Most female characters in film succumb to the Devil. They are used as vessels or conduits for the Anti-Christ, lesser demons or the grandiose ideas of an occult. More often than not- they are chased, seduced or beaten into submission by satanic happenings. But some of these women do display degrees of ingenuity, agency, and physical prowess in their battle against coercion and the corruption of souls. Ranked from weakest characterization to strongest, the following list discusses the faculties that these women retain in the face of evil. (Minor spoilers ahead).

The actor – who has also starred in British dramas such as State Of Play and The Driver – has set up On The Corner with Complicit producer Jolyon Symonds, Senna director Asif Kapadia and James Gay-Rees, who produced Banksy doc Exit Through The Gift Shop.

Morrissey, who is speaking at Broadcast’s Production & Post Forum, said he wanted to have more creative control over the projects in which he stars. He would also like to develop projects in which he doesn’t appear.

He thought he was out, but they've pulled him back in.
Having directed the last four of the eight "Harry Potter" movies at Warner Bros. Pictures, David Yates is set to return to the franchise for the upcoming "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them". Yates is in negotiations with the studio to direct the project which Warners is aiming to serve as the launchpad of a new trilogy of films.
Author J.K. Rowling is writing the screenplay for the movie, which is set seventy years before the events of the Potter series and follows a fictitious author named Newton Artemis Fido Scamander.
Scamander compiled a reference guide to magical beasts, and the movies will follow his adventures after he is commissioned to write the book. Unlike the 'Potter' books, the action in 'Beasts' begins in New York.

After directing four out of eight Harry Potter movies for Warner Bros., David Yates has been chosen by the studio to direct the upcoming spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, based on a slim volume penned by J.K. Rowling to benefit the charity Comic Relief.
The spinoff, set 70 years before the Harry Potter series, won’t include characters from the original franchise and will instead focus on adventurer Newt Scamander. In the Potterverse, Scamander wrote a textbook titled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which is used by Hogwarts students. This spinoff, which is being eyed as a trilogy, will follow his journeys after he’s commissioned to write the textbook.
Before Yates got the gig, it had been rumored that Alfonso Cuaron would direct, though the Gravity filmmaker swiftly denied that he was involved. Yates is a natural pick to direct – he helmed the British miniseries...

The story behind the making of FX's new drama "Tyrant" is ultimately much more interesting than "Tyrant" itself. A lot of people came and went from this project, a lot of people fought for its future, and a lot of obvious stumbling blocks were ignored because there was a real passion to get it made. But the finished product doesn't suggest something nearly worth all the fussing and fighting. The story on the show (which debuts tomorrow night at 10): Bassam "Barry" Al-Fayeed (Adam Rayner) is the son of the dictator of a fictional Middle Eastern nation, has been living in self-imposed exile in America since his teenage years, and now works as a pediatrician in southern California, with an American wife Molly (Jennifer Finnigan) and teenage kids Emma (Anne Winters) and Sammy (Noah Silver). Reluctantly, he takes them to his homeland to attend his nephew's wedding, and dramatic events...

Life on Mars, “Episode 1”
Written by Matthew Graham
Directed by Bharat Nalluri
Originally aired January 9, 2006 on BBC One
“I had an accident and I woke up 33 years in the past. Now that either makes me a time traveler or a lunatic or I’m lying in a hospital bed in 2006 and none of this is real.”
Nothing about Life on Mars should have worked. Its premise sounded ridiculous- an English cop gets hit by a car and ends up in the 1970s trying to figure out if he’s crazy or if he really did travel through time. But with “Episode 1”, its pilot, the series hit the ground running, with immediate well-defined characters, an enthralling plot, witty dialogue, and an intriguing mix of sci-fi and character study.
“Episode 1” starts in 2006 and finds detective Sam Tyler (John Simm) hunting for a serial killer. After his girlfriend, a fellow cop, is kidnapped,...

