James Hawes‘ Holocaust drama “One Life” will be the American Express Gala at the 67th BFI London Film Festival.
The film tells the true story of Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to WWII, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Fifty years later, in 1988, Winton is haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England. It’s not until a live television show “That’s Life” surprises him with the surviving children – now adults – seated all around him that he can finally make peace with the loss he had carried for five decades.
The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn, Lena Olin, Romola Garai, Alex Sharp, Marthe Keller, Jonathan Pryce and Helena Bonham-Carter.
Hawes said: “This film pretty much begins and ends in London and says so much about the people of this city, its heart and its history.

His Dark Materials and Help writer Jack Thorne has been recognized for Outstanding Contribution to Writing at tonight’s 29th Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards (WGGBAs), with Russell T Davies, Emerald Fennell and Armando Iannucci also taking home gongs.
The prolific Thorne, who delivered this year’s Edinburgh Television Festival MacTaggart lecture, was presented with the prestigious trophy by His Dark Materials exec and Bad Wolf Co-Founder Jane Tranter, following a two-decades-long career in which he has penned some of the UK’s most critically-acclaimed hits including This is England, Shameless and The Virtues.
“I think all writers would say that being given something from other writers is the greatest honor,” said Thorne. “I don’t think I’ve really contributed anything much in this strange career, and writing is a really strange job, but I’m grateful, and slightly anxious, to now have this award to live up to.

A column chronicling conversations and events on the awards circuit.
This crazy season is starting to heat up.
The National Board of Review, usually first up in a “normal” season, settled for bringing up the rear this time since the Oscars were moved so late to April 25, and same goes for the Indie Spirit Awards which also offered up its nominations this week. Titles like Nomadland, One Night In Miami, Sound off Metal, Da 5 Bloods and Minari are all happy campers because most of these movies have scored repeatedly during the critics-list phase of Oscar season. Pundits looking to forecast the race based on these early precursors beware: a lot of these groups follow each other like sheep and generally prefer minimalist filmmaking, not necessarily the taste of those voters who toil in the industry itself, particularly from the various crafts. And, in this extended season, we are now...

France’s cinema authority the Cnc has announced that the indemnisation fund set by the government for film and TV series shoots has been doubled to 100M euros. A 50M public fund was originally put in place on May 6 to indemnify and guarantee against the risk of stoppages due to the coronavirus with a 20% cap in order to get productions back up and running after the end of lockdown on May 11. A further 50M euro fund has now been earmarked by a pool of French insurance companies, Aréas Assurances, the MacIf and Matmut. Shoots will have access to a total of 1.8M euros each, or 30% of any claims. Cnc President Dominique Boutonnat commented, “This new step doubles the compensation capacity for any Covid-19 related incidents on set, bringing it up to 100M euros. Freedom is developing a film based on Simon Goddard’s book Simply Thrilled, which charts the “preposterous story” of the short lived but seminal Scottish label.
It one of a number of projects for the fledgling firm, which was set up by former BBC Drama, World Productions and Stv development executive Mike Ellen. He previously ran the scripted slate at Amy indie On The Corner and produced Scottish soap River City for two years.
The company will be supported by BBC Studios’ production, business, commercial affairs and distribution teams, while the international division BBC Studios will also have a first look on distribution titles.

"Outlander" star Sam Heughan would like to remind 'Batman' fans he previously played the 'Caped Crusader' in Warners "Batman Live: Arena Tour" and is more than ready to play the DC Comics' superhero again for Warners "The Batman" stand-alone feature, as a chisled-looking, super-physically fit character, rather than a grizzled Ben Affleck, or rodent-faced Christian Bale:
Heughan is a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and a 2003 nominee for the 'Laurence Olivier Award' for 'Most Promising Performance'.
In 2012, he originated the role of 'Batman' in the DC/Warner Brothers and Waterlane production of "Batman Live," an international tour which opened at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles and went on to tour in South America and throughout Europe.
In 2010, Heughan was nominated for a British Soap Award for 'Villain of the Year' for his role as 'Scott Neilson' in the...

