The Top 7 artists on “American Idol” Season 22 each performed twice on Sunday, May 5 — a dance song and an Adele song — with audiences voting live coast-to-coast for their favorites. (Read our minute-by-minute recap.) Ultimately, after nearly 19 million votes were cast, host Ryan Seacrest announced that the pair of singers who were eliminated prior to next week’s Top 5 episode were McKenna Faith Breinholt and Julia Gagnon. Cue the fan outrage!
Throughout the competition, McKenna belted out tunes like “There Was Jesus” (Auditions round), “Anyone” (Showstopper round), “The Story” (Top 24 round), “Both Sides, Now” & “Tumbleweed” (Top 20 round), “Hard to Say I’m Sorry” (Top 14 round), “cardigan” (Top 12 round), “Iris” (Top 10 round), “Everywhere I Go” (Top 8 round) and “E.T.” & “Make You Feel My Love” (Top 7 round). The 25-year-old esthetician from Gilbert, Az initially went viral on “Idol” when her adopted family and her birth family surprised her at her audition, creating a rather emotional moment for everyone involved.

Algar (“Mary & George”) stars as Nixon, a social media manager and puzzle addict who spends her free time solving complex riddles. Ethan Hawke reveals what Denzel Washington said to him the night Hawke lost his ‘Training Day’ Oscar
The year was 2002 and Ethan Hawke was up for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his work in “Training Day.” When Marcia Gay Harden read Jim Broadbent’s name, winning for “Iris,” Hawke’s co-star Denzel Washington whispered something in his ear.
It wasn’t “boom!” As Hawke revealed in a recent interview, Washington – who had already won an Oscar for “Glory” and would win a second that very night – said, “It’s better that you didn’t win. Losing was better.”
Hawke, who would go on to get three more Oscar nominations for acting (“Boyhood”) as well as screenwriting, expanded what Washington meant. “You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status,” he said. “That’s the way he thinks. That’s what I’m talking about playing with Babe Ruth. The Academy Award has more power, because Denzel has a couple.

Ethan Hawke was nominated at the 2002 Oscars for best supporting actor for his performance in Antoine Fuqua’s crime thriller “Training Day.” He lost the prize to Jim Broadbent (“Iris”), but he immediately got some much-needed perspective from his “Training Day” co-star Denzel Washington, who happened to win the Oscar that same night for best actor.
During a recent interview on Max’s “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” series, the host asked Hawke about a story he heard in which Washington leaned over to Hawke after the latter’s Oscar loss and whispered in his ear: “It’s better that you didn’t win. Losing was better.”
“You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status. That’s the way he thinks,” Hawke said about Washington’s advice in the moment on Oscars night. “That’s what I’m talking about playing with Babe Ruth.

Ethan Hawke is revealing the advice his Training Day co-star Denzel Washington told him after he lost at the 2002 Academy Awards.
The two legendary actors were both nominated that year for their roles in the 2001 film, including best actor and best supporting actor, respectively. While Washington won in his category, Jim Broadbent beat out Hawke for his performance in Iris.

In 2002, Training Day costars Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke were Oscar-nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. Washington won, Hawke did not, losing to Jim Broadbent for his role in Iris.
Hawke said Washington provided some sage advice after he lost.
“You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status,” Hawke quoted Washington during his appearance on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace on Max. “That’s the way he thinks, and that’s what I’m talking about playing with Babe Ruth.”
The latter reference comes from Hawke previously comparing acting with Washington to what it would be like to play baseball with all-time baseball great Ruth. “I think when all is said and done, he’s the greatest actor of our generation,” Hawke said. “The Academy Award has more power because Denzel has a couple. It didn’t elevate who he was.

For the fourth consecutive year, we’ve got a firecracker of a Best Actress Oscar race. Lily Gladstone took home the Screen Actors Guild Award on Saturday for “Killers of the Flower Moon” over Emma Stone, who had been on a roll since the two won their respective Golden Globes, having pocketed the Critics Choice and BAFTA Awards for “Poor Things.” Now they each have an industry prize and Best Actress feels like a coin-flip. Gladstone has closed the gap on Stone in the Oscar odds since Saturday. Don’t be surprised if she overtakes the top spot soon. But when the SAG Awards and BAFTAs don’t align in Best Actress, which one has the edge at the Oscars?
Since BAFTA became an Oscar precursor 23 years ago, the Brits and the actors guilds have disagreed 13 times in the category prior to the Battle of the Stones. But not all splits are created equally.

