you want to go there?
When I was a kid my parents would play that music and I really took it to heart.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand was a series that I was ready to laugh at dismissively, calling it a TV version of the similarly stylised 2006 film, 300. However, when the series actually came out, it was surprisingly watchable. Once I was done leering at the series’ comical excesses of sex and violence, I found myself captivated by an well-developed story of intrigue, greed and betrayal.
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena is a prequel series to Blood and Sand and is available now on Blu-ray. Set in the same universe of bloodlust and hedonism, but without the titular character, this series revolves around the House of Batiatus and the school of gladiators trained within its grounds.
There are essentially two parallel plotlines in Gods of the Arena. One focuses on Quintus Batiatus (John Hannah) as he attempts to balance the House’s reputation with gaining favour from all the right people,...

It's Boot Camp day 2 for "The X Factor" - the Top 32 are revealed, plus each category is assigned a judge. Exciting stuff.
More group time:
The Chris Rene-Brennin Hunt group gets "What's Going On" by the late, great Marvin Gaye. Awesome song for these voices, I predict - and then they do. It's very good. Matthew Johnson is a great one we haven't really seen before. Chris Rene doesn't sound as good as he did on his audition song. The Country group gets "I Won't Let Go" and it's a great piece for every single member. Hannah Bethel is a stand out, as are Thomas Wells and Tim Cifers. They all do very well. The Emma Henry group (we've seen her on "Idol," I think) gets "Chasing Cars" and the guy who leads it off is not good. Hannah Jackson has an interesting voice, very torn on her. Emma is another weird one.

Honesty is the best policy when it comes to reality TV, says Simon Cowell — and that’s a rule he’s applying to Fox’s hotly anticipated singing competition The X Factor. “You’ve got to say what you think,” Cowell said in a conference call with television reporters this afternoon. “It doesn’t always make you comfortable when you watch it back [on TV], but it definitely makes the show more honest.”
That unflinching commitment to keeping it real even applies to airing what Cowell describes as a “childish meltdown” he had during a particularly frustrating string of callback auditions — a...

On a day that has seen a lot of painful (and painfully dull) rehashing of political angst against former Vice President Dick Cheney, pegged to his upcoming autobiography, Ed Schultz's Cheney panel managed to squeeze out an entertaining wrinkle or two. On Thursday night's The Ed Show, Ring of Fire host Mike Papantonio struggled to keep Cheney's villainy on par with Dubya's, while Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead was suitably disturbed by the idea of Cheney as Bush's binky.

Nashville, Tenn. — Not all pioneers know exactly where they're going, and that was definitely the case for Johnny Cash & The Tennessee Two.
Cash, guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant – the last surviving member of the group who passed away Sunday morning at age 83 in Jonesboro, Ark., after an aneurysm and stroke – changed the future of American music and popular culture with their distinct boom-chicka-boom beat.
Grant fell ill after rehearsing for a concert to raise funds for the restoration of Cash's boyhood home, said Cash's daughter, Rosanne Cash.
Grant always freely admitted the soon-to-be historic trio had no special insight as they shaped that universal beat – a sound that launched a million imitators with songs such as "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues, "Ring of Fire," "Big River" and "Cry Cry Cry."

With a column I wrote recently, I seem to have helped reignite a debate that enrages many geophysicists: Do quakes occur in clusters-and if so, what does Japan's portend for the U.S.? The answer remains far from clear.
Just as with any academic community, the world of geophysics is much divided. While a good number of scientists see as their central mission the need to be able to predict earthquakes, many utterly abhor the notion. Charles Richter (he of the Scale) was vehement: "I have a horror of predictions and predictors," he wrote in 1977. "Journalists and the general public rush to any suggestion of earthquake prediction like hogs toward a full trough."

The "American Idol" Season 10 Top 11 take the stage Wednesday night (March 23). The theme is Motown, which should prove interesting for country singers Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina.
But before this year's Top 11 get their Motown groove on, let's take a look back at some past Top 11 stand-outs. We've picked out the cream of the crop here, but let us know in the comments if you disagree with any of our choices (or if there's somebody we left out).
Also - which one was the best? Clay's "Somewhere Out There," Carrie's "Alone," Fantasia's "Always On My Mind," McPheever's "Come Rain or Come Shine," Daughtry's "I Walk the Line," Jordin's "I (Who Have Nothing," Archie's "Long and Winding Road," Cook's "Day Tripper," Glambert's "Ring of Fire," Lee's "The Letter" or Crystal's "Me and Bobby McGee." Vote below - honestly, we think it's pretty hard to choose.

Greetings New Music Mix Readers. You may have noticed I took a brief hiatus from my bi-weekly roundups. Well this past month I participated in a show on MTV that will be airing this summer. Check back on AfterElton.com once it airs as I’ll be recapping my experience and filling you all in on the inside gossip.
On February 28th, I had the chance to catch Lady Gaga and Scissor Sisters in Chicago at the United Center on Gaga’s second North American leg of her Monster Ball Tour. I must say that if you have the chance to go see her perform, take it. She is undoubtedly one of the best entertainers of our time.

