One of the more annoying cartoons you could possibly see!
In the late 1920s and early 30s, many previously silent cartoons were resurrected and released with sound now added due to the prevalence of talking pictures. In some cases, it simply consisted of a musical soundtrack but in a few others, sound effects were added. Among the worst of these hybrid silent/sound pictures is "Hitting the Trail"...a cartoon so cheap and badly made and remade that you just have to see it to believe it.
When you watch the copy I found on YouTube, it has a copyright of 1931. The film was originally released in 1927 and 1931 was the year sound was added to the cartoon short. In this case, not only was music added but the most godawful 'pseudo speech'. Instead of having the characters talk, which was a problem since their mouths did NOT move, a long series of nonsense sounds were made to semi-approximate speech. It's high pitched, annoying and just hard to get past.
As for the cartoon itself there's really no plot...just a bunch of stereotypically black characters running about in a jerky fashion due to poor quality animation and low cel counts.
Overall, a terrible cartoon that is less interesting than staring at your foot for 10 minutes.
