M. Night Shyamalan hit the jackpot with his 1999 movie The Sixth Sense, which established him as a brand in suspense-thriller movies. While pitching the story to different studios, Shyamalan wanted them to fulfill a few of his conditions. The director knew that he was making a risky gamble since he was only known in the industry for writing a few spec scripts at the time. However, his gamble paid off as studios were fighting each other to bid for his film.

Shyamalan’s story revolved around Haley Joel Osment’s Cole who claims to see dead people in the movie. He has the caring psychologist Malcolm Crowe, played by Bruce Willis, guiding him through his newfound abilities. However, Crowe doesn’t realize that he’s helping himself by helping the kid.

M. Night Shyamalan's filmography has been uneven, but the director has always returned with a new hit after a failure, which in itself makes him a unique auteur. On August 9, 2024, the director's next project will be released, titled Trap, which is already fascinating viewers with its trailer alone.
In honor of this, we offer a list of Shyamalan's films to watch and revisit – not including The Sixth Sense, which needs no introduction.

Several couples with their children come on vacation to a paradise island that ordinary people don't know about. The beach turns out to be amazing, but terrible things happen on it: first the tourists find the body of a girl, and then the children suddenly start to grow up by leaps and bounds. Time passes faster on this beach, and it is impossible to get out of here: any attempt to do so results in losing consciousness.

There is not a more divisive filmmaker working today than M. Night Shyamalan. Everyone can basically agree that his 1999 breakthrough "The Sixth Sense" is a supernatural classic, but after that? Slip on the brass knuckles and get ready to rumble. Shyamalan's early 2000s hits "Unbreakable" and "Signs," along with his 2017 comeback "Split," generate the least amount of friction, but aside from those three, it's so very on. You'll hear reasonable defenses for just about all of his films (save for the singularly atrocious "The Last Airbender"). While it's hard to sway folks on a movie as wackadoodle as "The Happening," it is only a good thing to have a major filmmaker knocking out provocative original movies for major studios.
Shyamalan's latest provocation, "Trap," will be his first project under his first-look deal with Warner Bros., and as is typically the case with a new Shyamalan movie, we know next to nothing about it.

A group of people stuck in an isolated location being terrorized by enigmatic and very possibly supernatural forces residing just outside the barriers of their refuge, all of which feels more like a waking dream than events taking place in the real world? "The Watchers" is a Shyamalan joint alright, just not the Shyamalan who gave us thrillers like "Signs," "The Village," and "Knock at the Cabin." This intriguing big-screen take on A. M. Shine's novel of the same name instead comes from writer and director Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of M. Night and a first-time feature filmmaker looking to mark a splash after helming multiple episodes of the acclaimed Apple TV+ series "Servant" (which M. Night also worked on as a producer and director) and doing second unit work on some of her pop's pictures since his return to low-budget thrillers around a decade ago, starting with "The Visit.

After its initial reveal last year, developer Deklazon had dropped a new story trailer for their upcoming alien abduction title They Are Here: Alien Abduction Horror. The trailer focuses on journalist Taylor Fox, who is investigating an alien abduction involving the Sherman family at Grayswood Farm, and the consequences of him looking a little too far into someone’s business.
Wearing its obvious inspiration from The X-Files on its sleeve, They Are Here also draws from films like Signs, Dark Skies, The Gracefield Incident, War of the Worlds and others. The game follows journalist Taylor Fox, who is contacted by a farmer named Peter Sherman, who tells Fox about terrifying, inexplicable phenomena occurring on his farm. Fox heads over to investigate, but finds the home deserted. The animals on the Sherman farm are sick, infected by some parasite. From a note, Fox learns that the farmer’s daughter Megan had disappeared.

The early aughts were a very good time to be M. Night Shyamalan, certainly the best time. Coming off his Oscar-nominated blockbuster The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan was instantly a household name and recognized as one of the most exciting new filmmakers to come along in years. He was even dubbed “the next Spielberg” by Newsweek Magazine. Night certainly leaned into this hype, very much enjoyed the accolades and attention and quickly parlayed that good will into a couple of memorable thrillers: 2000’s Unbreakable and 2002’s Signs. While neither film reached the box office or pop cultural heights The Sixth Sense did, they were evidence that Shyamalan was indeed a born filmmaker, able to craft genre films that were suspenseful and dramatic in equal measure. After Signs came out, it was hard to find someone who didn’t know the name Shyamalan; he was the rare director whose name was as...