Sometimes the message is more important than the song itself. That was Adam Lambert's creed as he performed an unplugged version of the song Aftermath on Fox's American Idol Thursday night. The glam-rocker stripped it down and delivered a very un-glam-like performance of the song, which was aimed at Lgbt troubled youth struggling with their identity and with the prejudices they face as a result of being different. It's a message that hits home with Lambert and ultimately inspired the song, which he co-wrote with friends. Idol fans were excited to see the Season 8 superstar return to the stage where he set a new bar for hopefuls with performances like Mad World, A Change Is Gonna Come, and the Johnny Cash classic Ring of Fire. And no-one has since descended those Idol stairs like Lambert, who sashayed his way down with the prowess of sexy-fied cat during the Nina Simone classic Feelin' Good.

Visual effects are crucial to the story, appeal, and success of many movies and TV shows. Many people don’t understand differences between Visual and Special effects. Visual Effects are designed and edited in Post-Production, and are created with the use of graphic design, modeling, and animation software. Special Effects, on the other hand, are made on set; things like explosions, car chases and so on.
Without talented and intelligent VFX professionals like Jerry Spivack, Co-Founder and Visual Effects Supervisor/Creative Director at La based 'Ring of Fire' studios, to carefully plan and choreograph this phase of a production, we couldn’t experience the full entertainment value in many of today’s movies Commercials and TV shows.
Iae: Could you please tell us where you’re from and what inspired you to pursue a career in entertainment?
Js: I grew up in Chicago (Il) and became interested in the television industry early on.

Disney pop princess Selena Gomez may not be as pure as she originally hoped to be. The teenage performer started wearing a purity ring back in 2008 as a symbol of her dedication to sexual abstinence. She asked her father to buy the ring for her because she claimed she was not going to have sex until marriage.
However, Selena has recently been seen without her purity ring, prompting many to speculate that perhaps she has changed her mind about losing her virginity. Selena’s been seen out with none other than Justin Bieber, and not in a professional capacity, either – word has it the two have been dating, so who knows where that purity ring has gone.

"Glee" doesn't really try to answer the huge religion question on its "Grilled Cheesus" episode, but it certainly does try to throw a lot of different ideas the viewers' way.
Spoiler alert -- don't keep reading if you haven't watched the episode yet.
In the episode, Kurt (Chris Colfer) is going through a tough time with his father in a coma, and when his friends try to comfort him with their spirituality, he explains that he rejects Christianity partly because of some ideas that don't jibe with who he is but also because he doesn't have faith.
"I think God is like Santa Claus for adults. Otherwise, God's kind of a jerk, isn't he?," he tells the show choir. "I mean, he makes me gay and then has his followers telling me it's something that I chose. As if someone would choose to be mocked every single day of their life.

"Who is this guy?" asked an usher. "Was he on television or something? It's strange. If you look at this audience, it's filled with people of all ages. I've never in all my life seen such a diverse age-range come out to see one man." Meet Adam Lambert, sir. If you had been among the few who showed up for the "On The Waterfront" festival in Rockford, Il last Saturday wondering what all the buzz was about, you would have been quickly enlightened by eager fans willing to explain the whole thing. Arriving hours before the show with their fully charged camera phones and trusty lawn chairs in tow, these folks were, are, and always will be loyal ambassadors to The Glam Nation. Those fortunate enough to get an assigned seat (they sold out faster than any other artist in history to perform at this annual festival) had a fairly good view of the stage.

As Adam Lambert makes his way across the country, he takes time out to actually see the fans.
During his Wichita, Kansas stop on his Glam Nation Tour Friday, July 16, he first did an impromptu meet and greet with the fans.
We love that he took the time to sign a few autographs. And get a load of those extensions! Are you fans?
Lambert played to a sold-out crowd of 2,000 at the Cotillion Ballroom.
Here's a short video of him covering "Ring of Fire," and his voice sounds pretty good even if the video quality isn't the best. For more of his set, see MJs Big Blog.

Season nine's "American Idol" theme weeks have veered from the Rolling Stones to John Lennon and Paul McCartney to Elvis Presley to ... Shania Twain?
Yes, Tuesday's (April 27) show has poured its annual country-music week through the funnel of Twain's songbook. Is this the weirdest theme in this history of the show? That's a question we're asking in a poll over on MTV's Newsroom blog. At this point, what we can say for sure is that, for better or worse, Crystal Bowersox and her band of merry "Idol"-ers will dig into Twain's catalog. How familiar were they with her discography? We confess we had to go back into the vaults to catch up with Twain's career since her 1993 self-titled debut album.

