It’s a happy day in Hell for “Hazbin Hotel,” the adult animated comedy series from Vivienne Medrano, A24, and Fox Entertainment’s Bento Box Entertainment set to premiere on Prime Video in January 2024. Prime Video debuted a new clip at Nycc that teases an original song from the upcoming series along with a closer look at the voice cast.

With than less than three weeks left for countries to submit their candidates for the Best International Feature Film category of the 2024 Academy Awards, announcements are falling thick and fast.
Czech Republic and Iceland both unveiled their candidates on Tuesday.
The Czech Republic has submitted Tomáš Mašín’s drama Brothers, about five teenage boys who attempt to flee communist Czechoslovakia in 1953 with the aim of joining the U.S. Army in West Berlin.
The film follows their exploits as they cross the heavily guarded border into the East Germany, triggering an extensive hunt. Two members of the group are caught and later executed. The remaining three boys, the Mašín brothers and their injured friend Milan Paumer, make it to West Berlin, but not without consequences for their families.
Mašín, whose previous feature credits include 3 Seasons In Hell, Wilson City and Exhale, spent more than eight years working on the film. The...

In the West (and indeed by me), Ringo Lam is perhaps best known as the director of Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicles like Maximum Risk and the underrated In Hell, but like most of the Hong Kong filmmakers who started doing English language work in the ’90s and ’00s, he had a long history in action movies in his home country. He directed many contemporary action films, notably City on Fire, which Quentin Tarantino took liberal inspiration from for parts of Reservoir Dogs.
Burning Paradise, made in 1994, is Lam’s sole wuxia film. A remake of 1965’s Temple of the Red Lotus, starring the legendary Jimmy Wang Yu, it follows Fong Sai-yuk (Willie Chi Tian-Sheng), a survivor of the sacking of Shaolin Temple by the Manchu army. However, he is captured, along with a young girl, Dau Dau (Carman Lee Yeuk-Tung), who helped him and his master hide from the Manchu.

Michelle Zauner is no stranger to facing grief head-on with elation. The circumstances of her life surrounding the release of her first two albums as Japanese Breakfast are well-documented: her debut Psychopomp was recorded in the wake of her mother’s death from pancreatic cancer in 2014, and her explorations of trauma and melancholy extended onto its science fiction-inspired follow-up, Soft Sounds from Another Planet.
Yet Zauner has always sidestepped any desire to linger within pain, instead catapulting towards the possibility of imaginary futures. In live performances of Soft Sounds’ “Machinist,...

Zauner dropped the single “Be Sweet” Tuesday, featuring a hilarious self-directed video that stars Zauner and Mannequin Pussy’s Marisa Dabice as FBI agents. They work late nights, tracing maps and gripping flashlights accompanied by Eighties power-pop chords.
Jubilee will arrive two months after the release of Zauner’s upcoming memoir Crying in H Mart, which focuses on growing up Korean-American and losing her mother to cancer.

Refresh for updates: Former President Donald Trump eulogized Rush Limbaugh on Fox News today by noting, “People whether they loved him or not, they respected him.”
Apparently Trump hasn’t been keeping up with Twitter since getting booted from the platform.
“Rush Limbaugh already started a radio show in Hell,” tweeted Saturday Night Live‘s Luke Null, “and is ranting about how the devil should shut the fiery gates because all these Outsiders are ruining everything!”
Satirist Randy Rainbow offered a succinct, “Bye gurl. Amen.”
With a flood of social media posts compiling the many racist, homophobic, misogynistic and just plain cruel comments made by the right-wing radio host over the years, his supporters certainly made their voices heard too.

As “Peninsula”, his sequel to the smash-hit “Train to Busan”, gets ready for a Summer 2020 release, it has been announced that director Yeon Sang-ho will be spearheading an adaption of his own webtoon “Hell” for a Netflix original horror series titled “Hellbound”.
In “Hellbound”, supernatural beings appear out of nowhere to condemn people to hell. It doesn’t matter whether these events are a blessing or a curse: a new religious group is interpreting them all as the will of the divine. What unfolds through this predicament is an intense and highly-charged story about people who must survive under conditions of utter social chaos. The story was originally published as a webtoon, titled “Hell” or 지옥 in Korean, and has garnered a great deal of attention and acclaim. As a Netflix original series, “Hellbound” will take on a new form through the collaborative work of director Yeon Sang-ho and illustrator Choi Gyu-seok,...

