Norwegian broadcaster Nrk has excelled in recent years at bringing bold and thought-provoking shows to the world. After their latest Canneseries winners “Power Play” (2023), “Afterglow” (2022), “Countrymen” (2021) and “State of Happiness” (2018), their latest bet “Dumbsday” (“Dummedag”) has its international premiere April 8 in the French TV festival’s main competition. It first aired on the Norwegian pubcaster Nov. 2, 2023.
The 10 x 30-minute show described by Variety as “‘Idiocracy’ meets ‘Day of the Dead’ is handled worldwide by Belgium-based Primitives which recently closed multi-territory deals in Europe on Nrk’s other comedy show, “Cammo”.
“We pride ourselves on seeking out distinctive formats and programming which will translate well across the international landscape,” said Primitives’ sales and acquisition manager Emma Gosling.

"On air!" Peacock has revealed an official trailer for a streaming series debuting later in January called In The Know, a fun riff on NPR office life. It's co-created by Brandon Gardner, Zach Woods, and comedy mastermind Mike Judge. This public radio parody follows the making of NPR's fictional "third most popular host" Lauren Caspian's radio program, where he conducts in-depth interviews with special guests – including Kaia Gerber, Ken Burns, Finn Wolfhard, Norah Jones, Mike Tyson, Hugh Laurie, Jorge Masvisdal, and more. "He's a well-meaning, hypocritical nimrod, just like you and me. He's also a stop motion puppet." The show features stop-motion animation from ShadowMachine (the same place that also made Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio) and a voice cast featuring Zach Woods as Lauren, Charlie Bushnell, J. Smith-Cameron, Mike Judge, Caitlin Reilly, & Carl Tart. The cleverest part are the interviews with real people spliced with all the other antics.

Mike Judge‘s science fiction comedy Idiocracy (2006) was one of the funniest movies of the mid-2000s. Idiocracy was one of Hollywood’s futuristic films which felt more like a comedy than a possibility at the time. However, in retrospect and with the turn of events in the world, Mike Judge and Etan Cohen‘s screenplay looks more like a documentary. Idiocracy‘s plot centered around U.S. Army librarian Joe Bauers, who wakes up five centuries into the future after undergoing a botched government hibernation experiment. However, he soon realizes he’s the smartest person in the world after years of evolution and technological advancement...

The 2000s were a great time for science fiction. Thanks to The Matrix closing out the 90s, studios were more willing to give the green light to stories about science gone awry, leading to favorites such as A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Paprika, as well as superhero hits like Spider-Man 2, X2, and Iron Man.

The character of Roberto, the homicidal robot, first appeared on the "Futurama" episode "Mother's Day", although he would become more of a star in the following season's "Insane in the Mainframe". Roberto, played by the amazing Dave Herman, was a vicious criminal often frustrated that he was programmed to be as violent as he was. He had a penchant for stabbing, and rarely spent much time outside of robot prisons and/or mental asylums. Roberto once forced Bender (John Dimaggio) and Fry (Billy West) to help him with a bank robbery, broke into Planet Express to take the main characters hostage, and escaped from an asylum by wearing the robotic skin of his doctor. "Don't call me crazy!" he would yell, "I'm just not user-friendly!" His parole officer once ordered Roberto to get an upgrade, otherwise, he wouldn't get back his stabbin' knife.
Roberto eventually even had a catchphrase of sorts.

Season 2 of last summer’s hit breakout series “The Bear” is set to premiere on Hulu on Thursday, June 22. After a tumultuous return to his family’s hole-in-the-wall Chicago restaurant, chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) and his staff transform the greasy sandwich joint into a first-class dining experience after he discovers the slush fund his brother left behind. Despite having the extra money to make his dreams a reality, the future proves to be both a personal and professional challenge for Carmy and the crew.
Watch the trailer for Season 2 of “The Bear”:
Beginning on June 14, the new series continuation of the beloved film “The Full Monty” arrives on Hulu. It’s 25 years later and the men and women of Sheffield, England, are in reboot mode, navigating life and family. The original 1997 movie focused on a group of down-on-their-luck, blue-collar men who put on a strip show to make ends meet.

