Despite its title, “I Miss U” is actually a Thai horror film, albeit one with a decidedly romantic and wistful bent, director Monthon Arayangkoon, combining the love story of his 2010 “Big Boy” with the spooky shenanigans of his earlier shockers “The House” and “The Victim”. The urban legend inspired film is headlined by a trio of ghost veterans, actor Jesdaporn Pholdee (“The Eye 2”), Apinya Sakuljaroensuk (“4 Bia”) and Natthaweeranuch Thongmee (“Shutter”), and proved highly popular at the box office, emerging as the country’s top grossing genre hit of 2012 to date. The film follows a fairly familiar sounding plot, with Apinya Sakuljaroensuk as Bee, a trainee doctor who starts working at a new hospital and soon catches the eye of the handsome and much sought after Dr Thana (Jesdaporn Pholdee). Unfortunately, despite his attraction to her, the poor man is a tormented soul, still apparently heart-broken after the death of...

We first covered news on Nonzee Nimibutr's (‘Tears of the Black Tiger,’ ‘The Eye 2’) latest movie psychological horror thriller Distortion last month, and even though the films already opened in its home country we thought this newly discovered English subtitled trailer for the film would round things off nicely. With such a well known name a Nimibutr’s attached as director, and the fact they’ve gone to the trouble to create one at all, usually means they will be angling for some overseas sales, so we’ll expect to see it turning up in and English speaking territory soon. You can scan through a detailed synopsis of the plot here, or head straight down for madness and murder.

We’ve been tracking what’s been happening with Nonzee Nimibutr's (‘Tears of the Black Tiger,’ ‘The Eye 2’) latest movie - the Thai horror thriller - Distortion for well over 6 months now and it’s finally starting to pay off, with sight of some promo art for the film, plus some newly released stills. Add too that a very long summary of the plotline and things are starting to get interesting. Distortion is being funded by Sahamongkol Film who aren’t know for repping horror flicks that pull their punches. Some Thai movie sites Distortion is set for release their in May, which sound a little early to us considering there’s not even been a trailer for it yet - But as soon as there is we’ll be on it. Synopsis: A grisly murder on a hot day in Bangkok sets in motion a psychological horror...

Director: The Pang Brothers. Review: Adam Wing. Few filmmakers thrill and frustrate the way The Pang Brothers do. Early collaborations – Bangkok Dangerous and The Eye in particular – were smash hits the world over. Their solo outings have been something of a mixed bag, with Oxide fairing slightly better than Danny. ‘Abnormal Beauty,’ ‘Diary’ and ‘The Detective’ are certainly worth a look, but recent offerings have definitely been more miss than hit. ‘Storm Warriors’ – a sequel to smash hit movie ‘The Storm Riders’ – was a huge disappointment, and over the last few years we have had to endure Hollywood misfire ‘The Messengers,’ as well as 3D infused (should that read infuriating?) features ‘The Childs Eye’ and ‘Sleepwalker.’ Re-cycle was released in 2006, sandwiched between ‘The Eye 2’ and their Hollywood debut; it’s also arguably their greatest achievement. Angelica Lee (married to Oxide and starring in the second of three collaborations with the siblings) is Ting-yin,...

Rainie Yang and her pooch feel the terror in The Child's Eye.
The Child’s Eye, the fourth installment of the Hong Kong horror-thriller franchise The Eye that was launched by The Pang Brothers (Bangkok Dangerous) nearly a decade ago, is coming to DVD from Lionsgate on Oct. 11 for the list price of $26.98.
Just as they directed The Eye (2002), The Eye 2 (2004) and the bafflingly titled third film in the trilogy The Eye 10 (2005), The Pang Brothers (Oxide and Danny) are back behind the camera as the directors of 2010’s The Child’s Eye, which focuses on a group of friends who find themselves stranded in Thailand after unexpected airport closures. Unfortunately, they have no choice but to stay at the Chung Tai Hotel, an old, rundown and way-creepy building. As the group uncovers the history behind the hotel’s walls, they’re slowly drawn into its horrific past. And the more sinister,...

“The Child’s Eye” is the latest entry in the Pang Brothers’ “Eye” horror series, one that began in fine fashion with 2002’s highly effective “The Eye” (starring Angelica Lee), before repeating itself with “The Eye 2” two years later (with Qi Shu this time seeing ghosts), and the curiously named “The Eye 10” three years after that. “The Child’s Eye” boasts the Pangs working in the 3D format, and indeed, much of the film’s selling points seem to be those “look out, it’s coming right at you!” 3D elements. As to the film itself? Well let’s just say this: “The Child’s Eye” should have been sold as a comedy, because I laughed more times than I cringed in fear. Unfortunately, I think everyone involved in the film were going for scares. 2002’s “The Eye” was so good that it spawned a Hollywood remake starring Jessica Alba,...

Tony Leung (Hero, Hard Boiled, Chungking Express, Fighting for love) is Richard Ma, an extremely wealthy businessman who is unpleasantly tight fisted and stingy. After his ex-girlfriend cancels his credit cards and sells off the contents of his house, Richard is left temporarily penniless for a weekend. A chance meeting with a beautiful stock broker named Ah Choi, played by Shu Qi (The Eye 2, The Transporter) sets off a chain of events that will hopefully see the Richard change his selfish ways.

This Asian triptych sees the collaboration of three prominent directors from three different countries maximising the appeal of Tartan's Asia Extreme label. Director's Kim Jee-Woon (South Korea), Nonzee Nimibutr (Thailand), and Peter Ho-Sun Chan (Hong Kong) each provide a segment in this trio of spooky stories.
Memories, the primary instalment, comes from Kim Jee-Woon (A Tale of Two Sisters) and in it we see a husband fret over his wife’s disappearance. The man (Jung Bo-Seog) sits in lonely silence in his apartment having visions of his wife, which he’s informed is all part of his 'separation disorder'. Concurrently, a woman gains consciousness on a road, apparently having had an accident, and struggles to make her way home. The lack of dialogue and comfortably languid takes in this film makes for a fittingly sombre air to this gently chilling ghost story. Kim Hye-Soo puts a good performance of big-eyed...

- Fantasia is approaching its end, so is my capacity of watching many films in a day. This piece contains a few capsule reviews, as usual, as well as a few suggestions for the few remaining days. Creep (Christopher Smith, USA, 2004) Christopher Smith’s first film is definitely creepy. A nightmare for some, a thrill ride for others. This film is literally like watching a 2-hour long version of your worst nightmare and is definitely not a film made for all. Indeed, the rating pattern of this film is quite interesting on the BBC website. The 6000 votes are at the two extremes: about 50% of the votes cast were 1/5 and almost 50% were 5/5, very few votes are in between. It’s another of those hate it or like it film—and for me it worked, very much so. I dug it although it’s probably not the type of films I’d
