Horror legend Tobe Hooper passed away on August 26, and many artists who were influenced by his style have paid tribute to the visionary director. With a legacy that goes far deeper than his two biggest and most brilliant films — “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” and “Poltergeist” — IndieWire’s editors and critics took time to analyze his finest works, hoping to lead genre fans to some under-seen gems they might have missed.
“Eggshells” (1969)
Tobe Hooper’s psychedelic 1969 debut was lost for years, but recently found new life as a cult film with restoration screenings. The movie is a far cry from the intense horror elements with which Hooper’s most closely associated, but lays the groundwork for the subversive cultural commentary and disjointed storytelling effects found in more brutal terms with “Texas Chain Saw Massacre.” “Eggshells” is a freewheeling hippie chronicle about a bunch of free love kids, including a mute...

We all know how excellent tennis champ Serena Williams‘ skills are on the court, but you may be surprised to know that she brings just as impressive moves to the dance floor. The newly engaged athlete is the ambassador of the Australian intimates brand Berlei, and she just put the label’s new sports bra through the ultimate stress test — showing its crazy level of support while moving to Billy Idol’s “Dancing With Myself.”

Recap: Wicked City Pilot (ABC, airdate Tue. 10/27/15) It’s August, 1982, and we see Kent Grainger cruising down the Sunset Strip – that wicked, wonderful world of excess and debauchery – to the tune of Billy Idol’s “Dancing With Myself.” He spends some time at The Whisky a Go Go (the club that gave so many bands their big break). In the ladies’ room of that same club, a pretty young cokehead (Emily) brags about a real estate bigshot she just met, alongside Karen McClaren, a beautiful, young, non-coked-out lady who just doesn’t quite fit in with all of these … Continue reading →

This has truly been a summer of sonic shocks, my creeps, and the arcane audio keeps on a-comin’. Take fer instance the groovy ghoulies that are sittin’ here right now: Ghosts in the Graveyard! I caught these crazy creatures as they tried to film some sort of music video atop my crypt. A quick love tap from my Terror Tazer™ later, and these musical monsters are my new house band! Since they’re going to be permanent “guests” around here, why not find out what makes these beastly bards tick?
Famous Monsters. What’s the low-down on Ghosts in the Graveyard, and how did you come up with yer sinister sound?

Glee wrapped its six-season run Friday night with a two-hour finale that evoked the best of the show's early days.
Twelve songs – ranging from the saccharine to the sublime – figured into the night's two episodes, "2009" and "Dreams Come True." Some provided character insight, some tugged at the heartstrings, and some were pure expressions of joy.
While the show was creatively as good as its been in a long time during its closing installment, some songs succeeded more than others. Below, our take on how each tune fared.

The French New Wave, that cinematic movement from the 1960s that essentially defined iconoclasm for film, has undoubtedly had its impact on nearly everything, from film to music to style. And given its indelible impact on cultural history, it’s one of the easiest artistic movements to pull from, as demonstrated from three key music videos inspired by, ripped off from, and celebrating the auteurs from Godard to Truffaut.
“Dancing with Myself” – Nouvelle Vague
There’s a bit of irony and wordplay going on here. First, the band’s name is Nouvelle Vague, nodding to both the French New Wave and the New Wave in music during the 1980s. Then there’s the name of the album that the French cover band chose to use: Bande à Part, from the Jean-Luc Godard film of the same name. Then there’s the actual music video. Rather than go about “creating” a music video for their single,...

We just can’t get enough of the vivacity, inventiveness and … bounce … of The Skivvies (Nick Cearley and Lauren Molina), especially when they bring in Special Guest Stars. They recently invited Queer As Folk‘s Randy Harrison to join them, and in this first clip, they sing a mashup of “Music and the Mirror, Dancing on My Own, I Wanna Dance with Somebody” and the Billy Idol classic “Dancing With Myself.”
The second clip features “Kiss Me” and “I Kissed A Girl.”
Randy sounds great, but what the hell is that skirt thing? It’s supposed to be Skivvies, Randy! Why are you shy all of a sudden?

