A Brilliant Satire of the Broken Health Care System
ianlueck22 January 2024
Back when I first saw this short on What a Cartoon! Show in 1996, I didn't get that it was a biting commentary on health care, I just found it an entertaining Rocko's Modern Life-style cartoon. While the short was made in Italy, its themes could easily apply to our health care system in America: The unnecessary tests, the poor bedside manner, the disregard for what the patient's telling the doctor, the maze that is the modern hospital, the reluctance on the part of the patient to receive further medical care even if something's wrong with them (usually because of how costly it is); all of that is wrapped in a very entertaining cartoon. The short is mostly told in pantomime and physical comedy; the only word uttered is "Help!" The presentation is top notch: It's fully animated and has an appropriately frenetic score that weaves in various classical pieces. Very memorable character designs as well, especially Jof with his fluffy tail that always seems to get in the way.

The only aspects it doesn't really touch are the high costs of health care (at least in the U. S.) and the agonizing amount of waiting. Jof manages to be seen by a doctor almost immediately. That's really realistic.

It's easily found online; go watch it if you haven't.

Warning: Spoilers
i remember sitting in front of the TV back in the late 90s watching Cartoon Network. A show on Cartoon Network (Now CN) was call the "What-a-Cartoon! Show". The "What-a-Cartoon! Show" (Which I will now call WaCS for short) was a show that showcased the talents of young and old, experienced and amateur animators of all kinds. Some of the shows that were presented were the Yucky Ducky shorts, early Powerpuff Girls and Seth McFarlane's Larry & Steve. Now while I was watching this one day the short "Help?" came on. Back then I did not know who Bruno Bozzeto was, but I did know tat this was one of the funniest cartoons I've ever seen. This is how it went (POSSIBLE SPOILERS!):

A large blue cat hurt his finger, so he goes to the hospital. But something keeps happening that holds him back from getting some help. All while every couple of minutes a weak little voice yelps "Help?".

Seriously a brilliant cartoon which seriously deserves a DVD release along with many of Mr. Bozzetto's other shorts. Hopefully others will remember this show as I do, and maybe I can see it again.

Extremely accurate in this day of "Managed Healthcare."

Warning: Spoilers
This humorous clip probably means more to health care workers than any other group of people. After a blue cat injures his finger, the doctor & health care staff do everything except tend to his real need. The humor is in the methods that the cat uses to try to escape and their ensuing chase to keep their patient. In the end, and after a successful escape, he injures another finger... only to think twice about going to the hospital.. and not going at all! I did manage to tape this clip onto VHS years ago and the quality is less than great, but I laugh every time I watch it. I truly wish it would be released on DVD. It's a timeless keeper! The author could truthfully make money with this by licensing it to hospitals for an ice-breaker short before a medical necessity meeting.