Yeon Sang-ho’s standout K-horror entry “Train to Busan” from 2016 balances unexpected, bloody bursts of comedy with a nail-shredding “Snowpiercer”-esque train ride through a zombie apocalypse. Now, the South Korean auteur is set to scare up audiences again with his next project, a supernatural horror show for Netflix titled “Hellbound.”
As reported by Screen Daily, Yeon will direct the series, based on the Korean K-horror web cartoon “Hell.” Yeon will work on the script with illustrator Choi Gyu-seok, an artist known for the webtoon “Songgot” in Korea, which was adapted into a TV drama in 2015. Produced by Lezhin Studio, “Hellbound” will tell a similarly chaotic horror story akin to “Train to Busan.” The Netflix series will be set in a society under chaos after a pack of supernatural beings show up to start condemning people to hell. Up rises a new religious group that believes these being are sent from god.

Crooks and lawyers this week on Trailers From Hell. What’s the difference, you may ask? Lawyers drink better wine. Let’s see if we can find a good match for this week’s featured flicks.
2007’s Michael Clayton was nominated for seven Oscars, and it would have been eight had there been a category for Worst Title. Lawyer Clayton cleans up his clients’ messes, referring to himself as a janitor. He is played by George Clooney, who looks like he knows his way around a wine list but does not look anything like a janitor. In the wine biz, a lawyer would handle permits, labels, sales and acquisitions – not exactly the stuff of cinematic legend.
Since it takes so much scratch to buy a winery, mostly lawyers and doctors retire to vineyards. Let’s drink to Law Estate Winery of Paso Robles, owned by Don and Susie Law. Their...

Yesterday saw a deluge of precursor results hit the Oscar race, including one of the biggest Guilds chiming in. Below, we’ll run down the results of the various shows, though obviously we already covered DGA in a previous post. Cinematographer Roger Deakins won the top prize Saturday night at the 34th annual Asc Awards (at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland) for his bravura camera work on “1917,” the continuous-shot, World War I extravaganza, directed by Sam Mendes.
Deakins beat Phedon Papamichael (“Ford v Ferrari”), Rodrigo Prieto (“The Irishman”), Robert Richardson (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), and Lawrence Sher (“Joker”). The latter three are Oscar-nominated with Deakins. The fifth nominee, Jarin Blaschke (“The Lighthouse”), earned the Asc Spotlight Award for his gritty, Gothic-looking black-and-white cinematography.
Additionally, Fejmi Daut and Samir Ljuma took the Asc Documentary category for “Honeyland.”
Given the Best Picture momentum and universal acclaim for the technical feat, Deakins moves a step closer to his second Oscar. He finally landed his first with “Blade Runner 2049″ after 14 Academy Award nominations. Deakins leads the Asc with five wins.

Hong Kong-born action director Ringo Lam, who directed the influential crime film “City on Fire,” has died.
Hong Kong media outlets reported the director, who was born Lin Lingdong, was found unresponsive in bed on Saturday by his wife. He was 63.
The 1986 “City on Fire” is considered a landmark film about Hong Kong triads, and won best director at the Hong Kong Film Awards. It was a major influence on Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs.” Lam followed that film up with “Prison on Fire” and “School on Fire.”
“Tarantino has never tried to hide his love for ’70s cinema, and this is part of what makes his take on ‘City on Fire’ so interesting,” wrote IndieWire in an explanation of Tarantino’s influences.
With several “Reservoir Dogs” shots recalling “City on Fire,” such as the image of four men in black suits and a man shooting a cop with with two guns,...

Ringo Lam, the Hong Kong director that worked on such projects as the 1987 film “City on Fire,” was found dead Saturday morning, according to the Hong Kong’s Apple Daily. Lam was 63.
An unresponsive Lam was found in bed by his wife, Apple Daily reported on Saturday. After discovering the body, she called an ambulance, but by the time it arrived, Lam had already passed. A cause of death has not been announced, but no foul play is suspected.
Born in Hong Kong in the mid 1950s, Lam originally aspired to be an actor, but eventually shifted his focus to working behind the camera and moved to Canada to study film.

Saoirse Ronan’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live” last weekend was well received, at least on this side of the Atlantic. Some back home were unimpressed with a sketch in which the Irish actress plays an Aer Lingus flight attendant, regarding the bit — which featured heavy accents, several references to potatoes, and lots and lots of dogs — as relying too much on stereotypes. During an appearance on “The Late Late Show,” the “Lady Bird” star responded.

