Remember that bit from the Golden Globes a few years ago, when Tina Fey and Amy Poehler joked that Julia Louis-Dreyfus was too good for her TV friend after she'd been nominated in one of the show's film categories? Well, get Allison Janney an e-cig, because she's a crossover nominee now.
Janney has been Golden Globe-nominated five times already (four times for The West Wing and once for CBS's Mom) but her Best Supporting Actress nomination for I, Tonya marks her first for a film. (I, Tonya was also nominated for Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical and Margot Robbie for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.) Et spoke with Janney shortly after the nominations were announced to discuss how she would be celebrating, staging a The Help reunion at the Globes and meeting the real Tonya Harding.

When Allison Janney watched Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan compete in the 1994 Olympics — along with 126 million others — she had no idea that she’d eventually earn her first Oscar buzz for playing Harding’s mother. Most of those viewers tuned in because weeks prior, Harding’s ex-husband and bodyguard arranged for an attacker to club Kerrigan’s knee with a police baton. But for Janney, it was personal: few know that she was once a serious figure skater herself, sidelined from the sport by a freak accident that occurred when her parents hosted a party.
“There was a game where couples had balloons tied around their ankles and you tried to pop the other couples’ balloons,” said Janney, who portrays Lavona Golden in Craig Gillespie’s “I, Tonya.” “I was cheating, and had my balloon tied around my knee, because I had a strapless long dress on. Cheaters never prosper!

I, Tonya, an unconventional biopic about the unconventional, embattled yet iconic '90s figure skater, is based on "irony free, wildly contradictory and totally true" interviews with Tonya Harding and her one-time husband, Jeff Gillooly. (We're told as much via title card at the start of the movie.)
While the conflicting details of those discussions constitute the crux of the film, many key moments in Harding's life have played out in front of the cameras, allowing for a side-by-side comparison of actual events and as restaged by Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding. Either watch these videos before seeing I, Tonya, out now, or come back afterward to truly appreciate how closely the movie nails it.

Donning an array of permed wigs and bedazzled unitards, Robbie plays Harding from her teenage years into her 20s -- then via makeup and prosthetics, she is aged up to play Harding at 44. This vintage news reel...

When Greta Gerwig’s already-lauded “Lady Bird” hits limited release later this week, the actress-writer-director will join a long line of other female filmmakers who used their directorial debut (this one is Gerwig’s solo directorial debut, just for clarity’s sake) to not only launch their careers, but make a huge mark while doing it. Gerwig’s Saoirse Ronan-starring coming-of-age tale is an instant classic, and one that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who has enjoyed Gerwig’s charming work as a screenwriter in recent years, bolstered by her ear for dialogue and her love of complicated and complex leading ladies.
While Hollywood still lags when it comes to offering up opportunities to its most talented female filmmakers, many of them have overcome the dismal stats to deliver compelling, interesting, and unique first features. In short, they’re good filmmakers who made good movies,...

Everybody wants to think that their kid is a genius and that they’re special in some way. It’s usually true that most kids are very special in their own way but the issue with being a true genius is that sometimes that intellect manages to get in the way of other skills that are just as important to an individual’s growth. The problem with this is that the smarter a child becomes the less they are seen to interact with other kids their own age. It’s not something that will happen as a rule, but it is a very serious

It took 12 whole episodes, but Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn) has finally returned to our television screens.
The Twin Peaks chat rooms, message boards and Twitter feeds have been speculating for years on end about where we would find her and how (Is she in Hollywood? Is she the mysterious billionaire in New York? Is she still in a coma? Was she horribly disfigured in the bank explosion? Is she now running One Eyed Jacks?). But I am fairly certain that no one saw this outcome, this development, this new Audrey.
At first I found it confusing and jarring: that weird guy is Audrey’s husband?...