“Of a child laborer?” Christy laughed.
“The adults, they’re like, ‘We want you to be this way, this way, do this’ — whatever,” Abigail said.
“But your autonomy is like not really,” Christy said.
“Yeah, it’s not really that important,” Abigail said.
Christy said she thought directors and other production staff who were parents were better prepared to connect with child actors.
“They were way nicer to work with. They could connect with us on a whole different level. But it is interesting.

At a time when syndicated science fiction was just Star Trek series, it took some guts on Warner Bros’ part to try something darker and more experimental with J. Michael Straczynski’s Babylon 5, designed to tell a sprawling epic that was more political than it was space opera. The show arrived thirty years ago and was successful enough to spawn spin-off five telefilms and a short-lived spinoff, spanning 1993-2007.
The core of it, the 110 episodes from the original five-season series, have been remastered and collected on a nice Blu-ray box set from Warner Home Entertainment. Also included is the original pilot film.
Set in the 23rd century, the Earth Alliance has found its place among star-faring races, notably the Minbari and the Centauri. Some of these races are fine with humans; others wish them gone. Then there are the Vorlons, and no one knows what they want.

The 2000s was a strange time for genre filmmaking and especially science fiction. While sci-fi cinema was in theory thriving, that was mainly thanks to the presence of franchises that were, in fact, their own mini-genres (like Star Wars and Star Trek). Then there were superhero films, always sort of a cousin to sci-fi, with the X-Men and Spider-Man series both exploding and the Marvel Cinematic Universe making its debut with Iron Man (2008) just as the decade came to a close.
But there were some top-shelf literary adaptations as well. Steven Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) was a flawed yet powerful expansion of a Brian Aldiss story while his War of the Worlds (2005) and Minority Report (2002) were outstanding takes on classic tales from H.G. Wells and Philip K. Dick (there might have been no sci-fi filmmaker more consistent at the time than The Beard). Other remakes or adaptations,...

M. Night Shyamalan's thirty-year-plus career has gone through many highs and lows — from rising to prominence as an innovative auteur to becoming a parody of himself with a string of unsuccessful studio sludge, then experiencing a comeback through the lo-fi horror genre. Whether he's viewed as a critical darling or a critical punching bag, Shyamalan continues to deliver suspenseful stories that delve into the darkest, most emotional corners of the human psyche.
After his masterpiece "The Sixth Sense" thrust him into the spotlight, Shyamalan became synonymous with supernatural thrillers that deliver a gobsmacking twist, turning the world of the film completely upside down. But soon these astonishing final revelations became an expectation that not every film was able to deliver, even becoming ridiculously absurd.

October brings many rewards, not the least of which is a slew of fantastic motion pictures to watch. I love a good horror movie, and the spooky season is the perfect time to bask in the morbid side of Hollywood and beyond. Whether you travel back in time to feast on Universal's classic monster series like "Frankenstein," "Dracula," and "Creature from the Black Lagoon" or indulge in modern fare such as "Hereditary," "Get Out," or "M3GAN," there's enough variety to please all but the pickiest of movie fans.
Moreover, most horror films require multiple viewings to fully appreciate, if only to catch all the sneaky Easter eggs and clues the filmmakers squeeze into every frame. Out of all the different types of films, the horror genre takes some of the biggest swings when it comes to endings. From bleak conclusions to those that tie everything up in a neat bow, horror movie endings have shocked, confused, and annoyed audiences over the years. One's opinion on horror's most (in)famous endings depends a lot on personal preference. Do you prefer an ending that offers hope or one that drives home a message of wretchedness? Are you a fan of the Shyamalan twist, or do you go for a more subtle approach?
A lot of thought goes into the ending of any film, and horror movies in particular. Sometimes, the director or writer's original vision isn't what ends up on screen. What’s worse than someone breaking into your house in the middle of the night? Something breaking in. That’s the setup for Brian Duffield’s tense sci-fi thriller, No One Will Save You.
Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever) is a young woman who lives alone in a big house in a small town following her mother’s death three years earlier. Alienated from her community because of a past tragedy, she bides her time by creating a model village, making and mailing clothes, and practicing steps for a dance she likely will never be asked to join. She’s lonely, but trying to wrap herself in whatever happiness she can conjure.
And then, one night, the lights flicker. Brynn hears a noise and decides to investigate. She creeps downstairs only to find the door of her isolated country house wide open, and the sound of shuffling in the next room. She hides from the intruder,...