Christmas and martial arts movies? They rarely crossover. But amazing fights in the snow? Now we're in business...
I love martial arts movies and I love Christmas so I'm kinda sad that the two have never really come together (Kung Fu Panda Holiday doesn't count). I'd hoped to find at least one good example to write about, as we move into the festive period, but I guess since most martial arts films come from Buddhist countries and Christmas is a Christian holiday, I was destined for disappointment.
I did briefly consider making one up with the aid of Photoshop, but wasn't sure I could get away with it so, alas, The 25th Advent Chamber Of Shaolin is not to be. For what it's worth, I'd got as far as an apprentice monk named Ho, fighting his way through 25 'doors' of a giant temple designed to resemble an advent calendar.

Whose Episode Is It?
“Time for After” has probably the most important plot development in Season 8 since the premiere, so why does it feel like such a shrug? It certainly doesn’t help that the majority of the episode is devoted to reiterating a bunch of stuff we already know about Eugene, a character that’s truly emblematic of the show’s diminishing returns. The real meat of the story is Daryl and Tara’s successful operation to upend Rick’s big plan and crush the Saviors in one fell swoop, casualties be damned, but it’s given about 12 minutes of screen time and the debate of its merits might be the most cursory discussion this show’s ever featured, which is saying something.

“Every Frame a Painting,” a YouTube channel which attracted many cinephiles by focusing on the artistry of cinema, has ended. Creator and narrator Tony Zhou, alongside his fellow “Frame” writer and editor Taylor Ramos, published a “Postmortem” for the show on Dec. 2, alongside a script for a never-completed final video which was a thoughtful peek behind the curtain of the artists’ workflow.
“Every Frame a Painting is officially dead. Nothing sinister; we just decided to end it, rather than keep on making stuff. The existing videos will, of course, remain online. But there won’t be any new ones,” reads the introduction to the script.
Near the beginning of the script itself, Ramos outlines why the duo have stopped producing videos. “In the past year, we’ve both started new jobs and taken on other freelance work.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Preacher” Season 2, Episode 13, “The End of the Road.”]
Well, any season of television that had an out-of-work actor getting shot for answering the wrong casting call or an angel begging to be released from an immortal coil or an oppressive montage of a teenager shooting off half her head in a tragic suicide attempt was not going to have a happy ending. Though “Preacher” Season 2 did have its share of tiny moments of levity amidst the heavy considerations of the nature of God, this was always going to be season where the easiest answer would be that there are never any satisfying easy answers.
With “The End of the Road,” “Preacher” offers up a mixed-bag ending, not so much a definitive stamp on a season as a continuation of its by-design muddiness. A whole batch of episodes spent pondering the nature and whereabouts of God was destined for an untidy resolution, if one ever came at all. Instead,...

Neil Marshall’s Hellboy reboot, Rise Of The Blood Queen, has found its sanguinary monarch, with Deadline reporting that The Fifth Element and Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich is in final talks to join the film as its main villain. Jovovich will play opposite David Harbour as Hellboy himself, and Ian McShane as his father figure/mentor, Professor Broom (Bruttenholm in the original comics).
Plot details about the reboot are being kept quiet, but it’s worth noting that, in the Hellboy comics, the Blood Queen is a major antagonist for Hellboy, being the villain who’s primarily responsible for his relocation to the afterlife in Hellboy In Hell. And it’s not like Jovovich isn’t one of Hollywood’s most experienced cinematic demon hunters, even if her usual prey aren’t quite so gruffly good-natured as ol’ Big Red.

HBO is TV's unofficial king of summer, with the return of water-cooler dominator Game of Thrones, a deep-dive portrait of twin musical innovators Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine and Andy Samberg doing for professional cycling what he did for tennis. There's plenty to peruse beyond premium cable, of course, as the networks ready sci-fi–inflected procedurals and FX unveils an ambitious new period drama set in the cradle of crack cocaine. Marvel? DC? They have their moments, but how about Shogun Assassin, and in turn, the Lone Wolf & Cub movies?
Like most western viewers, I came to the Lone Wolf & Cub series via Shogun Assassin – a recut/mash-up of the first two movies, trimmed to 90 minutes and dubbed into English by a pair of enterprising Andy Warhol acolytes. It was one of the original 'video nasties' in the UK, banned for years, so highly desirable to a kid like me. And it didn’t disappoint. In fact, it was probably the goriest movie on the list.
While it may seem criminal now to butcher a pair of bona fide Japanese classics and completely change their meaning and tone, Shogun Assassin got away with it by being so vibrant and hyperactive. The inappropriate score is a joyful synthesiser meltdown and the spirited dub goes full-pelt, even if what they...

