Fun and futuristic
SoulfulFX4 April 2006
This series takes place in the year 2356, 189 years after a supernova's shock-wave hits the earth and nearly eradicates every living thing. Stellvia is a space station, the 2nd of six "foundations" which are distributed around planets in the solar system with the goal of protecting the planets (including Earth) from a 2nd wave bearing down on them. Later in the series, the second wave also leaves a rip in the universe ('Cosmic Fracture') that the cadets of Stellvia will have to combat along with some UFOs.

The main character, Shima, is a programming genius (and complete klutz). She along with Arisa and her other friends, tough their way through the academy and life as they prepare for the missions.

This series has a marvelous intro and closing song plus a nice mix of animation with CGI that doesn't let the CGI make the series too glossy (like is problematic with series such as IGPX). It's definitely a series for any age...lighthearted and fun.

Warning: Spoilers
Centuries after Earth is devastated by an electromagnetic shockwave caused by a star going supernova, a second shockwave composed of the remnants of the star itself threatens Earth. A young girl by the name of Shima Katase goes to Stellvia, a space station like school. Where she learns how to be a pilot. There she meets many faces like her best friend, Arisa Glennorth as well as many other people who she befriends such as Yayoi Fujisawa, Akira Kayama, Joey Jones, Masaru Odawara and this mysterious boy called Kouta Otoyama.

Although I do think the melodrama was kinda too far at times especially during the whole Shima and Kouta relationship arc (which they seem to have forgotten towards the end) I thought this was a very fun anime. With good characters and excellent stories telling. With an excellent OST too.

If you are into stuff like Mecha and starships you might enjoy this series.
