Director Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem), screenwriter Dennis Paoli – who worked on the screenplays for the Stuart Gordon-directed H.P. Lovecraft adaptations Re-Animator, From Beyond, Castle Freak, Dagon, and Masters of Horror: Dreams in the Witch-House – and producer Barbara Crampton (who had acting roles in Re-Animator, From Beyond, and Castle Freak) recently teamed up to make a new Lovecraft adaptation called Suitable Flesh (read our review Here) in tribute to Gordon. The movie recently received a Blu-ray and DVD release (copies can be purchased at This Link) that includes such extras as audio commentary, featurettes, and bloopers – but if your taste is more old school than that, it’s also coming to VHS, courtesy of Broke Horror Fan and Witter Entertainment!

Faith is a powerful thing. There’s almost no limit to what can be accomplished when enough people share the same beliefs. However, this power can be easily misused, and a group of misguided believers can do a lot of damage during their search for enlightenment. That’s why it’s no surprise that there are so many scary movies about the dangers of cults.
From Rosemary’s Baby to Midsommar, filmmakers have been using these volatile groups to tell some incredibly chilling stories since the beginning of cinema, and that’s precisely why we’ve decided to compile a list highlighting six of the scariest cults in horror.
For the purposes of this list, we’ll be defining a “cult” as a fringe group of extreme believers bound by a shared (fictional) faith. And while we won’t be officially including it on the list due to a possible conflict of interests,...

Stuart Gordon was the master of cinematic H.P. Lovecraft adaptations. Sadly, he passed away in 2020, but his Lovecraft franchise lives on with Suitable Flesh (read our review Here), which comes from the team of director Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem), screenwriter Dennis Paoli – who worked on the screenplays for Gordon’s Lovecraft movies Re-Animator, From Beyond, Castle Freak, Dagon, and Masters of Horror: Dreams in the Witch-House – and producer Barbara Crampton (who was in Re-Animator, From Beyond, and Castle Freak). To say it’s been a strange, turbulent year might be a bit of an understatement. Historically, 2023 marks the year of the dual strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA, the first time in over 60 years that Hollywood writers and actors went on strike at the same time. While both fought for better working conditions and deservedly won, the work stoppage no doubt plays a large role in the theatrical slate both this year and at least into the next. Through it all, horror continues to thrive. Box office records were shattered and indie darlings and international gems continue to surprise audiences. Of course, it’s in the most turbulent times where horror thrives most; audiences turn to horror for catharsis or release from real world anxieties and fears.
That reflects in 2023’s horror offerings, which has given everything from unexpected lo-fi indie hits like Skinamarink and Screambox’s can’t-miss The Outwaters...

Last Friday, the apocalyptic supernatural Spanish horror film Everyone Will Burn was given a theatrical release in select locations by Drafthouse Films. Now the film has made its way to VOD (it’s available on iTunes at This Link), and to help you decide whether or not this is one you’d like to check out, we have the trailer embedded above.
David Hebrero, who has racked up many credits as a cinematographer and a gaffer, directed Everyone Will Burn from a screenplay he wrote with Javier Kiran. The story centers on María José, an outlier in her small Spanish town, who is grieving after her young son’s suicide. As she teeters on the brink of suicide herself, she encounters a mysterious young girl caked in dirt. It is quickly revealed that the girl has telekinetic powers and might be the harbinger of the apocalyptic prophecy that exists within town legend.

Monsters have been representing primal fears since time immemorial, and the best of them are capable of adapting to evolving societal fears. From werewolves occasionally becoming metaphors for puberty to zombies going from supernatural slaves to viral consumerism, there’s plenty of multifaceted creatures to choose from. That’s why it’s fitting that the King of the Monsters himself has seen so many wildly different variations over the years.

