Taking the plunge.
planktonrules22 January 2020
"Beginning to Date" was probably a moderately helpful instructional video but when seen today it seems very quaint and silly. The film is less about sex and more about boys and girls as they begin to consider dating. It reviews the dos and don't of how to ask for a date, how to talk to a girl or boy over the phone and what to say when your date arrives. Much of it is helpful but a few of the 'rules' seem silly--such as that you MUST introduce the date to your parents instead of the other way around. The best thing about the film isn't necessarily their advice but that it probably helped to spur on class discussions when it was shown.

If you are curious to see it, look for the DVD "Sex Dos and Don'ts" by Alpha Video.

No Do-Overs
boblipton5 February 2024
Here's one of the few educational movies of the sort that showed up in class when the teacher was exhausted (probably from a night out drinking) that I found worthwhile. Yes, the rules of etiquette have changed enormously. However, I recall the age when I was beginning to date, and it was enormously stressful. A few helpful hints, about planning ahead in conversation would have helped. That's because, unlike this movie, you can't rewind the situation and try again. There were no do-overs. Foul up once and it would be all over the school what a dolt you were.

It's interesting to see Studs Terkel, that historian of the regular guy, playing the swimming coach.

Very similar to that OTHER dating film...

This film, similar in vein to 'Dating Do's And Don'ts' follow dating-challenged kids around and shows them what to do and what NOT to do. As a matter of fact, the film is almost a rip-off of Dating Do's and Don'ts. (Or maybe it's the other way around?) Anyways, a teen party is coming up, and we're shown how two boys go about asking girls to it. George asks Mildred, who, like DDAD, looks FAR too old (and 2 feet taller) then his proposed date. Amazingly, she accepts. Anyways, the other kid clumsily asks his date on the phone. Soon, they're off meeting the parents and then off to the date itself. While not as campy as DDAD (Beginning to Date seems to drag a bit actually) it still has it's gee willakers dialogue and silly humour to make it recommended.
