If anyone knows reality TV, it’s Joel McHale. The actor and comedian lent his witty remarks to clips from reality shows on The Soup for more than a decade. Now McHale is hosting House of Villains, the competition series on E! which sees 10 infamous reality TV villains living together. In what can be described as Big Brother meets The Surreal Life, the contestants maneuver through numerous mental, physical, and emotional challenges while forming beneficial alliances, and strategizing to avoid banishment. After is all said and done, one will win $200,000 and the title of America’s Ultimate Villain Supervillain. Still left in the game are Johnny Bananas (The Challenge), Johnny Fairplay (Survivor), Bobby Lytes (Love & Hip Hop), Omarosa (The Apprentice), Tanisha Thomas (Bad Girls Club), Shake Chatterjee (Love is Blind), and Anfisa Arkhipchenko (90 Day Fiancé). As things heat up, we sat down with McHale to get his feedback on...

House of Villains, E!’s new series featuring reality TV baddies such as Vanderpump Rules’ Jax Taylor and The Apprentice’s Omarosa, is looking to “lean into the comedy” of the genre, according to its exec producer.
John Irwin, who runs Irwin Entertainment and has produced celebrity house shows such as Celebrity Rehab and Sober House, told Deadline, “From the beginning, our strategy was to lean into the comedy of this concept and for the show to parody itself and the genre.”
Irwin explained that the show, which pits the reality villains against each other via a series of challenges in order to win $200,000, was initially developed by the NBCUniversal-owned cable network.
John Irwin
He said that Joel McHale was their first choice. “Not only is he insanely funny, he’s also a hard-core fan of reality television and familiar with most of our cast from his days on The Soup.

Chevy Chase's time on "Community" was ... complicated. At the beginning of a show, having a big comedy name like Chase on board was part of the reason "Community" existed at all; the rest of the cast was basically seen as the guy from "The Soup" and people you may have seen in something maybe. For a while, Chase's self-centered, bigoted Pierce Hawthorne was an integral part of the show. He had the freedom to do all the classic buffoonery he made his name on and felt like a key part of the group despite being such an outlier. In season 2, when the decision was made to essentially turn Pierce into the main antagonist, Chase thrived and delivered some of the finest moments of the show.
Behind the scenes, though, things were not great. If you listen to just about any interview with anyone who worked on that show, you...

The first time Ken Jeong arrived on the set of “Community,” co-star Joel McHale jokingly asked him what he was doing there. Shouldn’t the breakout “The Hangover” actor be focusing on movies?
“Then I kind of thought like, we had been handed this secret weapon,” McHale recalled. “And then of course, six years and two cancellations later, Ken I were thick as thieves. Nobody worked harder. I was like, man, he’s got it dialed in, I better learn my lines!”
Jeong and McHale met up recently over Zoom to chat about their friendship and working relationship for Variety’s “Dream Teams,” a new series that pairs collaborators who have become known for their successful teamwork.

Joel McHale isn’t surprised that Carole Baskin, one of the key subjects in Netflix’s smash hit docuseries “Tiger King,” refused to appear in his reunion special, “The Tiger King and I.”
Baskin has heavily criticized her portrayal on “Tiger King,” which pretty substantially laid out the case for why many people believe she was involved in the death of her first husband, Don Lewis — including Lewis’ own family.
“That whole phenomenon whether she has killed her husband has also taken on a huge life of itself,” McHale told Variety on Sunday during an Instagram Live interview. “It’s not surprising they’re not very cooperative at all.”
Does McHale believe she did it? He’s not sure — but at least based on the documentary, “she probably did.”

With “The Masked Singer” Season 3 on the horizon (it will debut after Super Bowl Liv), it’s time to look at what changes we’d like to make for the new year. Regular panelists Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke are all expected to return, but we’re hoping they’ll be joined full-time by guest judge Joel McHale. Also, the fact that Fox’s wild and wacky reality TV show still isn’t airing live after two cycles continues to confound us. Below, see our Christmas wish list for “The Masked Singer” Season 3.
See‘The Masked Singer’ season 2 finale recap: Did Rottweiler, Flamingo or Fox win the golden mask? [Updating Live Blog]
1. More Joel McHale
As we mentioned above, it’s time for McHale to join the panel on a permanent basis. Thanks to his talk show “The Soup,” McHale know more about celebrities than anyone else we can think of.

So, is she going to start introducing herself as "Jade, Host of The Soup" from now on? "I lead with that," she told Jason jokingly of her new title. E! is set to revive its talk show comedy roundup series “The Soup” with Brazilian-born comedian Jade Catta-Preta. It’s set to premiere early next year as a weekly half-hour series.
The enduring franchise that began on E! as “Talk Soup” in 1991 features a comedic take on outrageous highlights from daytime talk shows, reality TV series and now viral Internet videos. The series helped turn former hosts Greg Kinnear and Joel McHale into TV stars.
“We’re excited to bring this beloved franchise back to the network, with a new take on an old favorite,” said Rod Aissa, head of production and development for Oxygen and E!. “Jade’s quick wit and keen observations will provide a much-needed voice in today’s pop culture landscape delivered in a way that only ‘The Soup’ can.”
Catta-Preta is billed as a busy comedian based out of Los Angeles who performs in English and Portuguese.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Deadwood, The Handmaid’s Tale, Black Mirror and Designated Survivor!
1 | Granted, our recollection of the 1880s is fuzzy (too much absinthe, ugh), but did the Deadwood movie bother you with how some of the lamps — especially the handheld lanterns — were so uniformly bright and didn’t flicker, at all? What, did Hearst also bring Led bulbs to the region?
2 | Was Burden of Truth‘s hacked car a great advertisement for less fancy vehicles?...

Joel McHale spoke about the recent cancellation of his Netflix talk show during a guest appearance on the “Jim Norton and Sam Roberts” show on SiriusXM.
The reason Netflix pulled the plug? “I don’t think they liked my sweaters,” McHale joked. “Obviously Netflix has trained their audience to binge watch, and we actually tried that, as well. But so far people aren’t watching Netflix that way.”
The cancellation came just months into the run of “The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale’s,” following only 19 episodes. On the talk show, the former “The Soup” host featured celebrity guests and discussed comical moments from television, internet videos and the entertainment world at large.
Now that the show is canceled, McHale, said he no longer has to watch some of the nonsense television that he normally covered such as the “Real Housewives” television series. Instead, he can spend time getting back into his Dostoyevsky books,...