“Joe Lynch is no Stuart Gordon!” That’s what many horror fans (yours truly included) have been shouting to the heavens since it was announced that the Wrong Turn 2: Dead End (2007) and Mayhem (2017) director was helming the late master of horror and his frequent collaborator Dennis Paoli’s long-unproduced adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s 1933 short story, The Thing On the Doorstep. Famous for their work together on Re-Animator, From Beyond, Castle Freak, and Dagon, finding a suitable fit to bring the project to the screen after decades of false starts and the death of the maestro would seem a fool’s errand, but Barbara Crampton, the actor most associated with Gordon’s body of work, was up to the task. She hand-picked Lynch, and right she was to do so, because, wonder of wonders Suitable Flesh is less suitable than it is superlative: a playful, gleefully horny Lovecraftian thriller...

Seven years ago, Lionsgate Home Entertainment revived the defunct Vestron Video label for the Vestron Video Collector’s Series of Blu-ray releases, and over the years that series has turned out to be pretty impressive. The list of Vestron Blu-rays includes Chopping Mall, Blood Diner, the Waxwork movies, Return of the Living Dead ///, The Gate, the Wishmaster films, the Warlock films, Slaughter High, Class of 1999, Beyond Re-Animator, Dagon, Maximum Overdrive, Shivers, Little Monsters, The Wraith, Dementia 13, Steel Dawn, Candyman: Day of the Dead, Dream a Little Dream, Extreme Prejudice, Earth Girls Are Easy, the Dentist movies, the Silent Night, Deadly Night sequels, and more. It’s July, so you know what that means… Fantasia International Film Festival time! Kicking off our Summer of film festival coverage, Fantasia is Always packed with a vast variety of films, from action to horror, drama to comedy, the festival covers the gamut of genres and offers films that [I think] no other festival does. With that in mind, here are five of my “must-see” picks from this year’s line-up.
Blackout – Genre veteran Larry Fessenden goes back behind the camera for another genre film following the likes of Wendigo, The Last Winter and Beneath. This time around Fessenden brings us the tale of a painter (Alex Hurt) who, convinced he is a werewolf, creates chaos in a small town at each full moon. Suitable Flesh – Director Joe Lynch returns with his first feature after a 4-year absence to helm Suitable Flesh, which not only stars Scream Queen Barbara Crampton but comes from writer Dennis Paoli,...

The spirit of Stuart Gordon is alive and well in Joe Lynch’s Suitable Flesh. The adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Thing on the Doorstep,” written by Dennis Paoli (Re-Animator, From Beyond, Dagon), and produced by Brian Yuzna and Barbara Crampton, seamlessly inserts itself into Gordon’s Lovecraftian cinematic world from its opening scene set in a hospital that’s instantly evocative of Re-Animator. Lynch captures the humorous, oft-sexy tone of Gordon’s ‘80s/’90s Lovecraftian horror output while putting his own stamp on it through keen instincts and modern storytelling.

Founded in 1953, bought by Julio Fernández in 1987 and now run by his brother Carlos Fernandez and daughter Laura Fernández, Filmax is one of its biggest true-blue independent studios in Spain, involved in film and TV production, and movie distribution, international film and TV sales and exhibition.
How it got there is another question. “At Filmax, we’ve always bet on creative talent. In Spain, there’s always been creative talents that have revolutionized its sector: Architects, artists and designers,” says Laura Fernández, a Filmax executive producer. “Filmax has known how to find talent in all parts of film production: Composers, screenwriters, DPs, casting, VFX and directors.”
Jaume Balagueró’s “Nameless” gave Filmax its first experience of fulsome international pre-sales at 1999’s Mifed, helping to usher in a golden age of Spanish auteur genre that resonates to this day.