The House of Representin’ was reopened at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, as Terry Crews resurrected one of his most famous roles, President Camacho from the cult comedy “Idiocracy,” to announce a party for a fake presidential campaign in 2024.
Back in 2006, Crews appeared in Mike Judge’s comedy about Joe Bauers, an Army corporal deemed the “most average person in the military,” whom along with a sex worker named Rita are selected for a military cryogenic experiment.
When the experiment is forgotten about, the two wake up in the year 2534, where the human race has dumbed itself down to the point that society has collapsed into a barely functioning dystopia on the verge of collapse. With the average Joe now the smartest man on the planet, President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho hires him to his cabinet to solve a drought that is killing America’s food supply.

Despite his massive popularity from "Beavis and Butt-Head," "King of the Hill," "Office Space," and the disturbingly relevant "Idiocracy," the Mike Judge comedy flick "Extract" doesn't get talked about as much as it deserves. Written and directed by Judge, "Extract" is the story of Joel Reynold (Jason Bateman), the owner of a factory that specializes in the production of flavor extracts. On the surface, Joel seems to have a perfect life, but in reality, it's all a facade.
Joel's wife Suzie (Kristen Wiig) hasn't desired him sexually in quite some time, and rather than actually talk about their problems or see a sex therapist, Joel hatches up a ridiculous plan to get her to cheat on him, thereby removing any guilt he might have about starting an affair with his employee, Cindy (Mila Kunis). Of course, since this is a Mike Judge film, there's always an added level of ridiculousness,...

How many of you have seen Idiocracy after it first appeared in 2006? Remember how much you laughed during the movie, at the absurdity of the things that were going on? You were probably thinking, “there’s no way that will happen to the world; it’s just comedy,” right? Well, more and more people are remembering the movie, and are struck by a single thought: dear Lord, it’s happening. Some people are even calling it a disturbingly prophetic movie of what America – and perhaps the whole world will become. But how much of that is true? Are we dumbing down,

Funnyman and animation legend Mike Judge is currently basking in the successful glow of both "Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe" and the titular characters' revival series on Paramount+. This has plenty wondering about the status of the "Office Space," "Idiocracy," and "Silicon Valley" creator's other landmark animation series, "King of the Hill." Created with Greg Daniels, the hilarious animated sitcom about the Hill family in Arlen, Texas enjoyed 13 seasons and 259 episodes, but fans are still thirsting for more. In March of 2021, Judge had revealed that a "King of the Hill" revival was in the works, but there hasn't been much movement ever since.
Many assumed that the show's original station, Fox, would be the ones to bring the series back to life, but thanks to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, we can officially count Fox out of the running. "That's not going to be with Fox," said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn.

Thirty years ago, an obscure Texas filmmaker named Mike Judge created the animated short Frog Baseball, in which two heavy metal-obsessed teenagers named Beavis and Butt-Head brutalize an amphibian with a baseball bat. It didn’t seem like anything especially brilliant at the time, especially since it ends with them viciously attacking a poodle, but it somehow gave birth to one of the most beloved shows in MTV history.

No American storyteller has scrutinized stupidity like Mike Judge. Ever since “Beavis and Butt-Head” launched on MTV in the Clinton era and lasted seven seasons, Judge’s chuckling, puerile teenagers have remained his most iconic creation, even as he widened his oeuvre to tackle many more targets with the likes of “King of the Hill,” “Office Space,” “Idiocracy,” and “Silicon Valley.”
Among those, only “Beavis and Butt-Head” has continued to make a comeback, first with new episodes produced in 2011, and now with a busy summer that includes both the new feature-length “Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe” and “Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head,” both of which are out now on Paramount+.

