[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the Netflix limited series “Godless.”]
Scott Frank first conceived of “Godless” because he loved the Western genre. In an interview with IndieWire, he said, “It’s the romance of living in that time, everything from the horses to the guns. There’s a very romantic notion, the kind of surviving through all of that and living out there in those days. A lot of people look back on that and wish we were sort of there again, in many ways.”
“It’s not just the negative aspects, like the violence and sort of the being caught out in the elements. All of that are certainly part of it, but it’s also just the quiet, giant, empty spaces that we don’t have anymore, or we certainly don’t experience every day anymore.”

Most single-shot sequences, aren’t. What you’d swear are single takes are actually seamless edits — but that doesn’t dilute their mind-bending power. Even better: one-take action sequences like the third-act corker in “Atomic Blonde,” which sees Charlize Theron battling scads of baddies in a longform, long-take sequence designed to look like a single shot.
David Deitch’s film is filled with heart-pounding action scenes (Theron cracked multiple teeth while filming the Cold War-set Berlin spy thriller), but it’s that big final battle that action fans will remember. And while “Atomic Blonde” feels fresh, the sequence takes plenty of cues from single-shots that have come before.

British director Ben Wheatley chilled us to the bone with “Kill List,” made us think with “High-Rise,” and gave us a roaring good time with this year’s shoot-em-up throwback, “Free Fire.” The film is set in the late seventies against the backdrop of Northern Ireland’s guerrilla war, and stars Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer and Brie Larson as some of the characters involved in an illegal gun deal between Ira soldiers and gun dealers that quickly dissolves into a barrage of bullets.
To celebrate the Blu-Ray release of “Fire Fire” on July 18, we’ve giving away five Blu-Ray copies of the film to five lucky winners based in the United States.

Luc Besson has always made incredibly distinctive films, whether he's working in France or America.
This summer, he's bringing us the visual epic, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which is based on the material that inspired Star Wars. This is a passion project for Besson, who always wanted to adapt the French comic series "Valérian and Laureline". The comics also served as an inspiration on his film, The Fifth Element.
We can't wait to see Dane Dehaan and Cara Delevigne co-star in the film as Valerian and Laureline, two special operatives who are sent to Alpha, an incredible city that is being threatened by a dark force. We're confident that the visuals will blow our minds,...

Edgar Wright only has four major features under his belt, but he's already regarded as a legendary filmmaker.
Three of these films make up the "Three Flavours Cornetto" trilogy, a series of films which are all directed by Wright, written by Wright and actor Simon Pegg, and starring Pegg and Nick Frost. Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End make up this thematic trilogy--which have a running joke of all being in reference to a different flavour of Cornetto ice cream. Despite this quirky running theme, the three films are vastly different. Shaun of the Dead is a zombie film, Hot Fuzz is a buddy cop movie, and The World's End is an apocalyptic pub crawl. All three are hilarious and highly regarded comedy films.

Ben Wheatley has long talked about wanting to make a movie called “Freakshift,” in which cops head out at night to hunt down and kill monsters coming up from underground. It’s the movie you need a pretty hefty budget for, and it appears after rising through the ranks with well-received genre films like “Kill List,” “High-Rise” and “Free Fire,” Wheatley finally has enough stature to secure the budget and make this passion project a reality.

Deadline reports that Alicia Vikander is in talks to lead the project, which is aiming to begin production this August. She’s currently shooting the “Tomb Raider” reboot, but that wouldn’t interfere with Wheatley’s film as production on the blockbuster is expected to wrap in early summer. Her casting would mark the latest Oscar winner to join a Wheatley movie.

James + Semaj is a column where James Franco talks to his reverse self, Semaj, about new films. Rather than a conventional review, it is place where James and Semaj can muse about ideas that the films provoke. James loves going to the movies and talking about them. But a one-sided take on a movie, in print, might be misconstrued as a review. As someone in the industry it could be detrimental to James’s career if he were to review his peers, because unlike the book industry—where writers review other writer’s books—the film industry is highly collaborative, and a bad review of a peer could create problems. So, assume that James (and Semaj) love all these films. What they’re interested in talking about is all the ways the films inspire them, and make them think. James is me, and Semaj is the other side of me.

