Why have all the users who have rated this, only rated one movie.. THIS ONE?
chirag-sangoi22 August 2009
Irrespective of how the movie is, I am amazed that all the comments given to this movie up to now are by users who seem to have rated only this movie?

I ran across all of their profiles, and all of them seem to like this movie so much that they got up and registered on IMDb and gave this movie a good rating!

Smells fishy!

If the movie crew itself gets up to rate itself with high numbers, they should make themselves credible first. Watch other movies and rate at least a few of them on IMDb before rushing in creating new accounts for rating your own movie. N00bs!

one of the worst movies ever
kerem-ozdural29 August 2014
I don't usually write reviews here either, like most of the other people said so, but as opposed to them, I think it is my duty to warn other people that this is one of the worst movies I've ever watched.

One thing I can accept is that the acting was good if not great, but that's all can be said about this movie. There was not a particular plot in the story. Almost 40 minutes of watching, I still had to ask myself "So what is this movie about? What story does it tell?"

Well, it doesn't have a particular story at all. It just drifts from one event to another, probably claiming that it is trying to depict a family, but no.

Also, there're almost no actions in the movie. People talk about things happened to them all the time, but do we ever see these things happening? No. We just see people talk, talk and talk without seeing anything actually happening. And if that much of talking is not enough, a VO narrator interrupts now and then to tell us what more have happened, or what people feel/think about particular situations - which we don't actually see happening.

If there're people who love this kind of story telling, I strongly suggest them to watch plays where they will see what a real drama should look like while people keep talking.

Solid

Warning: Spoilers
The acting in the film is wildly variable. Marmo, and old warhorses like Torres and Costanzo do quite well in their parts. The scenes of Sebi handling his mother's death, and holding her, then nothing, in that bed, from an overhead shot, is quite emotionally revealing, and shows Marmo and Cistone at their best, and one just wishes that all of the emotions and direction of the film had been as stellar. There are some good supporting performances, starting with the few brief scenes of Cavalieri's Joey, whose warmth, charisma, and good looks make him a presence on screen. How this actor has not made it in a bigger way is beyond me. The same could be said for Fioravanti's Donna, who goes from a smartass bitch to a grieving friend and woman of some insight. And it's not because the role is written that way, but the looks and glances that Fioravanti imbues her character with. The third unexpectedly good performance comes from Pupello's emotionally desperate Grace, who appears in only two brief scenes, but nails an archetype while also putting real pity into her character. The rest of the cast is quite mediocre, to be generous- with the worst offenders being Madio's stale Jimmy Boy, and Jackson as Maddy's father, giving absolutely no life to his curmudgeon. The film score, by Michael Sherwood and Carl Saunders, is top notch, and not too schmaltzy nor too obvious in giving away emotional cues, and well scored by Marmo's wife, Wendy. The cinematography, by Florian Stadler and Daniel Stilling is good throughout, with a few moments of high quality, starting right from the fire at Papo's, which plays under the credits, and economically propels the characters' diaspora westward. The film also suffers from, especially in its first half, too much narration. Sebi is not Woody Allenesque in his powers of observation, and more annoying Daniel Stern from The Wonder Years, and cutting this by 30-40% would have helped, but the overall screenplay, by Marmo, ranges from solid to good.

West Of Brooklyn is not a film that will change one's life. It lacks the artistry to be great, and too much of it follows the banal paths of yore. But, at its best, the film subverts many expectations, and showcases Marmo as a genuinely multitalented artist: actor, producer, screenwriter….but NOT poet! It is the sort of work that I, on a personal level, like stumbling upon, as I have with a number of self published books I've reviewed. It is also a film that aptly shows the seeds for later potential, and on that basis, as well the others mentioned, it's worth viewing.

Lovely Funny Film
GingerJohn27 February 2008
I just saw this film last week in Los Angeles. The director and some of the actors were on hand. I just want to say that it is a lovely movie that has warmth, humor, and tears. I laughed at parts of the movie and cried at other times. I would love to see the movie on the big screen. It is one of those small independent films I think viewers would just gravitate to. The cast is territic and you can see the chemistry they all share. Anyone why has a chance really needs to see it. It is highly recommended. How about the Sundance film festival guys. Get your picture out their. Fans would love it. I hope to see this on the bg screen someday.

Feel Good Movie of the year for me
mimiishere10 March 2008
I actually never post reviews here but I thought what the heck for a change. So I registered and here I am.

OK I just saw this movie a couple of weeks back and originally went to see it because I know Ronnie Marmo's stuff and wanted to see his new film. He is a great great great talent I must say. Well this movie was not at all disappointing. It had everything I love in a movie. Humor, sadness, and fun. The cast was wonderful and it seemed to me while watching this movie that they all must be friends in real life. They were just that believable on screen.