Normal 0 American Idol, it took nine seasons but the Simon fed snake is finally eating its own tail.
It started early on in Hollywood week with contestants like Paige Miles and Katie Stevens performing songs from past contestant's solo albums. Next, we had the Top 9 talking about each other in place of a mentor during Lennon/McCartney night. Finally, we have a former Idol mentoring current Idols on how to be an Idol.
By next season we are going to have an Idol hosting the show, judged by three former Idols, while singing Idol records. The horror!
On a positive note, Adam Lambert is probably the most talented and interesting contestant the show has ever yielded so having him whip these wannabes into shape is definitely not a bad thing.
Here is the wisdom he could pass to each contestant:
Aaron Kelly
Make him cool, ala Rizzo with Sandy in Grease.

The two best performances of the night book-ended the "American Idol" Season 9 Top 10 men -- Michael Lynche and Lee Dewyze.
The Top 10 men were 100% better than last week. Of course, that's like saying something is 100% better than being punched in the face.
Still, good for the guys -- they didn't get down-in-the-mouth after last week's harsh criticism. Instead, they came back with a vengeance and, well, it's better. It's still not great, but there is hope. So, in our order from best to worst, here are your Top 10 men:
No. 1 Michael Lynche
First of all, that shot of him arm-curling Aaron Kelly in his video package? Hilarious. Michael makes me think of, "Every morning at the mine you'd see him arrive, he stood 6'6 and weighed 245. Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip. And everybody knew you didn't give no lip to Big Mike."
Anyway. Michael went...

Hayley Tamaddon topped the scoreboard last week, but will Gary Lucy, Daniella Westbrook or Kieron Richardson catch up with her?
And on Hollywatch this week, Ms Willoughby is wearing what looks like a bodice with a dress tacked on. Very sexy. And Torvill and Dean give another effortlessly graceful opening to the show. Tonight’s guest judge – in case you care – is former newsreader Angela Rippon.
Scoreboard

In a recent interview with Zap2it, Kara DioGuardi mentioned the "Adam Lambert effect" on this year's "American Idol." We'd like to posit that this "effect" pre-dates Lambert by several seasons.
Adam Lambert turned Country Night on its head last year by performing a sitar-music version of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire." Here's a refresher:
Is changing a song like that really some kind of "Idol" break through by Adam Lambert? And does the "Adam Lambert effect" mean you can't cover somebody else's outside-the-box version of a well-known song? If so, it's certainly not the "Adam Lambert Effect." His sitar "Ring of Fire" is by Universal Hall Pass. Not a famous band, to be sure, but it's not like it was an Adam original.
So did this start happening seasons ago on "Idol?" We'd like to offer some counter arguments, in chronological order:
Fantasia Barrino's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" from season 3

Winter is upon us in full swing and though I personally can not wait until the warmer seasons the Winter of late 2010 can not get here fast enough. Why you ask? Well come the end of this year, Disney releases Tron Legacy, the long awaited sequel to their 1982 cult hit Tron. There's little buzz amongst the general movie public about this film, but just like the recent smash success Avatar, I'm sure Disney's marketing strategy involves revealing more about the sequel bit by bit. I'm pretty sure that by this summer's end, it will be a greatly anticipated movie event among audiences. For die-hards like me, there is a wealth of information and even back-story to be found about the film's plot. (See for yourself and visit Flynn Lives.com.) The official synopsis reads:Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father...

Last night's "American Idol" propelled Andrew Garcia to frontrunner status thanks to his soulful acoustic interpretation of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up." But it was Kara's comments comparing Garcia's show-stopping performance to Adam Lambert (and not Kris Allen) that has sparked a passionate debate amongst "Idol" fans.
Who deserved to get a shout-out from Kara last night: Adam Lambert or Kris Allen?
This afternoon I had a private chat with a close friend of mine, who believes Kara was in the right by referencing Adam, and I think our civilized discussion is worth sharing with other "Idol" fans.
Glambert696969: So, Jim, I read your "Idol" recap last night.
Jim: Oh yeah? Thanks!
Glambert696969: I don't understand why us Glamberts have such a bad rep for defending Adam tooth and nail when you and [EW.com's Michael] Slezak are just as defensive about Kris.
Jim: Was I being defensive though?
Glambert696969: Yes!

Looks like yet another non-fiction film is about to get a dramatic feature remake: Marshall Curry’s Racing Dreams was optioned for adaptation by DreamWorks earlier this week. The movie, which was produced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, follows three kids who compete in the World Karting Association’s National Championship, in the hopes of one day becoming Nascar drivers. The remake is being produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writers of Transformers and Star Trek. Does this mean the go karts will transform into giant robots? Hopefully. Strangely, a ton of documentaries have been optioned by Hollywood lately, including The King of Kong, Sherman’s March, Ring of Fire, Crazy Love, Planet B-Boy, Air Guitar Nation and Young@Heart. (Did I miss any?) The documentary fan in me says that these movies don’t need remakes, and that the original films could play just as well to a...
