The music in Dig Dug only plays when your character is moving. This means the music will be fast when you are in a hurry, slow when you are plotting what to do next and completely silent when you stand around doing nothing.
The hero's name, Taizo Hori, come from the Japanese "Horitai zo" which literally translates as "I want to dig."
Just like in the fellow Namco game Pac-Man (1980), Dig Dug has a "kill screen" on the 256th level where game is no longer playable due to a programming limitation. When the level starts, a Pooka is placed on top of Dig Dug, and he dies immediately. This continues until all of Dig Dug's lives are depleted and the game ends.
