Since its first entry “The Man Trap” aired on Sept. 8 1966, Star Trek has released almost 900 episodes and 13 feature films. And yet, none of those TV episodes or movie releases have delved into that most popular of genres, the Christmas story.
Anyone who knows about the production of The Original Series can understand the reason for that omission. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry placed religion alongside racism and capitalism as divisive tendencies from which humanity evolves. So of course a holiday based on Christianity and/or shopping would fade away as humans looked toward the stars.
But as is often the case, the actual execution of Star Trek differs wildly from Roddenberry’s intentions. Even though the franchise never openly embraces Christmas, some aspects of the holiday do catch up with it, no matter how far it boldly goes.

Around the holidays, nothing is better than kicking back with your family and laughing until your stomach hurts. Holiday Cheer is real. With the stress of Christmas shopping, it can be hard to remember why we do it all. One surefire way is to put on a fun comedy and let yourself be drawn into the spirit of the season. To enjoy your holiday to the maximum, let’s go over the best Christmas comedies.
The Night Before (2015)
This fun holiday film centers on three friends with an annual tradition of getting together on Christmas Eve and spending the night getting into as much debauchery as possible. Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Anthony Mackie star as the three friends. When they realize that their adult lives are making it harder and harder to keep the tradition going, they decide to make this year’s reunion the best one they have ever had.

Quick, name a superhero with a more cynical perspective than Batman. Okay, sure there’s Spawn, but I meant in mainstream comics. Yeah, Punisher, but how about in DC Comics? Sure, there’s John Constantine. But I mean a character less suitable for Christmas stories. What’s that you say? Constantine once crushed the bones of St. Nicolas and snorted them into a powder? And Lobo murdered Santa?
Okay, the point is that Batman doesn’t seem like the type of guy who would make for a good Christmas story. Spider-Man can deliver presents while swinging across New York City and Superman has carried Santa’s slay more than once, but Mr. Vengeance doesn’t even like leaving Gotham. Why would he bother with the North Pole?
And yet, Batman has been at the center of several Christmas stories over the year, and some of them are pretty great. Here...

In 1843, London publishers Chapman & Hall released A Christmas Carol. Written by Charles Dickens and illustrated by John Leech, it was inspired in part by Dickens’s anger at inequality in his country, especially as it affected children. Despite its aversion to the upper classes, A Christmas Carol was an immediate hit among readers and critics. Given the book’s popularity, it’s no surprise that movie makers have picked up on the story many times. Between its clear redemption arc and ghostly premise, the story has everything that a good movie needs.
Still, not every adaptation of A Christmas Carol is created equal. So if you’re looking for the best of the worst man in film and literature, check out these ten great movies. And if you don’t like my picks, well, bah humbug I say.

Muppet fans rejoice! After 30 years of waiting, "The Muppet Christmas Carol" will finally be released in its full, uncut glory.
Jeffrey Katzenberg, the Quibi mastermind who once ran Disney, infamously cut a pivotal number from the adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic that was perhaps thought lost to time. Katzenberg was not a fan of ballads, particularly in family entertainment, and thought them too boring for the kiddos. He even came close to cutting "Part of Your World" from "The Little Mermaid" before it premiered. Unfortunately, he succeeded in his pruning with "The Muppet Christmas Carol."
However, during the D23 Expo panel celebrating the film, it was announced that "When Love Is Gone" will be reinstated to the film an available for your holiday viewing pleasure on Disney+ on December 11, 2022 -- exactly 30 years after the film's initial theatrical release

Next to an armchair in Patrick Stewart’s living room in Brooklyn sits a small table, and on it a black three-ring binder. The 79-year-old actor leans in and clasps his hands when recounting his upbringing in the North of England. He stands and paces when a subject such as Brexit or Donald Trump aggravates him. All the while, he touches the binder over and over again — tapping it, thumbing through it, waving it around.
Inside is the script for Stewart’s one-man stage adaptation of “A Christmas Carol,” which he began performing three decades ago, around the same time he originated the role of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” It’s early December, and next week Stewart, for the first time in 16 years, will once again perform “A Christmas Carol” — in which he portrays more than 30 characters. The run: just two nights at a 99-seat theater on 54th Street.