Hong Sang-soo is known for a slow-paced filmmaking style that studies everyday situations through an almost peculiar minimalism. His nonchalant characters always seem to make way for intimate moments of connection, offering the patient viewer experiences of unexpected warmth. Still, his abstruse style can set up a project to fail, with conversations fading within a series of ellipses and momentum diminishing in what feels like a wholly improvised exercise. This is mainly the case with A Traveler’s Need, a half-hearted story about a French woman in Korea which seems to resemble an odd comedy sketch on most occasions.
In her third collaboration with the Korean filmmaker, Isabelle Huppert plays Iris, a wandering French woman with no past and few worries. We open as she converses with Isong (Kim Seungyun), a shy young woman who answers the protagonist's questions about her piano playing. Huppert's lines feel stiff from the get-go,...

Once upon an awards season, Lily Gladstone looked to be the Oscar frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Then, she switched categories and was many experts’ tips to win Best Actress instead. Now, however, her status as Oscar favorite has dwindled — with an omission at the BAFTAs contributing to that.
Instead, Emma Stone looks like she might take home her second Best Actress Oscar for “Poor Things” after she won her first in 2017 for “La La Land.” Stone will surely cement that status with a predicted win at the BAFTAs, where she is nominated alongside Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Vivian Oparah (“Rye Lane”), and Margot Robbie (“Barbie”).
Stone is the overwhelming favorite to win this BAFTA award and she sits top of our BAFTA odds chart for this category with Hüller in second.

BAFTA threw up plenty of surprises and snobs in their nominations lineups this year with Best Actress one of the most intriguing and head-scratching categories of the year. “Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone was snubbed while Annette Bening (“Nyad”) also didn’t make the cut. Both of those performers were nominated at the Oscars, however.
Instead, the BAFTA nominees for Best Actress are Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Margot Robbie (“Barbie”), Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), and Vivian Oparah (“Rye Lane”). Have you looked at the Billboard Hot 100 lately? If not, you’re in for a treat. The Christmas classics have flooded in and shaken everything up, making for one slightly surreal snow globe that features Doja Cat, Bing Crosby, Burl Ives, and Gunna all rocking around the same tree. Speaking of which: Sixty-five years after its release, Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” is finally at Number One. In another 65 years, “Cruel Summer” will probably still be in the Top 10. If we’re lucky, Jason Aldean’s “Try...

Dame Judi Dench has done pretty well for herself in an acting career that has lasted over half a century. For her film acting alone, Dench has been nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning one for her supporting performance in 1998’s “Shakespeare in Love.” She also earned nine Golden Globe noms for her film work (including a win for 1997’s “Mrs. Brown”) and three for her TV work, including a win for 2000’s “The Last of the Blonde Bombshells.” She has also received 13 nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Award, winning twice (for “Shakespeare in Love” and 2000’s “Chocolat”). And if that wasn’t enough, she won a 1999 Tony Award for her performance in “Amy’s View.”
Let’s take a photo gallery tour of her 12 greatest films, ranked from worst to best. It includes the movies mentioned above, plus “Notes on a Scandal,” “Philomena,” “Iris” and more.

Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy amassed 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins between the three films while the prequel “The Hobbit” series garnered a further seven nominations. Out of those 35 Academy Award bids, however, only one came for acting. That was for Sir Ian McKellen when he was nominated in 2002 for Best Supporting Actor for “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.” It was Jim Broadbent who won that category that year, for “Iris,” so Middle Earth performers have been overlooked somewhat for their part in the huge success of the fantasy film series. However, a handful of thespians who have appeared in either “The Lord of the Rings” or “The Hobbit” (or both) have found Oscar success elsewhere in their career. Here’s the rundown.

In 2004, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” became the film with joint-most Oscar wins of all time with a whopping 11 victories, matching the total tallies of both “Titanic” and “Ben-Hur.” Those 11 Academy Awards capped off a hugely successful trilogy of movies that collectively snagged 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins in total. But yet… Peter Jackson‘s film series, adapted from the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, is so, so good that, well, it could have won more. That sounds greedy and over the top, of course, but if you take a look at each film’s nominations, it’s actually very feasible that any one of the three films could have turned the bid into a win. So, with that in mind, here are five Oscar nominations that “The Lord of the Rings” films could and perhaps should have turned into victories.