Unlike the lengthy Blind Auditions and Battle Rounds, the Knockout Rounds were short and sweet. The Voice finished up its newest tweak to Season 3 by cutting Christina's and Blake's teams in half on Tuesday night.
Watching Monday's episode immediately before Tuesday's made one thing very clear: Team Cee Lo is absolutely the front runner going into the live shows. Between Mackenzie Bourg, Trevin Hunte and Nicholas David, he probably has my three favorites in the entire competition.
For now, let's take a look and who moved on and who got kicked to the curb on Tuesday's edition of The Voice...

Devyn Deloera ("I Have Nothing") vs. Laura Vivas ("I Need to Know")
Devyn's Whitney was a bit too spot on, and not nearly as good, as the original. Laura, meanwhile, was exciting from the jump. Maybe her voice wasn't on Devyn's level, but she won me over with the performance.

Viewers were hoping for the unexpected this season and they got it early on. The last remaining coach to round out their team was very happy indeed while finding her last team member. The blind auditions came to an end Monday night on The Voice as each coach - Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green - finalized his and her team, landing 12 contestants each. First, though, came the shock of turning around and seeing Cameron Novack (aka Novacaine), who didn't make it on to anyone's team. He sang, (kind of) rapped and even beat-boxed a bit to Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know." "I did not expect you to look that way," Levine said. "How are you not a woman?" Fortunately, most of the other singers had better luck.

Round 5 of "The Voice's" blind auditions was all about filling the teams for the judges. And while that did mean a much-appreciated decrease in sob stories and excessive praise for supportive parents (We love you, too, Mom and Dad), it also meant that the contestants were not quite as entertaining as those that we've seen in the past four rounds of blind auditions. Also, unlike Season 1, "The Voice" said no to second chances and no hopefuls were allowed to audition again.
Nonetheless, we are definitely ready to move onto the battle rounds, if for no other reason than to allow the judges to have a change of clothes for the first time in more than a month.
Chelsey: "Final round of blindness begins! A.K.A. The longest day Ever for the judges apparently."
Jaimie: "Finally! I am so over Christina's plasticy chest, draped in chains."
Chelsey: "Definitely ready to move on.

The pressure is mounting during the waning days of "The X Factor." And just as the singers up their game, the behind the scenes stories get more interesting too.

The Boo Birds are back: Rachel Crow fans have not yet forgiven Nicole Scherzinger for her voting gaffe that sent the 13-year-old home. How do we know? During the introduction of the judges, Scherzinger heard it from the crowd, loudly.

The only person who seemed unaware of this was Cowell, who looked around and couldn't figure out where the singing came from. After a moment it all made sense. Cowell hated it anyway.

One of the mainstays of the Muppet world is their love of music and over the years they have put their Muppet “spin” on a number of popular songs. The soundtrack for the newest film (The Muppets) continues this trend with Camilla and the Chicken’s version of CeeLo’s “Forget You” and the Muppet Barbershop Quartet taking on Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The Muppets never just cover these songs; they incorporate their crazy antics and sometimes even change up the lyrics making the song their own. Although the Muppets have their own band (shout out to Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem) it never stops the rest of the crew from getting in on the musical action. As featured on The Muppet Show, Kermit proves sometimes the best way to allude someone is to channel the Beach Boys and break into a rendition of “Surfin’ USA”: And continues the Beach Boy love with...

At sixty nine, Blowfly can still make you blush. Given the sexual connotation of the number, the notoriously foul-mouthed almost-septuagenarian should be right at home. That prolific Dp Jonathan Furmanski was moved to make this documentary on the man is no surprise, given just how magnetic the cantankerous old man is. Born Clarence Reid, Blowfly saw a “safe” career as a song writer, most notably collaborating with Kc & the Sunshine Band – while in the meantime developing the sexually explicating shock act that still manages to turn heads. Blowfly’s bread and butter were and continue to be his twisted covers, lacing beloved hits with newly dirty lyrics. For the benefit of the reader, I’ll avoid posting any especially explicit titles – I’m sure you can figure out Blowfly’s alternate title for "Dancing with Myself" by Billy Idol.

