Producer David Susskind was very dissatisfied with this abbreviated adaptation of the famous Graham Greene novel, and determined to do it again. This version was taken from a stage play based on the book, but when Susskind produced his second attempt, in 1961, he ensured the script went back to the original. The 1961 version was the year's most lavish American TV drama, with an all-star cast led by Laurence Olivier.