We first told you that BBC America had given the series green light to novel-based Intruders back in October when it was announced as an original series. I am a huge fan of BBC America original series, as they are nearly always excellent in every way, the beloved Orphan Black being a strong recent example.
The good news continues this month with the announcement that the lead role has been filled by John Simm, whom most of us recognize as The Master during David Tennant‘s tenure as Doctor Who. The only slight tinge of disappointment comes with the recognition that he will most likely be sporting an American accent, as he will be playing a Los Angeles-based detective.
It’s interesting to note that, when the series was first announced, there was a great deal of emphasis on the sci-fi aspect of the series. Now they would almost have...

Back in October, BBC America greenlit its new original thriller series "Intruders," penned by Glen Morgan, and now some casting news has come along with the announcement of a pair of directors whose works are quite familiar to horror fans.
From the Press Release:
Acclaimed British actor John Simm (pictured) will lead the cast of BBC America’s new original series "Intruders" produced by BBC Worldwide Productions. The casting marks Simm’s return to BBC America, where he starred in hit series "Life on Mars," "State of Play," and "Doctor Who."
From writer and executive producer Glen Morgan ("The X-Files") and based on Michael Marshall Smith’s novel The Intruders, the series is a contemporary, chilling paranormal drama set in the moody Pacific Northwest. As strange, apparently unrelated events start happening, multiple storylines – a missing wife, an assassin covering his crimes, a child on the run – begin to intertwine to...

David Yates received critical acclaim for his direction of the final four films in the box-office dominating Harry Potter series, and really should have won a few Oscars for his trouble. There’s currently a lot of chatter about what he’s going to do next, and Deadline reports that the British director is in final talks with Universal to direct their reboot of Scarface.
Nobody knows how many drafts, or even writers, the script for the new version of the film has had – both the 1932 and 1983 versions were so iconic that Universal, keen on protecting the reputation and high-status nature of its property, are not giving anything away. That it’s only just come out that they’re in high-level negotiations with a director of David Yates’ stature is telling of the secrecy that surrounds the project.

British director David Yates, who shepherded the last four Harry Potter movies, could be taking on a remake of Scarface...
The original 1932 Scarface featured a story torn straight from the headlines of the day, based as it was on the exploits of Al Capone and his violent exploits in Chicago through the 20s and early 30s. Brian De Palma's 1983 remake was a gangster movie for its own era, full of greed-is-good Reaganomics, ultraviolence and soaring mountains of cocaine.
The resonance of those two movies is such that, even today, the imagery and dialogue of both movies - the latter in particular - is still referenced. It's fair to say, then, that anyone who's given the task of writing and directing a second remake will have a tough act to follow.

Exclusive: There’s a ton of curiosity and criticism about Universal‘s Scarface reboot since both the 1932 Chicago bootlegging film and 1983 Miami cocaine-dealing versions were so iconic. Understanding that, the studio according to my sources has been refining the script with several screenwriters and drafts while keeping all names and details under wraps. “Universal has been through a couple of drafts and now is very high on the current draft. The first stop is the director. This is before any conversations on talent or timing.” I’ve learned that the studio is in final talks with British director David Yates who directed the final four films in the Harry Potter film series (#s 5, 6, 7, and 8 from 2007-2011) – and in my opinion should have won some Oscar nominations for them as the franchise grew dark and interesting under his helming. Though he normally works at Warner Bros, Yates has been the subject...

Twelve years ago, HBO put to screen a miniseries that was one part Television event, one part historical drama, which had the considerable backing of executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks and the hype of being something of a spiritual successor to their highly acclaimed war film Saving Private Ryan. Through ten one hour long episodes, essentially using TV as a medium to explore a vast and epic journey through the Second World War that would simply be impossible to map on the big screen, and with Stephen E Ambrose’s critically acclaimed non-fiction book as source material and a huge cast representing a collective of real world heroes, one of the most ambitious storytelling exercises the small screen has ever mounted was brought to life. The result was much fanfare, both critically and among the masses, a recurring trope that continues to this day, and the fledgling start...