When you weren't looking, Brian Duffield snuck in and suddenly became one of the coolest names in original genre cinema. With his scripts for the slasher comedy "The Babysitter," the deep sea survival horror-thriller "Underwater," and the post-apocalyptic monster movie "Love and Monsters," Duffield has demonstrated a clear appreciation for not just the tropes of specific genres but also how to use them (and when to subvert them) to explore the human condition.
Much like his feature writing/directing debut, the teen horror rom-com "Spontaneous," uses the metaphor of high schoolers spontaneously combusting to talk about the malaise that plagues everyone in the 21st century (but especially young people), Duffield's second movie as a writer and director, "No One Will Save You," is all about the universal struggle of making peace with the mistakes of your past when personal salvation seems impossible. That it's also a story about an alien...

Spoiler Alert: The following review contains spoilers.
Got trauma? A global alien invasion is all it takes for emotionally scarred Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever) to sort through her issues in “No One Will Save You,” an extraterrestrial creature feature cut from the same cloth as M. Night Shyamalan’s “Signs,” where the jump scares are secondary to an earnest (but far less effective) portrait of coping with guilt and grief.
Building on the novelty value of 2020 debut “Spontaneous” (in which a bunch of teenagers inexplicably start to pop like pimples), director Brian Duffield sets multiple creative challenges for himself and mostly succeeds — well enough to attract eyeballs to this buzz-worthy Hulu release, at least. Amusingly enough, one of the things liable to get people talking is Duffield’s decision to construct the film with hardly any dialogue.
Brynn’s a loner, living in a house that looks like it was decorated by a 12-year-old girl.

Why do people love the John Wick movies? Is it because of the charisma and soulfulness of star Keanu Reeves? Is it because of the jaw-dropping action sequences? Or is it because we’re all just fascinated by the gold coins, the High Table, and all the other rules and lore of the assassin world in which John and his friends and enemies operate?
The prequel miniseries The Continental: From the World of John Wick is sure hoping it’s the latter. It has some witty and creative fight scenes,...

Among the new releases this week is Brian Duffield’s No One Will Save You, a home invasion with an alien twist starring Kaitlyn Dever and debuting on Hulu on September 22. With it comes the realization of how scarcely populated the sci-fi horror subgenre gets regarding the iconic Gray aliens. These quintessential aliens have emerged recently in the news, but their cinematic counterparts are rarer. That’s a shame, considering how effectively they induce terror, as evidenced by M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs (on Max).
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to the quieter alien invasions. These sci-fi horror films revolve around the Grays and similar extraterrestrials that are more content to invade and toy with their prey quietly.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Aliens have arrived, and that may be just one of Kaitlyn Dever’s problems, in the new trailer for “No One Will Save You.” The sophomore effort from director Brian Duffield, whose “Spontaneous” was an unusually of-the-moment horror parable for kids growing up in an era of mass shootings and climate change, arrives on Hulu courtesy of 20th Century Studios on Sept. 22.
Dever stars as Brynn, who puts up a surprising amount of resistance when aliens show up on her doorstep. The trailer cleverly starts with a tease that the film will be a home invasion thriller before revealing that the invaders aren’t from our planet. We then get a montage of our heroine doing her best to fend off the intergalactic menace, including period details like a rotary telephone and what looks to be 1970s wardrobes.