Joker. You remember that supervillain origin story? Yeah, it was out in theaters pretty recently. The one with that scary dude from Gladiator. Not Russell Crowe. The other guy. Yeah, you remember it.
What was it about, though? Can you remember that? If you’ve forgotten, haven’t seen the film, or can’t be bothered to reach any conclusions for yourself and want to posit someone else’s view as your own, then I have the article for you. No, I haven’t had a bad day. This is sunny-side up cynicism.
Joker director Todd Phillips is certainly well placed to offer his take on what this latest comic book escapade was about. After all, he did make the thing. Now, with the film’s home video release, Phillips has provided a director’s commentary which sheds new light on a theme he thinks audiences may have missed, and...

Ebenezer Scrooge is a character whose iconic status is earned through his simplicity. Through endless retellings of Dickens’s novella “A Christmas Carol,” his nature and his story have the starchy plainness not to warp: Scrooge loves money over people, and has entirely lost his way as regards human relationships. Give or take a lost love, and that’s more or less it — a fellow whose cruelty lacks much adornment, all the better to bring him relatively quickly to a life-changing epiphany and 180-degree personality flip.
Which makes it all the more confusing that FX’s new “Christmas Carol” adaptation, written by Steven Knight (of TV’s “Peaky Blinders” and “Taboo”) digs for the impish, perverse antihero within a character whose needs and wants could, previously, have been written on a matchstick. As played by Guy Pearce, Scrooge is less misanthrope than outright sociopath, using his material advantage over others to,...

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is dropping the first in a series of Charles Dickens adaptations this Christmas with his reimagining of A Christmas Carol for FX and BBC One.
Knight is yet to decide on what Dickens story he will tackle next for Ridley Scott’s Scott Free London and Tom Hardy’s Hardy Son & Baker, but he offered some insight on his thinking at the premiere of A Christmas Carol last week.
The writer was asked during a Q+A following the screening what we can expect next from his Dickens box-set, and he suggested he might be considering a story that could be told over a longer number of episodes.
“With the advent of what’s happening in television, where you get eight hours of a returning series, it means now you’ve got the keys now to the door of the library,” Knight said.

Well, that was fast: Director Ivo van Hove’s West Side Story joined Broadway’s Million Dollar Club after only six previews, grossing $1,254,440 in its first week of performances.
The musical revival, with all-new choreography by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, filled all seats at the Broadway Theatre for the week ending December 15, with a hefty $120 average ticket price pushing box office receipts to 97% of the production’s potential.
The strong showing chipped in to keep total Broadway box office of $38,869,141 about even with the previous week, despite a roster of 34 productions that’s one fewer than the week before. Total attendance was 302,872, about 2% more than the previous week.
West Side Story, featuring a record-setting cast of 32 Broadway first-timers, certainly is one of the most anticipated shows of the season, stoked by van Hove’s reputation, the beloved score and an intriguing New York TV ad campaign that preceded the show by months.

The British actor reflects on a year in which he was ‘everywhere’, from gritty TV drama The Virtues to Martin Scorsese’s starry gangster epic
Merseyside-born Stephen Graham, 46, discovered acting aged eight, before joining Liverpool’s Everyman youth theatre in his teens. His breakthrough role was his Bafta-nominated performance as skinhead Combo in Shane Meadows’s This Is England. His film credits include Snatch, Gangs of New York and the Pirates of the Caribbean series. He also played Al Capone in HBO drama Boardwalk Empire. This year, he’s starred in The Virtues, Line of Duty, Rocketman and The Irishman. He now plays Jacob Marley in the BBC’s new adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

It’s that time of year again, when screens big and small rouse even the stoniest of hearts with their festive re-telling of Charles Dickens’ immortal tale A Christmas Carol. We were at a splendidly seasonal Picturehouse Central last night for the special screening of the latest BBC version, which stars Guy Pearce as Ebenezer Scrooge and Joe Alwyn as Bob Cratchit. A sterling cast abounds, and includes Stephen Graham, Andy Serkis, Vinette Robinson, Jason Flemyng, Tiarna Williams, Lenny Rush, Delroy Atkinson, and Billy Barratt. The adaptation is by Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight and directed by Nick Murphy.
Colin Hart and Scott Davis were on the red carpet asking the questions.