This past Wednesday, the Toronto Film Festival hosted its annual pre-opening-night fundraising event the Tiff Soirée, where proceeds go to help the festival as well under-served Toronto youth. The guest of honor for the evening was actor Michael Fassbender who participated in a career-long retrospective with Tiff artistic director Cameron Bailey. During the event, Fassbender provided some interesting details about his creative process as well as his thoughts about his performances, including the one’s he didn’t like so much, such as Magneto in “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” According to Vulture, he was “cringing and rubbing his face with embarrassment” when the clip was playing for the audience and eventually admitted that he’s not a fan of his acting. “I just think it’s me shouting. One of the most impressive aspects of the shootout scene from "Down Will Come", the fourth episode of this season of "True Detective", and one of the things I highlighted in my episode recap, was how the action completely altered the trajectory of the character of Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch). A former military man, lost and unconnected now that he's home, suddenly finds himself right back in the chaos. That chaos is a fundamental aspect of who Paul really is, it's what he thrives on. When the action finally dies down, Paul is the only survivor who seems anachronistically at ease. Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) and Velcoro (Colin Farrell) just went through a physical and mental ordeal and are uncomfortable to be left standing to say the least. Rachel McAdams herself even had a physical reaction during the filming of the scene. HBO has just released a behind the scenes look...

With November Man out, excitement for Pierce Bosnan’s return to spying is at an all-time high for many James Bond fans. November Man, based on the seventh installment of Bill Granger’s book series called There Are No Spies, is about ex- CIA agent Peter Devereaux (Pierce Bosnan). While living a quiet life in Switzerland, Devereaux is ejected out of retirement for one last mission. Although the concept of the “one last mission/job” is not a new concept for Hollywood, it definitely has its place in cinema history, branching out to a wide range of reasons why our beloved characters are being pulled back into their past lives. From a retiree’s last gig, to the bad-boy-gone-good-and-then-bad-again mission, to the revenge premise, mythology of the ex-professional can surely delight and excite us to champion our heroes for one last fight. Slow-motion scenes are staples of the action-movie genre. In the right hands, they become signature set pieces and film iconography. In the wrong hands, you get giggles and lots of eye rolling. The trailers and credit list for 3 Days to Kill might lead you to believe it’s just another Taken-riffing tale of an American on the warpath in Europe, just with an actual American this time. You’d be right. It’s a tired action vehicle for an equally exhausted-looking star, one that’s still big enough to save the film from VOD obscurity. But under the manufactured surface is a different beast entirely, a film that piles on so many wrongs, that the sum total turns out to be a warped kind of right.

Sundance is overcrowding Main Street already early Friday, and it didn’t take long for the deal-making to begin. Of the two hot Thursday titles, Dinosaur 13 found a home with Lionsgate and CNN Films, and the other title Whiplash is in play with Lionsgate/Roadside and A24 the outlets I’ve heard in the mix though the sale might take a little time because others like Radius-twc are catching up to it. The pic played great in the room, I’m told. Related: Sundance: Sony Nabs International Rights To ‘Whiplash’ Elsewhere, hockey players are massing again for the seventh annual Luc Robitaille Celebrity Shootout fundraiser which takes place Sunday from 2:30-4:30 at the Park City Ice Arena. Gonzo guitars in Rush, chip tune nostalgia in The Kings Of Summer, and clapping in Ain't Them Bodies Saints. It's Music in Film time...
As autumn draws in, film music fans are set for a dream couple of months. Danny Elfman has a concert at the Royal Albert Hall, Michael Nyman is set to perform at the London Film Festival and Neil Brand is leading a BBC4 series starting Thursday 12th September called Sound Of Cinema, which looks fantastic.
To top it all off, September also sees the release of some diverse, decent and downright unique soundtracks. Here are three that have wormed their way into my earholes.
Rush
When watching Ron Howard’s F1 drama, the first thing you notice, before you even see a car, is the sound: the roar of an engine as the vehicles scream round the bend and burn tire tracks in your ears.

From Monsoon Shootout to a Bollywood take on The Graduate, this year's London Indian film festival offers innovative storytelling that challenge cliches
The London Indian film festival got underway last week with the screening of Monsoon Shootout, a slick Mumbai-set cops-versus-gangsters movie that was well-received at its Cannes film festival premiere. Written and directed by Amit Kumari, it is produced by Anurag Kashyap the brilliant creator of last year's epic masala-western, Gangs of Wasseypur.
Monsoon Shootout is your standard Mumbai thriller, but it is also a tightly scripted and cleverly woven tale. The film explores the three options open to a rookie policeman, (played by newcomer Vijay Varma) when he corners a gangland assassin (played brilliantly by Nawazuddin Siddiqui): let the villain escape; shoot him dead; or put him through Mumbai's corrupt and inefficient judicial system. Each story is told with a grim honesty that manages to veer from...

