"Supersaturation freezes the crystal in an instant. So it is with the drama, like the egg at the fingertips of the naked magician, come out of nothing, of everywhere. All around, characters and actions submissively fall into order. Toward the future lies a false track which in its turn will undergo the surprising intersection with the absolute. Toward the past, the idyll, read backwards, is tragedy. The episodes each find their place, in order, deduced, bound together, comprehensible, understood. Exactly – the actors intimate – that’s why we were there. As in the beautiful syntax of a latin sentence, from the final verb, you come back to the subject."
–Jean Epstein, 1927
Motion pictures have the power to render death as a conscious state. And words like “transcendentalism” barely scratch the surface here. A more apposite term—the one Jean Epstein nuanced in his film theory, “photogenie” (“created by light”)—brings ethics into play.

The Fall of the House of Usher
Directed by Jean Epstein
Written by Jean Epstein, Luis Buñuel, and Edgar Allen Poe
France, 1928
It’s hard to imagine that the house of Usher actually acts as a “house”. There’s very little in terms of warm, domestic quality about it: the halls are long and foreboding, the rooms are empty and grand, and it doesn’t seem accustomed to guests. Rather, its ornate decorations and intense lighting suggest something more of an Arthurian castle, full of fairy-tale supernatural qualities lurking in its grounds. Villagers shy away and whisper to themselves when someone utters the name “Usher”; a lone dog runs away at the property’s perimeter — the house’s haunted aura pervades anything that even dares think about it.
An unnamed visitor rides to this doomed estate of the demented Usher for little explained reason (not uncommon for the actions from...

Far too often we throw around the phrase "horror icon" or "horror legend"; however, there is no disputing the fact that Vincent Price absolutely deserves to be described with both of those handles. And today, to celebrate Scream Factory's launch of The Vincent Price Collection (review), we count down our Top 10 Vincent Price Films.
Well known to mainstream, non-horror fans as the voice in the legendary Michael Jackson song "Thriller," Vincent Price was indeed the face of horror for quite some time. He was incredibly chilling with a voice that simply oozed horror. And it's for those enviable traits, and the fact that he spent so much of his life dedicated to the horror genre, that we honor Vincent Price with his own personal Top 10 list!
He has just under 200 acting credits to his name, then over 175 more instances where he appeared as himself. Price's credits read like a...

While we’e been covering many of the Scream Factory releases for our Us readers, Arrow Video has been releasing horror classics in the UK for a while now and they recently announced their next set of Blu-ray releases. Take a look at release details, cover art, and bonus features for The Fall of the House of Usher, Lifeforce, Deranged, and Squirm. We’ve also included details for Motel Hell, which we covered earlier this week.
Motel Hell: “It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent fritters!” cackle the brother-and-sister team behind the finest smoked meats in the county. They also run the friendly Motel Hello (the ‘o’ in the neon sign sometimes goes on the blink), and no matter how many times you’ve seen Psycho or The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, you can be sure that everything will be perfectly above board here as Vincent...

It is the commonplace fate of British cinema's more visionary talents to end their careers marginalised and even mocked. This was certainly what happened to Ken Russell, who has died aged 84. In his latter years, with his shock of white hair and his red face, the director cut a cantankerous and slightly buffoonish figure. He asked for money for interviews. His greatest work wasn't much in circulation. Those who knew him from such lesser efforts as The Fall Of The Louse Of Usher (2002), his eccentric and low-budget Edgar Allan Poe adaptation, or for his Cliff Richard and Sara Brightman videos, were probably baffled that he had such a glowing reputation.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center will again be offering its popular Scary Movies Film Series. And it’s not just any scary movies they’ll be showing. They’ve got classics, and they’ve got New York City premieres. They’ve even got Stuart Gordon’s live theater presentation of Nevermore starring Jeffrey Combs accompanying the screening of The Black Cat.
All right New Yorkers, check this out ... from October 27 to 31 Lincoln Center will present an ass-load of horror. Unfortunately, brevity is not one of their strong points so I’m going to sign off here and turn it over to the good folks of Lincoln Center to give you all the film titles and schedule. With NYC premieres of Ben Wheatley’s Kill List and Ti West’s The Innkeepers, along with a ton of other great titles, this is the film festival you don’t want to miss.