After politics in Vice and finance in The Big Short, director McKay is taking on the climate crisis in his star-studded ‘freakout’ satire Don’t Look Up
Adam McKay calls it his “freakout trilogy”. Having tackled the 2008 financial crash and warmongering US vice president Dick Cheney in his previous two movies, The Big Short and Vice, McKay goes even bigger and bleaker with his latest, Don’t Look Up, in which two astronomers (Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio) discover a giant comet headed for Earth, but struggle to get anyone to listen. It is an absurd but depressingly plausible disaster satire, somewhere between Dr Strangelove, Network, Deep Impact and Idiocracy, with an unbelievably stellar cast; also on board are Meryl Streep (as the US president), Cate Blanchett, Timothée Chalamet, Tyler Perry, Mark Rylance, Jonah Hill and Ariana Grande. Before Lakeith Stanfield received his first Oscar nomination for his role in Judas and The Black Messiah, the 30-year-old was in one of the weirdest, boldest, and most original films in the last decade. A signature debut for first-time director Boots Riley, Sorry To Bother You also stars Tessa Thompson, Omari Hardwick, and Terry Crews. The film follows an alternate reality of present-day Oakland, California where Cassius Green’s life has turned upside down the moment his telemarketing career takes off. If you’re a regular reader of The Playlist, then it’s likely you’re a fan of Luke Wilson. From his debut in the incredible film, “Bottle Rocket,” to his later collaborations with Wes Anderson, to his highly underrated and sadly prescient “Idiocracy,” Wilson is an actor that has been in a number of iconic films over the past three decades. And in honor of his new film, the feel-good drama, “12 Mighty Orphans,” Luke Wilson joined The Playlist Podcast for a discussion about the football feature and his previous filmography.

Kate: It’s not meant to be.Alex: No. Don’t say that. Something must’ve happened.A decade and a half is not really long enough to commemorate a film’s anniversary—but then again, bogus nostalgia for the immediate past is the main engine of pop culture discourse today. So here’s a wild proposition: what if 2006 was the last great year for adventurous, bigger-budget movies? It’s impossible to answer, of course, but consider these studio releases: Marie-Antoinette, Children of Men, Southland Tales, Clint Eastwood’s Iwo Jima diptych, Inside Man, Miami Vice, Idlewild, Crank, Idiocracy, The Holiday, The Black Dahlia. Millions were spent on bizarre highbrow and/or vanity projects like Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep, Soderbergh’s The Good German, Tommy Lee Jones’ (phenomenal) The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, or Ryan Murphy’s (excruciating) Running With Scissors. HBO has decided to drop two Mike Judge comedy shows that the premium cable network ordered from the “Silicon Valley” co-creator and showrunner in 2019, Variety has confirmed.
The shows were ordered as part of a two-year overall deal that encompassed all forms of television except for animation. The decision comes as Judge has been overseeing the reimagining of “Beavis and Butt-Head” for Comedy Central as part of an animation deal with the ViacomCBS network. The cancelation also arrives as HBO programming president Casey Bloys is refocusing on reviewing programming for both HBO and HBOMax.
The first project, formerly a co-production between HBO and Lionsgate, is titled “Qualityland.” It is based on the novel of the same name by Marc Uwe-King and is about “the story of humanity’s struggle against the tyranny of convenience. But funny,” the official description for the series states. Judge and Josh Lieb were slated to...

HBO Max has a lot to offer in August, with titles to look forward to including the premiere of a brand new Seth Rogen movie called “An American Pickle” on Aug. 6, and Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman film “The Dark Knight” out Aug. 1.
The nascent streaming service also shares content with HBO, with new films coming like “Jojo Rabbit” out Aug. 1, “Birds of Prey” out Aug. 15, “Richard Jewell” out Aug. 8, and “Queen & Slim,” out Aug. 22. The upcoming series “Lovecraft County,” which mixes fact and fantasy and takes place in 1950s Jim Crow America, arrives Aug. 16.
Leaving throughout the month include, tragically, all eight “Harry Potter” films, which will be gone after Aug. 25. Other absolute classics like “Good Will Hunting,” “You’ve Got Mail,” and both “Kill Bill” movies will be gone after Aug. 31, so watch them while you can.

HBO Max is continuing to pull from Warner Bros.’ incredible back catalogue of movies, with August bringing a huge number of new titles to the streaming service. With over 130 new pieces of content, the list of upcoming arrivals encompasses classic films of all kinds, from Oscar winners to comedies, horrors to family pics and, of course, tons of blockbusters.
A highlight for many users will probably be the glut of Batman films coming to HBO Max at the start of the month. Every cinematic outing for the Caped Crusader from 1989’s Batman starring Michael Keaton to 2008’s The Dark Knight with Christian Bale (which just celebrated its 12th anniversary this weekend) are going up on the site. Sticking in Gotham, both seasons of Harley Quinn are also coming to HBO Max, following their original release on DC Universe.

