With its cinematic universe well established, Marvel looked to television to expand its screen presence. First came Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on the ABC broadcast network in 2013. Later that year, we heard about their ambitious plan for four interconnected series on Netflix that would culminate in a team-up series, The Defenders. It was easy enough to assume that Marvel was following its pattern of introducing superheroes in individual film installments, leading to its grand teamup, The Avengers. First out of the gate on Netflix, Daredevil successfully launched, thanks in no small part to the casting of Charlie Cox as the titular character. He spoke quietly, almost in a hush. The series featured a superb adversary in Vincent D'Onofrio and strong supporting performances by Rosario...

It really isn’t that weird that someone spent $105 million on a “Power Rangers” movie in 2017. What’s weird is that someone spent $105 million on a “Power Rangers” movie in 2017, and then decided that it should open with a gag about a teenage boy inadvertently masturbating a bull.
Yes, we live in an an infantilizing age of blockbuster cinema that sustains itself by selling people overpriced echoes of the songs they sang as kids. We've actually had quite a few trailers released recently, but it was the new/first looks at 3 of next year's biggest comic book flicks that caused the biggest commotions here on Cbm. First out of the gate was 20th Century Fox and James Mangold's Logan, which delivered a brilliant, but melancholy teaser set to the strains of Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt." Then, James Gunn provided fans with a welcome return glimpse into the lives of Star Lord and his band of intergalactic A-holes with an awesome new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. And finally, we had the very first teaser (well, we actually got 2, but we're sticking with the domestic one) for Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming, which featured our first look at Michael Keaton's Vulture in action, and, of course, those much-discussed web-wings. A few nitpicks aside, the majority of you guys...

It’s almost Christmas so, fittingly, family holiday films trim our multiplexes and fill our stockings. First out of the gate this year is the creatively titled dramedy Almost Christmas, a well-intentioned but at times lackluster foray into five days in the life of a particularly effusive family.
Danny Glover’s Wayne Meyers is the patriarch at the center of the story, and he is surrounded by four children and some of their spouses, and the array of rivalries, dreams, and regrets that they bring to the dinner table. The family losses the mother figure at the open, and she casts a pall across them—in ways good and sad—throughout the movie and the Holiday season.
There is tenderness in the premise, which carries through symbolically as the family has misplaced the absent mother’s cooking recipes and is figuratively and literally lost without them. Along the journey, which...

Anna Kendrick’s screen summer has a matrimonial air about it. First out of the gate is Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, an R-rated affair that’s pitched in the same league as Neighbors, and now we’ve got a look at 2017’s Table 19. Its title isn’t the most inspiring thing about it – it kinda sounds like a drippy rom-com – yet the trailer sets out to prove that this flick’s got a lot going for it.
First of all, Table 19 reunites Kendrick with director Jeffrey Blitz. He hired the actor for her first major breakout role in Rocket Science, so that’s one positive indicator that we’re not headed into stale wedding comedy mode. But wait: there’s more! The script hails from the Duplass brothers and the supporting cast is top notch. And the story itself?

This is the fourth of a series of interviews that focus on Local 829's Scenic Artists’ "behind the scenes" talent who sculpt and paint in a variety of ways the sets we see on television, in movies and documentaries, on theater stages, and in the backgrounds of television and internet commercials.
I first met Bradley Rubenstein very early on in my days in the scenic arts, and it was immediately apparent that he was, and still is, respectfully dedicated to his work as a fine artist. I’ve followed his career closely since then, watching his art delving deeper and deeper into the human condition as he distorts and mutates his subjects. Recently, Rubenstein had one of his warped and mangled human forms in an exhibition titled Head that I curated for the Hampden Gallery at Umass Amherst.

Recalling that classic episode of TV’s “Seinfeld”, most folks would frown on “double-dipping” (that’s the accusation hurled at George Costanza when observed dunking the same chip into salsa a second time). But in this occasion the “dd” would be considered a “pretty, pretty” good thing. That’s because in 2015 film goers will (as of Thanksgiving Eve) get to double dip into Pixar Studios’ tasty movie diversions. It doesn’t quite make up for the lack of a feature film last year, but the company’s releases are nearly always a welcome treat at the multiplex. Just this past June we were dazzled by the adventures of the emotions of a preteen girl named Riley in the wondrous Inside Out (look for it to get a whole lotta’ Oscar love). This new film is a bit more Earth bound (rather than “brain bound”?). Well, it’s really set way,...

While 2015 brings two original films from Pixar, the next four out of five films from the animation studio will revisit some of their biggest franchises, including Toy Story, The Incredibles, and Cars. First out of the gate is Finding Dory, which brings back Nemo director Andrew Stanton after his jump into live-action with John Carter, and today we have the first trailer. Fittingly debuted by Ellen DeGeneres, who returns as Dory, the story finds her on a journey attempting to learn about her past and family, assisted by Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Nemo (Hayden Rolence).
“It’s a few months after the end of the first movie,” Stanton said earlier this year. “Suddenly, because of a little accident, has a sudden memory of what her parents look like, sound like, and she suddenly has to scratch that itch to go find them. She convinces Marlin and Nemo to help her...

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues, it also expands. What began as a geeky experiment with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk in 2008 has turned into the most lucrative film franchises of all-time. That’s a feat that wasn’t accomplished simply by making popular movies – it was done by making a lot of popular movies, and making them often.
In 2013, Marvel Studios began releasing two films a year, and soon that number will increase to three. 2017 sees the arrival of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man and Thor: Ragnarok, while 2018 will be occupied by Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1, Black Panther and Captain Marvel. The logistics behind running such an expansive franchise are daunting. Luckily, we fans don’t have to worry about the minutia of scheduling three superhero movies a year – but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to remain in the loop at each and every turn.

