(Spoiler warning: Don’t read this if you don’t want to know anything about “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.)
If you’ve seen a Quentin Tarantino movie, you know he has an encyclopedic knowledge of cinema from Golden Age to grindhouse. He always sprinkles little tributes to the movies that inspired him throughout his stories, and in “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” you can see a trailer for one of the classic grindhouse films of that era.
Midway through the film, Sharon Tate, played by Margot Robbie, decides on a whim to see herself on the big screen in the Bruin Theatre in Westwood. Playing at the cinema is “The Wrecking Crew,” the comedy she starred in alongside Dean Martin. In it, she plays Freya Carlson, the seemingly klutzy partner of Dean Martin’s secret agent character Matt Helm. As we see in a flashback in “Once Upon a Time…...

Chicago – “The Man with the Iron Fists” is the most tedious picture in many a moon. How, you may ask, can wall-to-wall action possibly by tedious? Two reasons: 1.) The action is nonstop, and 2.) The characters are impossible to care about. The single take of Uma Thurman’s devastated outburst upon awakening from her coma is the emotional hook that keeps the audience engaged as she wreaks her path of vengeance through both volumes of “Kill Bill.”
RZA’s unfortunate directorial debut lacks that crucial moment designed to spur an audience’s emotional involvement. Instead, it hurls the viewer headfirst through an assortment of blood-spattered plot threads so needlessly complicated and breathlessly detailed that they are rendered quickly incoherent. The plot doesn’t matter anyway, since it serves solely as a clothesline for gratuitous action sequences recycled from older, vastly superior kung fu blockbusters—the kind that RZA and his pal...

Gerard Depardieu and Jean Reno are on the lam in Shut Up!
Jean Reno (Margaret) and Gerard Depardieu (Potiche) star in the 2003 French caper movie Shut Up!.
In the comedy, Quentin (Depardieu) is an amiable idiot who drives everyone crazy with his mindless, incessant chatter. After a botched hold-up, he’s thrown in a prison cell with Ruby (Reno), a hard-boiled thief who refuses to speak at all.
After the unlikely pair escape from jail together, Ruby is unable to shake the cumbersome but oddly helpful Quentin. But Quentin might be just the kind of person that Ruby needs when he finds himself pursued by his former gang and the police, both hoping to lay their hands on the 20 million Euros he has secretly stashed away.

The biggest story of the last week, by a mile, was the debut of the first trailer for Quentin Tarantino's sure-to-be-controversial Western "Django Unchained." Starring Jamie Foxx as the title character, a slave out to rescue his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), with bounty hunter Christoph Waltz as his mentor and companion Dr. King Schultz, and Leonardo DiCaprio as Calvin Candie, one of the villains, it was already one of the most anticipated films of the year beforehand, but the excellent teaser has certainly raised expectations even further.
With the trailer now having been out there for a few days, we thought it was a good time to dig into a little, and highlight some of the less obvious moments in the clip -- hints and glimpses of some of the characters who'll play key roles in the script, as well as one example of the kind of Easter Egg...

After starring in McG's sappy rom-com This Means War last month, it appears that Tom Hardy is looking to get back to something a little more manly. Details are still relatively scarce, but according to Variety, Hardy has signed on to star in an outlaw biker film that takes place in the '60s. The currently untitled script is being written by Mark L. Smith, who also wrote both Vacancy and Joe Dante's The Hole (which, sadly at this point, seems like it may never be released). The movie is being set up by veteran producer Art Linson and his brother John; the latter served as executive producer on the FX series Sons of Anarchy for some 47 episodes. The plot synopsis is as follows: "Story... centers on a wounded Vietnam veteran who returns home to San Francisco at the height of unrest of 1969. Amid clashing cultures of the Haight-Ashbury district,...

You loved him in Skyline. You were astounded when he faced off (in mid-air!) against Dinoshark on a jet-ski. And who can forget him as Comanche in Hell Ride, and as the dude whose face becomes the new mask for Leatherface in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake? Now, Eric Balfour is stepping behind the camera for his feature-film directorial debut: Jesus Hates Zombies, for which a teaser poster has also emerged.

Audiophiles & musophobes beware, Danger Mouse is moving into the short film space.
The relationship between music videos and short films has been a mixture of artistic seduction and corporate commercialism since the 80s, with many of today’s top helmers having famously kicked things off in the music video medium – David Fincher (Madonna, Nine Inch Nails, The Rolling Stones), Spike Jonze (Sonic Youth, Beastie Boys, Daft Punk), Michel Gondry (The White Stripes, Paul McCartney, Björk) to name three of the best.
For innovations in the field, The Los Angeles Film Festival (June 16-26) does a great job of blending the formats with guest musical artists curating part of their line-up, and special attention to programming internationally-sourced music videos alongside more traditional fare.
Following the Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse collaboration with David Lynch on last year’s photography & music project “Dark Night of the Soul,” comes news of Danger Mouse’s latest effort,...