The console re-release of an existing mobile game, with added co-op And “arena” modes – hence the Arena Edition tag – Squareboy vs. Bullies is an 8-bit style old-school side-scrolling beat ‘em-up that looks and plays like Double Dragon meets Super Meatboy. The game sees you play as the titular Squareboy who finds himself standing up against the local bullies of Squareburg to do what is right, not just for himself, but for everyone in town that the bullies have victimized…
Ok, so we have a orange, square-shaped “boy taking on a bevy of larger, yellow, square bullies in hand to hand combat in a game that extols the virtues of Not using violence before letting you unleash a beating on everyone and everything? I love playing side scrollers on portable formats for some reason. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing but River City Rivals is giving a nostalgia fix and I dig it.
River City Ransom is a favorite classic game of mine from the Nes era. Originally a Japanese title called Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari it debuted in the U.S. in April of 1989. Side scrolling beat em ups are my jam and it generally these days except in indie titles has gone away. But here comes my Nintendo DS to the rescue. River City Rival Showdown from Natsume will be released this November on Nintendo DS platforms at $29.99 and retail include a special keychain while supplies last.
The game is a celebration of the original title but has added much more elements including an RPG style with different paths determining the ending.

How does Japan's Famicom Mini compare to Nintendo's Nes Classic Mini console? A new video explains all...
You probably already know that Nintendo's big hardware release this autumn is the Nes Classic Mini: a tiny version of its fondly-remembered 8-bit console which comes pre-packaged with 30 games, including Super Mario Bros, Metroid and The Legend Of Zelda. You may also have heard that Nintendo of Japan is releasing its own miniature console, the Family Computer Mini, which shrinks down the system's original design to an adorably dinky size - complete with wired in controllers.

Not wanting to leave its own native populace out of the loop, Nintendo has revealed another Classic Mini console for release later this year: the Famicom Mini – otherwise known as Japan’s equivalent of the West’s Nes.
The 8-bit device, which has been shrunk down to fit in the palm of the hand, mimics our own Mini Nes in that it comes pre-loaded with 30 classic games from the 80s, although Japan’s line-up differs slightly to our own. River City Ransom, Final Fantasy 3, Mario Club Golf and Yie Ar Kung Fu will only be available on the Famicom Mini, replacing West-only titles like Bubble Bobble, Castlvania 2, Donkey Kong Jr and the original Final Fantasy.
In case you haven’t already guessed – no, this miniature device won’t be releasing outside of Japan, so if you’re a die hard Nintendo collector, you’ll have to endure the import costs,...

I fondly remember my first exposure to the River City series: a big full-page ad in Nintendo Power that advertised the Atlus-published River City Ransom Ex with goofy-looking super-deformed characters. I’m not sure what it was exactly that made me gravitate toward that Game Boy Advance remake of the classic Nes title, but I’m sure it had something to do with the large menus of food the characters could purchase and eat (while I hadn’t quite rounded out yet, I was still a fat kid waiting to happen). In any case, once I got my hands on the game, I fell in love with its weird and wacky blend of beat-’em-up sensibilities and role-playing elements. It wasn’t anything revolutionary, but it was an extremely fun and simple game to take on-the-go — and happily, I can report that exactly the same is true of the new River City: Tokyo Rumble.

At the same time we get the Nintendo Classic Mini in the west, Japan's getting a tiny Famicom with its own games selection...

The 30th Anniversary of the Japanese Classic Rivery City: Tokyo Rumble is finally getting a western release this summer! Come inside to find out more about the game!
I am well aware that the majority of our readers aren't able to understand Japanese, myself included. However, the trailer above gives us a good idea for what we can expect when Natsume releases their Japanese hit River City: Tokyo Rumble on Nintendo 3Ds, this summer.
Despite the graphics, the game looks to be a lot of fun. We're not exactly sure what all is going on in this game from this trailer, but it had us really excited for it. Any game where you can fight gangs one minute and then hit a police officer, get scolded, and then ganged up on by more police officers, the next minute, just sound like fun to me. It's like a 2D Grand Theft Auto!