The actress who played Matty I never heard of, Natalia Livingston, but she was wonderful and beautiful and sweet. . And Ronnie. Well I hesitate to comment because he was terrific but this was not a surprise. His story and movie. This fella is a super talent. I hope this movie can gain a fan base and some momentum cannot imagine anyone seeing this movie and not loving it. It is just one of those films everyone would love if they had a chance to see it. Great job to everyone involved and people need to spread the word and get this movie more exposure. Wonderful job people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loved this Film. It was excellent
sandiegochick5 March 2008
I went to the premiere and the movie was awesome. Ronnie is terrific and he produced and wrote a great film. Natalia , who happens to be a favorite of mine and is the reason I attended, was great. Natalia played "Matty" effortlessly. I have to say the rest of the cast was also wonderful, Ronnie in particular. This guy is a great talent and why Hollywood has not picked up on this I cannot imagine. I have to say I laughed at this movie and cried real tears believe it or not. I absolutely fell in love with each and every character in the film. We had a chance to speak with Ronnie Marmo(I am sure he does not remember us)- The writer and producer. He seemed excited about the film and really happy with it. Ronnie if we did not tell you, GREAT GREAT GREAT job. You are a tremendous talent and a real person, not plastic and fake like many in Hollywood. I hope this is the start to great things for you.

Natalia was not there the night we went, but I understand she was at some other screenings. Natty if you are reading this, we love you and great job.

stevoonbroadway5 March 2008
I saw a screening of this film a couple of years ago in Jersey. The film was not 100% complete at that time but what I saw I have to say I really thought was great. Ronnie Marmo rocks and I am happy to see this guy who is humble get some attention for a change. This movie has it all, laughs, tears, and all that feel good stuff. You might think this was a chick flick but no way. Guys and gals would love this film equally. Great story, wonderful performances, top notch dialogue. I really believed that these people were all friends and family in real life the chemistry was just that good.

Ronnie best on this film. Glad to see it is done and has been premiered. You are a talented guy and deserve success with all the other *hit coming out of Hollywood. I really hope this movie catches fire.

Feel Good Movie!
ambroinc5 March 2006
A few months ago, I had the opportunity to see a screening of West Of Brooklyn. The screening was done in New Jersey. Well, I just want to say that it is a great movie that has a little bit of everything. It makes you laugh and cry. I love these types of movies that have just enough of each for someone to enjoy. I hope to see this movie on the big screen someday. The performances by all the actors were great. The chemistry on screen by them is top notch. You think that these people really are family! If you get a chance to see this movie, I highly recommend it. Good job to the writer, director and actors involved! Mike

Who knew someone was not allowed to submit a review for one film
DPatts5 October 2009
I saw this film over a year ago and loved it and wanted to show my support. I find it interesting that another reviewer(did you actually see the movie) took the time to research every reviewer for this movie in particular. You have something against the filmmaker or have nothing better to do with your time than bash and criticize.

I happen to be a HUGE Ronnie Marmo fan, saw the play, and loved the movie. I hope that meets with the approval of this reviewer. I don't know what else to say except I adored the film and the actors. God forbid someone actually like Ronnie and the rest of the cast. The horror of it. Perhaps the reviewer should spend their time reviewing films they really watch versus spending time criticizing what they know nothing about.

Really Great Film
valsokal13 April 2008
A couple of fans of Natalia Livingston's and I went to see this movie when it premiered in LA at the 68 Cents Theatre in LA a couple of months back. I have been anxiously awaiting some sort of release date but nothing at this point which is a shame because a lot of people are missing out on a great movie.

As a fan of Natalia's, we all thought she was terrific. She was vulnerable, sweet, sensitive in this movie like she is in person. As for the rest of the cast, I think the lead Ronnie Marmo who also wrote this film is another undiscovered talent in Hollywood along with Natalia. He is one of the best things about this film and the story he wrote here is just so real and heartwarming. I saw the film Juno and even though the subject matter in this film and Juno were completely different, it reminded me of that movie maybe be cause there was humor and heartbreaking moments throughout the film. When Sebi's mom died I was crying.

Anyway, I have no idea how and when this is going to be released. I just hope they get this film into a film festival so that many others in the industry can see how wonderful a movie this is. It is a travesty that this movie has not been distributed yet. Audiences out there are really missing out on a lovely independent film. Little Miss Sunshine here we come.

Sweet Lovely Film
saramanson4 March 2008
I was visiting a friend in Los Angelas a couple of weeks back. She somehow was able to get tickets for the premiere of this film. I for one like independent films so I was excited about going. Needless to say I was not disappointed. This was a wonderful heartwarming, funny, and sad film. The dialogue was great and the acting even better. I have been a fan of Joe Mantegna's for years and never realized he was appearing in this film, but I have to say all of the characters and acting were top notch and the story very sweet. I can't wait for this film to be more widely distributed. I hope it catches on so that the audiences can see what I saw in this film. Congratulations to all the of players in this film for making it an enjoyable evening for me.

