Barns are a-burning, Paul Newman is recommended to Joanne Woodward as ‘a big stud horse’ and Lee Remick oozes sexuality all over Martin Ritt’s CinemaScope screen. William Faulkner may be the literary source, but this tale of ambition in the family of yet another southern Big Daddy is given the faux Tennessee Williams treatment — it’s a grand soap opera with a fistful of great stars having a grand time.

The book was raw & dirty, and did you read what that girl did with that guy on page 167? Racking up a stack of Oscar nominations, Peyton Place became one of the big hits of its year, launched the careers of several young actors, and proved that Hollywood could pasteurize most any so-called un-filmable book. Lana Turner is the nominal star but the leading actress is Diane Varsi, in her film debut.

True-Crime Terror! Richard Fleischer and Edward Anhalt’s riveting serial killer makes extensive use of split- and multi-screen imagery. One of the most infamous murder sprees on record fudges some facts but still impresses as a novel approach.

It’s what Josh Baskin and MacMillan play during the memorable dance scene in 1988’s Big but it’s also what the film is infused with, making it stand up to the test of time. Yeah, its look is dated thanks to bad hair and big shoulder pads, but the story of a 13 year old’s wish to become an adult endures.
20th Century Home Entertainment has released Big 25th Anniversary Edition this week, in time for last minute stocking stuffers. Given her enduring appeal fifty years after her death, it can easily be argued that Marilyn Monroe was the signature pop culture icon of the 20th Century and her allure is lasting well into the next century. Last year, I read Max Allan Collins’ take on Marilyn’s death before watching Michelle Williams portray her in My Week with Marilyn. Her career has become the spine for the NBC series Smash. Her image is found in commercials, artwork, music videos, calendars, and on and on. While her appeal and persona don’t grab me, I respect her impact on America and the world.
Out this week form 20th Century Home Entertainment, in time for the morbid memorial, is the seven-disc Blu-ray set Forever Marilyn. Chicago – When I was younger, I considered the blockbuster flop “Tora! Tora! Tora!” pretty boring. Critics over the years and friends have remembered the film more fondly than when it was released and therefore made me feel like perhaps a re-appreciation was in order. Nope. It’s still boring. And now it’s boring in stunning HD!
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
To be fair, “Tora! Tora! Tora!” does look pretty damn good in the new collector’s edition from Fox. One would never guess that the film is over forty years old as it’s been mixed better than a lot of the works from its era. In the early days of HD, a large number of ’70s films were over-polished, resulting in plastic-looking actors and poor color levelss. It’s nice to see remastering done well, even if it is for a movie that baffles me in its very existence. Why...

Tora! Tora! Tora!
Directed by: Richard Fleischer, Kinji Fukasaku and Toshio Masuda
Cast: Jason Robards, Martin Balsam, Sô Yamamura, Takahiro Tamura
Running Time: 2 hr 25 min
Rating: G
Due Out: December 6, 2011
Plot: The story of the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor is told from the point of view of both sides of the conflict.
Who’S It For? War buffs, your Dad, but also any American who wants to know a little more about their country’s history.
Movie:
Though not a financial success at the time of its release, Tora! Tora! Tora! has aged well thanks to the accuracy of the filmmakers. Unlike Pearl Harbor, the filmmakers focus on the actual story of the attack and the events that led up to it, rather than trying to force in a love story or anything else that may detract from what happened. Also, to tell the story from both sides,...

First order of business … a big thank you to Dennis for covering last week and doing it so brilliantly. Honestly, I'm glad I didn't have to recap that episode, given it had one of the most riveting cliffhanger moments we've seen on this show and I'm not sure I'd have been emotionally capable of writing so soon after.
I'm talking, of course, about Andy storming out on his date with Holly, leaving us all in high suspense over the future of their romantic relationship.
Oh, I guess something also went on with Jessica about to burn to death. Might as well kick off with how that all turned out …
Burned & Spurned
Picking up right where we left off, Jessica opens the mansion doors to blinding sunlight and immediately bursts into flames, thereby freeing actress Deborah Ann Woll to star in that remake of Bewitched everybody's suddenly so keen on.
Kidding!

All About Eve is regularly considered to be one of the greatest films from the annals of Hollywood’s history and with a record 14 Oscar nominations – tying it with James Cameron’s epic Titanic (1998) – and 6 wins, it’s hard to argue against it’s importance. And now with today’s Blu-ray upgrade, improving on all previous DVD releases, it’s great to see this piece of film history transformed into a slick, deserving and glossy HD presentation. If you’ve never taken the opportunity to delve into the world of back-stage dramas and one-upmanship then now couldn’t be a better time.
All About Eve follows the schemes and manoeuvres of an aspiring actress, Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter), as she attempts to inculcate herself into the life of aging, but mammoth stage star Margo Channing (Bette Davis) and her array of theatre friends. As Eve engineers herself to become indispensible to Margo,...

Chicago – Fox has released two of the most beloved films in their extensive back catalog of movies waiting for their HD debut and just in time for Valentine’s Day. Forget traditional flowers or chocolates and pick up the lovingly-packaged, beautifully-transferred, and bonus-packed releases of “All About Eve” and “An Affair to Remember.”
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
If I were to pick one of these two movies, it’s “All About Eve” in a walk. The winner of six Oscars, including Best Picture, “All About Eve” is a classic, featuring one of my favorite actress performances of all time in Bette Davis’ master class on how to steal not just a scene but an entire damn movie. “An Affair to Remember” features two wonderful actors at the peak of their charm — Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr — and its their talent and amazing chemistry from minute one that make the movie work as well as it does.

M*A*S*H may be the ultimate tool for reigniting a passion for Donald Sutherland’s career. As he got into his later years Donald took on increasingly drab roles that had him sporting the bushy white moustache and leaving all the real work to the younger starlets he was inevitably paired up with. In the days of M*A*S*H, Donald Sutherland was that younger star – that bright burning talent that electrified each cell of film with a presence and humor without which the film would have been insufferable. Donald Sutherland ought to credit M*A*S*H as his acting opus and yet it begs the question whether or not Robert Altman was the only director who ever knew how to get a truly brilliant performance out of him. Sutherland never gave a better show in the years after and most certainly never in his films before M*A*S*H.

Burbank – Chat Fatigue is coming.
Forget swine flu (or H1N1); Chat Fatigue will be the sickness that will overtake millions this fall. The group most susceptible to this are NBC viewers. Now that Jay Leno will be taking over the 10 p.m. slot from Monday to Friday (starting Sept. 14) on the Peacock network, viewers will get four hours of people sitting behind desks and talking directly to the camera.
Can the average viewer really handle going from Leno to local news to Conan O’Brien to Jimmy Fallon to Carson Daly? How many guys in suits and ties sitting behind a desk do you want to experience after an 8 hours of work day with guys in suits and ties sitting behind desks? They’re all going to stare at you through the boob tube and jibber jabber. Kinda like the doofus with the desk next to you at work.

Chicago – I worry that young people out there raised on syndicated reruns don’t know that the beloved TV show “M*A*S*H” is actually based on not just any movie but a great comedy featuring two actors at or near their prime and directed by one of the best directors that ever lived. Perhaps a great new Blu-Ray release from Fox will correct the oversight.
