ABC’s Doctor Odyssey is adding another cast member to its staff: Sean Teale (The Gifted, Reign) will be joining Joshua Jackson as a series regular on the upcoming medical drama, TVLine has learned.
No character details for Teale’s role have been released, but we know that Jackson stars as the title character, “whose charms help him get what he wants.” Doctor Odyssey — which has received a straight-to-series order from ABC and is slated to debut this fall — is set aboard a cruise ship, with Don Johnson (Miami Vice) and Phillipa Soo (Shining Girls) also set to co-star.

Conor McGregor vs. Dwayne Johnson: Who Cashed the Bigger Check?
Did Conor McGregor really set a world record with his Road House payday? That’s what the onetime UFC superstar has been bragging about in recent weeks, claiming he’s now “the highest paid first-time actor of all time.” If true — and McGregor, 35, hasn’t disclosed how much he got for his debut role in Amazon’s reboot of the 1989 kickboxing flick — he would beat Dwayne Johnson’s record of $5.5 million for 2002’s Scorpion King. While some have scoffed at his claim, sources indicate he was indeed paid in that ballpark, and given the Irishman’s stature in the martial arts world and the offers he has turned down (he accepted a role opposite Vin Diesel in 2017’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage, only to back out before filming began) it wouldn’t be surprising if some sort of record was broken.

Ang Lee broke ground on films like “Gemini Man” and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” developing new camera systems to experiment with de-aging and high-frame rates in 3D. But as the old adage goes, you’re only as good as your last picture, and in the case of the Oscar-winning “Brokeback Mountain” director, he hasn’t released a new movie since 2019’s “Gemini Man” bombed at the box office. As did “Billy Lynn,” a movie that could only be shown properly in a small handful of screens, before it underperformed in 2016.
Lee, who is being honored at his alma mater New York University at a Tisch gala on April 8, spoke with IndieWire about his experiences making those films — and why he’s not going to repeat their innovations for his upcoming Bruce Lee biopic, starring Ang Lee’s own son Mason. “Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans”, based on the novel “Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era” by Laurence Leamer, is directed by Gus Van Sant, Max Winkler and Jennifer Lynch, in the second part of Ryan Murphy’s award-winning “Feud” TV series, now streaming on FX and Hulu:

Ari Aster has assembled an all-star cast for his next film, “Eddington,” recruiting Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr.
A24 is financing and producing the movie, which — based on Aster’s track record — we can only assume will give us nightmares. Plot details are kept under wraps besides the fact that the film “follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.”
“Eddington” starts production this week, with Aster writing, directing and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji is the director of photography.
“Eddington” marks the sixth collaboration between Square Peg and A24, which produced and distributed Aster’s previous three films — “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” — as well as “Dream Scenario” and the upcoming “Death of a Unicorn.”

Last year, all four acting Oscars were taken home by first-time nominees. Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress), Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Supporting Actress), and Ke Huy Quan (Best Supporting Actor) all won for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while Brendan Fraser claimed Best Actor for “The Whale.” This was a historical achievement as the last time this happened was back in 2006 when Philip Seymour Hoffman (Best Actor for “Capote”), Reese Witherspoon (Best Actress for “Walk the Line”), George Clooney (Best Supporting Actor “Syriana”), and Rachel Weisz (Best Supporting Actress for “The Constant Gardener”) all won on their first nominations.
But while it’s unlikely for all four acting categories to go to newbies, what about each individual acting category? Well, we’ve broken down each acting category and examined every acting winner of the last 20 years to see which category is most likely to award newbies and which is most reluctant to.

As Denis Villeneuve prepares to release the hotly anticipated conclusion to his Dune saga, Dune: Part Two, fans still lament one tragic loss that deprived the sci-fi sequel of a potentially legendary performance: Philip Seymour Hoffman as the devious face-dancer Scytale.
Hoffman, widely considered one of the greatest actors of his generation thanks to raw, Oscar-winning performances, died suddenly in 2014 from a drug overdose at age 46. In the years since, fans have continued mourning both the man and the incredible actor, including his absence from potential future roles like the cunning Dune shapeshifter Scytale or perhaps even Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.