This film kicks *ss. Ronnie and Natalia and Joe you all rock
cassclay26 September 2008
Saw this flick in Feb at it's premiere in LA and I have to say it was unbelievably funny, sad, and just an overall kick*ss flick. I loved Ronnie. He was funny and sweet as Sebi. Natalia was also terrific and sweet as Matty. This chick has great screen presence. And Joe well what can anyone say about him. He is fabulous all the time. I am shocked that this movie has not been released yet. It has all the ingredients to be successful.

One last thing, the love scene with Ronnie and Natalia was hot. And lots of other interesting and funny characters that made this flick so entertaining. Great job to the entire cast and crew on this movie. It's a winner guys!

WoB was great
georgiefrasier21 July 2008
I had the opportunity to catch a screening of WoB and wow, Ronnie was fantastic. Hopefully it will get distributed or available to an audience soon. I think people will absolutely love the film. It has comedy, warmth, heart, friendship, great dialogue, and some great actors including the always fabulous Joe Mantegna. I thought the actress who played Matty, Natalia Livingston, was very sweet and gorgeous, although I'd never seen her in anything before, she and Sebi/Ronnie made a great team. I last saw Ronnie in his one man Lenny Bruce show and he was terrific. This movie just continues to showcase how talented he is. Loved the film and good luck to all involved.

A movie made with care and love deserves a re-release
strategytraining26 December 2014
What a marvelous discovery! I saw this film tonight on an obscure TV station in Croatia, where I now live. When you throw in a bunch of Italians trying to make a movie about life and love in a close-knit Italian family you really have to hit the high notes not to make it predictable--batta bam, botta bing! But Marmo and crew kept you laughing and engrossed with a loving take on leaving, losing and discovering what's important and why. The pans against the movie are surely defensible, but with such poorly written, badly acted, terribly edited, overblown "blockbusters" like Interstellar and anything to do with The Hunger Games, how refreshing it is to see and listen to believable characters, a plot that makes sense and editing that keeps you fully engaged instead of shaking your head wondering what the hell was that? We're all so jaded with production values and big budgets it's good to remember that small, independent films like West of Brooklyn still make magic. Buy it, enjoy it, and pass it on~

WoB, Ronnie, Joe, Natalia and the rest of the cast were great
Streeper24 September 2008
I am not sure I can add anymore than any of the other posters here have said other than to say this is a terrific and lovely film with a wonderful cast including Joe Mantegna(Joan of Arcadia, House of Games), Ronnie Marmo(Lenny Bruce, a One Man Show), and Natalia Livingston (General Hospital). The entire ensemble was terrific and I recognized a few other actors I recall(Liz Torres, John Jackson) who were great.

I saw this movie at a premiere back in Februrary and really am not sure why it has not been distributed. No it's not an action film, but a movie with a wonderful story, great characters, and some wonderful acting. I guess today indie films are the only way to really see character based storytelling like this.

The filmmaker, Ronnie Marmo(he wrote this) did a great job. I really hope this film makes it out there in some capacity. Real movie lovers I know will adore this film.

I laughed and cried at this movie and the love scene was hot
fayewray-329 November 2008
I loved this movie just loved it. The cast is top notch. The love scene is very hot with both Ronnie Marmo and Natalia Livingston, my favorite actress, was superb. But no one can surpass Ronnie Marmo, who's movie, story, and narration throughout was extra ordinary. I saw this back in Feb and I still can't believe it's not released yet. It's funny, sad, and heartwarming. Ronnie and Natalia great job to you both and the rest of the cast was terrific also. Joe Mantegna was in this too with another fine performance. I laughed and cried through the entire movie. This film and the entire cast deserves the best and the movie should goto a film festival.

WOW...what a movie
l-roige29 August 2008
WOW...I was so impressed by this movie...I don't know where to begin. I loved the story line...I felt like I knew the cast for years. You have the people you love and the people you hate. Not because I am Italian or anything...LOL...I happen to think it's a FANTASTIC Movie...the love scene it HOT, HOT, HOT and the narration done by Ronnie is incredible. I can't say enough about this movie. I've been following Ronniew for many years...and I think this is his BEST work yet!!! The story line and the hidden messages were unbelievable. I don't want to give it away, so when it hits the BIG SCREEN you will go and see it!!!! There are a couple of things I can about it...You will cry, laugh, get angry and feel as if these people are your family. It is as intense as it is funny. I can't wait to see Ronnie at the Oscars...You DESERVE it...this is a masterpiece.
