- In the summer of 1914, Matthew Armitage spends the weekend at the home of friend, Neil Carslake. While dressing in his room he sees a vision of sorts in the mirror where a man with a large scar on his neck is strangling an attractive young woman. At the party downstairs, he meets Carslake's sister, Sylvia and her fiancé who has a prominent scar on his neck. He's at something of a loss but in the end tells Sylvia of his vision. War is soon upon them and Armitage is in the trenches in Europe. He learns from a dying Neil Carslake that his sister never married. Armitage is also wounded and is scarred but he renews his acquaintance with Sylvia and they eventually marry. Armitage is shell-shocked however and proves to be a jealous husband. In a fit of despair, the vision he saw comes to pass.—garykmcd