On September 3, ’70s exploitation fans are going to get another homage to that era with a film called Machete (which could just as easily be called Grindhouse 2). Honestly, I’m growing tired of films like Hell Ride, Ticked Off Trannies With Knives (Tribeca Review Here), and others that have enjoyed success after the not-so-successful Rodriguez/Tarantino collaboration, Grindhouse, ushered in a new era of tongue-in-cheek exploitation flicks.

Dennis Hopper’s long film career began with the 1955 teen angst classic Rebel Without a Cause with James Dean, and he helped usher in Hollywood’s New Wave as director and star of the counterculture anthem Easy Rider in 1969. He later became a respected character actor, specializing in such off-beat villains as the drug-addicted, obscenity-spouting Frank Black in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986), crazed bomber Howard Payne in the 1994 action-thriller Speed with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, and Deacon in Kevin Costner’s soggy post-apocalyptic saga Waterworld (1995).
Hopper was born in Dodge City, Kansas on May 17, 1936. He moved to San Diego, California with his family in the late 1940s, and began studying at the local Old Globe Theater while attending high school. He soon signed with Warner Brothers and was featured in a small role in 1955’s Rebel Without a Cause. He was later featured as Jordan Benedict III, the...

Dennis Hopper, the hard-living Hollywood star with acclaimed roles in films including Apocalypse Now and Easy Rider, died yesterday of prostate cancer. He passed away at his home in Venice, California, at the age of 74.
He was surrounded by his family and friends and died peacefully at around 9am local time. Hopper had been taken ill last September with serious flu-like symptoms. Doctors quickly discovered he had cancer which then spread to other parts of his body.
Hopper's career was one of the most long-lived in an industry which is notorious for chewing up its stars. It began in the era of the 1950s with a role opposite James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, flowered in art films of the 1960s and 1970s, and then transitioned into the modern era of the blockbuster,...

I’m sure many of you out there have seen films with similar titles to “Bitch Slap”. Well, this isn’t that kind of film, at least not completely – it’s still a bit naughty tee hee hee, but it’s a little less explicit than the films you’re thinking of, you pervert. “Bitch Slap” follows the misadventures of three busty, ballsy and brash bitches as they bully, bang and betray themselves and others whilst bragging, blaspheming and buggering (not the last one, but I ran out of words beginning with ‘b’). It aims to be a part of this recent resurgence of retro rubbish – the likes of which include “Sin City”, “Grindhouse” and “Hell Ride” – but it only succeeds on a few levels. One of which is the visuals, as it looks great from the start. The washed out colours and dirty detail don’t necessarily ape the...

Chicago – In developing Top Ten film lists every year, the “critic” tends to move on and simply forget what they said in previous annual evaluations. Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com looks back, with less fear than expected.
The following list is a little different from the typical film decade analysis. There will be a showcase of all number one films in each of the decade’s years, according to McDonald, and then a reassessment as to if that film still belong in that top spot. If it doesn’t, another film from that year will replace it. Hindsight rules!
So rev up the flux capacitor and pilot the DeLorean back, as Patrick McDonald studies the effects of the number one films of the last ten years.

From its synth-heavy opening song and freeze-frame-filled beginning credits, Ti West’s The House of the Devil is a loving, respectful ode to the horror films of the 1970s and '80s. But don’t expect to get a warm, fuzzy feeling from all that affection; The House of the Devil is a gory, eerie film that doesn’t follow the templates set up by recent remakes of period favorites such as Halloween, Friday the 13th, and My Bloody Valentine. Instead of repackaging a familiar tale for contemporary audiences, director Ti West’s film revisits the era in a surprisingly fresh and authentic way.

As twilight descends on Quentin Tarantino’s contribution to nineties American cinema, fewer filmmakers are writing scripts with a copy of Pulp Fiction’s in hand for reference. A new filmmaker might reason that Tarantino is so successfully parodying himself these days that they’d be making a copy of a copy and it’s hardly worth it. But for those still in thrall to the magpie’s ouveur and determined to make knock off versions of the movies that electrified 90’s audiences, there’s still one man in Hollywood who’s willing to back them – er, Quentin Tarantino.
Hell Ride is such a movie – a low rent affair produced by Tarantino and the Weinsteins and featuring Dennis Hopper, the late David Carradine and Michael Madsen in parts so slight that you can imagine their participation was gained for a modest outlay of girls, grams and glug, probably at a...

