The Peabody Awards will honor Norman Lear and the Independent Television Service (Itvs) at a New York gala in May for its 76th edition. Lear and Itvs were selected due to their contributions for storytelling in television, said Peabody spokesperson Margaret Blanchard in a statement. The television writer and producer will be receiving the Individual Award for his role in changing how we view sitcoms. They were a typically “white-bread medium” before Lear came along, Blanchard said, and he introduced diverse characters into shows such as “All in the Family,” “Sanford and Son,” “Good Times,” and “The Jeffersons.” Also Read:...

Get in touch to send in cinephile news and discoveries.NEWSLast weekend the generally derided yet fiercely observed Golden Globes winners were announced 2016, which included La La Land (Best Director, Screenplay, Song, Score and Actor, Actress and picture for a musical/comedy), Moonlight (Best Drama), and Elle (Best Foreign Language film, Best Actress for a drama).Okay, it's not strictly cinema news, but 18 episodes of new moving pictures directed by David Lynch counts as news to us! Showtime has revealed the number of episodes of the upcoming season of Twin Peaks, all directed by Lynch, and that the two-hour premiere of the show will be on May 21, immediately followed by the digital release of the third and forth episodes. Those film professionals who will be in Cannes at the time better plan on skipping their Monday morning screenings!Great news for those, like us, still enamored by celluloid: Kodak has...

Pamela Anderson continues to stand by another, much different blond bombshell, Julian Assange, calling him “a hero” and urging his release. “It’s crazy that Julian is still being held as a political prisoner — after the Un has stated (and recently for a second time) that there is no reason for his detention and has ordered that the UK and Sweden release him,” the former “Baywatch” beauty said of the WikiLeaks editor-in-chief in a statement obtained by TheWrap that included a link to the Un Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner’s statement on Assange. “He is a hero,...

South by Southwest (SXSW) is the best week of the year for film fanatics. Period. It's in a wonderful place (Austin, Texas), sweetened by a lovely atmosphere that mixes the highbrow appreciation of erudite film nerds with the go-for-broke excitement of genre enthusiasts. There's nothing quite like it in the world of film festivals -- the vibe at SXSW isn't something that's easily replicated or translated; it just is.
We were on hand to take it all in and report back. Our interviews from the festival will be coming soon, along with the films that they accompany. But we also wanted to rank every film that we saw, in order of best to worst. This year's crop was pretty wonderful, even those in the back half of the list are still pretty great. (There were a couple of stinkers, but that happens at every festival.)
So sit back and relax,...

Digital Spy was fortunate enough to score a sizeable amount of time in the company of acclaimed filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn in support of the DVD release of Only God Forgives. A thematically audacious and visually stunning movie, this twisted tale of Ryan Gosling's taciturn drugs dealer becoming embroiled with a vengeance-fuelled policeman called Chang has polarised audiences. But what is it really about? We probed its maker, before delving further into his career to explore the likes of Pusher and Bronson. As for the future, Bond, Beckham and Barbarella are all on the agenda...
Since its release, Only God Forgives has inspired many different interpretations. What's the weirdest one you've encountered so far?
"My favourite one is when a German woman at Cannes came up to me and said, 'I think this movie takes place in the vagina, yes?' I was like, 'Yeah, that's pretty spot on,...

She’s one of Australia’s hottest exports, and Jessica Hart was in the center of the action during the Bcbgmaxazria Fall 2013 presentation in Manhattan today (February 7).
The 26-year-old Sydney native sat alongside Kate Nash, Sami Gayle, Krysta Rodriguez, and Julie Henderson at The Theatre at Lincoln Center as part of Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week.
In related news, Jessica is the current cover girl for Maxim Australia magazine, and in her interview she discussed how she became a model in the first place.
"I won the Dolly modeling competition in 2000. My auntie took me to a shopping center and entered me. She always wanted to take pictures of me and I wouldn't let her,” explained Hart.
Jessica also shared how she stays so fit- "I've been going to the gym every minute I can get, and when I'm not working in the gym I'm taking Flybarre classes [a full-body combo of yoga, dance, circuit training, Pilates, and strength]. One day......

Nowadays every time we turn on the TV or sit down to read the news, we're reminded of the imperfections of this world. Wars, racism, intolerance... they're everywhere, man. Yet, none of them are as profound a reminder of our suckage than the fact that these delights never existed.
Badass Digest brought a new video to light found on YouTube (of course) showing off Eighties style action figures from John Capenter's classic film The Thing. The feeling of authenticity in the following faux commercial is amazing. Anyone who grew up in the decade of big hair and gaudy clothes will recognize its style immediately.
We're not exactly sure who's responsible for this wondrous ad, but we want to both kiss you and tell you to go screw yourself at the same time.
One day... in a perfect world. Sigh.

What my followers on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ saw today: • I can't even. "Brynne, 17, is the leader of the pack, the one the others call the "enforcer." She is home-schooled and a regular on the beauty pageant circuit. Savannah, 20, is known as the "compassionate one," a college student who likes to shop. Finally, there's Tess, "the middle man" because the others say this 17-year-old can play both good and bad cop. She also performs in local musicals." Ready-made for Christian cinema or Hollywood satire. Maybe it's all the same these days. Teen Girl Exorcism Squad: Three Arizona Girls Claim to Cast Out Demons • Ho boy... Is it Okay For Critics to Pirate Movies? • How do you make a video game about a story that decries violence? I don't see how this can work and retain the social criticism of the novel and film... The Hunger Games: Great book. Good movie.

While every production has its issues, it appears as though Men In Black 3 is having more than most.
After starting production last year, without a completed script remember, the film has hit the skids, with a cavalcade of writers jumping aboard to take on rewrites of that very incomplete piece of writing. Well, according to The Wrap, the finances may have caught up with Sony.

You play as the ill-tempered Ricky Caldwell who is on a violent rampage with a gun in some random neighborhood.

Readers were invited to submit their favorite thing about either Pedro Almodóvar or Penélope Cruz for a chance to win a copy of the new Broken Embraces DVD. This contest got a great response. I guess the film experience's well known love for P&P has attracted other like-minded movie freaks. The Winner, drawn randomly, is... Adelutza in Indiana who writes I don't think I can express how much I love Pedro and his films. I love him so much that, when I have a bad day, all I have to do is bring up the memory of Tacones Lejanos (High Heels) , the scene where Letal sings "Piensa en mi" - and the voice of Luz Casal combined with the face of Miguel Bose are enough to bring me back to the real world where movies rule. Wouldn't that be nice? :-)Adelutza... are you implying that movies don't rule the world?...