Of course you want to watch a new TV spot and clip for Iron Man 3! This latest spot is called "Life," and I believe it's the 11th official domestic spot that's been released for the movie so far. Then there's a clip that's been released by MTV called "Shootout", and it's a pretty rad scene that takes place while Tony Stark's mansion is being attacked. As May 3rd approaches I'm sure we're going to see a lot more of this stuff.

Twelve years ago, HBO put to screen a miniseries that was one part Television event, one part historical drama, which had the considerable backing of executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks and the hype of being something of a spiritual successor to their highly acclaimed war film Saving Private Ryan. Through ten one hour long episodes, essentially using TV as a medium to explore a vast and epic journey through the Second World War that would simply be impossible to map on the big screen, and with Stephen E Ambrose’s critically acclaimed non-fiction book as source material and a huge cast representing a collective of real world heroes, one of the most ambitious storytelling exercises the small screen has ever mounted was brought to life. The result was much fanfare, both critically and among the masses, a recurring trope that continues to this day, and the fledgling start...

To paraphrase the great Michael Keaton, “You want to get nuts, Crime Heads? Let’s get nuts.”
By which I mean, of course, let’s talk true crime.
Now you may be thinking, “How is non-fiction nuttier than the made-up stuff?” And if you are thinking that, I hope your head wound heals up well. For the rest of us who have accepted the old cliché that truth is stranger than fiction as gospel, you know where I’m coming from.
You know that a story of a pizza delivery man who chains a bomb to himself so that he can pose as a hostage and rob a bank, only to be blown up by his own bomb, is not beyond the realm of possibility. You know, in fact, that such a story isn’t even unusual – at least, not in the definitive sense. A story like the Pizza Bomber,...

New Delhi, Dec 23: Ronit Roy, appreciated for his role as a strict father in 'Udaan', is now set to play police officer Raja Tambat in director Sanjay Gupta's 'Shootout At Wadala'. But he is most excited about sharing the frame with Anil Kapoor.
'Yes, I will play Raja Tambat in Sanjay Guptas film 'Shootout At Wadala'...Proud to co-star with Anil Kapoor, who I've idolised since many years for his dedication towards his craft. He plays Isaque Bagwan...,' Ronit posted on Twitter.
Anil has been a revered actor in tinsel town, but he became a bigger name after featuring in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning film 'Slumdog Millionaire'. The success.

Hollywood joke:
A writer, a director, and a producer are crawling across the desert without water, dying of thirst. They look up and sticking out of the sand is a nicely chilled bottle of apple juice. Before the writer and director can grab it, the producer is on his feet, unzips his pants and starts peeing into the bottle.
“What’re you doing?” the writer and director cry.
“Fixing it!” says the producer.
So, that attitude in mind, when I tell you John Calley died last Tuesday at age 81, and if the name is unfamiliar and I try to enlighten you by saying he was a producer and – worse – a studio executive, no doubt at least a few of you who regularly patronize this site out of your love for film and filmmakers might shrug and say, “So what?” A dead studio exec? The big-budget (usually summer) blockbuster is the financial cornerstone of the American motion picture industry, and has been for much of the last 35 years or so. In all its forms – action/adventure, suspense, Western, war story, horror, science fiction, fantasy, et al – the big budget thriller’s earning power is unmatched by any other movie form. Romantic comedies like The Proposal (2009), slapstick and teen comedies like The Hangover (2009) and Little Fockers (2010), are sometimes capable of blockbuster-caliber domestic earnings, but rarely match those of the thriller, nor can they rival its attraction overseas. The performances of more adult-themed dramas and comedies – even those considered financial successes — are often weaker still. The reliance of most major thriller releases today on action-driven plots is a form of cinematic Esperanto, transcending barriers of language and cultural nuance. The blockbuster thriller is as accessible to Asian audiences as it is to Latin American audiences as it is to U.

NBA All Star Weekend has just concluded and besides the All Star Game, 3-Point Shootout and Slam Dunk Contest, one of the biggest happenings in the world of the basketball was a new film by Robert Rodriguez. The director of Sin City and Spy Kids teamed up with Nike and Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant, along with Bruce Willis, Danny Trejo and Kanye West, for a basketball-influenced grindhouse short action film called The Black Mamba. We showed you the poster and a few trailers [1] for the 6 minute movie earlier this month and now, we've got the full film embedded after the jump. Don't forget, this is a Nike sponsored movie [2] so the shoe shots are gratuitous. But, as Rodriguez says in the film, "Product placement gives us a bigger budget. Bigger budget? Bigger explosions." Fun, right? But not as fun as I thought it was going to be. I...