A new trailer for the latest adaptation of A Christmas Carol has been released today. The FX miniseries is being exec produced by Tom Hardy, who will also appear in a “pivotal” but undisclosed role.
The story of A Christmas Carol, as if you didn’t know, follows Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who despises Christmas and everyone and everything associated with it, whereupon he’s visited by three ghosts who highlight to him the error of his ways with the intention of convincing him to change them. The story is so ingrained in the public consciousness that even those who have never actually read Charles Dickens’ book will be well aware of its key aspects through the countless direct adaptations, re-imaginings, references and parodies to have been made out of it over the years.
Most versions of the story ultimately play it as an uplifting tale of transformation, where...

Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight is tackling a series of Charles Dickens TV adaptations, starting with A Christmas Carol, for the BBC and FX.
A Christmas Carol is coming to FX and the BBC as a three-part miniseries. While that might not initially sound like the most groundbreaking news, seeing as the original 1843 novella by Charles Dickens has been adapted countless times in every conceivable medium, there’s a (non-Oliver) twist here. This version will be brought to you by the creator of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight.
As we first learned back in November 2017, the BBC is teaming with Knight to adapt a slate of Dickens miniseries, starting with this year’s kickoff, A Christmas Carol, which will star Guy Pearce as Ebenezer Scrooge, the bah-humbugging holiday-hating protagonist who famously undergoes time-travelling therapy, courtesy of three spirits. Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi starred in four Doctor Who Christmas specials each. We revisit Steven Moffat's festive scripts...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Steven Moffat’s first Christmas-y contribution to Doctor Who comes near the end of his second episode, The Doctor Dances, when Rose Tyler compares a jolly Doctor to Santa Claus. “Who says I’m not, red bicycle when you were 12?” comes the cheeky reply.
Comparisons between the Doctor and Father Christmas go all the way back to Moffat’s Comic Relief sketch The Curse Of Fatal Death and continue all the way throughout his tenure as head writer and executive producer, particularly in his seasonal specials. Having inherited the tradition, he upheld it very well.
Like Russell T. Davies before him, Moffat didn’t treat the Christmas special as a trifle or a passing fancy, but as a proper episode of Doctor Who.

As far as I know All The Creatures Were Stirring is the second ever Christmas horror anthology movie, with the first being the highly entertaining A Christmas Horror Story.
This one has five segments and one encompassing segment which begins and ends the film as well as linking each other segment. In this we see a man and woman who are kind of on a date at a local theatre. They meet outside and once inside are introduced to a couple of strange characters until they are eventually seated to watch the show. The first part of the show then leads into the opening segment The Stockings Are Hung.

One of cinema's great debates has become as much of a Christmas tradition as putting up the stockings: Is Die Hard a Christmas film?

Ever been alone on Christmas Eve? Christmas Day? Ever felt the loss of someone you love so badly you don’t think you can ever go forward with your life? Ever been at the end of your rope and considering something really drastic?
I can’t imagine anyone living who hasn’t been there at some time in their lives. As part of my post duty orders here at We Are Movie Geeks one of my tasks to shine a light on movies that never quite found an audience. Independent, foreign, low budget, direct to video, under the radar films that deserve a wider audience.
And, it being the Christmas season I personally am always looking for something new for the holidays. How many times can you watch Christmas Story? National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation? It’s A Wonderful Life or Christmas Carol? Actually quite a lot apparently, those are all great movies.

When a Boston University professor set out to trace the origins of “Jingle Bells,” she had no idea that she would discover the song’s racist origins – or cause an internet controversy.
Theater professor Kyna Hamill set out to trace if Medford, Massachusetts, or Savannah, Georgia, was the Christmas carol’s birthplace, as both used as their claim to fame. This week’s question: What are your winter holiday season viewing habits (that are not for work)? Do you have traditional go-to shows or movies? Are you looking forward to anything in particular?