For this writer, if I ever wanted to be alive during another era of filmmaking, my first choice would most definitely be the 1960s. During that time, some of the most fascinating genre work was being created from the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, Herschell Gordon Lewis, the Hammer House of Horror, George A. Romero, and of course legendary writer/director/producer Roger Corman.
Before the 60s, Corman established himself as an independent maverick of film with his work on films like Swamp Women, The Wasp Woman and A Bucket of Blood , but it’s safe to say that it wasn’t until the director and producer began collaborating with Vincent Price that his directorial work in the horror genre was elevated to an entirely new level.

In the early 1907′s Vincent Price’s career was at a high point. The Doctor Phibes films were unexpected hits. How would he capitalize on these? In 1973 he took on a role in a film with a similar plot structure. In fact, many fright film fans consider Theatre Of Blood an unofficial finale in a Phibes trilogy. Produced by United Artists rather then American International Blood differed from the Phibes film in that it was set in modern times and boasted one of the most prestigious casts that Price ever worked with. Price portrays Edward Lionheart , a stage actor thought to be dead , who returns to murder the critics that denied him a thespian award. Many of...

The script consists of four speaking roles: Roderick Usher (O'Rear), Madeline Usher (Friedericy), the family Doctor (Billingsley), and the Narrator (Sorbo), who is an un-named childhood friend of Roderick. The audio drama has the same feel and style of classic old time radio shows.

When I first read Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles in high school, it blew my mind. This time I read it, and I was only mildly interested. The ideas weren't enriched by years of life experience so much as became overwrought. The book consists of several short stories (some were previously published in magazines, etc.) that give different perspectives of life on Mars, from Martians to Earth men. Men first come to Mars to explore, and then to flee the violence on Earth, and then leave because a great war has broken out on Earth (solidarity, I guess).
Although some of my lackluster second reading has to do with how dated I found the book this time. Obviously the story ("Way in the Middle of the Air") involving all the black people in the South fleeing oppressive white bosses is dated in the 40s-era it was originally written. But...

Filmmaker Curtis Harrington: 1926-2007.
Our Friend Curtis Harrington
by Jon Zelazny
Curtis Harrington was born in Los Angeles in 1926. He made short films as a teenager, graduated from USC, and began his Hollywood career in the 1950’s. By the end of the decade, he was directing: independent films, studio pictures, made-for-tv movies, and episodic TV. He completed his last short film in 2002, and died in 2007 at the age of 80.
I knew Curtis well in his final years, as did writer-producer Dennis Bartok, the former head programmer of L.A.’s famed American Cinematheque.
Dennis Bartok: I think the most interesting aspect of Curtis’s career is that he was really the only filmmaker to successfully transition from the avant-garde scene of the late 1940’s to directing Hollywood feature films. And when you see how distinctive his movies are, you wish he could’ve made more… but when you...

After reading Tim Curran's Resurrection, I simply had to interview him. I Really loved his book, even at 666 pages (yep, you read that right – 666). Curran is a wonderful storyteller who really should be unleashed upon the general horror reading public sooner rather than later.
Read on for an in-depth look into the beautifully twisted mind of Tim Curran.

Coffins came crashing through picture windows. Cadavers were deposited on porches and in trees, tombstones ended up in front yards. The second round of kaleidoscope presented by AceShowbiz reviews occurrences in showbiz from April to June 2009. In between times, the movie business witnessed the triumph of hit vampire drama movie "Twilight" at MTV Movie Awards, while the TV industry saw Kris Allen winning the "American Idol" title during the show's eight season. Music, meanwhile, welcomed back white rapper Eminem at Billboard Hot 200 after 5 years hiatus. Above all, one great celebrity that Hollywood has ever had, Michael Jackson, stole the headlines with his sudden death.
Birth, marriage, divorce, legal problem, and scandal were still the major issues during the second quarter of 2009. Hush hush romance, moreover, also played a role on the wheel. Above all, the death of some superstars managed to grab media headlines for quite sometime. Hollywood mourned the loss of some of its icons, which legacy takes ten or hundred years to recreate.