The new trailer for No One Will Save You, from writer/filmmaker Brian Duffield (Spontaneous, Love and Monsters), has arrived this morning ahead of its Hulu premiere on September 22. And it looks absolutely intense.
Starring Kaitlyn Dever, the sci-fi psychological thriller plunges an anxiety-ridden homebody into a nonstop nightmare when aliens invade her home. The trailer teases a variety of alien invaders, including perhaps a few of the human variety, with the scares bolstered by a chillingly effective sound design.
Bloody Disgusting exclusively spoke with Duffield ahead of the trailer’s debut to learn what audiences can expect, from the movie’s tone to the aliens themselves.
“The trailer’s not far off from the movie. It is aggressive and tense, and there are moments of levity, but they’re few and far between. It’s a pretty lean and mean movie,” Duffield tells Bloody Disgusting of how accurately the trailer captures his film.

Happy September, Horror Fiends! It’s a time for cozy sweaters, pumpkin-spiced everything, and… menacing cornfields? That’s right! As the amber hues of fall sweep in and we all debate the merits of pumpkin spice (is it delightful or overdone?), there’s another seasonal staple that’s been quietly setting the stage for some of cinema’s creepiest tales: the seemingly innocent cornfield.
These golden labyrinths, with their whispering stalks and hide-and-seek vibes, have long been the go-to backdrop for filmmakers with a penchant for the spooky. And honestly, who can blame them? There’s something inherently thrilling about not knowing what’s lurking just a few rows over. Maybe it’s a scarecrow… or maybe it’s something far more sinister.
So, if you’re looking to add a dash of harvest-time horror to your movie nights, or if you’re just curious about why cornfields are Hollywood’s favorite rural runway,...

Many have praised Phoenix for his on-screen acting abilities. He’s even recently won an Academy Award for Best Actor thanks to his contributions to Joker. But Phoenix hasn’t always had the same confidence in his own skills. His critiques were one of the reasons why he couldn’t stand watching himself in films.
“I feel I’m guilty of trying too hard to make sure you understand,” Phoenix once said according to South China Morning Post.
Still, Phoenix tried to watch himself in films a few times. But he typically had the same reaction.

A lot has happened since the turn of the century. We at Den of Geek can certainly attest to that as we’ve seen the movie industry change and grow, embrace streaming, and pivot toward intellectual property. Yet even as our present stays in a constant state of flux, our fascination with the future remains unwavering.
What dreams may come in 15 years? Or 30? Or a hundred as technology evolves and its relationship with humanity is renegotiated?
If you told a room full of geeks 20 years ago that the 2020s would be a world filled with smartphones and tablets, social media-shaped democracies, and something called “TikTok,” they might think you’d written a sci-fi movie. Still in that upheaval, we saw some pretty good science fiction stories come out in their own time, both Hollywood blockbuster big and intimately indie; iconic and underappreciated.

Exclusive: On the heels of his newest feature Radical‘s Festival Favorite Award win at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, filmmaker Christopher Zalla has inked with Entertainment 360 for management.
Zalla wrote and directed the critically acclaimed drama, based on a 2013 article written for Wired magazine by Josh Davis, which was among the most discussed titles at Sundance 2023. The film is based on the true story of Sergio Juarez Correa (Coda‘s Eugenio Derbez), a teacher in the neglected town of Matamoros, Mexico, who as Zalla notes in his director’s statement, suffered “a mental breakdown” after “increasingly failing to reach his students in each successive year.” When Correa stumbled upon “a new kind of child-directed learning” in a Ted Talk, he decided to try to implement it, in order to turn the situation in his classroom around, to profound results.

Now available on PC, and coming to consoles June 13, The Greyhill Incident takes place in a small town that resembles the cornfields and all around atmosphere of the town in M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs. In fact, there are many comparisons between the two in the most awesome and frightening of ways.
You play as Ryan Baker and are in walkie talkie communication with others around the town who know something strange is afoot at the Circle K (Disclaimer: This is a Bill and Ted quote. There are unfortunately no Circle K convenience stores in the game). You’re all in agreement that the Government is lying and not to be trusted. Which is why you’ve all started this kind of nighttime neighborhood watch together. Things take a dark turn, of course, when the aliens show up and brazenly start abducting folks out of their homes. Including your own son.