As I have written in the past, I’m not the kind of critic who loves holiday specials. Too often, they’re too hokey, too commercial, too weird (yes, Bill Murray, I still don’t get “A Very Murray Christmas”) or, in the case of countless Hallmark Channel movies, way too white. But I do have a few holiday media traditions, starting with my Spotify Holiday Tunes playlist, which gets fired up as...

Warning: This post contains spoilers from Friday’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend fall finale.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s Paula went home for the holidays this week, and got a new Christmas carol stuck in our heads. (Just be careful who you sing it around.)
Friday’s fall finale saw Paula head to her hometown of Buffalo to take care of her ailing (and estranged) father. But after Rebecca volunteered to keep an eye on her dad, Paula was free to reconnect with her own Josh Chan: high-school boyfriend Jeff. (She apparently got a very good look at him back then, too, as...

It’s only December 2 and we have two more episodes after this before Christmas, but this week’s “Saturday Night Live” still opened with a “Christmas Carol” homage featuring Alec Baldwin. Despite seeming to jump the gun a little bit, seasonally, it’s one of the more incisive cold opens in a little while, pounding hard at Donald Trump’s most recent string of missteps.
Afterwards, though, it was an episode devoted to having fun with a fresh face who proved game for all sorts of wackily colored wigs and character moments. If it weren’t for her opening monologue and the fact that U2 was the musical guest, you’d hardly know she was Irish.

To entice Goldie Hawn back to the big screen -- for her first film in 15 years -- it took a special script (Snatched), a special co-star (Amy Schumer) and a special director: Jonathan Levine, whose past work includes the cancer dramedy, 50/50, and the stoner Christmas carol, The Night Before. In his latest, Levine is tackling mother-daughter bonding (and snatchin') and Et phoned the director to discuss the road to bringing Hawn out of semi-retirement, doing improv with Schumer and the movie he would like to direct with Jennifer Lawrence.

In just a few weeks, Alec Baldwin will return to Saturday Night Live to host for the 17th time, though he’s made waves this season with his ripe parody of Donald Trump, another broad-shouldered New Yorker who also doesn’t mince words.
Every time SNL’s host with the most drops in, the guy’s a total pro. The thing that makes the Baldwin, 58, effect reliably funny isn’t just his self-assured stature: he’s an experimental team player, and everyone around him is funnier for it.

Think Christmas TV has always been warm and fluffy? Think again, as we revisit some disturbing vintage festive specials...
The festive season holds long-held ties to the macabre. From the classic novels of Charles Dickens to the melancholy of the Christmas carol canon, Christmas has always harboured a darker side, lurking beyond the tinsel and mince pies. That role has extended to festive television: for every smiles-and-silliness sitcom special, there’s a programme with an altogether more disturbing spin on the season – be that a dramatic Christmas episode imbued with fear and bloodshed, or a family classic whose ostensibly wholesome charms look questionable in retrospect.

It's near impossible to make a movie with no redeeming features – but damned if Collateral Beauty doesn't hits the zero-stars jackpot. The unholy mess that director David Frankel and screenwriter Allan Loeb have unleashed for the holidays strands an all-star cast – including Will Smith, Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, Edward Norton and Keira Knightley – on a sinking ship that churns the waters from absurd to zombified with frequent stops at pretentious.

Christmastime is here. Presumably you already have chestnuts roasting on an open fire, a turkey and some mistletoe, and your first screaming argument about who’s cooking for who and where. ’Tis the season for such timeless traditions, and along with a collective craving for manifestly ill-judged food combinations and a moratorium on our disapproval of comedy knitwear, classic Christmas movies are now a vital part of the great yuletide experience.
But what precisely is a classic Christmas movie? Timeless vintage offerings like Holiday Inn and Miracle on 34th Street are stuffed from titles to credits with all things Christmassy, yet you’ll also find films like Casablanca and The Great Escape on many festive film lists, which have nothing more to do with Christmas than Cannibal Holocaust.
Even the single greatest ‘Christmas Movie’ of all time, It’s a Wonderful Life has a pretty tenuous connection with the Holiday Season,...

