Doubtless there was no more fitting one-two-three punch at Cannes than Holy Motors – Cosmopolis – 11/26 The Day Mishima Chose His Fate, films from an austere netherworld of profound disturbance, loneliness, searching, questing. Kôji Wakamatsu's piercingly precise digital feature on the path Yukio Mishima took that ended in 1970 with him (and his most loyal followers) taking hostage the commandant of Japan's Self Defense Force, listing his demands and pleas to a jeering gathering of troops, and finally committing ritual suicide produces a shock when shown among these three speculative and fantastic films, as well as next to the generally uncommitted politics of the festival this year.

One of the key Cahiers du Cinéma critics, and co-author (with Claude Chabrol) of the first important book on his fellow Catholic Hitchcock, Eric Rohmer was nearly 50 and the Nouvelle Vague had hit the shores and retreated by the time My Night with Maud, now re-released to mark his recent death, brought him serious international attention. Maurice Schérer, born in either Tulle or Nancy, a former schoolteacher, a gaunt face with an odd lip. A notoriously private man who was in his late 40s before he found any sort of success, and then under a pseudonym. The obituaries say Eric Rohmer has died; that's not really true. Schérer was a real man whom very few people knew well, and yes, he really did die on Monday, aged 89. "Rohmer," who made his first short film in 1950, when Schérer was almost 30, and formally retired from filmmaking 57 years later, can best be described as the product of Schérer's intellect. BERLIN -- Patty Jenkins' Monster, Richard Linklater's Before Sunset, Ken Loach's Ae Fond Kiss, Eric Rohmer's Triple Agent, Hans Petter Moland's Beautiful Country and John Boorman's Country of My Skull are among the titles that will compete for the Golden Bear at the 54th annual Berlin International Film Festival, organizers said Thursday. Other titles in competition at the festival, which runs Feb. 5-15, include Daybreak, from Swedish director Bjorn Runge; Trilogy: The Weeping Meadow, by Greek veteran Theo Angelopoulos, and the Italian production Primo Amore from helmer Matteo Garrone.