There’s a saying over here in the UK about London buses. You wait so long for one and then two turn up at once. That notion could play out at this year’s Academy Awards as this 2024 ceremony could be the second in a row where all four acting winners are rookie nominees.
This happened last year when Michelle Yeoh edged out Cate Blanchett (“Tár”) to win Best Actress for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while her co-stars also emerged victorious. Jamie Lee Curtis took home Best Supporting Actress and Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. And Best Actor went to “The Whale” star Brendan Fraser.

When it comes to Ryan Murphy productions, you can always count on a glitzy cast, but the ensemble for Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans are especially so. But how did it all come together? “The process is sort of your map to creating this tapestry,” casting director Alexa L. Fogel tells TV Insider. “Ryan’s really good at casting. I think he’s very good at figuring out which projects he and I are good at doing together, what interests us together, and what kinds of things we excel at. And I think he’s been right every time.” Fogel has previously teamed with Murphy for Pose, The Prom, and The Politician, but this is her first time working on a season of Feud. One of the aspects of Capote Vs. The Swans that particularly appealed to Fogel was the fact that “this is a very East Coast story from a very particular age.

In 2006, a movie came out starring Daniel Craig, Sandra Bullock, Sigourney Weaver, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Isabella Rossellini, Peter Bogdanovich, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Toby Jones. That’s a murderer’s row of talent bringing to life writer/director Douglas McGrath’s script — and very few people paid it much mind. But “Infamous” was a victim of bad timing, not bad filmmaking.
One can’t blame audiences for greeting it with a collective shrug. McGrath’s movie tackled the exact same topic as the previous year’s “Capote” (the movie that earned Philip Seymour Hoffman his first and only Oscar): Truman Capote’s time spent researching and writing his true-crime classic “In Cold Blood.” After the buzzy release of “Capote” and months spent in awards season campaigning mode, no one was ready to revisit the subject.

Over the last decade or two, we’ve seen the Hollywood biographical drama — once the cheesiest of genres, though often an irresistible one — mature as a popular art form. The key evolution, dating back to films like “Capote” and “Lincoln” (and extending through “Oppenheimer”), was the decision to ditch the old cradle-to-grave sprawl in favor of focusing on a crucial time period of someone’s life — a strategy that allows for more texture and truth.
“Bob Marley: One Love,” a drama about the most larger-than-life of all reggae superstars, ardently follows the new biopic rules. The film opens in 1976, when Bob Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir), lean and majestic in his bouncing dreadlocks, heading toward the height of his fame, is getting ready to play a peace concert in Kingston. His goal is to heal the violent factionalism of Jamaican politics. It’s an uphill battle. The Jamaica we see is a...

Remembering Philip Seymour Hoffman 10 Years Later: The Actor’s Best Roles, from ‘Twister’ to ‘Doubt’
The worst thing that could have happened to the film community did on February 2, 2014: Philip Seymour Hoffman, the great actor who transcended every project he graced, died alone of a drug overdose in his Manhattan apartment. Everyone remembers where they were when the news broke. His death was a shock to the system of all his collaborators and everyone in the creative community, but he left behind an Oscar-winning, untouchable body of work that, whenever revisited, gives the consistent feeling that he’s still among us.
Though Hoffman won his Academy Award for his etched-in-stone portrayal of a great American writer in “Capote,” Bennett Miller’s film is hardly the best work he ever did. The mid-’90s saw Hoffman begin a too-short of a lifelong collaboration with Paul Thomas Anderson, working together on films like “Hard Eight,” “Boogie Nights,” and “Magnolia” before playing a charismatic cult leader who...