New York — "Brother against brother," says The Governor fiercely. "Winner goes free. Fight to the death."
Is this any way to run a town?
AMC's zombie drama "The Walking Dead" ended the first half of this season with a wrenching faceoff: roughneck brothers Merle and Daryl were pitted in a bloody test of loyalty to The Governor as he rallied his flock – the residents of Woodbury, Ga. – to goad them on.
That was last December.
Things haven't settled down as the hit horror serial returns for another eight episodes Sunday at 9 p.m. Est. The death match continues. The Governor, played by David Morrissey, is increasingly oppressive, even deranged.
"With Woodbury, he has built a sanctuary, a place of safety where humanity can start again," says Morrissey. "But the negative side of power is like a wobbly tooth for him. He just can't stop sticking his tongue in there. There's something gloriously painful about it,...

The Governor of The Walking Dead comics is a brute, an obvious villain who looks more or less like a pirate. But as embodied by British actor David Morrissey, he’s the suave and charismatic architect of the postapocalyptic haven Woodbury. Morrissey tends to play troubled, corruptible guys (who happen to be easy on the eyes), most famously in David Yates’s State of Play as the too-ambitious politician Stephen Collins. “Apparently, it’s my thing,” the actor says, laughing. “But it’s an interesting comparison. Stephen Collins was turned by power, and so now is the Governor.” Only one of them, however, keeps a trophy case of severed heads. Vulture caught up with Morrissey just as production was winding down on the third season of the zombie drama (viewers will have to wait until February to see the final eight episodes), and he tried to make us see things the Governor’s way,...

Has the legal drama’s steamy Kalinda/Nick plot gone too far? Maria Elena Fernandez and I debate the merits and flaws of this season’s most polarizing storyline on The Good Wife. At The Daily Beast, you can read my latest feature, "The Good Wife: Has Season 4’s Kalinda Storyline Gone too Far?" in which Maria Elena Fernandez and I offer up a he said/she said-style discussion on the Kalinda/Nick storyline on Season 4 of The Good Wife. Archie Panjabi’s Emmy-winning turn as Kalinda Sharma has been one of the highlights of CBS’ stellar legal drama, The Good Wife. But something happened on the way to fleshing out the fiercely independent investigator’s storyline—and not everyone is thrilled about it. Entertainment Weekly’s TV critic Ken Tucker last week criticized the show’s handling of the twisted dynamic between Panjabi’s Kalinda and Marc Warren’s Nick.

Edward Hall ("Spooks") will direct the two-parter with Hilary Bevan Jones ("State of Play") producing. Shooting kicks off this summer in South Africa and the UK ahead of an airing at the end of the year.

Those of you who read Robert Kirkman‘s comic book series The Walking Dead have been waiting for this for a while. We told you back in February that the gifted British actor David Morrissey (State of Play, Doctor Who) had been cast in the role of the Governor, the ruthless leader of a settlement of survivors we’ll be meeting in Season 3 of AMC‘s The Walking Dead.

In her new film The Decoy Bride, we're seeing how deft Macdonald is at 'momentary dambursts of feeling'
If I were David Tennant and found myself having to choose between Alice Eve and Kelly Macdonald, as he must do in The Decoy Bride, I'd, well … there's really no argument, is there?
No disrespect to Alice Eve, but I've been watching Kelly Macdonald for 16 years and somehow it just keeps getting more and more rewarding, especially in the last few, as she's broken out of second-tier parts and started taking more leads. She brings a steely kind of mildness to many of her roles, a quality – to my eye, a very Scottish quality – few other prominent actresses have: everything held back, the eyes giving it all away, the impression of great forces clashing inside what appears to be a tiny, vulnerable frame. She reminds me of what Tom Wolfe said of...