Alongside viral outbreaks and murderous revenants, horror games love pitting us against threats from beyond the stars.
If you have even a passing interest in the genre, then you’re bound to have dealt with a few alien hordes in your time, as we just can’t seem to get enough of these terrifying close encounters. In the past twelve months alone, we’ve fought extra-terrestrial beasties in The Callisto Protocol, Signalis, Scorn, and of course, the exemplary Dead Space remake.
And while those titles certainly had their differences and idiosyncrasies, one thing remained consistent across the board. Exclusive: Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm, a rising writer-producer coming to television from the world of theater, has signed with Artists First for management.
Chisholm most recently created, exec produced and served as co-showrunner for AMC’s comedic sci-fi series Demascus, produced by Gran Via. While his original pilot was picked up to series and shot its entire first season, it was one of a number of projects axed at the network amid a push for cost-cutting.

[This story contains spoilers for “Signs,” the fifth episode of Ted Lasso’s third season.]
During a press day for Ted Lasso’s third season, The Hollywood Reporter asked co-creator, executive producer and actor Brendan Hunt about whether Richmond’s honeymoon period with superstar Zava (Maximilian Osinski) would wear off.

In episode 5 of "Ted Lasso" season 3, the Greyhounds are coming off of a brutal loss to West Ham that knocks them even further down the Premier League power rankings. Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Richmond's owner and biggest champion, storms into Ted's office and yells, "Are we ever going to win another f***ing match?" Clearly, the team is spiraling and the pressure of joining the Premier League is mounting, causing a rift between Rebecca, the team, and the fans; a rift that's only growing larger week by week.
Of course, the entire Richmond community wants their team to win and Ted has an obligation to make sure they're the best they can be. But season 3 as a whole has become a little too concerned with what's happening on the field and in episode 5, "Signs," the obsession with winning becomes too much of a focus for a show that's always chosen...

Kieran Culkin is opening up about growing up with his massive and famous family in New York City. Kieran, who stars as Roman Roy on "Succession," is one of seven kids shared by Kit Culkin and Patricia Brentrup. The pair never married, though their split in the 1990s and ensuing custody battle became tabloid fodder because Kieran's brother Macaulay had become very famous after starring in 1990's "Home Alone" franchise. Kieran revealed in an interview with Esquire published March 27 that his dad - an actor himself - had all seven try to be actors, though only Macaulay (who his siblings call Mack), Kieran, and Rory pursued it seriously.
The family grew up in the Yorkville section of Manhattan, and Kieran says that even though he was just a kid himself, he felt bad for the way fame affected Macaulay's life. "Poor f*cking guy," he told Esquire of his brother.

Peacock continues to expand its growing library of films with “Knock at the Cabin,” which will stream exclusively on the NBC platform starting March 24.
The M. Night Shyamalan thriller, starring Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge and Rupert Grint, follows three family members who are camping in the woods and are suddenly interrupted by four strangers with visions of an impending apocalypse. The only way to prevent the end of the world, they claim, is to have the family willingly kill one of their own.
The movie collected $14.2 million in its opening weekend in February, enough to top box office charts and dethrone “Avatar: The Way of Water.” It also landed a promising “A-” CinemaScore from ticket buyers.
However, Shyamalan’s new horror thriller wasn’t as much of a hit with critics.

“Poker Face” has captured the hearts of viewers week after week on Peacock, but Episode 8 — titled “The Orpheus Syndrome” and co-written and directed by Natasha Lyonne — is a true love letter to a specific field of cinema: special effects artists.
Rian Johnson’s ingenious new mystery series follows a young woman named Charlie (Lyonne) with the almost supernatural ability to tell when someone is lying. After getting into some hot water at the casino where she works in Reno, Charlie takes off on an odyssey across the United States, running from a dogged mob enforcer (Benjamin Bratt) and helping to solve mysteries wherever she turns – everything from murderous regional theater performers to a pair of aging hippies out for revenge. And this week’s episode is the show’s most audacious and original hour yet.
