Kid Auto Races
This cartoon is beautifully produced and animated for the era: the movement is fluid and the background world, while not overly ornate, is perfectly filled in; notice the portion after the car goes off the track and the lead is staggering around, dazed, in a landscape littered with broken lumber.
But the story is too simple -- not surprising for a cartoon that only lasts a minutes -- and the gags are not very interesting. Also, to the modern eye, it is a bit peculiar: a baby wanders out onto an auto racetrack, and havoc ensues, but for some reason all the characters are Black, and stereotyped for the era. Well, the stereotyping makes sense, but what was the reasoning behind making them Black? Was it so the terror would be abated? Was this intended for the Blacks-only theaters? Whatever the reasons, it's too short to be boring but not great. If you see it and can figure it out, let me know.