Three years have gone by since director Stuart Gordon passed away at the age of 72… but he left one more piece of entertainment for us to enjoy. While he’d started his professional career as a theater director, Gordon’s first love was cinema, and in 1985 he shocked the world with his wickedly witty debut feature Re-Animator. After The Blair Witch Project came along in 1999, it feels like the independent horror boom of the 2000s was almost a direct result of that film’s success. Throughout this decade, we saw so many writers, directors, and other industry creatives get the opportunity to establish themselves and chart their course in Hollywood, and so many of those folks are still continuing to have a huge impact on what’s going on in the genre world these days as well.
The start of the new millennium proved to be an interesting time for horror, but especially indie horror. So many may not realize it, but American Psycho was initially an indie project that went through years and years of development before Lionsgate picked up the rights to Bret Easton Ellis’ book and moved forward on the project with Mary Harron at the helm. [Note: With the film out digitally in the UK from Monday, March 15th, here’s a reposting of our review of Sacrifice from its screening last year at Frightfest]

With Lovecraft Country finishing its acclaimed first season, you may be looking to fill that new gap in your viewing schedule with more content based on or inspired by the works of the enigmatic author from Providence, Rhode Island.
Let’s get one thing clear upfront: Howard Phillips Lovecraft was very much a product of his time and upbringing, and his views on race, ethnicity, and class — while commonplace for where and when he lived — were truly noxious, an aspect of his legacy that Lovecraft Country addresses in its own themes. But it’s also clear that Lovecraft was arguably the most influential horror writer of the 20th century, with a reach that extends to this day.
While there have been a number of movies based directly on stories by Lovecraft — including titles like Die, Monster, Die! (1965), The Dunwich Horror (1970), Re-Animator (1985) and its sequels, From Beyond (1986), Dagon (2001), The Whisperer in Darkness...

Indescribable shapes both alive and otherwise were mixed in disgusting disarray, and close to every known thing were whole worlds of alien, unknown entities. It likewise seemed that all the known things entered into the composition of other unknown things, and vice versa. Foremost among the living objects were great inky, jellyfish monstrosities which flabbily quivered in harmony with the vibrations from the machine.
-H.P. Lovecraft, “From Beyond”
The original 1934 H.P. Lovecraft short story “From Beyond” details the twisted trans-dimensional experiments of one Dr. Crawford Tillinghast, who creates a machine that allows gratuitously excessive pineal gland enhancement. This in itself yields a sensory awakening, wherein Tillinghast and his unnamed best friend (our narrator) find themselves suddenly able to see the aforementioned terrifying translucent creatures from beyond the realms of traditional human perception. Tillinghast tries to set the monstrosities upon his friend, that friend destroys the machine, and Tillinghast...

Is this doctor a healer? Or an instigator of nightmares? "I just want to help," he says in the new trailer for The Black Gloves. Judging by the evidence in every other moment in the trailer itself, starting with the very first image of a doll with a shadow creature creeping up in the background, that may not be possible. Written by Sarah Daly and directed by Lawrie Brewster, the film features an ensemble cast, including Jamie Scott Gordon (Bonejangles 2), Macarena Gómez, and Alexandra Hulme (Girls). Our founder and editor Todd Brown wrote about the crowdfunding project back in 2017. As Todd wrote: "Brewster has been carving out a healthy niche for himself with his distinctive approach to horror film," which...

IndieWire asked Larry Fessenden, actor/producer/filmmaker and founder of indie production outfit Glass Eye Pix to remember fellow filmmaker and long-time playwright Stuart Gordon, best known for his trademark horror offerings “Re-Animator,” “Dagon,” and “From Beyond.” On Tuesday, Gordon died at at age 72.
Like many horror fans of my generation, I saw “Re-Animator” in the theater on the big screen. It was a revelation, so bold and sassy and that Barbara Crampton, whew! The practical effects had such exuberance (talking severed head in a medical tray anyone?) you could sense his history in experimental theater by the way he staged gore gags. “Re-Animator” put filmmaker Stuart Gordon squarely in the company of iconic horror auteurs John Carpenter and George Romero, and it began his life-long affinity for H.P. Lovecraft adaptations. His follow-up film was another Lovecraft story, “From Beyond” and it did not disappoint. Gordon would go on to...