Given the mind blowing success of Jurassic World, it’s no surprise that studios are going to be a lot more open to prehistoric themed projects for the foreseeable future. First out the gate is Meg, a script by Dean Georgaris (Lara Croft: the Cradle of Life), based on the novel of the same name by Steve Allen that follows two men who band together to take down a giant, prehistoric shark, or Megalodon to give it’s proper name, threatening the California coast. So, basically Jaws with a much bigger shark, or, maybe an even better comparison, a big screen version of many a monster movie you’d find on Sy Fy. This project has been in development for some time, with Disney going to pull the trigger on it way back in 1997, before Deep Blue Sea’s failure to ignite the box office saw it mothballed. Now, Warner Bros....

Deadline reports that Lone Survivor director Peter Berg has formed a new production arm with State Of Play producer Matt Goldberg titled Film 45. The company aims to produce non-scripted and branded entertainment for release across a multitude of platforms. Included in this announcement are details of the outfit’s upcoming slate, which is set to include a reunion for the helmer with his Battleship star Rihanna.
First out of the gate will be a theatrical music documentary that’s described as an “unfiltered look into Rihanna’s life and how she’s ascended to become a global icon.” To gain a better sense of its ambition, it has apparently been dubbed a “contemporary take” on the Bob Dylan 1975 rock documentary masterpiece Don’t Look Back. Wednesday night’s Survivor: San Juan del Sur was a nail-biter to see if Missy would be able to continue in the game with a possibly broken ankle. From hardships including minimal shelter, living off rice, bugs and fish, dealing with the elements and local wildlife, and performing extreme physical challenges, to say it’s a challenge to keep everyone safe in the show’s harsh tropical environment is a major understatement. But Jeff reveals a surprising factoid -- although medical evacuations are dramatic and hard to forget, only 11 contestants have been medically evacuated during the show’s 29 season...

They say that a hero is only as good as his villain, and this year on The Flash, Barry Allen will truly be put to the test when he faces off with several members of his diverse rogues gallery. Many of the Rogues have already been announced to appear on the show, from Captain Cold to Heat Wave, as well as Captain Boomerang, Girder, the Pied Piper and even Gorilla Grodd.
First out the gate, however, is Mark Mardon, the supervillain known as Weather Wizard. As his name would suggest, Weather Wizard can control the weather and gave the Flash quite the challenge in the series opener. A formidable opponent and a fun foe to watch on screen, Weather Wizard was the first one to show Barry Allen that he wasn’t the only one given powerful abilities after the S.T.A.R. Labs particle accelerator explosion.

So, Edgar Wright has left Ant-Man. The official statement went as follows (which you probably saw yesterday, Tom even shed a tear) ”Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on Ant-man due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.” And of course the internet exploded (as did Tom’s eyes) with inside scoops, Cornettos and pictures of cats. First out of the traps was the wonderful Joss Whedon with nothing but a tweet with the below picture. Of course Cornettos are quite symbolic when it comes to Edgar Wright. Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End are affectionately known as the Cornetto trilogy. So when The Avengers director fired off this tweet, geeks sploshed...

Here’s how this thing is going to go — even if you don’t know anything about Big Hero 6, you’re still going to see it. It’s a Marvel film (well, a Walt Disney Studios film about a Marvel Comics superhero team), and you love Marvel films. You love superheroes. You love superhero teams. But you might also be in the mood for something a little different. How does animation sound? Different, right? What about T.J. Miller voicing an unlikely hero? You love T.J. Miller! He’s on Silicon Valley, which you also love. What else do you love? How about unlikely heroes and robots and mayhem? See! You love that stuff, too! You know what? You’re going to love Big Hero 6. So maybe it’s time to take a little look at what the Don Hall and Chris Williams film has in store for you (besides love). Check out the first trailer...

Latin was the theme of Monday night's Dancing with the Stars, and even guest judge Ricky Martin brought the heat.
Amy Purdy and Derek Hough were declared safe right away and kicked off the night with a 36-out-of-40-point rumba to a slowed-down rendition of "Light My Fire" by the Doors.
"You lit my fire! ... First out, first class," head judge Len Goodman told the pair, while Martin gushed, "You were stunning. You made me feel a lot of things."
But the night wasn't entirely a win for Purdy, who was sent to the hospital shortly after her performance with a shoulder injury.

The debate about critics and film-making missing a point: Hollywood needs policing on its weaknesses, not its strengths
The first debate in 2014 about the future of film criticism is under way, this time touching down on both sides of the Atlantic, so that must make it official.
First out of the gate were the Brits. In the digital age what is left for a critic to supply? asked Malcolm Thorndike Nicholson in an article in UKs Prospect magazine, which mourned that storied time when people really did take movies and movie reviews seriously and castigated critics for clinging to a moth-eaten blueprint for their reviews, in which they trudge through their plot synopses and acting appraisals. Take out a few details and one may as well be reading a theatre or book review. Where, he asked, were those willing to celebrate film as film lighting, camera movement, framing, editing, sound,...

It started with Elmo. A little over a year ago, web entrepreneur Ilya Pozin was working on his computer with his two-year-old daughter perched in his lap. To keep her entertained, he was searching for online Sesame Street videos. He’d put one on, but after each one ended, his daughter would yell out, “More Elmo, Daddy!” — and Pozin would have to go on the hunt for another video. “I’m sitting there thinking, ‘Why am I having to DJ for her every three minutes?’” Pozin says, laughing. “I should be able to just throw on a channel for my...
