I would rather have been Jason.
Aaron137517 May 2009
This game came out on the original Nintendo system and was supposed to be controversial or something, but it really just plays out like your typical game during the time except for the fact every now and then Jason comes out to kill you. Really though you are attacked by more than him as snakes and other critters come after you, like you needed the extra challenge. There are horrible boat scenes, you have to rescue the kiddies, and then you face off against Jason in a shed almost Punch Out style only you get to use machetes and such on him. If you do manage to take his health all the way down he only comes back like one of his bad sequels and you must face him all over again and he is even stronger than before. So in the end you have your typical Nintendo game that is incredibly hard and challenging. I would have rather been Jason hunting the teens and killing them as that would have just been more fun as it would have been different for the time.

SCARIEST VIDEO GAME I PLAYED AS A CHILD
RODRO10 June 2003
This game scared me to death as a child!! I played it when I was 7 years old and it changed in some way my taste in video games. Since I played "Friday the 13th" I haven't find any other video game that could scare me. I've played and beat Resident Evil, the scary Silent Hill, Clock Tower, Shadowman, etc. and none of them matches the fear factor of Friday the 13th.

I remember the tension when Jason would kill the children and your character was far to save them. Jason's mother's head is stuff for legend in a video game.

I recommend this game if you live the Friday the 13th experience like me, and other fans. Nevermind the fact that this game it's not based faithful to the movies.

An Honest Review
generationofswine4 November 2020
So excited to play out Friday the 13th as a kid, we all got on our bikes and rushed to the video store when they FINALLY got it...

... only to be disappointed again by another horrible game based on a movie.

It was more playable that MOST of the other games based on movies... but it was still a jumbeled non horrific, boring and repetitive mess where Jason was far too easy to beat and everything else had no place in the Friday the 13th world.

it was a disappointment, but at least it was a disappoint that we could tolerate playing for a little while

Just awful...

Seriously one of the stupidest games I've played from this era. This makes Friday the 13th: The Game look like a masterpiece in comparison. It's bonkers to me that this trash-tier game has managed to cultivate a cult-following over the years.

One of the worst NES games
gangstahippie21 July 2006
Rated T for Violence.

I enjoy the Friday the 13th horror series.I actually liked the film Freddy Vs Jason.I have not seen all the Friday the 13th movies but I have seen some.Anyway I used to have an NES Emulator on my computer. One of the games I got for it was the Friday The 13th NES game.I played it and I was disappointed especially after having played the fairly good Nightmare On Elm Street game.Maybe for 1989 the game was pretty scary and you could walk on foot and drive boats but other than that the game has no redeeming values. The graphics are not very good even for the NES.The gameplay is sort of boring and pretty hard. All you do is see bad guys pop up and kill them with rocks.Definitely not worth your time.If you want a good horror game for the NES then play Nightmare on Elm Street. That game was actually pretty good.Don't bother with this one even if you're a big fan of Friday the 13th.

Lame game!
erk_4224 April 2008
This game was horrible. I remember playing it on Nintendo over at friends house. Talk about a waste of time! The mapping is inconsistent. Walk left and you'll head right!! It takes you nearly forever to get to where you need to go. Sometimes, it's too late! You hear the "Jason alarm" and you take up so much time figuring out what way you're going, Jason's hacked himself up a nice pile of bodies by the time you get to th right cabin. When you actually get into a cabin, it's so tedious. At times you'll encounter faceless children, which is perhaps the most creepy thing about the game. When you finally get to fight Jason, he's nearly impossible! It takes like a hundred hits to get him down and only about two for him to take you down! WTF?!

Genuinely creepy video game. Not for children!
insomniac_rod19 August 2006
A classic spooky video game for everyone! A game that has managed to scare many generations of video game players.

I can perfectly remember how shocking this game was when first released. Everyone was talking about it because it was "very scary!". The curious fact is that many avid players of the game didn't even know about the existence of the "Friday the 13th movies". As a die hard fan of the movies I immediately bought this dirty little gem.

The plot is a mix of the movies from part 1 to seven, completely ignoring "Jason Takes Manhattan". There are specially many scenes from the first three movies. Your principal objective is to save the Camp Crystal Lake kids from Jason. If you enter the cabins when he's about to attack them, you will face him and try to kill him. Not the Jason we know in the movies! but still scary enough.

The plot and graphics are surprisingly the less thing you should care about this video game. The real best thing about the game is the creepy/scary factor. No kidding. This game had creepy music, atmosphere, settings, plot, etc. Not to mention that Jason makes frightening surprise appearances! Then, when you face Jason's mother it's also very creepy.