It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.
Over the years HBO (and by the transitive property its new HBO Max streaming offshoot) has grown accustomed to debuting a buzzworthy new TV show or limited series every couple of months. For August 2020 that will almost certainly be Southern Gothic horror series Lovecraft Country. The J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele-produced thriller arrives on August 14 on HBO and HBO Max.
Other strong HBO Max originals arriving in August include the documentary Class Action Park (release date Tbd), Seth Rogen-starring comedy An American Pickle (Aug. 6), and finales for I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Doom Patrol, and Perry Mason.
Of course, HBO Max is designed to house much of WarnerMedia’s content across many mediums. That means some recent movies on note like Jojo Rabbit (Aug. 1), Richard Jewell (Aug. 8), and Birds of Prey (Aug.

Beavis and Butt-Head are returning to TV.
Comedy Central announced Wednesday that the world’s favorite slacker teens are getting a reimagining at the cable network courtesy of original series creator Mike Judge. Comedy Central has ordered two seasons of the show as part of a new animation deal with Judge and 3 Arts Entertainment. The deal also includes potential spin-offs and specials.
As with the original series, Judge is set to write, produce and provide the voices for both iconic characters.
“It seemed like the time was right to get stupid again,” said Judge.
The series officially launched in 1993 on fellow ViacomCBS cable network MTV. It featured the titular duo offering satirical commentary on youth and adolescence. The show proved to be a cultural phenomenon, generating strong reactions both positive and negative.

Beavis and Butt-Head are back, moving from Gen X to Gen Z and from MTV to Comedy Central. An expansive deal Comedy Central has inked with Beavis and Butt-Head creator Mike Judge and 3 Arts Entertainment calls for a reimagined version of MTV’s seminal, Gen X-defining adult animated sitcom, which has received a two-season order, as well as additional spin-offs and specials. Under the pact, Judge will write, produce and provide voice-over for both famous characters.
The deal with Judge is part of a major programming shift at Comedy Central toward ramping up adult animated content and building an original animated slate around South Park. Beavis and Butt-Head will join recently ordered animated series Jodie, a spinoff of MTV’s iconic Daria, with Tracee Ellis Ross voicing the main character and executive producing.
Beavis and Butt-Head and Jodie are part of the same animated universe as Daria was a spinoff from Beavis and Butt-Head.

Thank God for Edgar Wright. The “Shaun of the Dead” and “Baby Driver” director has teamed up with Letterboxd to publish a giant list of his 100 favorite comedy films. Wright stresses these 100 films are just a selection of some of the best comedies ever made and not his definitive list of the absolute best. Regardless, Wright has offered up an amazing list just when cinephiles need it most. The list is presented in chronological order, starting with Harold Lloyd’s 1923 silent comedy classic “Safety Last” and ending with Shinichiro Ueda’s zombie comedy “One Cut of the Dead.” Wright did not include any of his own comedies on the list.
Any Wright fan won’t be too surprised to see Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton films dominate the early side of his list. Chaplin’s “The Gold Rush,” “The Circus,” and “City Lights” all appear in the first 10 selections, as do Keaton’s “Our Hospitality,...

If you know me at all, you know I love a good sports movie or series. There’s just something about an underdog story that gets me right in the feels, especially one that’s true. And boy do we have an underdog story for you! Luke Wilson has been hired to star in the drama 12 Mighty Orphans, directed by Ty Roberts (The Iron Orchard).
The story is being adapted from the book by Jim Dent, “based on the true story of a group of Fort Worth orphans who vie for the state championship and rally a broken nation at the height of the Great Depression.” Here’s the full rundown from Deadline:
Wilson will play Coach Rusty Russell, a WWI vet with a troubled past he can trace to his mother leaving him in an orphanage when he was a child. Looking for redemption by trying to turn...

The restless entrepreneurs behind Pied Piper on HBO’s “Silicon Valley” have at least one more season of adventure around the corner, but after that, show creator Mike Judge might be ready to move on. “I think HBO is interested in more, if we come up with ideas that would turn it into something longer,” Judge said in an interview with IndieWire in Austin, a week after starting the writing process on Season 6. “But we also don’t want to run it into the ground.”
Judge has said before that he has an ending in mind for the antics of his wayward techies, but as the show prepares for its latest installments, the idea may soon come to fruition. “It’s feeling that way,” he said. “We just started writing the new season so we’re going to wait and see, make that decision after we’ve gotten a little way into it.
