- Peter is asked to protect Barney Winkler, a German academic whose book on the Cold war has put him in danger from former Stasi members. Winkler is seen in conversation with an ex-associate Leon Falke, who is murdered, Winkler disappearing soon after, his abandoned car dumped in the sea. Andy is holidaying in Scarborough where he meets old flame Florence Stockton, a much-married lady. Several of Florence's ex-husbands turn up mysteriously dead in Yorkshire. Andy is called back to look into the German's disappearance. Florence also knew Winkler. Is she the link to the murders or is it, as Andy suspects, cloak and dagger - or even professional jealousy in the groves of Academe?—don @ minifie-1
- Shortly after Peter meets history professor Barney Winkler, whose book on Cold war Germany arouses dangerous interest from former Stasi agents, his German guest and ex-associate Leon Falke is found fatally stabbed in his university office, possibly mistaken at night for Winkler, who soon disappears, his car being dumped in the sea. Dalziel must return from his romantic weekend in a fancy Scarborough hotel, dining and cavorting with old flame Florence Stockton, an incorrigible liar, greedy seducer and sort of a black widow, who also knew Winkler better then she admits in their Vienna days, and plays dangerous games, also involving a violent accomplice.—KGF Vissers