Amy Pascal is sticking with her gig as co-chairman at Sony Pictures Entertainment for the moment. Why shouldn't she? She's been ensconced at Sony for 20 years now. She has her run of the place. One can argue that Pascal enjoys the best aspects of running a major studio without the administrative headaches that usually go with it--the business side is covered by her partner for seven years, Spe co-chairman and CEO Michael Lynton, the yin to her yang. He's quiet, circumspect, reasoned, cool, brilliant, politically deft. She is noisy, mercurial, neurotic, needy, creative, brilliant, charming. The Book of Eli has arrived on Blu-ray and it’s ready to deliver us. It got mediocre reviews when it was in theaters as the film was criticized for its preachy nature, uneven plot twist and lack of action. Now that the film is on Blu-ray we get to take another look at it. The question is, does The Book of Eli manage to entertain, or does it fall off the path and lose its way?
The Book of Eli is the 2010 action film directed by Albert and Allen Hughes (From Hell, Menace II Society). The film is actually more a hybrid of various genres. It has elements of the action, drama, western, adventure and thriller. The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that was ravaged by nuclear war. It tells the tale of one man, Eli (Denzel Washington) who is a lone wanderer across the desolate wastelands...

Chicago – The Emmy-winning AMC series “Breaking Bad” may not be the cultural phenomenon that is the network’s “Mad Men” but it has just as loyal a following and a growing group of fans who are realizing that this drama is easily as good and arguably better. Scary, funny, dramatic, and honestly moving, “Breaking Bad” is remarkable television that pulls off that amazing trick of feeling both genuine and completely original at the same time. The first two seasons are now available on Blu-ray and should not be missed.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
What more reason do you need to check out “Breaking Bad” than this one: Bryan Cranston won the Emmy for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series for both of the first two seasons of the show (it also won Editing in both of its seasons and was nominated for Best Drama last year). With Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen opening this week, it seems time to take a look back at the critical punching bag career of Michael Bay. Outside of The Rock, Bad Boys and Transformers people have destroyed and tarnished his films. While Pearl Harbor is undoubtedly one of the worst things to happen to humanity, Bay takes too much blame for films that are otherwise purely and greatly entertaining. The guy knows what he’s making and outside of that film we shall not mention, he never parades them as “the most important film in the history of cinema making.” His flicks cater to the twelve year-old inside us all that wants to kill the villain in the worst possible way or go up and save the world on an asteroid (and really, when you’re twelve, do you care about the science of it all or blowing up the asteroid and being a hero?...

DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – AMC’s “Breaking Bad” is not one of my favorite shows on television but the lead performance by Emmy Award winner Bryan Cranston is one of the most riveting I’ve seen in the last few years. He is pitch-perfect and everything that works about this unusual series comes from his great star turn.
As great as Cranston is on “Breaking Bad,” I think the show still has some growing pains that I expect will be worked out in season two. The first season of the critically acclaimed show is hit-and-miss, but it’s only seven episodes and nearly every one is better than the one that preceded it. It’s a show still finding its voice and settling on its tone but it’s easy to believe that the upcoming season two (debuting March 8th) could be one of the most interesting of the Spring.

Oh, that deceptive Ron Howard. Perhaps he picked up this dirty trick doing research for Frost/Nixon, his exceptional new film that comes out in a week in some cities, two weeks in others.
While he was making the Dan Brown Da Vinci Code prequel, Angels & Demons, Howard knew he would be banned from shooting in various locations in Vatican City. Turns out the Catholics aren't big fans of the idea that their religion is a fraud and that some within their ranks would kill to keep that fraud a secret. Go figure.
So when the time came to shoot Angels & Demons, Howard had an uphill battle in front of him. "We just weren't allowed anywhere near them," the director said of filming in many of Vatican City's holy buildings, which figure prominently in the story. But he found a way around the restrictions, telling the TV show Shootout, "We didn't shoot at the Vatican.

The Kingdomby Peter Dimako, Editor The Blu-ray review: Interesting subject matter is let down by poor acting and brainless character relationships. Academy Award® winner Jamie Foxx stars alongside Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman and Chris Cooper in the film helmed by Peter Berg from the original screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan. The story, which continuously pastes a buffet of varied personalities in on-screen text, is a poor shot at such greats as the “Bourne” series and follows an elite FBI group who throw themselves into dangerous ground after a secured American base inside Saudi Arabia is blown to smithereens. This is the country that spawned fifteen of the men who hijacked planes during the horrific events of 911.Although Berg tries to show that there are emotional conflicts on what is perceived as good and bad on both sides of the spectrum, the Arab characters are weakly crafted to the point of imbeciles.
