Disney Park Adventure
This is another under the radar gem, it's not one of my favorite Disney/licensed games nor strongest entries in my book, but I had fun with it for what it is. This was an interesting idea making a game based on a theme park, I really like that I don't really see video games set in theme parks most of the time their set as stages in most video games, so this is part of what makes the game unique. Personally, I love theme parks, they really are an interesting ground for action because there is so many places to go and do.
This game is a mini game collection as you venture to each section of the park, each one is based on some of the famous rides and attractions from "Disneyland" but with a video game spin to them; and each contain a different kind of game and challenge.
The only bad thing is the trivia game, some of the questions asks are rather difficult ones if you're not familiar with Disney history which most NES players weren't. Let alone I personally am not into Trivia/Quiz games, I'm not into the board game "Trivia Pursuit" their just not my kind of game. But this part is only on a little of the game so it's easy to get past.
The graphical presentation is solid, it's not one of Capcom/Disney's greatest in my book but it's good enough to give us the product. I like the overview map, it's loosely if not totally accurate to the Disneyland park. Here you pretty much have the freedom to just about go anywhere you want and beat the game in any order you want, which feels true to the experience of a theme park which is about having the freedom to go and have fun wherever and whatever you desire.
Music is decent, which I'll admit is another weak point of the game, there are really that many memorable tracks in my book, but the music is serviceable and fits the nature of the game. The only track that stands out that I think is solid is the Space Mountain sequence which I thought was solid as it has that feel of an interstellar thrill ride.
I'll just say a few of the games that I really like, two of the attractions actually had video games made about them later but the difference is, the games here are actually good.
The Haunted Mansion: This one I thought was kind of cool your typical platform actioner, remined me a little of "Ghosts N Goblins" even plays like the game which is a perfect fit. I really like how the game is divided into sections where in one you in the cemetery, another you get to the mansion and you ascend the floors which have all kinds of surprises and challenges in each. The enemies are animated well and there is decent variety in them like zombies, zombie ghosts, vampires. Your only weapon is candles which take them out but there is a limited supply of them so make good use of them. Another is you have an item screen depending on what you were able to by at the stores, which can give you a step up in things and help in beating the level faster.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Yes, it's another platform actioner similar to "Ghosts and Goblins" but once again is really solid. Here you fight Pirates and Skeleton Pirates and dispatch them the same way with candles. But the difference in this game and the other is here you can't pass go unless you rescue all of the maddens in peril much like in "Shinobi" where you have to rescue all the hostages. This really isn't so difficult once you know all the places they're at and how to rescue them.
Space Mountain: This one I really like because it's pretty much a rally race but in space. You're in command of a space shuttle and as you are going at light speed there is a monitor in front of you, you have to constantly pay attention to as it gives instructions like which direction to turn immediately or to even shoot immediately whenever an enemy ship is in your way. But as you get further, it gets a lot quicker and causes you to react quicker, so your reflexes are really tested.
It would be cool having this kind of idea again, it could work for our modern games and improved; where there would be a sequel, but this would be based on their other park "Disney World" we would make it more of an open world game where you have even more freedom to go wherever. But also, we would have more games which would be based on rides, locations, and attractions. Maybe even have some based on rides and attractions no longer there or even make some up. Well it's a nice thought anyway.
"Adventures in the Magic Kingdom" like any theme park is worth a visit.
