Nightmares in Foam Rubber is a thirty odd minute feature focusing on the involvement of special make-up effects men Gregory Nicotero & Howard Berger in the production of the horror anthology Creepshow 2 (1987).
This is actually quite detailed, more than I expected anyway as it begins with a look at how Nicotero & Berger started out doing special make-up effects which go back to their first professional credited job on the zombie film Day of the Dead (1985) & how the producer of that was impressed enough to hire them as supervisor's on Creepshow 2 even though Ed French had already been hired to do the make-up effects.
Nicotero says how director Michael Gornick refused to speak with French during the making of The Raft sequence & he quit & went home leaving Nicotero & Berger in charge. It's unusual to hear such candid & troubled production history of a film but also refreshing, I find the documentary's that are nothing more than extended self congratulations really dull so this juicy gossip was nice to hear.
Nicotero & Berger talk about the three individual segments of Creepshow 2, from Old Chief Wood'nhead to The Raft & The Hitchhiker & discuss how the key effects shots were created & filmed as well as the various problems that the production faced including ice cold temperatures, constant rain & running out of ultra-slime.
As a further incentive there are lots of behind-the-scenes footage & a look at various stages of the effects work during filming.
Nightmares in Foam Rubber is obviously biased towards the special effects side of things but other aspects are touched upon & this is a neat little documentary that fans of the film should definitely try to watch. One of the better talking head documentary's out there with enough behind-the-scenes footage, facts & gossip to make it worthwhile.