Continuing with out DVD-themed day here at FilmShaft, it’s my pleasure to present to you….Hell Ride, a feature length, rough, tough (and not at all sexist) adventure that packs one hell of a punch and makes no apologies!

Action packed and fueled by pure testosterone, Hell Ride revs it up to DVD and Blu-ray on 12th October 2009 from Warner Home Video.
Larry Bishop takes up the role of Pistolero, head honcho of the Victors, a badass biker gang who are out to avenge the murder of one of their members at the hands of the 666ers, a rival gang who relish living up to their hellish moniker. Alongside his cohorts, the...

Back in October, Dimension Films revealed that it was planning to greenlight eighteen direct-to-video films, including remakes, sequels and prequel to "Pulse," "Feast," "Hell Ride" and "Children of the Corn." Now, Bob Weinstein from The Weinstein Company has revealed that the "Children of the Corn" remake will soon be heading to theaters and that Ehren Kruger (The Skeleton Key, The Ring) has already been hired to adapt the Stephen King short story. "We felt the 1984 film was a missed opportunity," said Weinstein. "If you read the short story, it's got such a strong feeling to it and there's this religious overtone to it as well. Ehren wants to hit it hard. It's popular in Hollywood to say you re-envisioning a project but a lot of the time they're just carbon copying the original. We are bringing something new to the story." King's "Children of the Corn" tells the story of...

After the rebirth of badass biker films with ‘Hell Ride’, FX announced ‘Sons of Anarchy’ which is a show based on…you guessed it, badass bikers!
We got a couple copies of season 1 on DVD and we want you guys to experience this show. Although it is on FX it still spares very little. Check out this synopsis:

The Charming charter is based out of a clubhouse adjacent to the Teller-Morrow auto mechanic shop. Led by Clay Morrow, the club protects and controls Charming through close community relationships, bribery and violent intimidation. Hudgens isn’t the only Eclipse/Leah Clearwater hopeful in the basket, though. Another contender, according to popular belief, is Julia Jones.

Julia Jones and BooBoo Stewart are the latest casting additions to The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and will be playing the roles of brother and sister team Leah and Seth Clearwater.
The 28-year-old Jones was last seen in four 2008 episodes of ER, after starring in the movies Hell Ride and The Reckoning. Stewart is a 15-year-old Californian, with a varied acting resume that includes the TV shows Dante's Cove and Everybody Hates Chris. Both actors look like they could easily be part of the Quileute Indian Tribe, and should fit in nicely with Taylor Lautner and Co.
Jodelle Ferland has also been officially announced for the role of vampire Bree, after much fan speculation about which part she would play. What do you think of the new castings? nothing is official until it is confirmed by Summit Entertainment. With that caveat in mind, one can proceed to look at some of the most recent reports regarding casting for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Firstly, a couple of days ago, a blogsite reported that Julia Jones beat out Q'orianka Kilcher for the part of Leah Clearwater in Eclipse. You might've seen Jones in Hell Ride and ER. Kilcher, on the other hand, was seen in films like The New World. Secondly, a new Variety report states that Jodelle Ferland has been cast for a role in Eclipse also - that of "a vampire who has just been turned." Ferland played in Tideland and Silent Hill, and she also appeared alongside Kristen Stewart in The Messengers. The part she is reported to be cast for is yet unknown, but it sounds like it could be any host of newborn vam...

Gathered here in one convenient place are my recent reviews that awarded films Zero Stars, One-half Star, One Star, and One-and-a-half Stars. These are, generally speaking to be avoided. Sometimes I hear from readers who confess they are in the mood to watch a really bad movie on some form of video. If you are sincere, be sure to know what you're getting: A really bad movie.
Be aware, movies that fall into the category of "so bad they're good" should generally get Two Stars. And when Pauline Kael wrote, "The movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash, we shouldn't go at all"--well, great trash should ideally get 2.5 stars or even higher.
Many of these reviews were written in the carefree spirit of those in my books Your Movie Sucks and I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie. Cheap shots and snark are permitted.

Legendary actor David Carradine was found dead in Bangkok earlier today from an apparent "accidental" suicide, according to the Daily Mail. He was 72. Carradine, who's best known for his iconic role as Kwai Chang Cane in the TV show Kung Fu, comes from a family full of actors – including his father John Carradine, and brothers Keith, Bruce and Robert. With more than 200 appearances in films and TV shows over the years, Carradine was always known as an actor with an edge; a somewhat creepy dude who could stare down the best of them. More recently you might remember him from his role as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, opposite Uma Thurman, or as The Deuce in Hell Ride, the voice of Frankenstein in Death Race or the strangely-named Poon Dong in...