“Just watched the Nashville Preds sweep the Chicago Blackhawks!! Fun game!! Little man was one of my many dates tonight #MamaTo4 #Smashville,” Clarkson captioned the shot.
Thankfully Remington rocked a pair of headphones to soften the noise and a little navy coat. His beaming mom wore her hair in pigtail braids as she cheered on the team.
Clarkson certainly isn’t the first star to attend a Predators game. Fellow American Idol alum, Carrie Underwood, regularly roots for the team as her husband, Mike Fisher, is their captain.

In just a couple of days the Summer blockbuster season will get a big jump-start (hey Spring’s not yet a month old) when those magnificent men (and women) in their flying “muscle-car” machines start spinning their wheels and defying gravity at the multiplex. As they rev their engines here’s a quiet little “heart-tugger’ about family and kids that stars a guy that usually helps usher in the big popcorn flicks as Marvel Studios’ patriotic powerhouse. Like many “swinging” singles from TV (“Family Affair”) and cinema (Raising Helen), he’s tackling unexpected parenthood after the tragic demise of the birth mother. And things get even more complicated, when (as in other recent films like Little Man Tate) the child is a genius, brainy, or as the title proclaims, Gifted.

Shot in a single take and broadcast live to 500 cinemas, Harrelson’s directorial debut is a unique work that fuses technical wizardry with self-deprecating satire
Even at its liveliest, cinema can only ever be a refrigerated medium, relaying images to us that were shot months, years even decades earlier. But this week there was an exception to that rule. Woody Harrelson’s directorial debut, Lost in London, was broadcast live to more than 500 cinemas in the Us, and one in the UK, as it was being filmed on the streets of the capital at 2am on Friday.
As if that were not impressive enough, the picture was shot in a single unbroken 100-minute take with a cast of 30 (plus hundreds of extras) in 14 locations, two black cabs, one police vehicle and a Vw camper van festooned with fairy lights. Actors who try their hand as a director typically start off...

It's been a couple months since we've posted anything for the FX series Taboo starring Tom Hardy. Today, we have four promo videos titled "Little Man," "Dear James," "Evil," and "The Prestige." We also have a poster we hadn't shared yet. The show has a dark undertone, it's beautifully shot, and has an incredible cast. If you've got the FX channel, this looks like a must watch.
Synopsis:
Set in 1814, Taboo follows James Keziah Delaney, a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocably changed. Believed to be long dead, he returns home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father's shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself. But his father's legacy is a poisoned chalice, and with enemies lurking in every dark corner, James must navigate increasingly complex territories to avoid his own death sentence. Jodie Foster has lined up her next directorial gig at Netflix. Ahead of “Black Mirror’s” Season 3 release, the streaming service announced that the director and actress will be helming an episode of the fourth season of the critically acclaimed anthology series.
No additional details about the episode were revealed only that Rosemarie DeWitt will star. Production for Season 4 will begin later this year and premiere sometime in 2017.
Created and written by Charlie Brooker, who serves as executive producer and showrunner alongside Annabel Jones, the sci-fi-themed series had its first two seasons on Britain’s Channel 4 and was later revived by Netflix. The show taps into our collective unease with the modern world and each stand-alone episode is a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia.

In all likelihood, the events of this past week probably didn’t offer any more or less sadness and pain to be distributed among willing and unwilling recipients, a.k.a. all of us currently participating in the game of Life. It’s a strange, unsettling time to bear status as a citizen of the world, wherever it is in that world one happens to call home. But speaking as only one of billions buffeted about by the weirdness of a human condition in which terrorism has started to feel commonplace, and in which the policies of political campaigns are used as flimsy opportunities to stir fear, prejudice and an increasingly volatile mythology of helpless American victimization at the hands of hordes of murderous invaders, the sorrow contained in this past week crested perhaps a little higher than might have even been expected.

