The Sources Of Inspiration
boblipton28 June 2023
A girl visits a high school and comments on the positive school spirit that everyone seems to exhibit. Her date explains how the illness and subsequent death of a member of the basketball team inspired everyone. Or did it?

It's one of the shorts produced by the Centron Corporation, which specialized in industrial and educational films for many years. It's directed by Herk Harvey, now know for directing his one feature, CARNIVAL OF SOULS, which he did during a two-week summer vacation. When people asked him why he never directed another film, he would explain that he directed hundreds of them.

What About School Spirit? (1958)

** (out of 4)

A Lawrence High School students is complimented on how wonderful his school spirit is and the woman says she wishes her school was so committed to theirs. The high school student then talks about someone he knew who influenced his school spirit. Director Herk Harvey will always be remembered for directing CARNIVAL OF SOULS but he also made a lot of educational pictures and this here is one of them. For the most part this is just melodrama with some boring message thrown in about doing the right thing when you support your school. So, in other words, painting a building with your school name isn't the right thing to do. Instead, just show support and love and kindness. Blah. Yeah, the message gets beaten over the viewer's head but if you're a fan of these educational films then this one here isn't the worst that you're going to see. It's mildly entertaining in its own way but don't expect any camp value.