Caroling is an integral part of the Christmas season, but it is also a bit old and stodgy, and many young people have no interested in that particular time-honored tradition. Who better, then, to re-imagine the Christmas carol than one of the hippest creators on the Internet? YouTube star Caspar Lee teamed up with retailer Tk Maxx (the UK equivalent to Tj Maxx) for a new rendition of “Deck The Halls” that has some youthful energy to it.
Lee, along with a group of choir members, performed his version of “Deck The Halls” at London’s King’s Cross station. Musically, the reworked classic features an Edm influence and a beat-boxed backing track. Its lyrics, which Lee wrote under the tutelage of Welsh carol legend Aled Jones, reference tweeting, holiday sweaters, and snowballs -- all the things the kiddies enjoy during this time of the year.

Cheryl and Liam Payne are still going strong! The couple were all smiles when they attended a Christmas carol concert in London on Tuesday. Dressed in a gray sweater dress and black coat, Cheryl stayed close to Liam as they made their way back to their car. The last time we saw these two out together was at the Chopard Trophy Ceremony during the Cannes Film Festival back in May, shortly after the two made their red carpet debut as a couple at Eva Longoria's Global Gift Gala in Paris. Although the pair have been keeping a low profile, Liam recently grabbed headlines after he posted a sexy shirtless photo of himself on Instagram over the Thanksgiving holiday, and all we can say is that Cheryl is one lucky woman. For those with ears to hear, 2003’s “Bad Santa” was a wicked little Christmas carol. From idiosyncratic filmmaker Terry Zwigoff (“Ghost World”) and writing team Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (“I Love You Phillip Morris”), the Billy Bob Thornton heist comedy ignored the usual Ebenezer Scrooge-style stations of the cross to lesson-laden redemption and that journey’s attendant heartwarmth. Its profane insults and defiant refusal of cheer were a cold, astringent slap. And while hardly inventing irreverence for the holiday, the film showed up to win as though no one told it that hating Christmas wasn’t actually a competitive sport.

Losing a loved one is a tragedy and sometimes the grief that overcomes a person is so intense that they don’t know how to move forward. In David Frankel’s latest drama “Collateral Beauty,” Will Smith experiences those feelings when he portrays Howard, a successful businessman who has slipped into a depression after the death of his child and doesn’t know how to handle the situation.
The film follows him as his friends, portrayed by Kate Winslet, Micheal Peña and Edward Norton, devise a drastic plan to force him to confront his grief, until something unexpected happens. In a sort of “It’s A Wonderful Life”/“Christmas Carol” twist, Howard, who writes letters to various objects and themes, is visited by three special “people”: Death (Helen Mirren), Love (Keira Knightley) and Time (Jacob Latimore). Together these forces try and show Howard that life is worth living.

Will Smith may have given a strong performance in Suicide Squad, and was probably one of the few bright spots in what was an otherwise mediocre film, but it’s Collateral Beauty that has the actor making his best bid for Oscar gold this year.
The star-studded drama comes to us from director David Frankel and certainly looks like it’s going to be turning heads come awards season, as it follows Smith’s ad man who “begins a downward spiral after a tragic event but recovers in an unusual way.” It’s got all the makings of an Oscar favorite, backed by a supporting cast that boasts names like Edward Norton, Keira Knightley, Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, Michael Pena, Naomi Harris and more.
It’s a roster of talent sure to make anyone drool at the mouth, and though an all-star cast doesn’t always equate to a stellar film,...

When asked to adequately sum up Collateral Beauty in a single sentence, director David Frankel (Dear Diary, The Devil Wears Prada) referred to his starry Oscar contender as a “screwball drama.” Upon viewing last month’s poignant first teaser, it’s not too difficult to see why. Two months out from release and we now have the first theatrical poster to pour over, teasing the ways in which we are all connected.
So, what’s the pitch? Well, Frankel’s picture places Will Smith in the shoes of Howard Inlet, a high-flying New York advertising executive circling the jaws of depression following the sudden death of his young daughter. Crushed, Howard comes dangerously close to losing the will to live, retreating into grief as his home and work life spiral out of control.