'Money Monster' with George Clooney and Jack O'Connell: TV celebrity and unwise investor/hostage taker. 'Money Monster' review: Jodie Foster movie suffers from both qualitative and intellectual disconnect Sometimes there's a difference between what a movie thinks it is and what it actually is. Usually it's a qualitative disconnect, as in “this movie thinks it's exciting but it's actually boring” or “this movie assumes Kevin Hart is funny when, in fact, he's not.” In the case of Money Monster, the divide is also an intellectual versus anti-intellectual one. The fourth film directed by Jodie Foster fancies itself a ripped from the headlines wail from the bottom of the economic ladder. A thriller-cum-exposé into how Wall Street and big media suckered average Americans into following the Pied Pipers of TV's financial punditry class over the cliff into economic ruin. However, the movie we're really getting is...

In Cannes, the actor and director of Money Monster addressed the lack of female directors in mainstream Hollywood, saying ‘studio executives are scared’
“I’m not a spokesman for anything – I know nothing,” Jodie Foster declared in Cannes on Wednesday, in front of a room of press attending her Kering Women in Motion talk. But over the course of her hour-long conversation with Variety’s Ramin Setoodeh, she proved herself wrong, passionately advocating on behalf of fellow female directors.
The actor and film-maker is in Cannes to premiere her fourth feature as director, Money Monster, outside of competition. She previously directed 1991’s Little Man Tate, 1995’s Thanksgiving comedy Home for the Holidays and 2011’s Mel Gibson vehicle, The Beaver.

One man's loss is another man's gain. This was certainly true for Danny Willett on Sunday when an unexpected meltdown from Jordan Spieth landed Willett the coveted Masters jacket. "Golf happened," the victor told Espn after Sunday's win. "Things went our way and we got fortunate a couple of times and now we're able to sit here as a Master champion." Willett came out a surprise winner on Sunday, facing off against Spieth, a 22-year-old Texas golfer who tied Tiger Woods' record in 2015 to win the Augusta, Georgia, tournament. But just who is Willett? - besides the new owner of that fancy green blazer.

How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2015?Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2015—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2015 to create a unique double feature. All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2015 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...

Actor Tim Roth recently revealed to the Huffington Post that his new character, Oswaldo Mobray, in The Hateful Eight is the great-great-grandfather of a character from another Tarantino film, Inglourious Basterds. So let's just get all speculation out of the way: Is he Hitler's great-great-grandfather? And if so, should we kill him? Because it's like that old saying: If you're not willing to kill baby Hitler, perhaps you're willing to kill his ancestor to forever alter the course of history. Huff Post points out that Mobray's nickname in the film is "the Little Man," which is also the nickname of B.J. Novak's character in Inglourious Basterds: Smithson "the Little Man" Utivich. Ah-ha! Okay, so maybe he's not related to Hitler. There goes that new internet poll.

We’re more than halfway through August, dear readers, and the summer movie season is almost over. But there are always new trailers for me to watch and analyze. This week’s installment of Trailer Trashin’ takes a look at the teaser for Quentin Tarantino’s next film The Hateful Eight.
Premise: In post-Civil War Wyoming, eight strangers seek shelter in a haberdashery during a blizzard. But they soon get involved in a plot of betrayal and deception. Will they survive, and are they really who they say they are?
My take: Back in November 2013, Quentin Tarantino announced that his next film would be The Hateful Eight, his second Western after Django Unchained (2012). But in January 2014, after Tarantino had given copies of his first draft screenplay of the film to a few trusted colleagues, a copy of the script was leaked online. Tarantino was furious, filed a lawsuit against the gossip blog Gawker,...

"Move a little strange, you're gonna get a bullet. Not a warning, not a question, a bullet." Time to meet all eight of the untrustworthy bounty hunter vermin shacked up under one roof in a blizzard during Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight. From the "Bounty Hunter" himself, to "The Hangman" and his "Prisoner", to "The Sheriff" and "The Mexican", as well as "The Little Man", "The Cow Puncher" (my favorite name) and of course, "The Confederate". Th first teaser for The Hateful Eight just came out last week and they've been revealing each of these posters day-by-day, one for each of the "eight". Now we can get a good look at all of them together. I like these, but nothing tops that blue Comic-Con poster art for Hateful Eight. Your choice?