Glee is back! Well, on Tuesday, September 20th, that is.
We already know some of what we can look forward to on the show's third season: the incorporation of the four winners of The Glee Project into the series, as well as Idina Menzel's highly anticipated return as Rachel's biological mother, Shelby Corcoran, playing a new teacher at McKinley for as many as twelve episodes.
But the third season's biggest change may well be behind the scenes. For the first time ever, the show now has a full-time writing staff, including respected Buffy alum Marti Noxon. Previously, all the episodes had been written by the show's creators, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan (Murphy and Falchuk also direct most of the episodes).
Even the most die-hard Glee fan will probably agree that the expanded writing staff is a good thing. For all its delights, the show has sometimes...

Math time: Typically, MP3 songs sell for $.99 each, which means in order for the $3.99 sale to be worth it for the buyer, there has to be at least four songs on the album worth having. Since this is a greatest hits compilation, there's much more than four goodies on here, but here's the stuff you know and love: "Dancing With Myself," "White Wedding," "Rebel Yell," "Eyes Without A Face." The 80s punk rock singer’s autobiography is under offer in France, Germany and Finland, having sold already to Simon & Schuster in the Us and UK in a high six-figure deal. Dancing With Myself – the title comes from his early hit single -- is being repped by Cathryn Summerhayes at William Morris Endeavor in London. The 54-year-old singer is promising a story of sex and drugs and 24-hour madness and says he’s “going out on a limb here – so watch my back”. Simon & Schuster’s imprint Touchstone will publish in the Us late 2011 or 2012. Let’s hope Idol sits down and finishes writing it. Mick Jagger returned his $4 million advance because he got so bored penning his memoirs. And the autobiography of George Lazenby, the man who had the unenviable task of inheriting James Bond’s shoes after Sean Connery, has been taken off the table by Century. John...

Billy Idol is set to add author to his resume - the rocker is writing his autobiography. The 54 year old is putting pen to paper to write Dancing With Myself, named after his hit 1980 single with his band Generation X, and he's promised to tell all about his experiences with sex and drugs.
He says, "Life gave me a golden key when I fell in love with rock 'n' roll music. It was the key to the answer of how to live and achieve your dreams. This world opened up to me with all the good opportunities but also every temptation - the drugs, the booze, the women, the 24-hour around-the-clock excess."
"And yet you have to write good songs to survive. Life had to be lived to do all that! Now I'm putting it all down in book form - from the heart. I'm going out on a limb here,...

Eventually, they all give in. And damn it, you might be next, Bryan Adams.
After initially declining Glee permission to cover their songs, Coldplay is giving the Fox hit access to their catalog, according to reports. You might be happy… or sad. That’s kind of a dumb statement, but I’m leaving it because it reminds me of something Brittany would say. I’m happy, but my joy comes with one question: Is Coldplay the right fit for Glee? My gut says it could definitely work, but (and that’s a big but) it has to be done correctly:...

From the best Rachel solos to the most ridiculous story lines, we're honoring the show's breakout moments and stars.

New Directions may not have won regionals on the season finale of "Glee," but the misfits of McKinley High certainly gave their rivals a run for their money. And since they didn't actually take the trophy, we've come up with our own way of honoring the hard-working Gleeks: Some yearbook-style superlatives that we feel perfectly sum up the first season.
Best Music
We've known Rachel could sing from the first note of "Les Miz," but with so many numbers to choose from, it's hard to decide which was her best. Mercedes also got a lot of solo time, but her greatest moment wasn't the show-stopping "Dreamgirls" number you'd expect. Puck, Artie and Kurt had fewer moments in the spotlight, but they all had memorable star turns.

Hollywoodnews.com: The “Glee” stage show which recently concluded a four-city tour with a weekend at Radio City Music Hall in New York City has been hitting a high note with critics.
Many of the show’s cast are present on stage, i.e. Lea Michelle and Cory Monteith, belting out covers seen over the last season. For example, Kevin McHale, who plays the handicapped Arty sings “Dancing With Myself” as well as the harmonious Journey track from the pilot, “Don’t Stop Believen.”
Richard Zoglin from Time, who is non-Gleek, exclaims:
In fact, Glee may actually play better onstage than it does on TV. For one thing, there’s none of the haphazard editing that too often wreaks havoc with the musical numbers on the home screen. For another, the super-amplified sound system muddies the voices just enough that almost everyone sounds at least passable, and in some cases (like Michele’s) pretty terrific.