From an Oscar-winning performance in Capote to a masterly turn in Synecdoche, New York, the unique actor proved the standard-bearer for characterisation
Recently, I found my thoughts irritably returning, like a toe masochistically seeking out a tiny uncomfortable pebble in a shoe, to the spectacularly terrible Hunger Games prequel movie The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes – a truly forgettable piece of expired franchise content. A question nagged. Was there something that could have redeemed that dire film, even slightly?
Then I realised a big thing it lacked which its predecessors had: Philip Seymour Hoffman, whose desperately sad death 10 years ago at the age of 46 is still shocking to me. He played the creepy head gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee. It wasn’t his greatest role. It was clearly not much more than a paycheque. But through his presence, The Hunger Games raised their game.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the first two episodes of Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.
Feud: Capote vs. The Swans doesn’t waste time diving into the dark underbelly of Truman Capote’s life.
The FX series tells the story of his rift with his socialite friends after he published a thinly veiled account of their less-than-shiny personal lives. Rather than take a slow burn approach, the series weaves the narrative through several timelines, one of which shows Capote’s downward spiral as he deals with the fallout of these high-society women turning against him.
By the second episode, Tom Hollander’s Capote is spiraling into a drunken breakdown, lashing out at the few people still willing to be around him after his betrayal — including his partner, John O’Shea (Russell Tovey). There are two scenes in that episode where O’Shea assaults Capote after he’s said something particularly nasty.

Plot: Acclaimed writer Truman Capote surrounded himself with a coterie of society’s most elite women – rich, glamorous socialites who defined a bygone era of high society New York – whom he nicknamed “the swans.” Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets. When an excerpt from the book, Answered Prayers, Capote’s planned magnum opus, was published in Esquire, it effectively destroyed his relationship with his swans, banished him from the high society he so loved and sent him into a spiral of self-destruction from which he would ultimately never recover.

The cold shoulder is mightier than the pen in Capote Vs. The Swans, a dazzling new edition of Ryan Murphy’s Feud anthology. The first Feud series, which aired in 2017, depicted the juicy rivalry of Hollywood divas Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. The gossipy and rarefied New York world of Capote, as sharply written by Jon Robin Baitz (Brothers & Sisters) and mostly directed by Gus Van Sant, takes us back to the 1970s’ “ladies who lunch” culture so memorably skewered by Stephen Sondheim in his breakthrough Company. These “dinosaurs surviving the crunch” are a glamorous if garishly unsatisfied bunch, epitomized by Babe Paley (the stunning Naomi Watts), a statuesque and starched beauty unhappily wed to the flagrantly unfaithful CBS magnate William S. Paley. Like her fellow socialites—an impeccably cast ensemble including Diane Lane (as Slim Keith), Chloë Sevigny (as C.Z. Guest), and Calista Flockhart (as the waspish Lee...

We all know the idiom, “A watched pot never boils.” And in the context of FX’s latest anthology, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, time indeed feels sluggish while you’re waiting for something to happen. You know there are juicy stories to savor, but the narrative keeps on bubbling and at some point, you get tired of waiting for the tea to spill.
Capote Vs. The Swans comes seven years after Feud: Bette and Joan dished out striking details on the drama between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford surrounding the filming of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?. It also comes on the heels of a planned premise about the royals, Charles and Diana (later renamed Buckingham Palace), starring Matthew Goode and Rosamund Pike. That iteration of Feud was scrapped in 2018.

Two central questions hover over “Capote vs. The Swans” — the same two questions that have driven debate in the nearly 40 years since Truman Capote’s death. The first: What happened to “Answered Prayers”? The author’s long-teased final novel was never found, and various friends, associates, and scholars have debated how much of it was even written. Capote announced its completion multiple times. Chapters were shared privately and (very) publicly. Yet a fully realized edition of the book doesn’t appear to exist. So… what happened to it? Did he destroy it? Did he never write it? Talk to a dozen different people and you’ll get a dozen different answers (much like George Plimpton did so vividly in his 1997 book).
The second question at the heart of “Feud” Season 2 is both related to the first and even harder to answer: Why did Capote write, let alone publish, “La Côte...

Truman Capote is America’s Princess Diana. There, someone had to say it. In both instances, we remain obsessed not with the good work done but with the scandal-plagued, tragedy-tinted endings to two beloved figures. More than 40 years after Captote’s death by slow suicide (though officially it was liver failure), pop culture can’t get enough of his final years. Almost 20 years after the back-to-back film looks at his life, Jon Robin Baitz (“Brothers and Sisters”) brings Capote to TV with the second season of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series “Feud,” “Capote vs. The Swans.”
While the two movies about Capote’s life focused on the research and writing of his masterpiece “In Cold Blood,” “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” zeroes in on the work he published in the aftermath of that global success. Chicago – The seemingly middle-of-the-road character actor Bob Balaban has more to his legacy than just a ton of appearances from the 1960s to present in classic films and TV. His Chicago family were pioneers in film exhibition and the movie executive suite during the studio system in the early days of the history of film. It is in his DNA.
The amazing story of Chicago’s Balaban family began soon after they emigrated from Russia. His uncles formed a coalition with Sam Katz to build theaters. The Balaban & Katz brand meant the highest quality movie palaces eventually, the ultimate in the early 20th Century movie experience before television … two prominent theaters still standing are the city-symbolic Chicago Theatre and the still-closed-but-still-standing Uptown Theatre. Bob was born in Chicago, and his father built his favorite theatre icon (as told in the Podtalk below). For the final flourish, his uncle Barney Balaban...

Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans is coming!
The official trailer for the FX series from Ryan Murphy has arrived, and it looks exciting!
Calista Flockhart, Diane Lane, Naomi Watts and Chloë Sevigny all star in the series.
It’s also final role for Treat Williams, who sadly died in a June motorcycle accident at 71 years old. He plays former CBS head and media tycoon Bill Paley in the adaptation of Laurence Leamer’s Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era.
The cast also includes Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, Ella Beatty and Tom Hollander.
A plot summary, via Deadline: “The miniseries chronicles the tale of the famous wunderkind author Truman Capote as he stabs several of his female friends — whom he called his ‘swans’ — in the back by publishing a roman à clef short story called La Côte Basque 1965 in Esquire in 1975.”

The current Oscar frontrunners for Best Actor and Best Actress according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users are Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”). However, they both face serious competition from the stars of “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan. If the co-stars both win, “Maestro” would be the first film since “As Good As It Gets” to win both lead acting Oscars.
SEEBradley Cooper (‘Maestro’) makes Critics Choice Awards history
“Maestro” chronicles the decades-long relationship between conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and actress Felicia Montealegre (Mulligan). Their love story spans over 30 years from the time they met at a party in 1946 and continuing through their quarter-century marriage. But winning matching Oscars isn’t easy. To date only seven films have won both lead acting awards. They are:
“It Happened One Night” (1934) – Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert
“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975) – Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher...

Cliffhanger producer and The Legend of Hercules director Renny Harlin is back with another hard-hitting action film that aims to hit you like a ton of bricks. Hailing from Vertical, The Bricklayer stars Aaron Eckhart and revolves around a rogue insurgent blackmailing the CIA by assassinating foreign journalists and making it appear the agency is responsible. As other nations turn against the U.S., the CIA must lure Steve Vail (Eckhart) – their most brilliant and rebellious operative – out of retirement. With an elite and deadly skill set, Vail is tasked with helping clear the agency’s name, forcing him to confront his checkered past while unraveling an international conspiracy.
Bringing pain alongside Steve to those who deserve it most is Nina Dobrev’s Kate, a young, no-nonsense agent with a penchant for violence and a mean trigger finger. Clifton Collins Jr., Tim Blake Nelson, and Ilfenesh Hadera also star as primary cast members.

Another one bites the dust. No, this isn’t a “Bohemian Rhapsody” reference. Allow me to explain …
I recently presented “Five Reasons Why Danielle Brooks Will Win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for ‘The Color Purple.'” While I felt confident writing that, I also felt disappointed. After all, I was looking forward to another cliffhanger in that category (a la Angela Basset vs. Kerry Condon vs. Jamie Lee Curtis last year.)
So it pains me to say that after attending a recent film screening, I can proclaim that another Oscar race is as good as over. I’ll just rip off the band-aid as quickly as I can. Here are five reasons why Bradley Cooper is 100% guaranteed to win the Best Actor Oscar for “Maestro.”
1. The part has Oscar written all over it.

Actor Amy Adams felt very fortunate collaborating with late Capote star Philip Seymour Hoffman. But at one point Adams couldn’t get over being starstruck by her Doubt co-star.

Adams has worked with Hoffman a few times in her career. She first worked with the veteran actor in the movie Doubt, which saw her teaming up with several other established actors. Meryl Streep and Viola Davis were just two of the highly revered performers she’d end up sharing the screen with. Still, Adams took home an experience with Hoffman that she’s rarely had even with other longtime actors.