Okay, we’ll admit, today’s been a little bit out of control with all the Alien: Covenant coverage. It’s a big film that fans are hoping will be the Alien prequel we’ve all been hoping for, and we have to say, we’re kind of feeling the same way. Coming off the momentum of Scott’s latest film, The Martian, this may very well be the best time for him to hop back onto the Alien train and complete the mythology he started back in 1979.
Up until last night, we had a few photos, a short teaser, and a prologue video — which is quite a bit, given the film isn’t due until this May. Regardless, the studio went ahead and dropped a new trailer anyway, and we have to say, it is all sorts of fantastic. The first part of the trailer does a great job of laying out the characters,...

Lrm Online was allowed to visit Fox Studios Australia this past June where Ridely Scott was filming his latest chapter in the Alien series, Alien: Covenant. With limited time we were able to catch up with him while he was in between takes. Guided into a dimly lit stage we came across a massive set which consist of large heads which look like they are carved from stone. These large heads are know as the engineers or the elders that once had a civilization on this planet. Here is what he had to say about his latest film.
What's with all the heads?
Ridley Scott: If you ask me they were a people who were superior. These were probably the ten apostles, the wise men.
We hear you're going back to horror with this film?
Scott: Well, yeah. Alien was kind of a posh horror film.

There are never happy endings in Alien movies. Sad, but true. No matter how smart or altruistic a character is, they’re bound to bite the dust sooner or later — usually in a violent and gory fashion. Even Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley met an especially horrific fate. As she descended into a lava pit below, an alien burst from her stomach, only to be engulfed by flames almost immediately. It was a fitting end for a character who had gone through hell several times up until that point.
So despite the fact that Noomi Rapace’s Elizabeth Shaw managed to live through the horrors in Prometheus, it seemed inevitable that she’d meet her maker in Alien: Covenant. There are a few pieces of evidence that seem to support this. First, we’ve heard from those familiar to earlier drafts of the script that she only makes it about ten...

Japanese director Sion Sono is one of the most prolific filmmakers working today, having released five films last year, including “Shinjuku Swan,” a live action adaptation of the popular manga series by the same name. The film followed Tatsuhiko (Gou Ayano), an adult entertainment talent scout working in the red light district of Tokyo. It has yet to receive a release in the United States, but Sono has already followed it up with a sequel, which follows Tatsuhiko as he clashes CEO Masaki Taki (Tadanobu Asano). The sequel stars Alice Hirose, Kippei Shiina, Yusuke Iseya, Motoki Fukami, Nobuaki Kaneko, Yu Yamada, Yusuke Kamiji, Maryjun Takahashi, Jun kaname, Hideo Nakano and Takashi Sasano. Last Week’S Review: Chapter 7 Lets The Bodies Hit The Floor
Fact vs. Fiction
At one point during “Chapter 8,” Lee speculates that the footage that makes up “Return to Roanoke” could be used against any of the participants. As she tells Audrey, “If the wrong people get that footage, the only thing the world will see is the image of you caving in an old woman’s head with a hammer.” Whoever has the footage has the power to shape it as they see fit. “Reality” is what one makes of it in the editing room.
So here’s the question: Who’s airing “Return to Roanoke”? Someone found the footage and cut it together. Someone provided that title card in “Chapter 6” telling us only one person made it out of Roanoke alive. And the “Three Days In Hell” bumpers suggest some level of professionalism, so you might guess it...

Espn’s 30 for 30 has emerged as a documentary series of unparalleled quality; its films about sad, triumphant, and offbeat sports stories have allowed it to earn praise and pick up multiple awards. Like any great show, it is a ripe target for parody, and Go90 has capitalized on that opportunity. The mobile video platform is the home of The 5th Quarter, a comedy series that spoofs 30 for 30.
Anyone who has watched the hysterically funny HBO mockumentary Seven Days In Hell will know exactly the sort of comedy they should expect from The 5th Quarter. The Go90 series’ combination of absurd situations and deadpan delivery is an amusing one, and the first episode, which arrived on November 2nd, is a winner. It stars Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers as Clif Cliff, a seven-year-old boy who leads a youth squad to glory before he is disqualified when it is discovered he is actually 32-years-old.

At this year's New York Comic-Con, it was revealed that Sigourney Weaver will play the villain in The Defenders. As of right now, we have no idea which role she's taking on (though we do have some theories), but this is by far one of the most exciting additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. During a new interview, Daredevil's Charlie Cox was asked to weigh in on what she'll bring to the table. It goes without saying that the British actor is obviously very excited to work with the Alien star! "You know, when she came on stage with us at New York Comic Con, I wanted to say, 'In Hell's Kitchen, no one hears you scream.' I don't think it gets better than Sigourney Weaver. I think we are immensely lucky to have her. It's a testament to shows like Daredevil and Luke Cage and Jessica Jones.