The forecast for the "Glee: Live" tour is sunny ... for taking Los Angeles by storm.
The cast of "Glee" took to the stage at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City on Thursday, May 20 for the first of four performances in La and was greeted warmly (and loudly) by fans. We scored a ticket to that sold-out first performance.
Any self-respecting Gleek would probably know most of the 20-odd song set list by heart already, but seeing it live is well worth the money and effort. Not only is there an elevated, infectious energy you don't get from just watching the show at home, but the feeling of togetherness can't be matched.
Oh, and the singing. One can truly hear the quality of the live vocals, which in the case of Lea Michele is the real deal. She sounds even better than on the show, and for all the haters who...

This Wednesday, December 9th, "Glee" will finish the first half of its inaugural season, not returning to our TVs until next April. To toast the freshman series before its extended hiatus, we're counting down the characters' high and low notes. On tap today? Artie Abrams...
High Note: "Wheels" ...the episode as a whole
If "Glee" picked a different character to focus each episode on (like "Lost" used to do), "Wheels" would be the Artie Abrams hour. A-squared took center stage, with his disability and different challenges highlighted, while his strengths and talents were amplified as well. And along the way, we watched the love story between him and Tina grow. And it was adorable, how they looked at each other, how they bonded over their similarities. After just a few short scenes, we were invested in their relationship... well, a few short scenes and a musical performance too (see...

Schuester comes into the rehearsal room with two items on his proverbial “list”. One: their new song is going to be something more appealing to the judges, something they know. Apparently that’s Broadway’s Wicked. Two: the school won’t pay for the special bus to take Artie and his wheelchair with them to sectionals. The group agrees that is unfair. Schue says that when he was in glee club they would put on a bake sale to raise money for important things that they needed, like silk cummerbunds.
Finn lets Schue know that kids are busier than when he went there, what with the “homework, football , teen pregnancy… lunch.” All the kids say it would be unfair and Artie says he understands; anything that takes away from rehearsing doesn’t really serve the team. Will crosses his arms and is disappointed. He apologizes to Artie but he again...

This season of Gossip Girl may have been a touch disappointing so far, but never fear, fellow fans! Monday's episode promises at least a smidge of excitement when pop superstar Lady Gaga performs! The CW has released a super-short preview of the performance, which you can watch here: Love that she's doing "Bad Romance"—which couldn't be more perfect as a nod to all the twisted relationships on the show. Love that crunky, wild hair. And love the ginormousness of her dress, which literally required the Gaga to be lifted into the sky before it'd fall without being bunched at the ground.

As the glee club bake sale cooked up tension in the Finn-Quinn-Puck triangle, young love blossomed between Artie and Tina. But when Tina admitted to Artie she’d been faking her stutter after they shared their first kiss, Artie rejected her, disappointed they no longer have something important in common. Meanwhile Rachel and Kurt gear-up for a "Diva Off" to determine who will sing the solo in "Defying Gravity" from the musical Wicked. And boy can Kurt hit those high-notes! Read the real-life story behind Kurt's diva moment. But Glee’s choreographers were the stars of Wednesday's episode. Artie’s rendition of Billy Idol's “Dancing With Myself” -- his first solo number -- really blew us away. If you've been waiting for a chance to hear his pipes fully featured, you were not disappointed. And when the entire glee club performed "Proud Mary" while seated in wheelchairs, they proved...

Yes, I know I posted the "Defying Gravity" video from last night's Glee earlier today. But here's another good one -- "Dancing With Myself" sung by Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale).
I must admit, it's hard to get the Billy Idol version out of my head, but the tune was perfect for the wheelchair-bound Artie as he wheels through the school corridors (quite well, I might add) and looks longingly at Tina (who has a secret of her own).
Here's the video straight from our sister site, SlashControl. Which song is your favorite from last night's Glee -- "Defying Gravity," "Dancing With Myself," or "Proud Mary"? (Tell me in the comments if I've missed any!)
Be sure to read Allison's review of the episode, and if you haven't checked out Joel's post on why Artie isn't played by a real-life disabled actor, be sure to throw in your two cents there.

