- Five years into the future, six astronauts are on NASA's Odyssey mission to place a new revolutionary satellite above Earth. The astronauts include flying ace and mission leader Chuck Taggart, pompous horny quip-prone British science author Kurt Mendel, Chuck's computer genius son Neil Taggart, popular news anchor and TV reporter Sarah Forbes, Chuck's co-pilot Angela Perry and a technician from NASA. Everything is going fine until the Earth suddenly catches on fire and blows up for no apparent reason. The Odyssey crew's space shuttle gets damaged in the explosion which leaves the technician dead and Angela badly hurt and unconscious. The rest of the crew is in shock but tries to focus on keeping the vessel together. Once they stabilize the shuttle, the gravity of the situation hits them - the Earth is gone, everyone they ever met, knew or loved is gone including all of their family members and friends, they are the sole survivors of the human race, and they are stranded in space where they'll soon die as well when their air supply runs out. They muse about their predicament and eventually except their fate. Just as they are about to suffocate, a transcendental alien vessel arrives and picks up their shuttle. They wake up in the alien ship only to see an old friendly man who tries to explain the situation to them. He is the Seeker, a sentient alien artificial lifeform that's trying to discover who's been blowing up worlds with sentient lifeforms on them throughout the galaxy. He believes that those responsible always infiltrate the societies on the planet they're targeting first and then somehow orchestrate its destruction from within the system. Angela is about to die from her injuries so the Seeker suggests that he sends the crew's consciousnesses five years back in time which would both save Angela and give them time to find out who's trying to blow up the Earth and why and then try to stop them. Chuck agrees and they all wake up five years in the past, in 2002. They are all initially ecstatic but their return to the past also causes some major problems. Chuck becomes obsessed with bringing the crew together and investigating the possible reasons for the world's destruction - including NASA's secretive project Blue Sky that their mission was a part of. Chuck confesses that the satellite they were taking to space was not a communications satellite and although he doesn't know its true use, he did notice that a mysterious signal from Earth was sent to the satellite just seconds before the world exploded. His obsession and secretiveness leads his wife to believe that he's having an affair. He tries to tell her the truth but she's not even remotely buying it. Kurt, who was on the mission as part of NASA's publicity stunt to bring more attention to their space program by including random celebrity person on the voyage, plans to get filthy rich quickly through sports betting since he now knows all the results. He also intends to sleep with as many women as he can and have as much fun as he can before the world ends. His plan immediately backfires however, when he realizes that although he may know the outcome of a game, the game still might play out differently with accordance to the Butterfly Effect theory. In other words, the fact that these five people know the future automatically changes it in a slight or severe way. Neil is now a teenager again, which means that he has to go to high school again. He now also looks like a metal head, since that's the phase he was in at the time. Both Sarah's first husband and young son are now alive again, so she decides to quit the crew and try to preventively save her boy, who in the original timeline died from rare form of cancer that was detected too late. The tragedy destroyed her first marriage and she later remarried. Unfortunately, her oblivious husband doesn't understand why she's so obsessed with their son's health and tries to stop her from sending him to further check ups and tests, which puts a serious strain on their relationship. Angela, who was unconscious during the Earth's destruction and the alien's visitation, suddenly finds herself at the exact place where she was five year ago - in the middle of a dangerous space walk. She freaks out since she has no idea what's going on and why she's suddenly in the past. Chuck remembers that she was on a mission in 2002 and quickly arrives at NASA with Kurt to try to help her pull herself together. When Chuck's good friend and NASA's high official is killed in what seems like an accidental car collision, the crew reunites and investigates his death. The man who hit his car and also died was receiving experimental gene therapy, which according to his desperate wife completely changed him in a bad way. The crew investigates the doctor behind the therapy and finds evidence that there may actually be a conspiracy at hand. What they don't know is that this is just a tiny piece of the puzzle and that their enemies aren't just human - or alien.
- From space, the crew of the space shuttle witnesses the Earth's destruction. The crew is given a chance to go back in time and change the course of history, in the hopes of altering the world's tragic fate.—Anonymous