Natsume have announced that they will bring River City: Tokyo Rumble to the Nintendo 3Ds this summer. The game continues the partnership established last year with Arc System Works, who owns the River City franchise.
Originally launched as Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun Sp: Rantou Kyousoukyoku in Japan, the game is part of a long-running series of side-scrolling RPG brawlers, sports games, and more. North Americans were first introduced to the series with River City Ransom on the Nes, with an updated take on the game arriving several years later on the Game Boy Advance. Multiple spinoff games, including volleyball and fighting games, have followed.

Yes, it’s beyond trite to be comparing a game to Dark Souls, but it’s really unavoidable when talking about Ska Studios’ Salt and Sanctuary. The husband and wife team have often paid homage to other games in the past, such as The Legend of Zelda and River City Ransom, but this time around they’ve been inspired by From Software’s popular series. This is far from a third-rate knockoff, though, as the duo have successfully adapted the punishing gameplay to a 2D plane.
Even if you’ve never enjoyed a Souls game, there is still a striking familiarity once you begin playing Salt and Sanctuary. The transition to 2D makes it surprisingly easy to pick up the basics. It largely plays how you would expect a platformer would in two dimensions, and you’ll be jumping your way through and exploring locales with general ease. It’s...

Nes brawling classic River City Ransom is heading to the Nintendo 3Ds next month. Here's a new trailer...
The full history of River City Ransom is far too convoluted to go into here, since it takes in numerous sequels and all kinds of name changes. In brief, it began with Nekketsu Kunio-Kun in 1986, a Japanese brawler about violent school kids and gangs of thugs. That game was released in edited form as Renegade elsewhere in the world.
Nes fans will remember River City Ransom, actually the third game in the Kunio series and called Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari in Japan. By turns violent and strangely cute, its mix of action and light RPG elements made it one of the most enjoyable third-party games for the Nes. A tough brawler with attitude, Taito's Renegade appeared on home computers in 1987. Ryan takes a look back...
"So you're on a train platform, when all of a sudden this gang surrounds you. Before they can do anything, you rush up to the first guy and - bam - punch him right in the face. He just stands there, totally stunned. But then this other bloke comes up behind you, and he's got a baseball bat. You back kick him, and this stuns him, too.
"Then you turn around, grab the git by his jacket, and - get this - you knee him in the balls and throw him straight over your shoulder like a trash bag. Whack! He crashes into the first guy, who's still stunned from having his nose broken, and the pair of them - wait, cos this the best bit - go flying off the edge of the train platform.

Waterloo Road co-creator Eileen Gallagher has called the axing of the school-based BBC drama "a lost opportunity".
The producer told The Daily Record that moving the show from Rochdale to Scotland in 2012 was "a game-changer for the Scottish TV industry".
"All my life I have argued for the real need Scotland has for a continuing network drama," she said. "It has never had it and this was an attempt to establish one.
"I'd hoped it would become Scotland's Holby City or EastEnders – the kind of drama which is there year in, year out. In terms of creating a critical mass of TV drama talent, you need something like that. It's a big railway sleeper.
"You can grow talent, you can keep an experienced base of crew who have work they can rely on. All of that is fundamental to create a network production hub, which Scotland should be.

Well it’s that time of year again, when the leaves begin to fall and St. Louis becomes the mecca of movie lovers everywhere with the return of the 23rd Annual St. Louis International Film Festival. Kicking off the Festival this year is St. Louis native Matt Amato’s tale of Love in River City as The Makings Of You plays out deep in the heart of the nostalgic areas of St. Louis, and the mighty riverbanks of the Mississippi. To bring Matt’s story to life, he secured Mad Men‘s own Jay R. Ferguson to play his leading man Wallis, and what a leading man he truly is, in every way, as you will soon come to find out.

The cast of River City will team up with Still Game's stars to film an exclusive sketch for this year's BBC Children in Need appeal.
The sketch will see Jack (Ford Kiernan) and Victor (Greg Hemphill) arrive in Shieldinch after winning a competition to watch filming at River City.
Viewers can expect to see some comedy moments as the pensioners interact with several members of the cast and assist with the directors.
Kiernan said: "We're obviously delighted that the two worlds of Still Game and River City are going to collide for BBC's Children in Need. It'll be a strange experience for Jack and Victor to leave a real place like Craiglang for a made-up BBC place like Shieldinch.
"We don't want to give too much away because the element of surprise is everything after all!"
