Anne of Green Gables: The Animated Series Review - A Faithful Adaptation with Some Flaws
hdoerr-021087 January 2024
I recently watched Anne of Green Gables: the Animated Series, and it was a good show. It had its ups and downs, but I'd give it a 7 out of 10 overall.

The animation style was cute and colorful, and the voice acting was solid. I also appreciated the show's commitment to staying faithful to the source material, which is always important to me as a fan of the original book series.

However, there were a few episodes that dragged a bit and some character arcs that felt rushed. Some of the dialogue was sometimes a bit cheesy, but that's what to expect in a children's show.

Despite its flaws, I enjoyed watching Anne of Green Gables: the Animated Series. I recommend it to book series fans or anyone looking for a wholesome, family-friendly show to watch with their kids.

Not the best, but still cute

I love the "Anne" book series. I also love the live action movies that were made about them. I have seen several episodes of the animated series and, honestly, I don't think it lives up to the others. Don't get me wrong, it's a very cute show and one of the better children's ones I have seen. It just changes the book far too much, in my opinion.

Not like the Anne movies but well worth it!

Anne the animated series is not like the Anne of green gable movies; it is actually a mix of Anne of green gables and Road to Avonlea. So if one expects to be watching Anne as in the books or the movies, then yes you can be a little disappointed. However, I love both Anne (the books and the movies) and the Road to Avonlea series and anything that brings me back to Avonlea, I truly enjoy. It is a great show for children: (it is intended for children and not for Anne's fans! It contains good morals and good values. I am glad my daughter loves that show, as I am not worried about her picking up bad influence seen in other shows for children. Even my son likes the show (although he is not a consistent viewer.)

Steaming pile of drivel left behind by her Jersey cow

Warning: Spoilers
I could only watch the first episode and half the second. The only thing this atrocity has in common with "Anne of Green Gables" is the title and the names of some of the characters. Their characters are utterly unlike the book characters, barring, perhaps Marilla. If Montgomery bitterly disliked the first 1917 movie, she'd have a fit and fall in it if she watched five minutes of this.

In the first episode, Anne and Diana have a bitter quarrel. We know from Diana's wedding scene in the books, that they claimed their friendship had lasted throughout their youth with never a harsh word between them.

The kids are playing baseball, wearing a batting helmet as an important part of the plot line, in a pickup game in a Canadian back-country hamlet in the 19th Century.

The story is interrupted by preachy politically correct gruel, directed at teaching everyone to sit together and sing Kum Bay Ah.

When Gilbert and Anne were completely playing together and cooperating in the second episode, I shut it off and returned the DVD to the library. That friendly interaction rips the heart out of the book's plot.

Fortunately, I have just found the 50 episodes of the 1979 Japanese cartoon on YouTube. Excellent. I watched the first English-dubbed episode tonight, and it, at least, is utterly true to the book.

Cute adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and Road to Avonlea.

I personally enjoy seeing this because it's based on the books/movies Anne of Green Gables and The Story Girl/Road to Avonlea. It's interesting to see how the stories were adapted to be viewed for younger children. While it's not what I would consider the greatest cartoon show I've ever seen, it does have it's good points and is fun to see(it usually conveys a great message too). I would recommend this for a person to at least watch once, especially if they are an Anne fan.

Not awful as kids shows go, but why did they have to mess around with an old friend?

Anne of Green Gables has been a favorite in our family for years, both the books and Kevin Sullivan's original adaptation. This animated series is no better or worse than most kids shows: minimal animation and preachy storylines. What grates is the fact that Anne, Matthew, Marilla, and the others are old friends, known and loved. It is painful to see them forced into the mold that the level of this show requires. Sort of like Night of the Living Dead: you know the names and faces, but your friends are NOT themselves!