Turning any popular book into a movie is a minefield. Being too faithful can result in an overstuffed mess. Too unfaithful, you risk alienating a built-in fandom. But even greater consideration has to be given when adapting a nonfiction book into a narrative film. In cases like “Nomadland,” “Capote,” and the upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon,” filmmakers toed that line by showing us their books’ factual cores through the eyes of dramatic protagonists.
On the flip side of the equation is “Origin,” Ava DuVernay’s awkward and ungainly new adaptation of the 2020 bestseller “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” by Isabel Wilkerson. The misguided film comes across as a twisted sibling of “Eat Pray Love,” in which the book’s author becomes the film’s protagonist leading us on a world tour of historical atrocities.

Audiences might bemoan the lack of original thinking at the movies these days — all those sequels, remakes, and reboots! — but even new ideas can feel suddenly played out when faced with the horrifying specter of parallel thinking. Consider everything from “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon” to “Dante’s Peak” and “Volcano,” “Capote” and “Infamous” to “No Strings Attached” and “Friends with Benefits,” and those are just contemporary examples of the phenomenon. If you’ve got an idea for a movie — hopefully, a good one to boot — chances are, someone else has it, too. And they may even have it at the exact same time.

Joaquin Phoenix is receiving strong reviews for his performance in Ari Aster’s “Beau is Afraid,” about a mild-mannered, paranoid man who confronts his darkest fears as he embarks on an epic quest. Tomris Laffly (The Wrap) writes, “Joaquin Phoenix delivers one of his best performances.” With Phoenix likely to be a contender in the Best Actor category next year, either for “Beau is Afraid” or Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Napoleon,” let’s look back at Phoenix’s four previous Oscar races.
His first and to date only Oscar win came in early 2020 when he took home the gold trophy for Best Actor for his portrayal in “Joker,” directed by Todd Phillips. Phoenix’ victory was a sure thing going into Oscar night after sweeping the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards. As this year’s Academy Awards are doled out, can a statuette on the mantelpiece actually hinder your Hollywood career?
The year is 2006. Competing for Best Picture, the top prize of the 78th Academy Awards, are five films. Ang Lee’s wrenchingly sad queer cowboy love story Brokeback Mountain, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger is a critical favourite.
Capote, a meaty biopic by Bennett Miller, stars the incomparable Philip Seymour Hoffman in the title role. George Clooney’s gripping Good Night, and Good Luck celebrates CBS news reporter Edward R Murrow and an era of journalistic idealism and daring. Munich, directed by Steven Spielberg, is a propulsive historical thriller about the aftermath of the Black Friday terror attack during the Munich Olympics.

Almost every year there’s at least one actor who sweeps through all the major precursors prior to the Oscars. But this year none of the four acting categories will have had a sweeper through the entire season. The last time a scenario like this played out was actually way back in 2002.

With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.
We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.
Prime Video gets its streaming party started early by premiering the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six on March 3. This series, based on a book of the same name, tells the fictional Behind the Music-esque story of an equally fictional band. Then, on March 17, Amazon’s partnership with Donald Glover bears its first fruit with the series about obsessive fandom called Swarm. Reggie Jackson documentary Reggie premieres...

The Brenaissance has culminated in Brendan Fraser’s Oscar nomination for his role in The Whale. Although his first nomination for acting, The Whale is now the fifth Fraser movie to have a presence at the Oscars. If you’re curious about the other four, Showbiz Cheat Sheet is here to help. Here is your guide to Brendan Fraser at the Oscars, and why it’s about time they recognize his acting work too.
Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser | Universal Studios via Getty Images ‘Gods and Monsters’ was the first Brendan Fraser movie at the Oscars
The 1998 drama Gods and Monsters depicted filmmaker James Whale (Ian McKellan)’s relationship with a gardener (Fraser) at the end of his life. This is decades after Whale directed Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, as he ensnares the young man into sexual games.
Writer/director Bill Condon won the Oscar for his screenplay. McKellan and Lynne Redgrave got nominations.