Please, do yourself a favor and FIND this video game. It's probably scarier than many 2000's Horror movies. If you can beat this game, you are truly a Camp Blood survivor!

awesome game for NES
karlajames32-116 January 2008
This game was very challenging, and as a 10 year old I didn't pick up on Jason's striking patterns. After figuring out how to remember where your counselors are and utilize them all to keep them alive and well equipped, you must defeat a series of beatings by Jason. The lake will wipe you out of life, and there is nothing you can do about it, which always made me mad. When the screen would stop scrolling, you know Jason is coming, but sometimes he would pop up and scare the crap out me. If it took you a while to master Metroid, this game is a great challenge. I never did beat it before growing into my adolescence and not caring about NES anymore, so I was not disappointed by the lame ending!

Great game...would have been better with orignal concept
Wrestlord125 June 2003
This is a great game, one of the hardest the NES had. It took me a long time to beat it and Jason's random pop-up's were cool and it had good music, good controls, and it was an overall challenging and fun game. But...the original concept of the game would have been 100 times cooler. Originally you would be able to play as either the counselors or Jason! I would have loved to go around hacking up peeps Jason Voorhees style, that would have ruled! The only complaint I had was this, those damn counselors sure did look happy to be at camp blood don't you think. The ending could have been better too, but oh well.

Great - A Classic
MessedupJames12 February 2002
I love this game! I still haven't beaten it, or even Day 1 yet alone, but I can tell you that this game is one of the best sleepers EVER! In it you are a camp counseler, one of 6, and you have to protect yourself and the 15 little kiddies from becoming Jason's victims. There's also zombies, bats, wolves, and even Jason's mother that you must overcome to beat this game. An NES classic, even if the music gets annoying after a while.

Violent, but fun.
DrMetal9 May 2002
First of all, this was a very hard game to play. You can choose to be one of 6 camp counselors at any given time during the gameplay, each with their own preferential abilities (ie - some can run faster, throw faster, row faster, etc). The object of the game is to "kill" Jason 3 times over the span of 3 days, all while protecting the children (yes, that's right, he will kill them if you don't help them, which is one of the very morbid and disturbing parts of this game) and making sure at least one child stays alive when you kill Jason for the last time in order to win the game. As expected, Jason comes back tougher and tougher each time you kill him. You must use your characters to gain valuable clues in various cabins, collect stronger weapons (you start with a rock), defeat Mrs Voorhees (or her floating head, whichever you prefer) and obtain a few items in the end that will eventually enable you to destroy Jason. Contrary to popular belief among former players of this game, Jason runs a very predictable pattern, depending on the player you start with, and where Jason first attacks. Also, the "strong" items and weapons available in the game can be obtained through repetitive patterns. If anybody has any questions about this game, feel free to email me about it. It's been a long time since I played this game, but it took forever to master, so I will most likely remember any questions anyone may have.

Fun until the disappointing ending.
caerlas8 April 2002
The concept behind this game was very good. The creators even made this 8-bit game fit the creepy mood they were supposed to but c'mon man! The ending stinks! You go through hell to finally kill Jason, then he comes back, then you kill him again, then he comes back again, then you kill him a 3rd and final time, and basically the ending is comprised of a few words and a "The End" title. Oh well, that's 8-bit games for ya.

not a bad game
Barry_Ace21 May 2003
Obviously, the people who designed this game didn't take the time to study the films (or probably didn't watch them). But other than that this game is a great challenge. Adding Jason's Mother's head was a great touch and kept the first film remembered.

Friday the 13th!
Movie Nuttball13 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Friday the 13th is one of the most different adventure video games! The characters, the scariness, the action, and the sure thrill of adventure makes this game a fun non-stop playing time! Below is a brief look how I think the game is!

Game Play: The game play is very good. There is really basic controls here and is easy to perform. Novice gamers should have a good time here!

Graphics: The graphics are wonderful especially for the first Nintendo. The backgrounds are really beautiful! Difficulty: The game is easy but as it goes on you find out that it will become more difficult!

Music: The music is great! Just fantastic catchy tunes through out the game! In My opinion its some of the best music ever in a video game!

Sound: The sound is great. Nuff said!

Overall: I have always loved Friday the 13th! If you like excellent adventure games that has Jason, Wolves, Ghosts, Creatures, Zombies, and more then I strongly recommend you play this game!

This game is extremely challenging!!!
smack_down8115 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoy playing this game and still play it from time to time. Jason is ridiculously hard, and it took me a few years before I beat the game. The ending is lame, however; and it didn't make a lot of sense that he had zombies and crows and wolves as his cronies. I wish developers had the balls of making a new Friday the 13th game. The graphics we're really good for a NES game, and the music was really creepy. Pamela Voorhees' severed head was an unexpected pleasure to see in the game, and the developer's stuck to the movies origins fairly well. I would dare say that this is in my top 10 favorite NES games. If you are looking for a challenge and you own a Nintendo Entertainment System and do not own this game, I suggest you pick this game up. You can go on Ebay and easily find a copy there.
