On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: A Very Sapphic Second Coming
Given the choice to watch Jesus fight a pack of lesbian vampires or an honest-to-God homophobe, I will almost always choose the lesbian vampires. It’s not that I wouldn’t like to see an intolerant bigot get roundhouse-kicked by the Prince of Peace; in fact, that image is particularly tempting ahead of Easter weekend during an election year.
But as an ex-Catholic school girl born of the “Twilight” generation, my unquenchable thirst for horny vampires supersedes my taste for virtue signaling most of the time.

Low-budget film-making duo announce plans to take advantage of Canadian copyright laws and adapt the Ian Fleming story. Ideally, with Ryan Reynolds
A duo of low-budget Canadian film-makers have announced plans to remake the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only, thanks to a loophole in copyright laws.
Lee Demarbre and Ian Driscoll, whose back catalogue includes the Mexican-wrestler thriller The Dead Sleep Easy and comedy musical Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, say they are planning to take advantage of Canada’s 50-year copyright limit to start work on a new adaptation of Ian Fleming’s 1960 short story. Unlike most other major film markets, Canada does not enforce the Berne convention that extended authors’ copyright to 70 years after death, meaning that Fleming, who died in 1964, is in the public domain in the country.

With a whopping $749 million in box-office so far in spite of decidedly less glowing reviews than its predecessor, the producers behind the James Bond franchise aren't wasting any time getting the next film in the series going.
Speaking with 20 Minuten this week, Barbara Broccoli revealed that the hope is to continue with Daniel Craig in the role, but either way they're getting to work on the next film very soon:
"We have put three years of work into 'Spectre.' It was a thrill, but now we want to enjoy the success and the reactions of the audiences. In spring we start again. I hope we can continue with Daniel [Craig]. I love him, obviously not just me but also the audience. I will try my best to keep him on."

Canada is the home of national healthcare, maple syrup, politeness, Tim Horton's, and in what should be a rather interesting development, the expiration of the copyright on James Bond. io9 does a good job of breaking down how this came to be, but what it essentially means is that anyone, within Canadian borders, can reproduce and sell Ian Fleming's works, write new James Bond stories, or readapt what has already been published. And a couple of directors are thinking about the latter option. Read More: Ranked: Every James Bond Film From Best To Worst Speaking with CBC's "q," Canadian filmmaking duo Lee Demarbe and Ian Driscoll (who have previously teamed on genre fare "Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter" and "Smash Cut") have revealed their plans to redo "For Your Eyes Only." Why that story in particular? Well, a portion of the tale takes place in Ottawa, where the duo are based,...

It has been announced that David Cronenberg’s first feature film, Shivers, is in the process of being remade:
‘Toronto — September 6, 2013 — Producers Jeff Sackman and Michael Baker today announced that they will remake the horror classic Shivers, David Cronenberg’s first feature film. That film, highlighted with a special screening at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, broke ground with its boundary-pushing sexuality and violence in its original release, nearly 40 years ago.
Shivers will be directed by award-winning Danish filmmaker Rie Rasmussen from a screenplay written by Ian Driscoll. Sackman and Baker will produce through their respective companies, Tajj Media and Bunk 11 Pictures. Working with them as executive producer is the film’s original executive producer, André Link. Shivers will begin shooting in February 2014, with casting currently underway.
In Shivers, a genetically-engineered strain of parasites that turn people into violent, compulsive sex-addicts is released into a self-contained luxury apartment complex.

Manborg
Directed by Steven Kostanski
2011, 60 minutes, Canada
In Manborg, scenes are repeatedly stolen by a borderline illiterate, wildly Australian 1980′s Billy Idol lookalike packing twin energy pistols that grow out of his hands and a knack for posing.
What’s that?
You need to know more?
I disagree, but will nonetheless proceed.
Coming at you from Astron-6 productions and the mind of writer/director Steven Kostanski, Manborg is a genre-mashing love letter to a childhood spent watching 1980′s cult television and the cut scenes in early 1990′s computer games.
In a similar vein to Alugro’s Italian Spiderman or fellow Canadian Lee Demarbe’s Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, Manborg brings utter sincerity to a story that could easily have had the fun sucked out of it by overly self-conscious delivery or winking at the audience. Yeah they know the source material is kind of stupid but they also know it...