Hollywood loves Edgar Allen Poe, and they love his story “The Fall of the House of Usher.” They love it so much that they’re going to make yet again, despite the story having a silver screen legacy that spans more than 10 variant adaptations. On the heels of a new Poe-inspired “Tell-Tale Heart” movie starring Josh Lucas, the latest adaptation of “The House of Usher” will be shot in 3-D bearing a simplified title: “The Ushers.”

Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale The Fall Of The House Of Usher is getting the update treatment as The Ushers, courtesy of indie banner Green Knight Ventures. The cast has a very British look with Claire Forlani, Dougray Scott and Rufus Sewell are attached to appear in a modern-day updating of the classic Gothic short story.Poe's 1839 tale is set in the cobweb-shrouded ancestral home of the Roderick Usher, who is haunted by the lingering presence of his recently-buried sister. The Ushers will see the setting shift to modern-day Martha's Vineyard, where the Ushers are grown-up siblings who feel trapped by their long-time home and bring in a real-estate broker to help them resolve their situation.Stephen Kay, who directed Stallone's less-than-brilliant Get Carter remake, will helm from a script by Gian Marco Masoni.Poe's classic short story has already been treated to an almost-as-classic 1960 Roger Corman...

Dougray Scott and his wife Claire Forlani will star in a contemporary adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's classic story "The Fall of the House of Usher." It will be called The Ushers and will be shot in 3-D, with Stephen Kay (The Shield) directing. The film will follow a brother and sister who have lived in a house in Martha's Vineyard for a long time but have since begun to feel trapped there. Wow, Dougray Scott might be the article subject that depresses me the most. He tied up...

Indie producer Green Knight Ventures will film a contemporary adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher". The film will star Dougray Scott (Ever After), his real life wife Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black) and Rufus Sewell (The Illusionist.) When I read that Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" would be made into a film I was intrigued. We're talking claustrophobic old house, possible live burial, haunting, insanity, and a family curse. Yes, it has it all. But then, alas, I read it will be a contemporary version set in Martha's Vineyard, titled The Ushers which unfortunately makes me think of old ladies dressed in black with white doily collars guiding theater goers to their seats at Broadway shows. The Ushers, brother and sister, Roderick and Madeline live in the family manse which is suffering from some serious physical decay. Think Grey Gardens without Big and Little Edie. An...

Despite the fact that two adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher have been produced in the past three years, indie production company Green Knight Ventures seems convinced that they’ve got a fresh approach to the classic tale.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Claire Forlani, Dougray Scott (both pictured), and Rufus Sewell will star in The Ushers, a 3D horror flick that follows a grown brother and sister who have lived in the same Martha's Vineyard house for a long time but begin to feel trapped there, and who then bring in a real estate broker to help them resolve their crisis.
The premise may sound a bit horror-shy in these early stages, and the 3D gimmick is already beginning to feel stale, but we’ll keep you updated with the latest as soon as we get it.

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- Gary Graver, a cinematographer who worked with Orson Welles in the final years of the late director's life and fought for decades to see Welles' final film finished and released, has died.
Graver died at his home in Rancho Mirage on Thursday, according to Jillian Kesner-Graver, his wife of 25 years. He was 68.
He was Welles' director of photography on the films F Is for Fake, Filming Othello, It's All True, and The Other Side of the Wind, a movie Welles left unfinished at his death in 1985 and which Graver unsuccessfully tried to bring to the screen until his own death.
"He was a maverick cameraman who could do anything," said Curtis Harrington, a director who made the 2002 film Usher with Graver. "He also was very close to Orson, who recognized his wonderful qualities as a human being."
When Welles died, he left only about 40 minutes of edited footage of Wind, a film about a gifted director's artistic decline that he had worked on for 15 years. It starred fellow directors John Huston and Peter Bogdanovich.
