For the first time in Miss Universe history, a black woman won the pageant. She was not the first black contestant to enter the pageant, but she is the one to break the "all-white" sorority of winners!! Miss Austria was first runner up. Miss USA, Kim Tomes of Texas failed to place among the top five finalists, although she did place among the semi-finalists.