About a year ago, there was a major studio bidding war going in Hollywood on over Seth Grahame-Smith's Jane Austen mash-up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Lionsgate ended up winning the rights, and although it seemed like just another silly property being bought for the catchy name alone, it did attract some impressive talent: David O. Russell will write and direct [1], while Natalie Portman will star [2]. This week Seth Grahame-Smith's next book Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has just hit stores, and apparently Hollywood is getting worked up into a frenzy all over again. No studio has optioned it as of yet, but it has caught the attention of two big name directors: Timur and Tim Bur! Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) have previously worked together as producers on the animated film 9, and now they will team up to oversee this project as well. Neither one is likely to direct,...

There has been a lot of talk about Ashley Green and her new horror film Summer's Moon on Horror Yearbook lately. And although I think it has just been an excuse to post pictures of Greene in a bikini, here is the trailer and official synopsis for those of you who are actually interested in the film. Director Lee Demarbre's (Smash Cut, Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter) Summer's Moon arrives on DVD November 10, 2009. Hardened teenager Summer (Ashley Greene - The Twilight Saga) is on the road looking to meet her estranged father but her only clue to his whereabouts is a letter from a rural community called Massey. Once she arrives in town, Summer is rescued from a run-in with the law by a charming local handyman named Tom. The couple quickly hit it off and head back to the house Tom shares with his mother. Summer soon...

Smash Cut is a film by Canadian film-maker Lee Demarbre (Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter). It is a kind of throw-back to the horror fantasy yarns of the 1980's, when a director could rent out a studio lot and go nuts for a week - try his best to get some kind of film put together. I'm talking Charles Band, Golan-Globus, Canon. I'm thinking Orca and the Outlaws, Arena, Trancers: Cheap, quick and there to get cash for the next project, certainly not out of major artistic vision. In the film, aging director Able Whitman, played by David Hess (The Last House on the Left), is sitting in the back row during the screening of his latest effort: Terror Toy. A film so laughably bad that the audience jeer and promptly empty the cinema.

Your Hands Are Bleeding! Your Hands Are Bleeding! Lee Demarbre Talks About His New Film Smash Cut
Lee Demarbre, the Ottawa-based talent behind Canadian cult films Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter and The Dead Sleep Easy turns in his most self-reflexive work to date - a tribute to pioneering exploitation director Herschell Gordon Lewis set in the unsympathetic world of contemporary independent filmmaking!
Grindhouse titan David Hess (The Last House On The Left, House On The Edge Of The Park, Hitch-hike) stars as Able Whitman, a down-on-his-luck horror filmmaker subject to relentless mockery from obnoxious critics and jaded audiences alike. It seems that nobody likes his latest film Terror Toy, or finds its killer – a foot-high clown named 'Bobo' – very believable. After a car accident with no witnesses leaves a stripper friend dead and in pieces, Whitman is struck with a revelation - he'll use real body parts in his film!

Crush and Blush Directed by Lee Kyoung-mi * 1/2 Lee-Kyoung-mi’s first feature tries too hard to be the “polar opposite” of a romantic comedy. The story of a male teacher being stalked by a former pupil who has now become a teacher herself in order to be closer to him to attract his attention simply does not sustain the premise past the opening 20 minutes. The lead character, Me-sook, is played in an over-the-top fashion, and the film seems to have been made for the art-house crowd in spite of its plot, which seems ripe for a broad comedic treatment. The films also seems haphazardly edited and is often needlessly confusing. Grace Directed by Paul Solet *** ½ Childbirth can be a horrific experience if things go wrong, a fact ably exploited in Grace, which acts as a surefire contraceptive. An impressive first feature by director Paul Solet, who delivers an ambitious and masterful web of chills,...

- Anyone seeing Smash Cut without knowing anything about it could be forgiven for thinking it's a bad film. But when viewed within its context as a tribute to the filmic ouevre of Herschell Gordon Lewis (Color me Blood Red, 2000 Maniacs), the king of grindhouse and exploitation cinema of the 60s and 70s, director Lee Demarbre's (Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, The Dead Sleep Easy) homage can't be seen as anything but good, bloody, campy fun. And there's nothing wrong with that. Featuring a cast of grindhouse and/or B-movie legends like David Hess (the original Last House on the Left), Michael Berryman (the original The Hills Have Eyes), and Ray Sager (the original Wizard of Gore himself!), plus a H.G. Lewis appearance and a mainstream(!) film debut for adult film starlet Sasha Grey, Smash Cut tells the story of down-and-out movie director Able Whitman (Hess, looking like he's having

