It’s almost September folks! The air is filled with buzz about potential Academy Award contenders, what’s hitting and missing (or going to hit/miss) at the various fall film festivals, and other such signs of the end of the summer. I’m getting a slight jump on this monthly post and putting it out in the middle of the week, since frankly, the end of August has been a wasteland. Next month looks more promising though, especially in a few key spots. Take a look below for the month’s top picks, as always, and sit tight for more on most, if not all, of them over the next 30 days or so… Here now are September’s best cinematic bets: 10. Rebel in the Rye – A biopic of J.D. Salinger should have been a slam dunk Oscar player. Unfortunately, this flick from Danny Strong just never kicks it into gear.

There’s a fight sequence almost two thirds of the way through Atomic Blonde that I’m convinced is going to go down as an all time classic. It will rock your socks, plain and simple. The whole movie actually is pretty strong when it comes to action sequences. That being said, the real selling point is Charlize Theron, who turns in her most kick ass performance to date. She’s truly spectacular here, showing that what she did in Mad Max: Fury Road (we can pretend things like Aeon Flux never happened) wasn’t a one off. This week, the film hits theaters and should delight those of you who wish more women would get to kick some ass. Trust me, ass is kicked here, to say the least. Discussing the plot of this movie is kind of dumb, since it makes no sense, but here goes nothing. Told in flashbacks,...

The International Emmy Awards held their 44th ceremony last night at the New York Hilton — the same venue that hosted Donald Trump’s victory party on Election Night. Host Alan Cumming pointed out that odd coincidence at the beginning of the festivities: “Oh, how quickly darkness and despair can fall,” he said. “I feel it is my moral obligation to inform you: This hall was the venue for one of the darkest, most destructive moments in our history.” Not exactly the most cheerful note to open an awards gala on, but alas. With Sundance winding down, there wasn't much in the way of big specialized news. This week's openers include a release in over 1,000 theaters with independent roots ("Jane Got a Gun"), a combined gross for compilations of this year's Oscar nominated shorts, and a Tugg fan-based release outside normal distribution channels ("Lazer Team"). The new conventional foreign release, "Rabin: The Last Day," landed some response at one top Manhattan theater. Under the radar but still impressive is the second weekend for "Ip Man 3," by far the biggest draw yet in this cult appeal series from Hong Kong. The bulk of specialized-related business as usual for this time of year is Oscar related, as distributors extend long-running product, with little new in the way of films. Sony Pictures Classics' "The Lady in the Van" leads the way among these, but it is the exception that proves the rule, as its release...

However, since not every show can have the social media presence of The Bachelor, we wanted to talk about some shows not getting as much attention. However, since not every show can have the social media presence of The Bachelor, we wanted to talk about some shows not getting as much attention. First up, NBC’s quirky, hilarious workplace comedy Superstore. If you haven’t heard of the series until now, here’s the gist: It’s a workplace comedy like The Office, or Parks and Recreation, but set in a big-box retail store like Wal-Mart. Simple enough, right? Now, based on ratings data, I wouldn’t even necessarily classify Superstore as “under the radar”. Last night’s new episode rated a respectable 1.6

This week the Criterion Collection released Giuseppe De Santis’s 1949 film, Bitter Rice.
Both a socially conscious look at the hardships endured by underpaid field workers and a melodrama tinged with sex and violence, this early smash for producer extraordinaire Dino De Laurentiis and director Giuseppe De Santis is neorealism with a heaping dose of pulp.
Bitter Rice is currently available to stream on Hulu Plus. Order the Blu-ray from Amazon.

The release will be available for purchase on December 8 but We Are Movie Geeks has three copies of the Blu-ray to give away in advance.
On the edge of a crumbling city, 11-year-old Alexander (Jeremy Chabriel) lives in a sequestered commune, alongside other children, their mothers, and charismatic leader, Gregori (Vincent Cassel). Gregori teaches the children how to raise livestock, grow vegetables, work as a community – and how to kill. As Alexander nears his first job as an assassin, he begins to question the ways of the commune, particularly Gregori’s quiet but overpowering influence. Threatened by Alexander’s increasing unwillingness to fall in line, Gregori’s behavior turns erratic and adversarial toward the child he once considered a son. Big Brother, you’re such a tease.
Rather than kick off the summer staple’s 16th season with an introduction of all 16 houseguests, CBS instead chose to divide the premiere into two nights, dedicating each hour to eight contestants at a time.
But by the end of the hour, it seems that only meeting half of this summer’s characters was for the best, as the first batch may have been one of the loudest and wackiest in Bb history. (Not to be confused with the most bigoted and discriminatory group, a title that last year’s cast continues to hold.

The Apes movies practically defined the law of diminishing returns. Franklin J Schaffner’s seminal science-fiction, Planet of The Apes was one of the biggest hits of 1968. An ingenious adaptation of Pierre Boule’s novel, it won an Oscar for John Chambers’ iconic make-up effects and took the ‘Twist Ending’ to a new level, possibly never surpassed.
Despite the colossal box office returns of its predecessor, Beneath The Planet of The Apes had its budget halved – a penny-pinching exercise that would continue throughout the series. By the time of Conquest of The Planet of The Apes, allegory had taken over spectacle, and the films became a running commentary on racial oppression and the contemporary 1970s actions of the Black Panther movement. Cleverly, the five original Ape movies form a long circular narrative, with the time-travelling chimpanzees of Escape From The Planet of The Apes, giving birth to a son whose...

