Bond deserved better than this garbage
lor_10 August 2010
DEVIL'S LITTLE ACRE is a complete mess of a movie. Deficient in every respect, naturally it got praised to the skies by the moron who shills on the back of the DVD-R box for Something Weird, which issued it on Volume 35 of its Dragon Art Theatre series. Contrary to XXX expectations, it is strictly softcore, with camera angles and the thesps carefully avoiding any explicit sex.

Sound is completely muffled, rendering the ad lib dialog unintelligible; most exterior scenes are completely washed out making viewing impossible, and there is an overall sloppiness which even bona fide hacks are never guilty of delivering. This falls in the bottom one percentile of crap.

Cretinous guys sit around shooting the breeze in overlapping dialog that might have given Robert Altman a hard-on but made me anxious. Anxious for some entertainment. That is delivered when the guys order up girls from the handy nearby Ozark Maid Service, where luscious and flat-chested at this time Rene Bond works. The first girl sent over is immediately gang-raped by the boys, setting the "light" tone desired by the morons who made this film.

It's more of the same, in very repetitious setups for nearly an hour. Climax is when our horny protagonists decide marriage is the only answer, cueing a ridiculous nude tableau of 3 couples having intercourse in varied positions while a preacher stands there. This dumb payoff is stretched out ad infinitum.

Cornpone bluegrass music comes onto the soundtrack occasionally but many of the sex scenes are just silent. Haphazard is the best description for this rickety excuse for a time-killer. Lead cretin vaguely resembles Johnny Depp. Lucky for Depp he paid his early career dues by working in horror films and on TV, rather than performing in softcore crap like fellow luminaries Sylvester Stallone and Kevin Costner did. Otherwise he might have shown up in sleaze like this baby.

2014 NOTE: Junker has been reissued on DVD by Alpha Blue Archives in an abbreviated 34-minute version titled OAKIE MAID to pad the running time of one of their new Ed Wood tribute collections.

Another Bizarre One from Steckler

Devil's Little Acre (1972)

* 1/2 (out of 4)

Three brother, all farmers, decide they need some women in their lives so they call the Ozark Maids Employment Agency (ran by Rene Bond) who quickly send a couple girls over.

Ray Dennis Steckler is such a fascinating director as he made some really awful comedies, some really awful horror movies and he also made some adult movies but refused to ever really talk about them. I've always found him adult movies to be a lot more interesting than his regular films because they're what I'd call anti-porn meaning that you can tell he didn't want to make them and he tried to make them as ugly and as different from the normal as possible.

The strange thing about DEVIL'S LITTLE ACRE is that it's actually a softcore picture that has some really weird things in it. For starters, there are a couple scenes where the male actors are fully erect yet Steckler does everything he can for us not to see any actual hardcore action. If you're not going to see it then why have the actors "up" so to speak? The simulated sex scenes are laughably bad in the way they were shot so these didn't help matters.

Another strange thing about the picture is that the comedy is just downright bad and these three brothers are about as annoying as they get. There are a lot of close-ups of the female body but there's really not too much else going on here. I'm really not sure what the hell Steckler was doing with this but it's certainly poorly made and makes very little sense. Again, my love of Bond made me watch this movie and as usual she's quite charming and I do think it's funny that she got to work with Steckler and Edward D. Wood, Jr..