If you read our Gold Derby combined odds for Oscar Best Picture, you see that the race is over and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is about to be crowned at the Academy Awards on March 12. But the favorite doesn’t always win the horserace. Upsets happen. The longshot comes in. Jaws drop. Calculations go awry. Something that no one could see coming winds up coming in. Chaos reigns.
And we love it.
If there is anything we’ve learned, it’s that there are no guarantees. Films that the majority think should have won, don’t. That’s particularly true in hindsight. “Citizen Kane,” widely regarded as the finest film of the 20th century, lost. So did the film many consider to be Martin Scorsese’s best, “Raging Bull.” “Moonlight” beat “La La Land.” “Crash” upset “Brokeback Mountain.” “Shakespeare in Love” upended “Saving Private Ryan.” “Chariots of Fire” snared the trophy over “Reds.

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.
For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

When Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival late last May, the buzz for its young star Austin Butler grew quickly to a deafening din. The film’s reception was capped by a 12-minute standing ovation, and the conventional wisdom was that the Oscar and potentially the Screen Actors Guild Award as well was Butler’s to lose. As of this writing, the 31-year-old is the second choice in the Academy Awards lead actor race as well as in the SAG Awards actor competition on Gold Derby behind Brendan Fraser for “The Whale,” positions that have rarely shifted since last fall. Colin Farrell of “The Banshees of Inisherin” is solidly in third place in both odds.
But the history of both the Oscars and SAGs tells us that Butler may be underestimated. He follows, after all, in the grand tradition of actors who have transformed themselves into real-life music legends,...

After coming up short against Allison Janney on her first Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for 2017’s “Downsizing,” Hong Chau now has a second chance at a supporting victory thanks to her work in “The Whale.” Although she is far from the first woman to compete for the same SAG Award twice, she has broken new ground as the only person of both Asian birth and descent to receive multiple solo film acting nominations from the guild. If she prevails, she will follow Yuh-Jung Youn (2020’s “Minari”) as only the second Asian winner of any individual film SAG Award.
Along with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who earned her first SAG Award notice for 1994’s “True Lies,” Chau is one of two returning supporting nominees in this year’s lineup. Also vying for the prize is Curtis’ co-star, Stephanie Hsu, a past TV ensemble winner for...

At the second annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in 1996, 32-year-old Nicolas Cage (“Leaving Las Vegas”) supplanted inaugural Best Film Actor recipient Tom Hanks and became the category’s youngest winner. Although his standing has been threatened in recent years by Taron Egerton (“Rocketman”), Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name”), and Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”), the record remains intact nearly three decades later. This year, however, he could finally be knocked down a spot on the list if Austin Butler (31) succeeds on his freshman solo bid for “Elvis.”

Oscar nominations were announced Jan. 24 and in the best-picture race, voters have come up with the most wide-ranging lineup in decades, full of populist choices.
The 10 films nominated for Oscar’s top prize represent a cross-section of blockbusters, specialty films, indies and mid-range Hollywood movies. There is also a healthy mix of long-established studios, streamers and specialty companies. Ang Lee has cast his son Mason Lee to play the iconic Chinese-American martial artist and actor Bruce Lee in Sony’s 3000 Pictures’ new biopic.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker has reportedly been working on the film Bruce Lee quietly for a long time. There have been different versions of scripts from four writers before the most recent one by Dan Futterman who’s the Oscar-nominated Capote screenwriter.
“Accepted as neither fully American nor fully Chinese, Bruce Lee was a bridge between East and West who introduced Chinese kung fu to the world, a scientist of combat and an iconic performing artist who revolutionized both the martial arts and action cinema,” said Ang Lee in a statement. “I feel compelled to tell the story of this brilliant, unique human being who yearned for belonging, possessed tremendous power in a 135-pound-frame, and who, through tireless hard work, made impossible dreams into reality.”

It’s been a big year for Prime Video. From The Boys season 3 to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to even the terrible games presented on Thursday Night Football, there were many hits to satisfy Jeff Bezos’ bottom line. How is the Amazon streamer planning on closing out 2022? Why, with another potential hit, of course!
Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for December 2022 is highlighted by the return of an old favorite. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan season 3 premieres all eight episodes on Dec. 21. This time around John Krasinki’s CIA analyst will be dealing with a potentially nuclear conflict with Russia. The only other original TV series of note this month is Three Pines on Dec. 2. The mystery series stars Alfred Molina as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache.
Over on the movie side of things, Prime Video is bringing forward a major holiday tile on Dec.