Future Islands have readied their seventh studio album, People Who Aren’t There Anymore. The full project arrives January 26th, while new single “The Tower” is out now.
The follow-up to 2020’s As Long as You Are, People Who Aren’t There Anymore was produced by Future Islands alongside Steve Wright, while Wright mixed the project with Chris Coady. It arrives on CD, cassette, standard black vinyl, transparent vinyl, and yellow and black “yolk” vinyl that features alternative artwork. Pre-orders are ongoing.
New track “The Tower” begins with almost understated synths before building to the type of shimmering chorus Future Islands are known for. “Threw a bottle across the water/ To someone who’s thinking of me,” Samuel Herring sings. In its brooding music video, directed by Johnathan Van Tulleken, he does just that, as he and bandmates William Cashion, Gerrit Welmers, and Michael Lowry walk across a deserted beach.

Few American filmmakers of the last 40 years await a major rediscovery like Hal Hartley, whose traces in modern movies are either too-minor or entirely unknown. Thus it’s cause for celebration that the Criterion Channel are soon launching a major retrospective: 13 features (which constitutes all but My America) and 17 shorts, a sui generis style and persistent vision running across 30 years. Expect your Halloween party to be aswim in Henry Fool costumes.
Speaking of: there’s a one-month headstart on seasonal programming with the 13-film “High School Horror”––most notable perhaps being a streaming premiere for the uncut version of Suspiria, plus the rare opportunity to see a Robert Rodriguez movie on the Criterion Channel––and a retrospective of Hong Kong vampire movies. On Monday’s episode of “The Voice,” the Season 23 playoffs began for Team Blake Shelton and Team Chance the Rapper. (Team Kelly Clarkson and Team Niall Horan will have their time in the spotlight next Monday.) Of the whopping six artists that were sent packing this week — three from each team — we asked our users to vote for who was unjustly eliminated, and their poll results overwhelmingly favor Kala Banham. She gained fans this year by jumping around from coach to coach, starting on Team Niall, then moving over to Team Kelly, before finally settling in at Team Chance.
Indeed, Kala nabbed 51% of fans’ votes, compared to 19% for their second-place choice, Jamar Langley of Team Chance. Interestingly enough, the only Team Blake member with double-digit support was Mary Kate Connor at 12%. Here are the complete poll results for who your fellow “The Voice” viewers think was most robbed this week:...

After each team of five sang in front of the studio audience, their coach had to save just two of them, which meant the other three singers were eliminated.

So, did you ever wonder why Carol Burnett always tugs her ear? It was a way she could say “hi” to her beloved grandmother. The first time she did it was when she made her TV debut at 22 on the Dec. 17, 1955 episode of the popular “The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show.” She played the girlfriend of the woody dummy. “The first song I sang on TV was ‘Over the Rainbow’ to Jerry Mahoney,” she noted in a 2016 L.A. Times interview with me. “I remember I called my grandmother to tell her I was going to be on television. Nanny said say hello to me. That’s when we came up with pulling my ear.”
Nearly seven decades later, Burnett is still tugging at her ear, singing and making people laugh And on April 26th, which is her 90th birthday, NBC is throwing her a celebration “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.

Kelly Clarkson shared a touching moment with Henry Winkler this week. While appearing as a guest on Clarkson’s talk show, the “Barry” actor recorded a message for Clarkson’s daughter, with whom he shares the same learning disability.
“She’s dyslexic, and you have told me that you’re dyslexic as well,” Clarkson said to Winkler of her daughter, 8-year-old River. “I find it amazing to tell my daughter that you’ve written like 40 books and you’re dyslexic because she was getting bullied at school for not being able to read like all the other kids.”
Winkler looked into the camera to deliver a message to the little girl. “River,” he said, “how you learn has nothing to do with how brilliant you are.”
The message seemingly overwhelmed Clarkson with emotion, and she quickly teared up. “It’s fine,” she said as she reached for a tissue. “We’re fine,...

The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.
“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.
On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

Kat and Elliot’s big moment in the season finale of Hallmark Channel’s The Way Home featured actor Evan Williams in more ways than one. Once the British film academy showered “All Quiet on the Western Front” with seven BAFTA Awards, it became difficult to imagine that there would be much overlap between its 2022 honorees and the subsequent Oscar winners. Although they lauded its film editing, the Brits otherwise overlooked industry juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which, as expected, proved to be an Academy Awards magnet. In the end, the two organizations only agreed on a handful of below-the-line wins, while their top eight category results were completely different for the first time since the BAFTAs became an Oscar precursor more than two decades ago.
At last month’s BAFTA Awards, which took place exactly three weeks before the Oscars, the above-the-line categories were dominated by “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” with three wins each. The former took the top prize of Best Picture and was honored for its directing and adapted screenplay,...