Glee is back! Oh how I missed you, Glee. And it was worth the wait. In my opinion, last night's episode was one of its best yet. It was well plotted, we got backstory on more of the characters, and Kurt really got to shine. Plus, the term "diva-off" was born. 'Nuff said.
I'll continue our drinking game, but I'm afraid we'll only get a little tipsy with this Gleecap. Is it my imagination or is the writing starting to get a little tighter, the stories less scattered? I think it was a smart move to focus on fewer subplots per episode.
So we start off with a Cheerios rehearsal. Quinn is in the stands watching and Finn goes to talk to her. She demands he start to help pay the medical bills. He's been looking for a job but can't find one. I know how he feels. In fact,...

"Glee" returned to Fox last night (Nov. 12) after a two-week hiatus, and with it a new crop of songs. Fans of the show who bought the soundtrack last week may be wondering where "Dancing with Myself" came from. They finally got their answer from this ep "Wheels," which focused in on wheelchair-bound Artie -- and a sweet sing-off between Kurt and Rachel. Wheelchair fights, wheelchair dances and wheelchair kissing abounds, as well as continued drama between Quinn, Finn and the real-baby-daddy Puck. We learned a little about Sue and why her cold dead heart softened for Becky, a Cheerio auditioner...

While most of the country got to watch the Yankees take home the World Series over the past two weeks, fans of the hit Fox show Glee had to sit and wait while their show was on hiatus. That wait ends tonight with the brand new episode, “Wheels.”
In tonight’s episode, the glee club is still on the road to the sectionals, and tonight the story is more about Artie (Kevin McHale). The rest of the group realizes how difficult it can be for Artie to have to keep up from the confines of a wheelchair, so Will (Matthew Morrison) decides to show everyone just how hard it can be.
Tonight’s episode features the songs “Dancing With Myself” by Billy Idol, “Defying Gravity” from the Broadway show Wicked and Ike and Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary.” Check out the clips after the jump, and be sure to catch “Wheels” tonight,...

Chicago – We have written here several times about the genius of “Glee” (in May and again in September), but with the show having been off the air for a few weeks so the Yankees could win another World Series, we thought it was a good time to assess how the show has been progressing by taking an advanced look at tonight’s episode, the wonderful “Wheels”.
Television Rating: 5.0/5.0
Since the stellar debut, “Glee” has mostly been a series of highs but there have been signs of (no pun intended given the name of tonight’s episode) a show that could be accused of spinning its wheels. Some episodes have been a little lighter than others and some of the characters have threatened to become a bit repetitive. “Glee” is at its best when the character-driven humor is unexpected and unpredictable and there were recurring jokes in October “Glee” episodes that...

Glee (TV) fans now have something else to be gleeful about: not only is the show going great and already picked up for a full season, but Glee: The Music, Volume 1 is out now, and in 17 songs spread across a full hour it captures everything that's fun and offbeat and daring about the hit Fox ensemble show that follows the highs, lows, loves, and trials and tribulations of a high school glee club (and those affected by it, including faculty members, the cheerleading squad, and the football team). On the show, the pop hits and show tunes are usually employed to express a particular character's feelings -- or those of the group collectively -- at a given moment, but the numbers also, for the most part, hold up on their own, separate from the series. Fans know that the songs are as ecclectic as the characters. Other than a...

Happy November everybody! Shake off that Halloween hangover because we’ve got some awesome new albums due out this month.
But first, as you may have heard, Adam Lambert debuted his new single, "For Your Entertainment," on Ryan Seacrest's radio show this past Friday. If you haven’t heard it yet, check it out on his official site here.
Now I may be a little biased since I voted for him a gabazillion times when he was on American Idol, but I absolutely love this song. I mean it’s actually good, right? Maybe now we can forget about the “Time for Miracles” debacle and actually look forward to the album again.