I'm absolutely crushed by the news that Stuart Gordon has passed away. According to multiple sources (including Variety), Gordon's family confirmed that the filmmaker passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 72. Probably best known for Re-Animator, he also directed From Beyond, Dagon, Castle Freak and much more, including the criminally under-seen Dolls.
Aside from directing, he also co-wrote Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, and wrote Body Snatchers, The Dentist, and more. And on top of his film and TV work, he was also very active in theater productions, having directed Nevermore…An Evening with Edgar Allen Poe, Re-Animator: The Musical, and Taste.
We were very fortunate to team up The Stanley Film Festival back in 2015 for a 30th anniversary screening of Re-Animator, with Stuart Gordon as the guest of honor. My wife's favorite horror movies are Re-Animator and From Beyond, and I was especially excited for her to meet him.

Stuart Gordon — the horror-film director who helmed the cult classic Re-Animator and co-created the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise — has died at the age of 72.
Gordon’s wife Carolyn Purdy-Gordon confirmed her husband’s death to Variety. No cause of death was revealed.
Over a film career that spanned three decades, Gordon was best known for his ability to harness the weirdness of H.P. Lovecraft’s works and translate them to the big screen: In addition to 1985’s Re-Animator, a modern update of Lovecraft’s 1922 novella, Gordon also helmed From Beyond,...

Review by H.P Lovecraft super-fan Lee Manuel.
Most games based on H.P Lovecraft concentrate mainly on Cthulhu, casting you, the player, as the plucky hero attempting to save the world from unnameable cosmic horrors and cults, while gamely trying to hold on to your sanity. Sea Salt is a different beast for a couple of reasons. Number one, it’s about ancient sea god Dagon, and two, for once you are definitely not the good guy – you play as Dagon himself, happily slaughtering the townsfolk to feed your appetites.
You see, the local archbishop has always been pretty forthcoming with the old human sacrifice to keep you placated, quite coincidentally amassing piles of cash along the way. But when the time comes for him to sacrifice himself, he’s a lot less keen, so you understandably get a little miffed. However, the wrath of Dagon doesn’t manifest as...

No filmmaker has been more successful at bringing the work of H.P. Lovecraft to the screen than Stuart Gordon, and perhaps no Stuart Gordon film is more successful at adapting Lovecraft than 2001’s Dagon. It may not be as focused and entertaining as Re-Animator, the first Lovecraft adaptation from Gordon and screenwriter Dennis Paoli, nor is it as wild and colorfully gory as their second, From Beyond, but Dagon gets at the spirit of Lovecraft more faithfully than their more popular and better-known efforts. It may just be the most Lovecraftian movie ever made.
Adapted from Lovecraft’s 1931 novella The Shadow Over Innsmouth, Dagon casts Ezra Godden as Paul, a stockbroker vacationing in Spain with his girlfriend (Birgit Bofarull) and some friends, when a storm hits and destroys their boat. Paul and his girlfriend are brought to a small fishing village called Imboca, and, while searching for the rest of their missing party,...

When last we left this Masters of Horror rewatch, I was lamenting the fact that a number of the episodes in the Showtime anthology series don’t feel like they really represent their namesake filmmakers accurately. The series premiere, “Incident On and Off a Mountain Road” is a great hour of television and one of my favorite episodes of the series while not really feeling like a Don Coscarelli film. Based on my memory of the show, I thought this was a sound thesis and one I would see proven out over the course of this rewatch. Then along comes “Dreams in the Witch House”—only the second episode of Masters of Horror —to blow my whole theory out of the water. This is a Stuart Gordon-directed episode that feels very much like a Stuart Gordon film.

Director Lawrie Brewster and writer Sarah Daly are back with Gothic noir The Black Gloves, a 1940s-set chiller featuring the Owlman, the iconic villain and viral sensation from their acclaimed debut feature Lord of Tears.
The Black Gloves tells the story of a psychologist obsessed with the disappearance of his young patient, and the menacing owl-headed figure that plagued her nightmares. His investigations lead him to a reclusive ballerina who, just like his patient, is convinced that she is about to die at the hands of this disturbing entity. In the bleak Scottish highlands, Finn counsels his new patient, under the watchful eye of her sinister ballet teacher. He soon finds himself entangled in a ballet of paranoia, dark agendas and a maze of deadly twists and turns, as the legend of the Owlman becomes a terrifying reality.