Fantasia Festival is North America’s premiere (and largest) genre film festival. It is also my favorite film festival and so I could not wait to share the highlights of this years line up. Below is just some of the films we will be reviewing on our upcoming podcasts. The Children - North American Premiere UK Dir: Tom Shankland A holiday weekend turns into a nightmarish battle for survival when children inexplicably begin to slaughter their parents. Far more frightening than Children Of The Corn or the bulk part of other killer kids pics that have preceded it, this British powerhouse shocker ranks among the best horror film offerings of recent years. The Children inverts unconditional love with an impact that will freeze your blood. Would you be able to protect yourself if the people you loved wanted to cut you to pieces without any sense or reason? The film's terrors are character-driven,...

While we wait for the schedule for Fantasia 2009 to be finalized, we did receive a couple of press release announcing the fest's line-up, and per usual, those of you who are planning to attend are in for one helluva genre extravaganza.
First up is a bit of news about the fest's extended schedule: Due to a veritable deluge of feature presentations, Fantasia is extending its 13th edition for two extra days and will therefore be taking place from July 9th to the 29th at Concordia University’s Hall Theatre. As North America’s largest genre film festival, Fantasia will once again make good on its promise to deliver diversity, innovation, entertainment, food for thought and a good dose of eccentric and biting humour.
Next is a message from Fantasia's Co-Director of International Programming, Mitch Davis, highlighting some of this year’s spotlights:

From the mesmerizing Countess Maja to the captivating Carmilla Karnstein, lesbian vampires embody immortal sin.
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Vampire lesbians, is there any creature more seductive, hypnotic or seductively sinful? Jesus Christ himself had to come back in the 2001 film Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter to protect Canadian lesbians from the most provocative of predators.
Saphic sanguinarians started staking their claim in Joseph Sheridan le Fanu's novella Carmilla (1872). From Gloria Holden’s magnetic eyes in Dracula's Daughter (1936) through Ingrid Pitt’s sultry invitation in The Vampire Lovers (1970) to the revivalist Lesbian Vampire Killers, the irresistible sirens have held an almost fetishistic fascination over moviegoers.
Charles Busch lightly spoofed them in the downtown stage play Vampire Lesbians of Sodom. Jesús Franco exploited them in the 1971 West German-Spanish horror film Vampyros Lesbos, starring Soledad Miranda as the Countess Nadine Carody.

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Not exactly the greatest of weeks for DVD and Blu-ray releases, but I have added a bunch of new titles and release dates (links at the bottom) and I am sure Disney is loving the empty week to debut their direct-to-dvd Tinker Bell feature. Tinker Bell I received this late last week and haven't had a chance to give it a watch yet. I was hoping to get it watched before I ran this week's releases so I could have a full review for you, but no such luck. You can watch the trailer below, but other video I have seen of the flick doesn't really give much of an idea of what the film is about outside of telling the story of Tinker Bell's origins and how fairies help the seasons change. Not sure what the plot twist in the story is,...

Ashley Greene, the smokin’ hot star of this fall’s Twilight, has signed on for the indie thriller Summer according to this morning’s THR. She'll play a girl looking for her long-lost father who runs into a family of serial killers.
I really hope there’s more to it than that, because man if I have to sit through yet another over-the-top indie fest about a crazy family of killers, I’m going to seriously consider starting one of my own. And you do not want that.
The tentatively-titled Summer is being helmed by Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter director Lee Demarbe; it’s already halfway through its shoot in Ottawa, and the trade reports we’ll be seeing the first footage from it at this year’s Afm.

I’ve spent the last day in Ottawa on the set of the latest film from Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter director Lee Demarbre and while I’ve got to hold off a bit to comment on what I’ve seen on this set as part of the visit I was just given a look at several scenes from Demarbre’s Smash Cut, the director’s tribute to Herschell Gordon Lewis starring horror icons David Hess (Last House on the Left) and Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes) along with *ahem* adult star Sacha Grey. Lewis has not only given his blessings to the film but appears in a small role while Hess takes the lead as a struggling film maker who resorts to extreme measures to add realism to his films.
So, what did I think? The second film shot on the Red camera here in Canada the thing looks great.