When audiences watch a movie, they are watching the work of hundreds of people who have devoted a significant portion of their lives to put the product together. In the end though, everyone knows the movie stars, and a lot of people know the directors, but how many people know and appreciate the behind the scenes people who contribute immeasurably to the magic of cinema?
What about the composers, the make-up artists, and the cinematographers who are arguably more important to a film’s success than the people who end up reaping most of the benefits?

This week at the movies, Peter Travers highlights Hollywood's latest "based on a true story" Oscar grab, Dallas Buyers Club. Set in the 1980s, the film stars Matthew McConaughey as Ron Woodroof, a homophobic electrician with a penchant for boozing and philandering. But after sleeping with a drug user, he contracts HIV. Ostracized by his friends and given 30 days to live, his life falls to pieces.

Last night's NCIS, the first without Ziva in Season 11, was fast-paced and interesting, which didn't come as a surprise to its fan base. Can it keep up the quality in the absence of such a key player?
Follow the link for our weekly NCIS review to weigh in on all things "Under the Radar."
Looking ahead to next week's episode, Gibbs and McGee travel to Afghanistan when a murder case leads them to an Afghan women's shelter that Mike Franks secretly supported for years.
Muse Watson, as Gibbs' legendary late mentor Mike, makes yet another appearance.

The first NCIS episode without Ziva was fast-paced and still interesting, which is hardly surprising, given the quality of writing for this show.
"Under the Radar" introduced us to a spitfire of an agent in the person of Vera Strickland (played by Roma Maffia Nip/Tuck fame), who was a former partner of Mike Franks. She assisted the team in the investigation of a Navy Lieutenant who was planning to kill his air school classmates out of spite and revenge because he washed out of the running for Navy flight competency.
Strickland's charm came in two parts: her ability and willingness to shoot from the hip - loudly - and her ability to make Gibbs laugh. That last one was startling, as we're not used to seeing the all-knowing impatient agent even grin very much.
I think her presence in this episode - which will likely be her only appearance...

Ziva has left the building. (Or, if you want to get technical, she never returned to the building.)
But even though we’ve seen the last of Cote de Pablo for the foreseeable future, there’s plenty of action to come on NCIS, according to executive producer Gary Glasberg. Part of it, he says, will be seen in tonight’s episode, which he’ll give you scoop on in our interview below, among many other things…

NCIS fans can all take a breather now that the tear-jerking farewell of Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) is behind us, but just as we can’t quite shake the memory of the beloved character, we’ll see our NCIS team react in much the same way in this evening’s episode, “Under The Radar.”
Executive Producer and showrunner Gary Glasberg explained to me yesterday how they went about crafting the first episode minus Ziva, what emotionally might be coming for Gibbs and he supplied some intel on the just-announced NCIS spinoff that will be set in New Orleans.
TV Fanatic: Were there also challenges with "Under the Radar" because it’s the first Ziva-less episode? How much do you focus on it, how much you don’t? She’s still very present in the episode.
Gary Glasberg: Well, she continues to be, I guess, present is a good way of putting it.

As CBS’ NCIS continues its 11th season (tonight at 8/7c), the tweaked opening credits may lack a certain “kick,” but the song remains the same, as Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his team of agents — minus Cote de Pablo‘s Ziva David — go about doing what they do best. Showrunner Gary Glasberg shared with TVLine a look at certain reactions to the squad room shake-up and previewed new stories to come. Plus: an exclusive peek at a bittersweet Abby/McGee moment.

And that's that. NCIS and Cote de Pablo have parted ways.
On last night's episode (see our NCIS review), the Tony and Ziva "moment" finally happened, albeit in a bittersweet way as he boarded a plane back to the U.S. while she stayed in Israel shortly thereafter.
Believable and sad, it closed out her chapter on a positive note, leaving the door ajar for a possible return down the line as Ziva's exit from the team was done in a open-ended and non-incendiary way.
For now, though, she is gone. Where does that leave the team?
Looking ahead to next week, NCIS must rely on Twitter in a case involving a missing Navy Lieutenant. Meanwhile, McGee misplaces his badge but withholds information from Gibbs and the authorities.
Roma Maffia guest stars as NCIS Special Agent Vera Strickland.

The NCIS is going to have to rely on Twitter for a case involving a missing Navy Lieutenant. ★★★★☆ The term 'musical' these days often only seems to refer to films based on West End shows or pop groups' greatest hits. So, when How Do You Write a Joe Schermann Song (2012) premièred at the Raindance Film Festival last year, this original musical made a real impression (on those who saw it, at least). It eventually won the festival's top award - enough to earn it a spot in our new 'Under the Radar' roster, as the film was recently released on video on-demand. A knowing musical about writing musicals, Gary King's film follows Joe Schermann (played by himself) as he struggles to compose an off-Broadway show.

Blue Ivy is getting so big! Queen Bey graced the Brooklyn, N.Y. streets with her presence on March 24, while out grabbing lunch with her gorgeous, growing daughter — super adorable!
If there’s any duo that could stop traffic it’d be Beyonce Knowles, 31, and 1-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter. The pair did just that while out and about in Brooklyn on March 24 leaving a restaurant where they stopped for a lunch date. Fans snapped photos of the superstar and baby during their excursion, catching shots showing how big Blue Ivy is getting!
