Your next stop at the Universal Studios Hollywood tour is about to get a tune-up.
The "Fast & Furious - Supercharged" backlot tour will open on June 25, joining "Despicable Me Minion Mayhem," "Jurassic Park - The Ride," "Shrek 4-d," and other attractions. The tour experience will feature a new story that's not from any of the previous "Fast and Furious" movies, along with stars Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, and Luke Evans. It will be a three-dimensional ride with images projected in 3D on an enormous 360-degree screen, which sounds like a dizzying proposition indeed.
Check out a teaser for the attraction below. "Furious 7" opens on April 3.

It looks like the world is getting ready for Penguin Madness 2.0. It all started, of course, in 2005/2006 with the release of March of the Penguins, Madagascar and Happy Feet, but now the flightless birds are making a serious comeback. In addition to Mr. Popper's Penguins dropping a few months back and making a substantial chunk of change at the international box office, Happy Feet 2 is set to drop in November and now a Madagascar spin-off focusing on their penguin characters has found its director. THR reports that Simon J. Smith, director of the short Shrek 4-d and co-director of the Jerry Seinfeld-starring Bee Movie, has been hired by Dreamworks Animation to direct the untitled project. The film is not the first time the penguins have been thrust into the spotlight, as the scene-stealers have their own show on Nickelodeon called The Penguins of Madagascar, and multiple direct-to-dvd releases. DreamWorks Animation has tapped Bee Movie diector Simon Smith, to direct the untitled Madagascar spin-off starring the penguins. THR also reports that Lara Breay (Megamind) has come on board to produce. The project was put on the fast-track in March when Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, were hired to write the script focusing on "the paramilitary parables of plucky penguins Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico."
The project is still in the early stages, so no one has been cast yet. Smith got his start as a Dwa animator who rose through the ranks. He served as Head of Layout on Antz and Shrek, and a layout consultant on Shrek 2 before directing Shrek 4-d for Universal Studios theme park. He also directed two video shorts that were DVD extras on Dwa releases: the Shrek-themed short Far Far Away Idol and Megamind: The Button of Doom.

[1] Don't expect to see popular Marvel comics characters like Spider-Man at the Disney theme parks any time soon. That seems to be the core take-away from today's announcements from Universal Studios. The company made two announcements this morning: A Despicable Me 3D experience will replace the Jimmy Neutron attraction at Universal Studios Florida in 2012. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Universal’s Islands of Adventure will be fitted with all-new digital animation done in 4K high definition. By investing money to completely reanimate the Spider-Man ride, Universal is sending a clear message to theme park visitors: "we still own the rights to attractions based on some of the popular Marvel characters and you won't see these characters at the Disneyland theme parks any time soon." Read the full press release after the jump, which includes a bunch of details about the new Despicable Me ride. Universal Orlando Resort Reveals Major...

Muggles will be finally be permitted into Universal Orlando Resort's Wizarding World of Harry Potter on June 18 - but a certain Potter mogul won't be setting foot in the Florida amusement center until mid-summer, a source at Universal tells People. Still, Harry creator J.K. Rowling's presence has been integral in the creation of the 20-acre theme park since Day One. Her approvals - along with those from Warner Bros., which produces the Potter movie franchise - were not only necessarily for the look and feel of the land, but also for the taste - of the trademark Butterbeer at...
